IPL 2024: CSK Stamp Authority, Defeat Gujarat Titans By 63 Runs

Chennai Super Kings batters dazzled before the bowlers ran riot to choke Gujarat Titans in a comprehensive 63-run victory in their second IPL match on Tuesday. Ruturaj Gaikwad‘s team has covered all its bases and it was evident as Rachin Ravindra prepared a platform with 20-ball-46 allowing Shivam Dube to unlock his beast mode with a 23-ball-51. In between, Gaikwad himself maintained the balance with 36-ball-46 as Chennai’s 206 for 6 was a Herculean total in every sense. Titans in reply could manage only 143/8 as Chahar (2/28 in 4 overs), Mustafizur Rahman (2/30 in 4 overs), Tushar Deshpande (2/21) and Matheesha Pathirana (1/29 in 4 overs) one by one tightened the noose on Titans batting unit.

If Gujarat needed to make a match of it, Shubman Gill needed to fire but his poor shot selection of a Deepak Chahar delivery, which wasn’t as short as expected for a pull-shot, brought about his downfall.

Once Shubman was gone, Gujarat didn’t even have a chance in hell with players like Wriddhiman Saha (21 off 17 balls) and B Sai Sudharsan (37, 31 balls), players, who on most days are pillion riders, playing second fiddle to perfection.

As it was the case, finishers like David Miller (21) and Rahul Tewatia (1) didn’t have enough on the board to go for the improbable chase and the inevitable happened. Put into bat, Rachin’s slam-bang approach and Dube’s final flourish got CSK past 200-run mark.

Rachin made full use of Powerplay, racing to 46 off 20 balls while Dube, a nightmare for spinners then used his long levers to whack 51 in only 23 deliveries to increase the challenge of GT batters by manifold. Dube’s innings had as many as five sixes. In between, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad’s chiselled 46 off 36 balls also was a significant contribution in another impactful batting performance on a hard bouncy track that was on offer. Not to forget CSK’s Rs 7.60 crore recruit Sameer Rizvi (14 off 6 balls), who pummeled Rashid Khan (2/49 in 4 overs) for two sixes to mark a memorable IPL debut.

It was Rachin, who has already become a darling of the CSK fans, enthralled all and sundry with his audacious stroke-play. While he missed out again on a half-century but team’s ‘spiritual skipper’ Mahendra Singh Dhoni would be all smiles knowing that his choice was perfect to the T. The three sixes — a flick behind the square and one over long-on off the normally profligate Umesh Yadav and one off Azmatullah Omarzai were hit with so much disdain that it did put Gujarat Titans in a spot. There were some crunchy cover drives as Ravindra let his skipper Gaikwad breathe a little easy at the other end.

Finally, it was GT’s ‘Go-To’ bowler Rashid, who drew the first blood but more because of smart work from Wriddhiman Saha, who removed the bails in a flash after the Black Caps opener lost his balance moved out of his crease trying to whip the delivery.

Saha’s next stumping was way easier as Sai Kishore shortened the length and drew him out of his crease for an indiscreet loft. The ball deviated enough and the keeper completed mere formality.

Gaikwad wasn’t as fluent as Ravindra to begin with but in his five boundaries and a six, he oozed class before becoming Saha’s third victim with the gloves trying to pull Spencer Johnson, only to end up edging one behind the stumps.

After that it was Dube, who just plonked his front-foot and bludgeoned Sai Kishore for two monstrous sixes and also sent Johnson’s delivery soaring for a maximum. Dube had the composed Daryl Mitchell for company, who also chipped in with an unbeaten 20-ball-24 in a stand of 57 runs for the fourth wicket in 5.5 overs.

Won't Deposit Licenced Arms, Need For Defence: Kuki-Zo Group In Manipur Ahead Of Elections

Kuki-Zo group ITLF in a statement said licenced guns submitted last year have not been returned

Imphal/Guwahati:

A Kuki-Zo civil society organisation that is spearheading the call for a separate administration carved out of Manipur has asked members of their tribes not to give their licenced guns to police stations for safe-keeping ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, citing safety concerns amid the ethnic tensions with the valley-majority Meiteis.

District magistrates in Manipur and other states had issued orders informing the public to hand over their licenced guns to the police, to be returned after the polls, following the Election Commission’s model code, and to ensure compliance with the Representation of the People Act which bans civilians from carrying guns in and around polling booths.

The Kuki-Zo group Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) in a statement said licenced guns submitted last year have not been returned yet. “We need every available weapon to defend our ‘right to life’ and our land…” the ITLF said in the statement signed by its chairman Pagin Haokip, and secretary Muan Tombing.

“The state government’s attempt to view the current dispensation based solely on election related matter and thus issuing order for submission of weapons to arms licence holders at jurisdictional police station may not serve appropriate considering the plight and uncertainty we are facing. This will only invite more controversy and insecurity that will rightly offend the Kuki-Zo people,” the ITLF said.

Sources said the order is not state specific and not initiated by the state authorities on their own, but is a part of the code of the Election Commission that is followed before the Lok Sabha elections.

The ITLF in the statement asked members of the Kuki-Zo tribes “not to comply” with the order to hand over licenced guns to the police. The Kuki-Zo tribes have often alleged Meitei armed groups such as the Arambai Tenggol have crossed sensitive areas guarded by central forces to attack their villages.

The Meiteis have made counter-allegations, pointing at Kuki-Zo insurgents attacking civilians by taking advantage of the suspension of operations (SoO) agreement, a sort of ceasefire signed with the Centre and the state government. Both sides call their armed groups “village defence volunteers”.

The ITLF’s call to defy the order for depositing licenced guns at police stations violated the Election Commission’s (EC) strict code, police sources said, adding the EC will be made aware of the statement by the Kuki-Zo group for action.

Over 4,000 guns of all kinds were looted amid the violence in Manipur. Many police stations in and around Imphal valley were raided by mobs, and many were shot when they overran the guards. On May 3, 2023, the day violence broke out, a gun shop in Kuki-Zo-dominated Churachandpur was raided by mobs. N Ibomcha, the shop owner, later told local media it was the first looting of a weapon storage when clashes erupted.

A similarity between the “village defence volunteers” of both sides is that they appear to be well-armed and well-equipped with modern battle gear. The security forces have frequently recovered Russian-origin AK and US-origin M series assault rifles, and gun models commonly used by both the junta’s army and pro-democracy insurgents in neighbouring Myanmar.

The Manipur ethnic violence broke out over cataclysmic disagreements on sharing land, resources, political representation, and affirmative action policies between the Kuki-Zo tribes and the Meiteis. Over 200 have died in the clashes, and thousands have been internally displaced.

The Kuki-Zo tribes are a majority in the hill areas in southern Manipur and a few other districts. The Meiteis are a majority in the valley areas.

Manipur has two Lok Sabha seats – Inner Manipur, and Outer Manipur. The entire Inner Manipur constituency and some areas under Outer Manipur will vote on April 19. The remaining areas under Outer Manipur will vote on April 26. Votes will be counted on June 4.

Adani Power proposed to acquire 100% share capital and control of Lanco Amarkantak Power

New Delhi:

Fair trade regulator Competition Commission of India (CCI) cleared Adani Power’s proposed acquisition of Lanco Amarkantak Power.

Adani Power proposed to acquire 100% share capital and control of the Lanco Amarkantak Power, pursuant to the corporate insolvency resolution process (CIRP) initiated under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 (IBC), according to a release.

Insolvent Lanco Amarkantak Power is engaged in the business of thermal power generation.

On March 5, Adani Power announced it received the creditors’ approval for the resolution plan to acquire insolvent Lanco Amarkantak Power.

“The proposed transaction does not result in an appreciable adverse effect on competition in any plausible relevant market in India,” CCI said.

Adani Power is engaged in the business of thermal power generation in India.

In another release, CCI said it has cleared the proposals of purchasing stakes in PharmEasy by various entities, including Ranjan Pai’s MEMG Family Office LLP and 360 ONE Group.

API Holdings, through its subsidiaries, is in the business of providing healthcare services through the online e-commerce marketplace PharmEasy.

The proposed transactions envisage the subscription of class B compulsorily convertible preference shares of the Target (API Holdings Ltd) by the acquirers (MEMG LLP and 360 ONE Group), as per the release.

360 One is a Sebi-registered Alternative Investment Fund. It is managed by its investment manager, AML. The latter provides investment management services to schemes of 360 ONE Mutual Fund and alternative investment funds of the 360 ONE Group.

MEMG Family Office LLP (MEMG LLP) is engaged in the provision of consulting and advisory services to customers in India and ultimately belongs to the Pai Family Group.

Deals beyond a certain threshold require approval from the regulator, which keeps a tab on unfair business practices as well as promotes fair competition in the marketplace.

Editorials: Unholy bonds

The BJP’s swelling treasure chest is an indication of how skewed the electoral playing field is

The details coming out of the now-scrapped electoral bond scheme have exposed quid pro quo arrangements between politicians and corporates dependent on the largesse of the governments. It has come to light that of 26 companies that bought the electoral bonds and have faced action by investigative agencies, 16 donated to political parties through bonds only after they came under the radar of these agencies. Further, the donations of another six companies surged after these agencies started cracking down on them. In another interesting case, the Coimbatore-based top donor ‘Future Gaming’, owned by lottery king Santiago Martin, did not purchase a single electoral bond until a year after it faced an Enforcement Directorate probe on alleged money laundering charges. Besides making political funding opaque, the electoral bonds scheme has undermined democracy. This is only the tip of the iceberg as electoral bonds account for just 5% of the total political expenditure in the country. The ruling BJP has been the biggest beneficiary of this nexus. The saffron party’s swelling treasure chest is an indication of how skewed the electoral playing field is, which clearly subverts democracy and the institutions running it. Big businesses and corporates have benefited from the dubious system. In fact, major industry associations like the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India and the Confederation of Indian Industry had petitioned the Supreme Court to defer the disclosure of the electoral bond unique identification numbers that would reveal who paid whom. But the court rightly refused to entertain these petitions.

An insane amount of money is spent by candidates to buy votes. One estimate pegs the expenditure in a general election at Rs 1 lakh crore. There may be many politicians who are individually honest but the harsh reality is that without institutional corruption, honesty and survival are not compatible in India now. We are living in an imperfect world, and it would be naïve to assume that just by banning the electoral bond scheme, things would become transparent and clean. The real challenge lies in bringing reforms in the electoral system to free it from money distribution and vote-buying. Politics must be run with the help of legitimately collected funds. A suggestion that deserves consideration is providing money from the public exchequer to the political parties to meet the expenses of their day-to-day functioning but not election expenditure in proportion to the votes they poll. There is a need to create a political economy where the party in power cannot determine the economic fortunes of enterprises or individuals. These reforms are tough and cannot happen overnight. Free and fair elections are not possible without transparency of political funding. It is, therefore, necessary that we confront this issue head-on and think of alternatives that can improve the life of Indian democracy.

MS Dhoni showed his class with the gloves as he went airborne to take a diving catch and send Vijay Shankar back for 12.

Sai Sudharsan (37) got off to a positive start, but David Miller (21), Vijay Shankar (12) and Azmatullah Omarzai (11) struggled to stitch up meaningful partnerships.

Tushar Deshpande scalped two in the middle phase, while Daryl Mitchell and Matheesha Pathirana claimed a wicket each to ensure the pressure kept mounting on GT.

Delhi Man Poses As Crime Branch Officer, Arrested: Cops

The accused, identified as Ayub Khan, has been arrested, police said. (Representational)

New Delhi:

A man allegedly posing as a policeman duped people saying he can get them cars and mobile phones at very low prices at an auction at a Delhi court’s premises, officials said Tuesday.

The man would claim to be a crime branch officer and would take money at the court premises before fleeing, they said.

The accused, identified as Ayub Khan, has been arrested, they added.

According to police, they received a PCR call on January 29 regarding one Deepak Chaudhary, who introduced himself as a crime branch officer.

The complainant said while travelling in Tejas Rajdhani Express on January 2, he met Chaudhary who said that there were some cars at a Delhi court for auction, said Manoj Kumar Meena, Deputy Commissioner of Police (north).

The officer further said that the accused told the complainant that he can get a Toyota Innova Crysta for a price of Rs 5.30 lakh and advised him to come to Tis Hazari court for purchasing the car.

On January 29, the complainant reached the court, where Chaudhary asked him to pay Rs 2.50 lakh, and took his original Aadhar card and PAN card for purchasing the car, the DCP said.

Chaudhary then fled and switched off his mobile phone, he said.

In a similar incident, on March 14, a man, introducing as crime branch officer Deepak Chaudhary, duped a person of Rs 1.50 lakh by promising him two Apple iPhones from an auction at Tis Hazari Court, the officer said.

Police said that they checked the CCTV footage and identified the man. A team was formed and the accused was arrested from east Vinod Nagar.

“During enquiry, the accused, who stated his name as Deepak Chaudhary was questioned. He later revealed his original name as Ayub Khan,” the DCP said.

Delhi Police’s forged ID card, fake pants and shoes have been seized from his house, he said.

During interrogation, Khan said that he was unemployed and frequently engaged in such con jobs by posing as a crime branch inspector of Delhi Police.

“He is fond of living a lavish lifestyle and keeps visiting bars and restaurants in Delhi and Mumbai. He has no fixed source of livelihood hence, he started to cheat people by posing as a policeman,” the DCP added.
