"Can't Replace Shami With Anyone": GT Star's Admission Post Defeat To CSK

Gujarat Titans pace bowler Mohit Sharma conceded it was hard to replace a bowler of the calibre of Mohammed Shami as his team succumbed to a massive 63-run defeat at the hands of reigning IPL champions Chennai Super Kings. India’s premier pacer Shami is sitting out of the IPL as he is recuperating from an ankle surgery. He is expected to make his comeback with the home Test series against Bangladesh later this year after missing the five-Test series against England. Shami will also miss the T20 World Cup to be jointly hosted by the West Indies and the USA in June.

“Any team is bound to miss a bowler like Shami, and you can’t replace him with anyone. But injuries are uncontrollable, and you must see how to move ahead with it,” said Sharma, who played for CSK between 2013 and 2015 and has been with the Titans since 2022, during the post-match press conference.

“As for GT, it’s the first year for Spencer (Johnson) and Azmatullah (Omarzai). They haven’t played much cricket yet. Therefore, we must be patient with them and not become too result-oriented.

“We must not bother about the runs leaked or the result of the contest, but how successful we are with our plans and how we are working on it backstage. These things would come in handy in the second half (of the event),” opined Sharma.

CSK posted a huge 206 for six, with openers Ruturaj Gaikwad (36) and Rachin Ravindra (46) being the stars alongside Shivam Dube (51). GT bowlers took a lot of beating with Umesh Yadav going for 27 in two overs, while the crafty Afghanistan ace spinner Rashid Khan went for 49 in four overs although he took a couple of wickets.

Sharma added that CSK milking runs in powerplay also contributed to the big loss.

“Not much of a difference (in CSK’s strategy). It used to be the same when I used to play for CSK, and we usually tried to get the maximum out of the powerplay overs,” he said.

CSK were 69 for 1 after powerplay overs.

“We knew it was going to be a similar scenario, especially with Rachin (Ravindra’s) batting of late. However, we failed to execute our plans properly and also failed to judge the width and length during our bowling.

“We failed in executing our plans properly. We began to bowl the slower ones too early and too wide off the off stump, leading to them scoring freely. It happens that the plans always don’t get executed properly every time.

“But it’s a big tournament, and we have ample time to go back to the drawing board, rectify our mistakes and start afresh.

“We had a target of 200 as the par score on this wicket, and CSK played just the way we had thought. They were on course for 225-230 before settling for 206, but since we failed to implement our plans, we believed we gave away 15-20 runs extra.” Sharma also defended the visitors’ decision to bowl first, stating that dew is always a factor in night games, though, interestingly, there was hardly any dew on Tuesday night.

“Don’t think the pitch has a role to play. Generally, if we win the toss and decide to bowl, it’s because we know that the dew might play a factor later during the game.

“But, there was no dew (Tuesday). As usual, we decided to bowl and restrict them to a par total, while dew would have been an added positive for us.

“Had the wicket been drier, CSK would have moved in with two spinners. But, had the (GT) pacers bowled in the right areas, it would have been tough for them to hit,” he considered.

‘Won’t say we failed to score runs, but credit to CSK bowlers’

Despite the 63-run loss, Mohit refused to blame the batters for the poor show. CSK bowlers implemented their plan to perfection to restrict GT to 143/8 with Sai Sudharsan (37) being GT’s top scorer.

“I won’t say we failed to score runs, but credit to the CSK bowlers for bowling brilliantly. Deepak (Chahar) started well, and at the end of the day, it all boils down to the number of variations you possess and when and how to use them.

“Don’t think it was a pressure scenario for us. The wicket was good, and 200 was a gettable total here.

“But the wickets that we lost initially, leading to lack of partnerships, followed by CSK bowlers bowling the right length, led to our inability to up the run rate, and we began lagging in every over,” he signed off.

Israel deliberately stalling Gaza ceasefire talks: Hamas

A senior member of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas says Israel is deliberately stalling the indirect ceasefire talks, as the occupying regime’s genocidal war against the besieged Gaza Strip continues unabated.

Ghazi Hamad made the remarks in an interview with Lebanon’s al-Mayadeen news network on Tuesday, saying there is no progress in the negotiations due to Israel’s disruption, adding that Tel Aviv’s position is to insist on non-alignment.

He went on to say that it is clear that the occupying regime seeks to continue the war despite international opposition, and for this reason it is not taking the negotiations seriously and halts the process to buy time.

Hamad further stated that currently the main door of the agreement is still closed, because the Israelis reject the idea of reaching an agreement.

The high-ranking Hamas official also noted that Israel has not yet answered the question about its readiness for an agreement that will lead to a ceasefire, stressing that in fact Tel Aviv is playing a dirty and misleading game with mediators to say it is negotiating, but the reality is something else.

“Every time, it seems that the Israeli side has no decision and is negotiating without a clear position, and it is Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s policy to continue wasting time in negotiations,” he said.

Meanwhile, member of Hamas Political Bureau, Mohammed Nazzal, ruled out the possibility of achieving a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, blaming the Israeli regime for the lack of progress in the negotiations.

In an interview with Al Araby Television Network, Nazzal said “Considering the Israeli regime’s insistence on its position, it is not possible to reach a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.”

He went on to say that the Israeli regime, despite all the flexibility shown by Hamas, continues to waste time and evade any kind of commitment, stressing that the counteroffer presented by Israel in the ongoing indirect ceasefire talks is at odds with the resistance group’s demands.

“The occupation insists on not withdrawing from Gaza, not committing to a permanent ceasefire and on preventing the return of displaced people [to northern Gaza],” Nazzal said, adding that the Israeli regime has rejected the demands of the resistance group regarding the issue of Palestinian prisoners.

“For this reason, the conditions are not good and I don’t think that an agreement will be reached that would be possible to sign due to the insistence of the occupiers on their position,” he said.

The latest development comes as the UN Security Council has adopted a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Multi-party negotiations on hammering out a truce agreement between Hamas and the Israeli regime have reportedly failed to yield any results.

Israel waged the brutal war on Gaza on October 7 after Hamas carried out a historic operation against the occupying entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed more than 32,300 Palestinians and injured over 74,000 others.

About 130 of the 250 Israeli captives taken by Hamas during the October 7 operation are still in Gaza after a provisional truce deal in December saw the exchange of prisoners between the two sides.

US Bridge Collapse May Block Export Of 2.5 Million Tonnes Of Coal

US Bridge Collapse May Block Export Of 2.5 Million Tonnes Of Coal For Weeks

India’s annual coal demand totals more than 1 billion tons.

The collapse of a major Baltimore bridge Tuesday is likely to shut down the port’s coal exports for as many as six weeks and block the transport of up to 2.5 million tons of coal, said Ernie Thrasher, chief executive officer of Xcoal Energy & Resources LLC.

The US exported about 74 million tons of coal last year, with Baltimore the second-largest terminal for the commodity. Plugging up a major coal hub threatens to disrupt global energy supply chains that have finally begun to work out the kinks left over from pandemic slowdowns.

“You’ll see some diversion to other ports but the other ports are pretty busy,” said Thrasher at Xcoal, a Pennsylvania coal trading firm that works with several suppliers. “There’s a limit on how much you can divert.”

Baltimore ships less than 2% of global seaborne coal so the bridge collapse will have little effect on global prices, Thrasher said. He added that the coal that moves out of Baltimore includes a lot of India-bound thermal coal, which is used for electricity generation.

“It will cause some disruption or chaos from a supply-chain standpoint,” Thrasher said. “But the big question is the impact on India more than any global impact.”

India’s annual coal demand totals more than 1 billion tons and the nation imported roughly 238 million tons of the fuel in the most recent fiscal year, of which about 6% was shipped from the US. Baltimore accounted for around 12 million tons of the imports, according to a research note from analytics firm Energy Aspects.

The Energy Aspects note also predicted marine traffic in Baltimore would be disrupted for two or three weeks at most. Some coal shipments may be temporarily rerouted to other ports including Norfolk, Virginia, the note added.

The supply disruption will affect Asian coal markets more than European markets because much of the coal exported from the port has high sulfur content and isn’t suitable for European power stations, according to a note from commodity analytics firm DBX.

Shares of companies that mine and move US coal fell Tuesday. Consol Energy Inc. saw its shares drop 6.8% and CSX Corp. shares fell 1.9%. Consol’s Marine Terminal in the area of the bridge is used to loading coal into large ocean-going ships and the terminal is served by CSX.

CSX said in a statement Tuesday that it had capacity to send more trains to the Baltimore coal terminals it serves before reaching space limits and that CSX customers should expect shipment delays. CSX is also working to identify alternatives to moving cargo through Baltimore, the statement said.

The European coal price traded slightly higher on Tuesday, up less than 1%.

Washington: Six people, who went missing due to a bridge collapse in the US city of Baltimore, are presumed dead.

Addressing a press conference, Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath said due to the cold water temperatures and harsh sea conditions, it was likely the missing individuals were dead, Xinhua news agency reported.

The US Coast Guard has suspended search and rescue efforts.

The 2.6-km-long Francis Scott Key Bridge, a major bridge that held Interstate 695, collapsed at about 1:30 a.m. local time early Tuesday morning after being hit by a Singapore-flagged large container ship, which experienced a power failure before the collision.

The six individuals who went missing, all road maintenance workers, were reportedly on the bridge repairing potholes when the collapse occurred.

Two other people were rescued from the Patapsco River earlier, with one in critical condition, according to local authorities.

In brief remarks from the White House Tuesday, US President Joe Biden said he wants the federal government to pay for the reconstruction of the bridge. The bridge opened to traffic in 1977 and saw approximately 11.5 million vehicles crossing it each year.

“We’re gonna work with our partners in Congress to make sure the state gets the support it needs,” President Biden said.

Colombia threatens to sever ties with Israel if Gaza ceasefire not implemented

Colombian President Gustavo Petro

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has threatened to break off diplomatic ties with Israel and has called onto other nations to do so if Tel Aviv refuses to comply with a United Nations security council resolution that calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

The UN security council approved the resolution on Monday, urging for an instant halt to hostilities in Gaza during the holy month of Ramadan, which concludes in a fortnight.

On Tuesday, in a social media post Petro warned the Zionist regime to either end its genocide in Gaza or face severing of political ties with the South American country.

“If Israel does not comply with the United Nations ceasefire resolution we will break diplomatic relations with Israel,” Petro said on a social media platform.

“Colombia does not support genocides,” he said in another post.

On Monday, in another released statement he commended the approval of the resolution and called upon other countries to sever their connections with Israel if it fails to halt its military aggression in war-torn Gaza Strip.

“I invite the nations of the world to break diplomatic relations with Israel if it breaks the ceasefire,” he said.

The Israeli regime has been committing severe acts of genocide and war crimes in the name of “protecting its people”.

Petro has repeatedly accused Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government of being genocidal and has compared it to the Nazi regime.

On 29 February, Petro decided to halt the procurement of weapons from Israel following reports of the killing of 100 Palestinians in an Israeli assault. The victims were awaiting humanitarian assistance in Gaza at the time.

Colombia and Israel have faced various tensions following the outbreak of the war in October. Ambassador Margarita Manjarrez came back to Colombia on 8 November last year after being summoned for consultations by the president.

The ongoing offensive has tragically claimed the lives of more than 32,000 individuals, as reported by Gaza’s Health Ministry.

Indian student accuses hate campaign in London college elections

Satyam alleges that a meticulously planned campaign was launched against him just hours before the voting began.

Indian student accuses hate campaign in London college elections

London: Satyam Surana, the Indian student who came to the limelight for bravely retrieving the Tricolour amidst an attack on the Indian High Commission in the United Kingdom by extremists last year, is now speaking out against alleged hate and smear campaigns targeted at him during this year’s student union elections at the London School of Economics.

Satyam has claimed that, mere hours before voting commenced, a very ‘well-planned’ campaign was initiated against him. He asserts that this campaign sought to associate him with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and labelled him a ‘fascist,’ with the apparent intention of inciting a boycott against him and his electoral bid.

The Pune-born student has also practiced at the Bombay High Court for some months and is pursuing an LLM at the London School of Economics, with his course ending later this year.

Elaborating on the whole set of incidents, he said that the LSE elections were declared in February and early March and he filed the nomination for the post of general secretary.

“From March 14 to 15, we noticed that my posters were being ripped off, torn. We complained to the authorities. After we replaced our posters, on the 16th, we saw that some posters were defaced. There were crosses on my face, it was written ‘anyone but Satyam’. I was cancelled out,” Satyam told ANI.

“On the 17th afternoon, there were messages in all groups of LSE. Indian groups, law school groups. The messages claimed, ‘This Satyam Surana is a BJP supporter, he is a fascist person, an Islamophobe, a transphobe’. The messages were so seditious and contentious of the Indian government and the current establishment,” he added.

Satyam alleged that the radical elements also screenshotted his posts on social media handle X, where he had merely praised the BJP government, but his posts were used with a malicious agenda to call him a “fascist.”

He also said that his manifesto had no political points, but merely contained the genuine issues on campus. Even though he initially got overwhelming support, this hate campaign derailed his chances.

“With my entire team, I went through the entire campus. We were reaching out across departments and explaining our policies. I had a very well-written and well-drafted manifesto, which was not at all political. It said how things need improvement at LSE, how there is a need of a grievance redressal portal, having subsidised food on campus. We were getting support and people were saying that they would vote for me,” Satyam said.

“But, out of the three people, it was only me who was targeted randomly. When these messages started coming, my entire team was shocked, we were in a dilemma, and the entire moral conscience of the team was shattered,” he added.
Recalling the episode from the Indian High Commission last year, Satyam said, “Somewhere around early October, I was in the news because I picked up the national flag outside the Indian High Commission among the Khalistani protestors. I was blessed to receive media coverage. I was interviewed by national media channels.”

He further said that he was targeted for calling Khalistanis as ‘terrorists’ in one of his posts.

“See, this is my country. I will always be an advocate for my country. How is Indian politics relevant to the student union elections in the UK? My views and endorsements of my government is entirely my opinion,” Satyam added.

The Indian student said that his photograph with Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis — which was clicked when he was invited by Fadnavis during his India visit — was used by the extremist elements to claim that he is linked to the BJP.
He further pointed out that since the whole smear campaign against him was targeting the ‘right wing, Satyam believes that the campaign was planned by ‘left-wing’ groups.

“I was called a Neo-Nazi supporter, Right Wing, out of campus. See, when the message heading was circulated as the right wing out of campus, it is very clear that the campaign was dictated and planned by the left wing,” he said.

On being asked if the hate campaign against him was started by an Indian person or a foreigner, Satyam said that the first message he received was from an Indian and most of those involved in this campaign were Indians only.

He added that this was not a random or personal campaign, but a “well-planned hate and toolkit campaign” involving people who are politically motivated against the incumbent BJP government in India.

Satyam even claims that those who targeted him are part of that group that can’t digest the success of India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and hence spread such false and malicious propaganda.

“The people of the international community are not aware of what is going on in India. Every international person is looking up to India and the current Prime Minister as a stalwart, legendary politician. Our Prime Minister has the highest approval rating in the entire world, we have shown what we can do during COVID, and we are emerging as the third largest economy. But, sadly, these groups who can’t digest this fact are spreading not misinformation, but disinformation,” Satyam said.

However, Satyam was not able to go past the finish line despite gathering support in the initial phase of the campaign. He believes that the way his campaign was targeted and hampered it hurt his goodwill.

He further said that this campaign did have a huge impact on him and his life at the campus, even after the elections were over. But, he also acknowledged that he did get support from many people who stood by him in this hour.
Satyam stated that the point in the episode that hurts him the most is the fact that the majority of people who carried out the hate campaign against him were actually Indians only.

“The only thing that hurts is that these were our fellow Indian students who circulated these messages and questioned the sovereignty of India. How shameless can people be to forward these messages? I can’t believe Indian students are forwarding the messages and hampering the sovereignty and integrity of our country,” he added.

Old Video Of Attack On Trinamool Leader Falsely Shared As Recent

Fact Check: Old Video Of Attack On Trinamool Leader Falsely Shared As Recent

New Delhi:

An old video of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sujata Mondal being chased with sticks by a group of people in a field is being shared with the misleading claim that it is a recent incident of people chasing her away in Arambagh, West Bengal.

BOOM found that the viral video is from April 2021 when Mondal was chased out of a polling booth in the third phase of the assembly election in the state. Mondal had then alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was creating chaos and threatening TMC supporters in Arambagh amid the voting, which the BJP had denied.

In 2021, the TMC had made Mondal its candidate from the Arambagh Assembly seat in Hooghly district, but she lost. In 2022, she divorced her then-husband MP Saumitra Khan, who’s now the BJP candidate for the Bishnupur Lok Sabha constituency. Mondal legally separated with Saumitra and removed ‘Khan’ from her surname and contested and won the state panchayat election as Sujata Mondal on a TMC ticket to become a Bankura Zilla Parishad member in 2022. TMC has given Mondal the Bishnupur Lok Sabha ticket for the 2024 general elections against her former husband Khan who has been fielded by the BJP again.

The 1.49 minutes video was posted on X by the handle Rakesh Krishnan Simha (@ByRakeshSimha) with the caption, “Sujata Khan, TMC candidate from Bishnupur, Bengal, was threatening voters of Arambagh to vote for TMC or face the consequences. Voters of Arambagh beat up Khan and other party workers and chased them away. The Hindus of Bengal are fighting back.”

Iran into 2026 FIFA World Cup third round

Amir Ghalenoei’s men had strolled to a 5-0 victory when the two teams met at Azadi Stadium on Thursday and following Uzbekistan’s win over Hong Kong earlier in the day, they needed just a win to confirm qualification.

The deadlock was finally broken deep into added time of the first half when Hossein Kanaani sent a trademark diagonal pass for Mehdi Taremi who climbed highest to nod it into the path of Mehdi Ghaedi to rifle on the half volley past the Turkmen goalkeeper for the opener.

The result means Iran join Uzbekistan in the next round and in Saudi Arabia 2027, with both teams sitting on 10 points, while Turkmenistan remain level with Hong Kong on one point.
