President Ebrahim Raeisi of Iran is to visit Algeria over the weekend in a first trip by an Iranian president to the North African country in 14 years.

Iran’s official IRNA news agency said on Wednesday Raeisi will travel to Algiers on March 2 at the official invitation of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

The Iranian president is scheduled to attend the seventh meeting of the leaders of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Algiers.

IRNA said Raeisi’s trip to Algeria is in line with his administration’s efforts to bolster cooperation with regional and international organizations and to expand relations with Muslim and “like-minded” countries.

It said Raeisi will hold talks with Tebboune in Algiers, adding that high-ranking delegations from the two countries will also negotiate and sign several memoranda of understanding during the trip.

The last time an Iranian president visited Algeria was in September 2010, when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stopped for a few hours in Algiers as part of a regional tour to hold talks with then President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

The GECF was established in 2008 based on an initial proposal by Iran, a country which is one the world’s largest holders of natural gas reserves and a top producer and consumer of the hydrocarbon resource. The forum has 13 permanent members and seven observers.

Raeisi’s trip also comes on the backdrop of Iran’s efforts to boost relations with countries in North Africa, including Sudan, with which Iran had strained relations in recent years, and with Egypt, a country with no diplomatic relations with Iran since 1979.

Russia’s UN envoy says US giving Israel ‘license to kill’ Palestinians

Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations says an alternative draft resolution Washington has proposed on the situation in the besieged Gaza Strip simply paves the way for more Palestinian civilian deaths.

“This is not an alternative at all, but another license to kill Palestinian civilians that the US is determined to give Israel by submitting it to the UN Security Council this time. We urge the members of the Council not to support this destructive endeavor,” Vasily Nebenzia said in a speech at the Security Council on Wednesday.

“The alternative draft Security Council resolution on Gaza proposed by the US does not contain a call for a ceasefire and is aimed at extending the UN umbrella over the Israeli operation in the strip.”

Nebenzia said the United States was accountable for Israel’s campaign of death and destruction in the Palestinian territory.

“By blocking international efforts to stop the violence in Gaza, Washington bears full responsibility for the unprecedented number of civilian victims of this escalation, the number of which has already approached 30,000. This is the price of the American veto in the UN Council,” the Russian diplomat said.

He said the “only and vital imperative to prevent mass starvation in Gaza” was to halt hostilities and press Israel to comply with international humanitarian law.

“However, all attempts by the Council to adopt such a decision have been blocked by the US, which has used its veto four times. Against the backdrop of tens of thousands of dead and starving people in Gaza, the US delegation continues to cynically argue that a ceasefire is almost dangerous because it will undermine some fragile US diplomacy on the ground.”

On February 20, the US once again blocked adoption by the Security Council of a draft resolution for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. 13 of the 15 members of the Council, including Russia and China, voted in favor of the document submitted by Algeria. Britain abstained.

Nebenzia said ceasefire “is important first and foremost for the creation of safe, uninterrupted humanitarian corridors.”

“In addition to the delivery of aid through them, it is necessary to establish the evacuation of seriously ill people who, in the absence of treatment, face imminent death in Gaza.”

The Russian official also said the Security Council should take punitive measures against the countries that obstruct humanitarian access to Gaza.

“It is also important not to forget that the Security Council has the right to consider imposing sanctions against those who obstruct humanitarian access to those in need.”

WPL: Navigre’s blitzkrieg takes UP Warriorz to crushing win

Bengaluru: Kiran Navgire and Alyssa Healy unleashed a remarkable assault on Mumbai Indians bowlers to power UP Warriorz to a seven-wicket win in their Women’s Premier League match here on Wednesday.

Navigre (57, 31b, 6×4, 4×6) and Healy (33, 29 balls) added 94 runs for the opening wicket stand in just 9.1 overs as the Warriorz eased past the 162-run target in 16.4 overs to hand the defending champions their first defeat of the season. Mumbai batting suffered in the absence of skipper and in-form batter Harmanpreet Kaur, who is nursing a niggle, as a laboured 55 off 47 balls from Hayley Matthews guided them to 161 for six.

It was a competitive total but the Mumbai bowlers would not have suspected a carnage like the one Navigre and Healy unloaded on them. Navigre, who is the only Indian women batter to score a 150-plus score in senior T20s, fully exploited her promotion as opener, as Mumbai also suffered from the injury-enforced absence of lead pacer Shabnim Ismail.

Healy gave a sound start to UP’s chase with two successive boundaries off pacer Nat-Sciver Brunt, and they kept the momentum going from that point. Navigre, who made a slow start making five off six balls, slipped into her aggressive best against pacer Issy Wong, hammering her for four fours in the third over to collect 16 runs and it was just the beginning of the onslaught.

Navigre, who was dropped on 42 by Wong near the ropes off Matthews, soon completed his fifty in just 25 balls and it came through a thundering six off the West Indian spinner over long-on. But leg-spinner Amelia Kerr had player of the match Navigre stumped to give a bite of respite to Mumbai, who seemed to have gained a foothold as Wong dismissed both Healy and Tahlia McGrath in the 11th over. They needed 64 runs at this stage, but Grace Harris (38, 17 balls) and Deepti Sharma (27, 20 balls) made those runs with minimum fuss.

Earlier, Mumbai made a sedate start to their innings and had to wait till the fourth over for the first four. Yastika Bhatia (26, 22b) gave Mumbai the much-needed acceleration when the left-hander hammered 18 runs off left-arm pacer Anjali Sarvani through a sequence of three fours and a six, which was thumped right over the bowler’s head.

However, Bhatia did not last long as a pull played closer to her body off Harris ended in the hands of Rajeshwari Gayakwad. Matthews too tried to up the tempo and found the occasional big hits amid a slew of mis-time shots. Her four and six off successive balls off left-arm spinner Gayakwad were a reminder to her power and timing when in flow.

Matthews, who was dropped on 43 by Deepti off Harris, reached her fifty in 44 balls but could not kick on. Her effort to clear long-on off Gayakwad did not have elevation and distance as Harris completed an easy catch. A couple of hefty blows in the final stages by Pooja Vastrakar (18, 12b) and Wong helped MI to cross the 150-run mark.

Brief Scores: Mumbai Indians 161/6 in 20 overs (Hayley Matthews 55) lost to UP Warriorz 163/3 in 16.3 overs (Kiran Navgire 57; Issy Wong 2/30).

A retired High Court Judge was allegedly duped by two persons to the tune of Rs 2.5 crore, by persons claiming to be members of a leading social organisation and promising jobs for his grandchildren for contribution to a political party through electoral bonds

Hyderabad: A retired High Court Judge was allegedly duped by two persons to the tune of Rs 2.5 crore, by persons claiming to be members of a leading social organisation and promising jobs for his grandchildren for contribution to a political party through electoral bonds.

The 75-year-old alleged that in 2021 the suspects, Sarath Reddy and Narendra, approached him claiming to be important members of the organisation. He believed them and entrusted them with the money under the pretense of purchasing electoral bonds, believing the transaction to be legitimate.

According to the police, after handing over the money, the duo did not submit the bonds or secured employment for his grandchildren as promised. His requests for over two years went in vain.

The complainant approached the Film Nagar police alleging that the individuals had violated the recent Supreme Court judgment regarding electoral bonds and misappropriating the funds for personal gain.

Based on a complaint, the Film Nagar police booked a case of cheating and criminal breach of trust and took up investigation.

Hyderabad: Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy said on Wednesday that the Vigilance Department was ready with its report on Medigadda and that it would be submitted to the government soon.

Addressing a news conference at Jala Soudha, he said the Director-General of Vigilance had briefed him about the status of the inquiry. “Based on the Vigilance report, we will file cases against the guilty. We will go as per law, and we will take legal opinion to proceed,” he said.

Asked about the FIR filed suspecting sabotage to the Medigadda barrage, Uttam Kumar Reddy said the police were directed to continue their inquiry into the allegation. He dismissed the sabotage theory as ridiculous. He said former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao should personally visit the Kaleshwaram project to witness its present status.

“From the government’s side, we’ve instructed the officials to extend full cooperation to the BRS leaders on the mission and let them inspect Medigadda and other barrages. But whatever the government has to do, it will do,” he said.

Uttam Kumar Reddy said that the State government had assigned the total inquiry of damage to the piers of the Medigadda Barrage and leakages in the Annaram and Sundilla barrages to the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA). Based on the NDSA findings, further action, including repairs and options to utilize the project, would be explored. He stressed that a project on which Rs.94,000 crore was spent could not be abandoned entirely.

Regarding the judicial inquiry, Uttam Kumar Reddy said the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court had expressed the inability to spare a sitting judge of the investigation. Therefore, he said other options for engaging a retired judge for the inquiry were being explored.
