Sangareddy: A BHEL employee, who alleged lured jobless youngsters offering contract jobs in BHEL, was arrested. He reportedly took Rs.5.40 lakh from seven job seekers.

The employee, Satyasheel, was with BHEL in RC Puram since 2010. Following the complaint of one victim Vittal Reddy, the RC Puram police registered a case and launched an investigation and found that he had cheated seven persons.

Earlier, Satyasheel was jailed in 2015 in a cheating case. He was also arrested on the charge of stealing copper wire from the company in 2022, police said.

120 individuals, groups urge UN to probe Israeli attacks on journalists in Lebanon

More than 120 individuals and organizations have demanded a UN investigation into Israel’s assaults on reporters in southern Lebanon.

The appeal, addressed to UN rights chief Volker Turk on Wednesday, expressed concern over Israel’s “apparent deliberate targeting of journalists and media workers in Lebanon.”

The letter urged “an investigation to establish the facts and circumstances” around the attacks and for the findings to be published “with a view to holding those responsible accountable.”

Signatories included the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), local and regional rights groups, Lebanese lawmakers, and media outlets including Al Jazeera.

A separate letter sent to UNESCO chief Audrey Azoulay urged her office to “advocate for accountability for the apparent war crimes committed by Israel in south Lebanon.”

On November 21, 2023, Al-Mayadeen reporters Farah Omar and Rabih Maamari were killed in Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon.

Following the strike, the Israeli military said it was “aware of a claim regarding journalists in the area who were killed as a result of [Israeli] fire.” It said there were “active hostilities” in the area. The regime claimed the incident was under review.

Another attack on October 13 that year killed Reuters journalist Issam Abdallah and wounded six others, including two AFP journalists.

In December, Israel said the October strikes occurred in an “active combat zone.” The regime made a similar claim it was reviewing the strike.

An AFP investigation into the October strikes, jointly conducted with Airwars, an NGO that investigates attacks on civilians in conflict situations, found the attack involved a 120-mm tank shell only used by the Israeli military in this region.

A Reuters investigation found that two Israeli tank rounds fired from the same position across the border were used in the October attack.

Media organizations have repeatedly protested against Israel’s deliberate targeting of journalists, describing it as a war crime under international humanitarian law.

Journalists have also been deliberately targeted in Gaza since October 7, 2023, when Israel launched its onslaught on Gaza. At least 120 journalists have been killed in Gaza since.

In its annual report released on February 15, the CPJ said 72 of 99 journalists killed worldwide in 2023 were Palestinians reporting on Gaza.

“In December 2023, CPJ reported that more journalists were killed in the first three months of the Israel-Gaza war than have ever been killed in a single country over an entire year,” the CJP said.

The toll of journalists killed in Gaza since October 7 has even surpassed that of World War II – 69 media personnel were killed in that war, which lasted from 1939 to 1945.

Karimnagar Police’s attempt to target BRS leaders exposed by court

There are also allegations that the police, without proper investigation, immediately went for an arrest, with the court action now exposing the political motives behind the entire episode

Hyderabad: An apparent attempt by the Karimnagar police, allegedly at the behest of Congress leaders from the district, to target BRS leaders came to light on Wednesday when the court questioned the arrest of three BRS leaders, pointing out the invalid sections charged against them and ordering their release.

The embarrassing episode for the police came after the arrest of three persons, E Ashok, K Srinivas and T Balaiah in connection with a civil dispute case. The three, whose wives are BRS corporators in the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation, were later produced before the First Class Judicial Magistrate in Karimnagar. The court, which found that the case was still pending in a civil court, is learned to have first questioned how the police could register a case on the same issue when the civil court was still dealing with the case, and also pointed out that the sections under which the three were charged were not applicable.

The court, ordering the police to release the three BRS leaders, also asked the police to follow procedure and to issue notices to them under Section 41 A of the CrPC. With the police action triggering suspicions of the arrests being politically motivated, it was also pointed out to the court that the recently constituted economic offences wing in the Karimnagar police was targeting only BRS leaders.

The BRS leaders were first arraigned as accused following a complaint by one Mamidi Ravinder Reddy on different charges of demanding money to allow construction of houses in Teegalaguttapally and also of demolishing compound walls and threatening plot owners. Even as these cases were pending in court, another complaint was lodged against Ashok. However, the police is said to have arrested all three BRS leaders though two of them were not named in the complaint.

There are also allegations that the police, without proper investigation, immediately went for an arrest, with the court action now exposing the political motives behind the entire episode.

Globally, 1 accident reported for every 1.26 mn flights operated in 2023: IATA

New Delhi: There was one accident for every 1.26 million flights operated globally in 2023 and it was the lowest rate in more than a decade, according to airlines’ grouping IATA.

Releasing the data, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on Wednesday said there were no hull losses or fatal accidents involving passenger jet aircraft in 2023.

“However, there was a single fatal accident involving a turboprop aircraft, resulting in 72 fatalities. There were 37 million aircraft movements in 2023 (jet and turboprop), an increase of 17 per cent on the previous year,” it said in a release.

IATA represents around 320 airlines comprising 83 per cent of global air traffic. “The all accident rate was 0.80 per million sectors in 2023 (one accident for every 1.26 million flights), an improvement from 1.30 in 2022 and the lowest rate in over a decade.

This rate outperformed the five-year (2019-2023) rolling average of 1.19 (an average one accident for every 8,80,293 flights),” the release said.

In 2023, a single fatal accident occurred on a turboprop aircraft, resulting in 72 fatalities. “This is reduced from five fatal accidents in 2022 and an improvement on the five-year average (2019-2023) which was five,” it said.

IATA Director General Willie Walsh said in 2023, jet operations saw no hull losses or fatalities and added that “2023 also saw the lowest fatality risk and ‘all accident’ rate on record”.

People Without Tails? Scientists Identify Genetic Mutation Behind Condition

People Without Tails? Scientists Identify Genetic Mutation Behind Condition

The mutation that led to the tail loss occurred roughly 25 million years ago.

Washington:

Director James Cameron’s “Avatar” movies are populated by a species of outsized blue beings resembling humans, except with tails. So why does our species lack a tail, considering that our evolutionary forerunners in the primate lineage had them?

Scientists on Wednesday identified what might be the genetic mechanism behind the tailless condition of us and our ape ancestors – a mutation in a gene instrumental in embryonic development. The tail was a feature of most vertebrates for more than half a billion years, and its loss may have offered advantages as our ancestors moved from the trees to the ground, they said.

The researchers compared the DNA of two groups of primates: monkeys, which have tails, and hominoids – humans and apes – which do not. They found a mutation in a gene called TBXT that was present in people and apes but absent in monkeys. To test the effects of this mutation, the researchers genetically modified laboratory mice to have this trait. These mice ended up with either a reduced tail or none at all.

“For the first time, we propose a plausible scenario for the genetic mechanism that led to the loss of the tail in our ancestors. It’s surprising that such a big anatomical change can be caused by such a small genetic change,” said New York University Langone Health geneticist and systems biologist Itai Yanai, who helped lead the study published in the journal Nature.

The absence of a tail may have better balanced the body for orthograde – upright – locomotion and eventually bipedalism, said geneticist and systems biologist Bo Xia of Harvard University and the Broad Institute, the study’s lead author.

The mutation that led to the tail loss, according to the researchers, occurred roughly 25 million years ago, when the first apes evolved from monkey ancestors. Our species, Homo sapiens, appeared roughly 300,000 years ago.

The evolutionary lineage that led to apes and people split from the lineage that led to today’s Old World monkeys, a family that includes baboons and macaques. Hominoids today include humans, the “great apes” – chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, orangutans – and the “lesser apes” – gibbons. The earliest-known hominoid, called Proconsul, was tailless.

Hominoids evolved the formation of fewer tail vertebrae, losing an external tail. Vestiges of a tail remain in humans. A bone at the base of the spinal column called the coccyx, or tailbone, is formed from fused remnants of tail vertebrae.

For many vertebrates, a tail has helped with functions like locomotion – think of propulsion by fish and whales – and defense – as with dinosaurs that wielded tails with clubs or spikes. Some monkeys and some other animals have prehensile tails that can grasp objects like tree limbs.

“A tail may be advantageous when you live in trees. As soon as you transition to land, though, it may be more of a liability,” Yanai said.

The advantages obtained by going tailless appear to have come with a cost. Because genes may contribute to multiple functions in the body, mutations that confer an advantage in one area may be detrimental in another.

In this case, the modified mice showed a small increase in severe birth defects, called neural tube defects, of the spinal cord, resembling spina bifida in people.

“This suggests that the evolutionary pressure to lose the tail was so great that, despite creating the potential for this condition (neural tube defects), we still lost the tail,” Yanai said.

It is an interesting thought experiment to ponder whether humans could have evolved with tails. The Na’vi people of “Avatar,” alas, are science fiction.

“I’m a fan of James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ – it’s just a beautiful world, and the Na’vi people use their tails for direct communication,” Xia said. “I hope to ask James why he created Na’vi people with tails.”

Manipur Tribal Affairs Minister Absent For 10 Months, Replace Him: Naga MLAs

Manipur Tribal Affairs Minister Absent For 10 Months, Replace Him: Naga MLAs To Chief Minister

Manipur is yet to return to normalcy 10 months since ethnic clashes began

Imphal/Guwahati:

Ten Naga MLAs in Manipur have demanded the appointment of a new minister to look after tribal affairs and hill matters amid the disruption caused by the ethnic violence in the state bordering troubled Myanmar.

In a letter to Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, the Naga MLAs said the Tribal Affairs and Hills Minister Letpao Haokip has been “absent” for the past 10 months, and this portfolio is key to bringing peace in Manipur.

Mr Haokip is among the 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs who have been seeking a separate administration carved out of Manipur, a demand that for a long time Kuki-Zo insurgent groups, too, have been negotiating with the Centre.

The 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs also face criticism from their own community for supporting the ruling BJP government headed by Biren Singh, who the Kuki-Zo tribes hold responsible for the violence.

After clashes broke out between the hill-majority Kuki-Zo tribes and the valley-majority Meiteis in May 2023, Kuki-Zo civil society groups such as the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) and the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) have also joined the call for a separate administration.

This single demand has brought the insurgent groups, the 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs, and the civil society groups on the same page.

“As you are aware of the difficulties faced by the innocent citizens of Manipur due to unrest happening in our state, in this hour of crisis, we would like to appeal you to kindly look into the matter of the functioning of the Tribal Affairs and Hills Department, which has been rendered defunct due to the absence of the Minister… for the last 10 months,” the 10 Naga MLAs said in the letter to the Chief Minister.

“It is pertinent to point out that this department is becoming more crucial in this hour of crisis to look after the needs and development of tribals and hill areas of the state to bring overall peace and progress in the state,” the Naga MLAs said. “Therefore, we would like to request you to appoint a Tribal Affairs and Hills Minister in-charge to look after the affairs of tribals and hills efficiently and effectively,” they said.

The 10 Naga MLAs are Awangbow Newmai, Khashim Vashum, Loshii Dikho, N Kayisii, Leishiyo Keishing, Janghemlung Panmei, SS Olish, Ram Muivah, J Kumo Sha, and Dinganglung Gangmei.

The Kukis had fought with the Nagas in the early 90s after the Nagas accused them of encroaching on their land. Many from both tribes were killed in that conflict. The Nagas who lived in the border town Moreh eventually left the area en masse, while the Kukis, who share ethnic and familial ties with Myanmar’s Chin people, stayed on and became the dominant community.

The Naga tribes live in many hill districts of Manipur, a majority of them towards the east and northeast part of the state.

The violence over disagreements on land, resources, political representation, and affirmative action policies in Manipur has dragged on for nearly 10 months now.

Over 200 have died and thousands have been internally displaced.
