EA to lay off 5% of workforce, affecting nearly 670 employees

San Francisco: Popular video gaming company EA (Electronic Arts) is laying off 5 per cent of its workforce, or nearly 670 employees.

The company’s CEO Andrew Wilson said that the move is to “streamline our company operations to deliver deeper, more connected experiences for fans everywhere.”

EA had about 13,400 employees as of 2023, according to media reports.

“We are also sunsetting games and moving away from development of future licensed IP that we do not believe will be successful in our changing industry,” Wilson wrote in a memo to staff.

The job cuts will support EA’s “strategic priorities and growth initiatives.”

“We are continuing to optimize our global real estate footprint to best support our business,” Wilson said.

In March last year, EA had laid off around 6 per cent of its workforce amid global macro-economic uncertainties.

At the time, Wilson had told employees that as the company drives greater focus across its portfolio, “we are moving away from projects that do not contribute to our strategy, reviewing our real estate footprint, and restructuring some of our teams”.

Earlier this week, Sony announced to lay off about 900 employees in its PlayStation division, or 8 per cent of its workforce.

Man poses as girl on Snapchat, blackmails minor to share objectionable pics

New Delhi:  A 27-year-old man was nabbed from Uttarakhand for allegedly impersonating as a girl while tricking and blackmailing a minor girl to share her obscene images on social media site Snapchat, a Delhi Police official said on Thursday.

The accused has been identified as Subhan Ali, a resident of Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand.

Police said that on February 20, the father of the complainant, who is a minor school going girl, lodged a complaint regarding harassment, and blackmailing of her daughter on the threat of sharing her nude photos and video.

He further told police that her daughter studies in school and she used the smart phone for taking online classes. “One day, his wife saw her phone and found obscene video and photos of his daughter on Snapchat and they reported the matter,” said a senior police official.

Immediately, the matter was taken up and it was found that the alleged person impersonated himself as a girl to the victim on Snapchat and started chatting with her.

“He used to play a game of ‘Truth and Dare’ and he dared her to be in an obscene condition. The victim got in his trap and the accused got her naked photos and video. Later the accused had continuous chats with the victim and obtained more such photos,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Rohit Meena.

The accused insisted her for chats and extended threats if she did not follow his instructions.

“Accordingly, a case under section 354 D of the IPC and 12 POCSO Act was registered and investigation was taken up,” said the DCP.

During the probe, important leading information were obtained from Snapchat and Google and thorough technical analysis was done in which a mobile number was found active at Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand.

“On February 24, raids were conducted at possible locations of the accused in Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand and the accused was apprehended,” said the DCP.

On interrogation, he admitted og his involvement in the crime. “One smart phone through which he committed an offence was also recovered from his possession,” the DCP added.

Hardik Pandya will soon be at the centre of attraction when the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 starts. He will be leading the Mumbai Indians after replacing Rohit Sharma as captain. Pandya has not played international cricket for India since suffering an ankle injury during India’s ICC Cricket World Cup group stage match against Bangladesh in October last year. He missed out on the series of five T20Is against Australia at home, the tour to South Africa as well.

Ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, last November Pandya was traded to Mumbai Indians (MI) from the Gujarat Titans (GT), replacing their five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy-winning MI skipper Rohit Sharma in the 2024 season of the cash-rich league.

Ahead of the IPL, Hardik Pandya has opened up on many unknown facets about him.

“One thing my fans don’t know about me is that I don’t go out. I am a home boy. I have hardly been out in the last three to four years; the only occasions I have stepped out is when it has been unavoidable, something happened with my friends. I like to stay at home. There was this time when I did not step out of home for 50 days. I did not even see the home lift,” he said on a chat show with the UK 07 rider.”I have my home gym, home theatre. The things that I like are in my home.”

Hardik Pandya was asked about one of his photos in a super car that went viral on social media. Pandya revealed somebody sent him the car for test-drive. Then he went on to say: “Main kabhi media mein comment karta nahi hu, to maine kabhi kia nahi, na mereko fadak padta hai (I don’t comment in media, I have never done it, it does not bother me),” Hardik Pandya said.

He also revealed a funny incident when he thought the prize money from a ‘Man of the Match’ trophy goes only to the player who won it.

“I thought a player who is awarded as man of the match receives all the money. So when I won the MOM, I thought that the money was for me, but then I learnt that it gets divided among the team. After all, it is a team sport,” he laughed.

Karimnagar: Cop carries man on shoulders for 2 km to save his life

Karimnagar: A Blue Colt constable saved the life of a man by carrying him on his shoulders for about two kilometres in Bethigal of Veenavanka mandal on Wednesday.

A resident of Bethigal, Kurra Suresh allegedly tried to die by suicide by consuming pesticide due to family disputes. Other farmers, who noticed Suresh lying his field, informed the police by dialing 100.

Knowing about the incident, Blue Colt constable Jayapal along with homeguard Sampath rushed to the spot. Without wasting time, Jayapal carried Suresh on his shoulders to reach the village by walking along the bunds of the agricultural fields.

Later, with the support of villagers, they shifted Suresh to Jammikunta hospital, where he is undergoing treatment and his condition was stated to be stable.

Police officials, public representatives and others appreciated Jayapal’s lifesaving effort.

Syria confronts Israeli airstrike near Damascus: Report

The act of aggression was carried out on Wednesday from the direction of the country’s Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported, citing a military source.

The source specified the time of the attack as several locations close to the capital and its time as roughly 21:35 local time (20:35 GMT).

“The Syrian Army’s air defense [units] confronted the missiles and brought down most of them,” the source said, adding that the airstrike had just resulted in some “material damage.”

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a so-called monitor, said the incoming Israeli projectiles had hit “two locations” near Damascus.

Syria and the Israeli regime are technically at war due to the latter’s 1967-present occupation of the Golan Heights.

The regime has carried out hundreds of attacks against the country after 2011, when the Arab nation found itself in the grip of rampant foreign-backed militancy and terrorism.

Tel Aviv has significantly ramped up the strikes since last October, when it began a genocidal war against the Gaza Strip, in what has been described by observers, as a reckless bid threatening to fan tensions throughout the region.

On Sunday, at least three people were killed when an Israeli unnamed aerial vehicle carried out a strike against the western Syrian province of Homs, close to the border with Lebanon.

Damascus has repeatedly complained to the United Nations over the Israeli assaults, urging the world body’s Security Council to take action against Tel Aviv’s crimes. Its demands have, however, fallen on deaf ears.

New Pakistan Government Will Rely On "Goodwill Of Military", Say Experts

New Pakistan Government Will Rely On 'Goodwill Of Military', Say Experts

Pakistan’s voters expressed their disillusionment with the nation’s powerful military in a surprising election result earlier this month. But the army is still poised to have more control from behind the scenes than ever – and reviving the economy will be its ultimate test.

The military, which has ruled Pakistan directly or indirectly for most of its modern history, is set to make all important decisions on foreign policy and security for the country’s new government and have a more expanded role in running the nation’s economy, a person familiar with the matter said. Shehbaz Sharif, who’s expected to become prime minister, is likely to be only a figurehead, the person said, asking not to be identified because the information is private.

The army is consolidating power as Pakistan faces the worst inflation in Asia, a crippling debt load and the need to negotiate another bailout from the International Monetary Fund. Observers are largely pessimistic that a weak coalition propped up by the military will fare any better than similar governments in the past.

While the army “definitely has more credibility” than politicians, “it has not shown historically a strong grasp or understanding of what needs to be done,” said Yousuf Nazar, a former Citigroup Inc. banker and author of The Gathering Storm: Pakistan.

Pakistan’s military and Sharif’s party did not respond to a request for a comment.

Pakistan’s two old-guard political parties – controlled by the Sharif and Bhutto clans – agreed last week to form a government, breaking an almost two-week impasse after an inconclusive election on Feb. 8. The elected lawmakers will meet on February 29 in the first session of National Assembly that will select a prime minister with former premier Shehbaz Sharif expected to take the job.

The move thwarts the former premier Imran Khan, who fell out of favor with the military and ended up in jail. His party colleagues were forced to run as independents, and still won the most seats but fell short of an outright majority. Khan’s party did better than most surveys, which is seen as a sharp rebuke of the military’s attempts to sideline Khan and engineer the elections to their desired outcome.

The new coalition regime “will be entirely reliant on the goodwill of the military to be able to stay in place,” said Omar Warraich, a political commentator and special advisor at Open Society Foundations, an organization that gives grants in support of civil society. The army can easily bring it down if it disagrees on policy, he said.

That has been the story for much of Pakistan’s history since independence in 1947. Khan himself, for instance, was widely seen as backed by the generals when he came to power in 2018. But the relationship soured when the former cricketer tried to influence military appointments, leading to his ouster. Shehbaz was anointed as his successor. His brother Nawaz, a three-time former premier, also had a history of being backed and then deposed by the military, including once in a coup.

Shehbaz has been conciliatory with the military, including publicly praising army chief Asim Munir. During his time in office, Shehbaz’s government passed two bills to give the military more power. One criminalized criticism of the armed forces; the other gave the security forces unlimited power to arrest any individual they deem a threat.

Pakistan set up a Special Investment Facilitation Council in June, during Shehbaz’s term, to promote foreign investments and spur growth. One of the council’s members is the army chief, Munir. Its immediate aim has been to increase foreign direct investment to $5 billion. So far no major deals have been signed.

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2023 Democracy Index, released earlier this month, downgraded Pakistan to an “authoritarian regime” from a “hybrid regime.”

Pakistan’s arch-rival India expects Pakistan’s military to play a more pivotal role with the fractured mandate making it impossible for any individual leader turning against the army, an official familiar with the matter said, asking not to be identified as the person isn’t authorized to speak to the media. They do not rule out peace overtures with India after new governments settle in both countries, said the official. India’s elections are scheduled for later this year.

Some in Pakistan see the military’s heavy-handed role as a good thing.

“Whenever we’ve had a military government, decision-making is easier. So the economic indicators are at times better,” said Omar Mahmood Hayat, a retired military lieutenant general and chairman of Unity Foods Ltd., a Pakistani food manufacturer, citing the economy under former military dictator Pervez Musharraf.

Musharraf ruled from 1999 until 2008 and oversaw an economy that fared better than other elected governments, according to the misery index by Bloomberg Economics, which looks at unemployment and inflation rates. Musharraf was favored by Western allies. His tenure, which largely coincided with the worst years of the War on Terror, saw a healthy inflow of dollars into Pakistan for combating terrorism.

Hayat says the army offers continuity of policies that civilian governments often can’t.

One question is how the public will respond to the new government after voters delivered a rebuke to the status quo by voting for Khan’s loyalists. Supporters of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party took to the streets last weekend to protest alleged vote-rigging.

“Definitely the message is that people are not happy with their intervention,” Ayesha Siddiqa, a political scientist and senior fellow at King’s College London, said of the army.

Shehbaz’s brother, Nawaz, was widely expected to become the new prime minister, with the backing of the army, after he returned from exile in London and was acquitted of corruption charges.

But Shehbaz became the military’s choice, according to Mohammad Waseem, a political science professor at Lahore University of Management Sciences.

“He is a great compromiser,” Waseem said. “He will try to stabilize the situation by giving and taking during critical moments.”

Still, brokering an agreement with the IMF will for Sharif – and the military behind him – require accepting tough conditions from the multilateral lender, which are likely to anger the public even more.

The military may be more powerful than ever, but it has never faced a harder task.

“The economic crisis has now become a national security issue,” Warraich said. “If this economic turnaround doesn’t work, it can easily all be put on Shehbaz Sharif and he could be dispensed with.”

Government of India mandates fixed charges for blood banks

Hyderabad: In a bid to ensure fair pricing and accessibility to life-saving blood and its components, the Government of India has mandated that blood banks adhere strictly to fixed charges. This directive covers various components like plasma, platelets, and more.

Recently, the Drugs Control Administration in Telangana conducted surprise raids at nine blood centers on the 21st and 22nd of February. Shockingly, instances of overcharging were uncovered, particularly for Fresh Frozen Plasma, Platelet Concentrate, Single Donor Platelets, and Packed Red Cells.

These findings have prompted authorities to take stringent action against blood centers found guilty of overcharging. The move underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring affordable healthcare for all citizens.

Mamata Banerjee vs BJP Over Sandeshkhali Accused Sheikh Shahjahan's Arrest

New Delhi:

After being on the run for 55 days, Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan was today arrested on charges of torture, sexual harassment, and land grabbing in Bengal’s Sandeshkhali. The arrest has sparked a political slugfest between the ruling TMC and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

In a late-night operation, a special team of the Bengal police arrested Sheikh Shahjahan from a house in North 24 Parganas district. The leader and his associates have been accused of sexual atrocities on women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali.

Soon after the arrest, Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said that the state police went ahead with the arrest as soon as the legal hurdles were cleared.

“Due to a legal tangle, he couldn’t be arrested initially. However, after the court clarified that there was no stay on his arrest, the West Bengal Police did its job,” Mr Ghosh said.

Mr Ghosh accused the opposition of exploiting the earlier “embargo” on Sheikh’s arrest.

The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday had directed that Sheikh could be arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Enforcement Directorate (ED), or the West Bengal Police. This decision came after Monday’s directive, where the court ordered the state police to arrest Sheikh within seven days.

“We had said he would be arrested in seven days as we were confident of the ability of the state police,” stated Mr Ghosh.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party has dubbed the arrest a scripted drama. BJP state spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya claimed, “It was TMC and the state police which were shielding the culprits. He has been arrested now as a part of a well-scripted story.”

The BJP had earlier alleged that Sheikh was in the “safe custody” of the state police since Tuesday night. The conflicting narratives between the two political parties have added fuel to the already intense political atmosphere in West Bengal.

The Sandeshkhali area, situated on the borders of the Sundarbans, has been gripped by unrest for over a month. The protests stem from accusations of sexual abuse and land grabbing against Shajahan Sheikh and his supporters.

Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee had said that she has “never allowed injustice” and accused the Opposition party of inciting trouble on the island in North 24 Parganas district.

“I have never allowed injustice in my life. I sent (representatives of) the state women’s commission (to Sandeshkhali) immediately and 17 people have been arrested,” Ms Banerjee said in the Assembly, shortly after main Opposition BJP staged a walkout over the raging issue earlier this month.
