Iran to work on ditching US dollar in trade transactions

Iran, like other BRICS members, will work on the de-dollarization of trade, economic and financial transactions within the group of major emerging economies, and some efforts in this direction are already underway, Bagheri Kani told Sputnik.

“We have planned many missions and joint work with other BRICS members within the framework of this organization. One of the most important tasks is the de-dollarization of trade and economic transactions and financial cooperation,” he said.

The senior Iranian diplomat added that “activities in this field […] have already started,” and the country hopes “to strengthen and expand these activities in order to achieve this goal as soon as possible.”

BRICS, established in 2009, is a group uniting the world’s largest developing economies, which currently includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
In August, the 15th top-level BRICS summit in Johannesburg extended invitations to Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia to join the bloc. Their full membership, except for Argentina, would take effect on January 1, 2024.

Karthik Questions Gill's Place In Team With 'Sarfaraz, Patidar' Reminder

Shubman Gill couldn’t deliver in 1st Test vs South Africa© AFP

The Indian cricket team’s horrific show in the first Test against South Africa in Centurion raises many questions on the team’s ability to win in SENA countries. Since Kohli stepped down as India’s Test skipper, the national team hasn’t managed to register a single win in any of the SENA nations. Though ther remain many areas of improvements, veteran wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik has raised questions on Shubman Gill‘s place in the team, with a reminder of some domestic stars who are waiting for an opportunity in the whites.

Gill registered scores of 2 and 26 in the two innings as India lost by an innings and 32 runs in Centurion. Only the likes of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli managed to put in a reasonable show with the bat while all other batters struggled.

Karthik, however, had no qualms in admitting that Gill’s place in the team is bound to be under the scanner.

“Shubman Gill is the big question mark here. He has not lived up to the expectations that people have. I think even he would be aware that if you are going to average mid-30s or early-30s after having played 20 Tests, then you would consider yourself to be a bit lucky to be around. His place will definitely be under the scanner if he doesn’t have a great Test match in the next one,” Karthik said on Cricbuzz.

As for Gill’s replacemens, Karthik feels the likes of Sarfaraz Khan and Rajat Patidar, both of whom have been top performers in domestic cricket, are likely to get their opportunities soon.

“The only middle-order name that we are missing out on is Sarfaraz Khan. I have no doubt that he will make it to the squad much sooner than he thinks right now. Other than that, you do not have any other names doing the round in the middle order right now. Rajat Patidar is a very, very strong name that I think they will be looking at very soon,” said the wicketkeeper-batter.

Israel’s friends are planning for post-Israel era: Iranian FM

During a briefing session on Sunday, Amir-Abdollahian provided members of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission with a comprehensive report on the latest developments in the region arising from the Israeli regime’s war of aggression against the Gaza Strip.

Zahra Elahian, a committee member, told IRNA that the foreign minister said the Al-Aqsa Storm operation, launched by the Palestinian Resistance movement Hamas on October 7, was a “turning point” for the Resistance front in the region.

“Today, the Zionist regime is in such a state that even its friends do not hold hope for it and are thinking about a post-Israel era,” Elahian quoted the top Iranian diplomat as saying.

The foreign minister also pointed out that the United States is currently facing unprecedented pressure at home and abroad over its support for the Israeli regime, she added.

Elahian said that Amir-Abdollahian also provided lawmakers with a detailed report on the ongoing diplomatic efforts to support the Palestinian people, including negotiations with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, and Jordan.

"Willing To Work With Joe Biden": Xi Jinping On 'Stable' US-China Ties

'Willing To Work With Joe Biden': Xi Jinping On 'Stable' US-China Ties

Beijing:

China’s President Xi Jinping said Monday he was willing to work with the United States to promote stable bilateral ties, exchanging congratulations with his US counterpart on the anniversary of diplomatic relations, state media said.

Xi and US President Joe Biden met in San Francisco in November, vowing to improve communication in an effort to stop competition from spilling over into conflict.

And in an exchange of messages to mark the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, Xi said both sides should “take practical actions to promote the stable, healthy and sustainable development of China-US relations”.

“Xi Jinping emphasised, I am willing to work with President Biden to continue to navigate China-US relations, benefit both China and the United States and their people, and promote world peace and development,” state broadcaster CCTV said.

Xi added that “adhering to mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation is the correct way for China and the United States to interact”, CCTV said.

Video: Dalit Woman Beaten By Cop In Public View In Bihar; Police Clarify

The cop was filmed in his uniform during the incident, triggering an outrage among the public.

Patna:

The visuals of a Dalit woman being beaten by a cop in public view in Bihar’s Sitamarhi has raised concerns over police brutality and prompted a public demand for action. But the police claim the cop was only trying to maintain order after a fight erupted between two sides in a kidnapping case.

Inspector Rajkishore Singh, in-charge of Surasand police station, was seen thrashing the woman on the street with a stick. He struck her multiple times in the Surasand market amid angry exchanges by a crowd, showed a video.

The cop was filmed in his uniform during the incident, triggering an outrage among the public.

Sitamarhi Police, in a statement, said a probe has been ordered into the incident.

The police action allegedly came in a bid to separate two women who were fighting on the street.

Vinod Kumar, Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO), said in a video statement that the incident is linked to the kidnapping of a girl.

“The girl was rescued, but the two sides visited the police station and engaged in a fight among themselves outside. This led to a traffic jam on the road and the cop used his baton to disperse the crowd,” he clarified.

Iran’s security chief meets senior Ansarullah official

Ahmadian met and held talks with Abdul-Salam in the Iranian capital city of Tehran on Sunday.

The two sides exchanged views over issues of mutual interest and regional security.

Praising the resistance of the Yemeni people and government during the difficult years, Ahmadian hailed their courageous actions in supporting the Palestinian people against the aggression and brutal attacks of the Zionist regime.

Yemenis have declared their open support for Palestine’s struggle against the Israeli occupation since the regime launched a devastating war on Gaza on October 7 after the territory’s Palestinian Resistance movements carried out a surprise retaliatory attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, against the occupying entity.

The Yemeni armed forces have in the past several weeks carried out missile and drone attacks on Israeli positions and stepped up attacks against Israeli-linked ships in the Red Sea. They say the attacks will continue until the war stops and Gazans receive the food and medicine they need.

The relentless Israeli military campaign against Gaza has killed over 21,500 people, most of them women and children. Another 55,660 individuals have been wounded.

ISRO Launches Mission To Study Black Holes, 2nd After NASA To Do So

New Delhi:
On New Year’s Day, India started a new mission to solve what is among the oldest mysteries of the universe – black holes. At 9.10 am, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched the XPoSAT or X-ray Polarimeter Satellite from Sriharikota

Here are 10 facts from this big story

  1. At 9.32 am, ISRO announced that the lift-off of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) was normal and XPoSAT was launched successfully. “PSLV-C58 vehicle placed the satellite precisely into the intended orbit of 650 km with 6-degree inclination. The POEM-3 is being scripted,” ISRO posted in X. Soon after, ISRO chief S Somanath announced the successful launch.

  2. Astrophysicist Dipankar Bhattacharya told NDTV that today’s launch was a “textbook launch”. “The expected orbit has been achieved. Now all the expected science is hopefully going to work as planned,” he said.

  3. The XPoSAT mission launch also marked the 60th flight of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). The 260-tonne rocket carries an advanced astronomy observatory meant to study black holes and neutron stars. With this, India is set to become only the second country after the US to have an ‘observatory’ to study black holes.

  4. Using X-ray photons and their polarisation, XPoSAT will help study the radiation from near black holes and neutron stars. It carries two payloads — POLIX (Polarimeter Instrument in X-rays) and XSPECT (X-ray Spectroscopy and Timing).

  5. The satellite will measure polarisation of X-rays in the energy band 8-30keV emanating from about 50 potential cosmic sources through Thomson Scattering by POLIX payload.

  6. It will carry out long term spectral and temporal studies of cosmic X-ray sources. It will also carry out polarisation and spectroscopic measurements of X-ray emissions from cosmic sources through POLIX and XSPECT payloads.

  7. When stars run out of fuel and ‘die’, they collapse under their own gravity and leave behind black holes or neutron stars. Black holes have the highest gravitational force in the universe, and neutron stars have the highest densities. Gathering more information on this, the mission will help unravel mysteries of ultra-extreme environments in space.

  8. The XPoSat satellite cost around Rs 250 crore (approximately $30 million). The NASA IXPE — which is on a similar mission since 2021 — cost $188 million. The Indian satellite is expected to last more than five years, compared to the two-year life span of the NASA IXPE.

  9. Former ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair has said the PSLV rocket system has evolved as the most reliable and cost-effective one in the global scenario. “When we look back in history, we started this journey in 1993 and since then, most of the missions have been successfully completed,” he told news agency ANI.

  10. 2023 was a great year for ISRO and the country. The success of the Chandrayaan mission put India into the elite space club, with the distinction of being the only country to achieve a soft landing near the South Pole of the moon. As 2024 begins, ISRO has its eyes focused on the Gaganyaan launch, India’s first human spaceflight programme.

ISRO successfully launches its maiden X-Ray polarimeter satellite

Sriharikota: ISRO on Monday successfully launched its maiden X-Ray Polarimeter Satellite that would offer several insights into celestial objects like black holes.

ISRO’s ever reliable Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) in its C58 mission, placed the primary X-Ray Polarimeter satellite XPoSat into a 650 Km Low Earth Orbit as intended after lifting off at the pre-fixed time of 9.10 am from the first launch pad here.

As the 25-hour countdown concluded, the 44.4-metre tall rocket lifted off majestically with thunderous applause from spectators who had descended here in large numbers at this spaceport situated about 135 km east of Chennai.

The X-ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat) is aimed to investigate the polarisation of intense X-ray sources in space.

According to ISRO, it is the first dedicated scientific satellite from the space agency to carry out research in space-based polarisation measurements of X-ray emission from celestial sources.

The X-Ray polarisation serves as a crucial diagnostic tool for examining the radiation mechanism and geometry of celestial sources.

The primary payload of XPoSat is POLIX (Polarimeter Instrument in X-Rays) which is designed to measure polarimetry parameters by Raman Research Institute and XSPECT (X-ray Spectroscopy and Timing) built by the U R Rao Satellite Centre, Bengaluru. The Mission life is about five years.
