Thousands of Gaza cancer patients face deadly treatment delays

More than 10,000 cancer patients in Gaza do not have access to life-saving treatments following the forced shutdown of the only cancer hospital amid the Israeli war, according to health authorities.

Cancer patients are enduring “unbearable” and “inhumane” conditions in the besieged territory, Palestinian news agency WAFA quoted local health officials as saying on Tuesday.

The report added that patients do not have access to specialized cancer treatment medications.

“After the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital for Cancer was forced to go out of service, 10,000 cancer patients are facing compelling and inhumane circumstances,” Dr. Subhi Skaik, director of the cancer hospital, said in a statement on Monday.

Gaza’s healthcare system has suffered a complete breakdown as a result of the extensive bombardment carried out by Israeli forces after it unleashed a war on Gaza on October 7.

According to WAFA, the third and final floor of the Palestinian-Turkish Friendship Hospital was targeted by Israeli airstrikes on October 30, causing significant damage and rendering the hospital out of service.

Two days later, Palestinian health authorities said the hospital was closed as it ran out of fuel amid the Israeli regime’s crippling blockade of the territory.

Financed by the Turkish government, the hospital stands as one of the largest medical facilities in Palestine. Covering an area of 34,800 square meters and spanning three floors, the hospital had 180 beds.

The absence of this crucial medical facility exacerbates the already challenging situation for cancer patients in the besieged enclave.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in a post on social media, said strikes on the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital in Gaza were “terribly concerning.”

“Cancer patients are already fragile, and it’s imperative to do everything possible to ensure they’re receiving the care they need, it’s truly a matter of life or death,” he wrote.

Israel’s siege on Gaza has led to a severe shortage of food, water, as well as electricity and fuel.

The acute fuel shortage has made the provision of adequate healthcare services extremely challenging as vital equipment at hospitals cannot operate, putting those in intensive care units at extreme risk.

More than 22,000 people, most of them children and women, have been killed in Gaza since the onset of the Israeli military campaign following an operation by Gaza’s resistance movements.

5 Of 6 Coast Guard Crew On Plane Japan Flight Hit Are Missing: Report

Visuals showed flames coming out of the windows and the plane’s nose on the ground.

Five of the six people on the coast uard plane that reportedly collided with a Japan Airlines plane on the runway of Tokyo’s Haneda Airport today are unaccounted for, broadcaster NHK said. “There were 6 people in the aircraft, of which one escaped, and the safety of five people is unknown,” the Japan Coast Guard told NHK.

The coast guard aircraft was an Ma72 fixed-wing aircraft, it said.

The accident came a day after a powerful earthquake struck central Japan on Monday, killing at least 30 people, destroying buildings and knocking out power to tens of thousands of homes. The Jiji news agency reported the coast guard plane was scheduled to leave to help with rescue efforts following a massive earthquake in central Japan.

The Japan Airlines plane was sen moving along the runaway a large explosion of orange flames exploded from beneath and behind it. All 379, including eight children and 12 crew members, on board the Airbus plane have been evacuated.

Visuals showed flames coming out of the windows and the plane’s nose on the ground as rescue workers sprayed it. Burning debris were also seen on the runway. As per reports, more than 70 fire engines have been deployed to extinguish the fire.

Reports said that the plane had just arrived from Sapporo airport on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. A coast guard official at Haneda Airport, one of the world’s busiest, said they were “checking details”.

All runways at the Haneda airport have been closed after the accident, an official said.

Japan has not suffered a serious commercial aviation accident in decades.

Its worst ever was in 1985, when a JAL jumbo jet flying from Tokyo to Osaka crashed in central Gunma region, killing 520 passengers and crew.

That disaster was one of the world’s deadliest plane crashes involving a single flight.

Cautious celebrations: Numaish opens amidst Covid scare in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Hyderabadi’s can’t think of the New Year without the Numaish. It’s no different this year. But as the 83rd edition of the All India Industrial Exhibition got underway, there was a cautious jubilation. The eagerly looked forward to consumer fair comes amidst reports of a spike in Covid cases. Will it impact the Numaish? Authorities brush off concerns, asserting the show must go on.

However, it remains a worrisome point with visitors who flock the trade fair in thousands. Even on the first day the sprawling ground teemed with anticipation. Colourul banners, tastefully decked up stalls and old movie numbers seemed to cast a spell. At 40 rupees, it is the most inexpensive amusement which families don’t want to miss. Yet, beneath the festivities, a collective unease lingers. Would the virus disrupt the cherished celebrations? In 2022 the exhibition had to be indefinitely suspended amidst spread of the Omicron variant and sharp rise in Covid cases.

IT Minister and Exhibition Society president, D. Sridhar Babu, has appealed to visitors to mandatorily wear masks while coming to the exhibition and strictly adhere to the Covid norms. The Exhibition Society has provided a Covid vaccination facility and a medical check-up centre for the benefit of visitors.

The first day passed off smoothly with laughter and excitement in the air. The annual carnival forges ahead, a symbol of resilience against adversity. However, an undercurrent of caution pulses through the attendees as not many are seen donning the mask. Few seem concerned about striking a balance between revelry and responsibility.

How the Numaish started

All big things have small beginnings. It is no different with Numaish, the most popular consumer fair of Hyderabad. But the grandeur of the present spectacle contrasts starkly with its humble origins in 1938. Back then, this vibrant gathering of commerce and culture was a modest affair. The ‘Numaish Masnuat-e-Mulki’ as it was originally called, was inaugurated by the 7th Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, coinciding with his birth anniversary in Public Gardens. The first Numaish lasted for just 10 days and the next year it was organised for 15 days. As its popularity grew, it was extended for a whole month. The annual show was shifted to its present location in 1946 by Sir Mirza Ismail, the then Prime Minister.

The idea of an exhibition was first mooted by the Economic Committee of the Osmania Graduates’ Association to raise funds for conducting an economic survey of the State. When the proposal was put before the then Prime Minister, Sir Akbar Hyderi, he liked it. As the Numaish gained momentum it grew both in content and coverage drawing visitors by the thousands. It was christened as the All India Industrial Exhibition in 1948. The then Governor General of India, C. Rajagopalchari, inaugurated it in its new avatar.

PA calls on Israel to hand over Gaza infant girl kidnapped by regime’s officer

Israeli military officer Captain Harel Itach kidnapped a Palestinian infant girl from Gaza Strip. He was killed during the war on November 22, 2023.

The Foreign Ministry of the Palestinian Authority (PA) has condemned the “kidnapping” of a Palestinian infant girl by an Israeli officer in the Gaza Strip, calling on the occupying regime to release the baby.

The ministry made the call on Tuesday, days after Israeli soldier Shachar Mendelson, an associate of Captain Harel Itach, told Israel’s Army Radio that the officer had taken a Palestinian infant to a hospital in the occupied territories after Israeli airstrikes claimed the lives of her entire family in Gaza.

Itach was killed in the Gaza war on November 22 and thus the identity and whereabouts of the kidnapped baby remain unknown.

Israel’s Army Radio deleted the tweet that mentioned the abduction of the Gaza infant.

“The kidnapping of the infant girl from the Gaza Strip is evidence that the occupation army is committing the most heinous crimes against civilians without oversight or accountability,” the PA Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“The ministry calls on the occupation authorities to immediately hand over the infant to the Palestinian National Authority.”

Israel waged the genocidal war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian Hamas resistance group carried out a historic operation against the occupying entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

Since the start of the aggression, the Tel Aviv regime has been committing brutal war crimes in Gaza, killing at least 21,978 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injuring 57,697 others.

Thousands more are also missing and presumed dead under the rubble in the Gaza Strip, which is under “complete siege” by Israel.
