Trump appeals disqualification from primary ballot in Maine

Former US President Donald Trump’s campaign has filed an appeal against a decision by Maine’s top election official disqualifying him from the state’s Republican presidential primary ballot next year, according to a court filing.

Trump’s campaign asked a state Superior Court on Tuesday to reverse the decision by Democratic Secretary of State Shenna Bellows disqualifying the former president from the next primary ballot over his “insurrection” role in the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.

The former president’s lawyers argue that the decision was “the product of a process infected by bias and pervasive lack of due process.”

Trump’s lawyers dispute that the former president played a part in any “insurrection” role and also argue that Bellows does not have the authority to ban him from the Republican primary.

On the other side of the ledger, Bellows argues that her decision is in accordance with the rule of law. “I have confidence in my decision and in the rule of law,” Bellows said in a statement after the appeal was filed.

She says Trump cannot serve as the US president under a provision of the US Constitution that bars people from holding office if they engaged in “insurrection” after swearing an oath to the United States.

The US Supreme Court is likely to consider the issue soon, after Colorado’s top court barred Trump from the primary ballot in that state.

Trump’s legal team is expected to appeal the similar decision from Colorado’s Supreme Court.

Advocacy groups and some anti-Trump voters have brought several challenges to Trump’s 2024 candidacy under the provision known as Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.

Trump’s campaign has called the ballot challenges a “hostile assault on American democracy.”

The lawsuits have argued that Trump incited his supporters to violence by spreading false claims that the 2020 election was stolen and then urged them to descend upon the Capitol to stop Congress from certifying Democrat Joe Biden’s victory.

General Qassem Soleimani martyr of entire Islamic world

The following is the text of the letter of Doğu Perinçek, the chairman of Turkey’s Patriotic Party to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution of Iran, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, and Ayatollah Seyyed Ibrahim Raeisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

General Qassem Soleimani and his comrade Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis are martyrs of the Iranian and Iraqi nations, as well as of the entire Islamic world and all the peoples of the world who struggle against imperialism and Zionism.

We are blessed to have so many heroes in this land who did not hesitate to fight against imperialism, Zionism, separatist and takfiri Islamist terrorist organizations.

They thought that they could take over Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Lebanon, Türkiye, Iran, and Palestine by killing Qasem Suleimani. But they could not.

Today, our states and nations, especially Palestine, are fighting on the front line against the aggression of American imperialism and Israeli Zionism. Syria, Iraq,

Iran, Libya, Libya, Palestine, Azerbaijan, and Russia are our frontline brothers in this war.

Qassem Soleimani’s legacy to us is this: US imperialism and Israeli Zionism cannot be defeated with appeals for restraint, pleas, and curses.

We can only prevent aggression against our region with armed determination.

We can only stop the massacres in Gaza and the West Bank by using force.

The staff’s mind and the method of struggle that will lead to the success of the struggle to establish an independent Palestinian state with East Al-Quds as its capital is the struggle to which Qassem Soleimani dedicated his life.

This is the struggle that will uproot imperialist-Zionist aggression from our region. For this, we need the right strategy.

Today, there is a front stretching from the Caucasus and the Black Sea to the Mediterranean, the Strait of Hormuz and
the Sea of Oman.

In this front, all the states and peoples of the region have a common responsibility to fight against US imperialism and Israeli Zionism for
security and prosperity. We all have to be together in every part of the front.

The Eastern Mediterranean is now the focus of the front and the center of the growing danger of war.

The plan for solidarity with Palestine that we are working on as the Vatan Party is this: The states of Türkiye, Syria, Iran, Iraq, and Russia can eliminate the US and Israeli-led ethnic separatist and takfirist terrorist organizations in northern Syria and Iraq through a joint armed operation.

Conditions are favorable. There are brave and determined resistance forces against imperialist-Zionist aggression everywhere in our region.

We are all Palestinians, we are all Qassem Soleimani.

Gaza health care in crisis

The World Health Organization has once again sounded the alarm over the deepening humanitarian and medical crisis in war-torn Gaza, calling on the international community to take urgent steps to alleviate the grave peril facing Palestinians in the besieged territory.

According to the latest WHO assessments, Gaza has 13 partially functioning hospitals, two minimally functioning ones, and 21 that are not functioning at all.

There are actually no functional hospitals left in the north. Al Ahli was the last one but it’s now minimally functioning; it is still treating patients but not admitting new ones, along with Al Shifa, Al Awda and Al Sahaba hospital.

So these hospitals are still sheltering also thousands of displaced people.

At Al Ahli about currently about 10 staff, all junior doctors and nurses, continue to provide basic first aid and pain management, as much as possible, wound care and trauma stabilization services.

Dr Rik Peeperkorn, WHO representative, Gaza

The Nasser Medical Complex, which is the most important referral hospital in southern Gaza, is partially functioning.

The World Health Organization has expressed concern about reports of residential areas being ordered to evacuate around the hospital which is extremely concerning.

According to WHO reports and eyewitness accounts, when military activities intensified near the hospital, ambulances, patients, hospital staff, WHO and partners, were unable to reach the complex.

The WHO has also said that it is working to strengthen and expand the existing struggling health system.

WHO will keep striving to supply health facilities in northern Gaza and without fuel, staff and other essential medicines.

Medicines [alone] will not make a difference and all patients will die slowly and painfully.

Dr Rik Peeperkorn, WHO representative, Gaza

There is concern over the fresh wave of displacement of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip who have been pushed by Israel to move further south.

Such a displacement of people will further strain health facilities in the south, which are already struggling to meet the population’s immense needs.

The WHO has declared that this forced mass movement of people will also lead to more overcrowding, increased risk of infectious diseases, and, make it even harder to deliver humanitarian aid while most of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are grappling with terrible injuries, acute hunger and severe risk of disease.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has also repeated a call on the international community to “take urgent steps to alleviate the grave peril facing the population of Gaza”.

The remarks came a day after the WHO staff went on a high-risk mission to deliver humanitarian supplies to the Al Shifa Hospital, in northern Gaza, and the Al Amal Palestine Red Crescent Society, in southern Gaza.

Both hospitals serve as shelters for displaced Palestinians seeking refuge amid the relentless Israeli bombardment. At the Shifa Hospital, reportedly, 50,000 people are sheltering while 14,000 others are at Al Amal.

I have seen children, women, young men, both men and women, people bleeding out, at the same time yesterday at Al Aqsa I saw a woman who had multiple gunshot wounds, an attempt was made to refer her and she was referred back because she was bleeding so heavily.

here’s blood everywhere in these hospitals. At the moment we’re seeing almost only trauma cases come through the door and at a scale that’s quite difficult to believe. It’s a bloodbath as we said before it started.

Sean Casey, WHO Medical Team Coordinator

I had been injured and have been in the hospital for 10 days. As soon as the Israeli troops withdrew, I rushed to take them.

As you can see, they suffer from total burns for no reason. They were left with no food or water and no care. There were other injured members of my family but I wasn’t able to carry them.

After I arrived at the hospital, I witnessed massive destruction, an indescribable scene, patients are scattered in every corner, beds are overturned, and medical material are damaged.

Injured Palestinian

These comments come as Israel is pressing ahead with its genocidal war in the Gaza Strip.

From corpses lying unattended on streets to hospitals and schools reduced to rubble, to children made orphans and tens of thousands of people rendered homeless.

The events unfolding in the besieged Gaza Strip since October 7th can be considered a classic case of genocide or ethnic cleansing.

The death toll in the coastal territory since the Israeli regime launched its indiscriminate aerial and ground attacks nearly three months ago is now over 21,000, most of whom were women and children.

Almost all refugee camps have been rendered uninhabitable due to random strikes, forcing the majority of the population to sleep under the open sky and with heavy winds and heavy downpours.

The bear tanks were only meant to give an image of victory to its defeated army which has only succeeded in killing unarmed civilians and destroying civilian facilities.

This is really the worst thing that the US and Israel could do to Palestinians. The genocide and the numerous war crimes are [still] going on.

"Didn't Happen In 1st Game…": Rohit's Big Take As India Make Key Changes

South Africa stand-in captain Dean Elgar won the toss and opted to bat against India in the second Test in Cape Town on Wednesday. Elgar, who slammed 185 in the first Test as South Africa defeated India by an innings and 32, runs, will retire from international cricket after the match at the Newlands. The Proteas made three changes with wicketkeeper-batter Tristan Stubbs making his Test debut. Lungi Ngidi and Keshav Maharaj have also been included in the playing XI while Bavuma, Keegan Petersen and Gerald Coetzee miss out. India also made a couple of alterations from the side which was humbled by Proteas on Boxing-Day week.

At the toss, India captain Rohit Sharma announced the changes with Ravindra Jadeja and Mukesh Kumar replacing Ravichandran Ashwin and Shardul Thakur.

Reflecting on the defeat in the first Test, Rohit said that it is important to forget what’s happened in the past.

“Would’ve batted first as well. Looks a good pitch. We understand the challenge of batting first on that pitch, but nevertheless, there will be enough in the pitch for the seamers, so hopefully we’ll cash in on it. Important to forget what’s happened in the past. We understand the importance of getting runs on the board, and getting 20 wickets. Didn’t happen in the first game but we’re upbeat about what we can achieve here. Two changes. Jadeja comes back for Ashwin. Shardul misses out, Mukesh Kumar replaces him,” Rohit said at the toss.

Speaking at the time of toss Elgar said, “Going to bat. Pitch looks interesting. We’re in a great position. Can’t win a two-match series if you don’t win the first – we’ve crossed that hurdle. Scoreboard starts on nought. We all know that. Starting well is going to be key against this Indian side. Got a debutant in Tristan Stubbs coming in for Temba. Ngidi comes in for Coetzee who’s also injured. And Maharaj comes in”.

Playing XIs for 2nd Test:

India (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma(c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w), Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Mukesh Kumar

South Africa (Playing XI): Dean Elgar(c), Aiden Markram, Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs, David Bedingham, Kyle Verreynne(w), Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Nandre Burger, Lungi Ngidi

Assassination of Hamas official to haunt US in region

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a cabinet session on Wednesday, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Ashtiani said the assassination of the senior Hamas official will bedevil the US.

“The US has upset regional balance, and the consequences of this (Israeli) assassination (of Arouri) will beset them,” he warned.

Such moves against the Resistance forces will only strengthen regional solidarity against the American policies, the Iranian minister noted, warning Washington that its strategic mistakes will agitate the region and cause the US plans to backfire.

Senior Hamas official Saleh al-Arouri was killed in an Israeli drone strike on Beirut’s southern suburb of Dahiyeh on Tuesday.

He was a senior official in Hamas’s politburo and was known to be deeply involved in its military affairs. He had previously headed the group’s presence in the occupied West Bank.

Samir Findi Abu Amer and Azzam Al-Aqraa Abu Ammar, leaders of Hamas’ armed wing – the Qassam Brigades – were also killed, Hamas said in a message.

It named four other members of the group who were also killed.

Israel Man Impersonates Soldier, Joins War In Gaza, Poses With Netanyahu

Israel Man Impersonates Soldier, Joins War In Gaza, Poses With PM Netanyahu

Roi Yifrach never served in the Israeli military but apparently used fake identities (Representational)

Tel Aviv, Israel:

He impersonated a soldier to join the war in Gaza, stole weapons after sneaking into an army unit, and joined the fighting against the Palestinian group Hamas. Roi Yifrah, 35, took advantage of the chaotic situation in the aftermath of the war, wore an army uniform to join the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) on the battlefield, and even appeared in a photo next to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during one of his visits to the field.

Roi Yifrach never served in the Israeli military but apparently used fake identities to pose as a member of an elite Shin Bet combat unit, reported news agency Reuters. Shin Bet is Israel’s domestic intelligence agency.

Now, Israeli prosecutors have charged him with various weapons offences, along with theft under aggravated circumstances, The Times Of Israel reported. According to reports, he stole military and police weapons with the intent to sell them on the black market.

A photograph of Roi Yifrah in full battle gear posing with other soldiers alongside Benjamin Netanyahu at a helicopter landing site was aired by one of the channels, Reuters reported.

An Israeli official told Reuters that Yifrah had posed with Netanyahu, but said the prime minister was never at risk due to “several layers of security at the site”.

The Prime Minister’s Office did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

How Yifrach Presented Himself As Combat Soldier

It was on October 7 when Hamas launched an all-out attack in Israel when Roi Yifrah went to southern Israel, CBS News reported. He presented himself alternately as a combat soldier from elite anti-terrorism units, a bomb dispersal expert, and a member of the Shin Bet internal security service, the indictment said

He was arrested last month and police seized large amounts of weapons, grenades, magazines, walkie-talkies, a drone, uniforms, and other military equipment in his possession, it added.

A purloined haul found in Yifrah’s home included an assault rifle, various kinds of bullets, smoke grenades, and holsters, the indictment added.

Lawyer Says He Fought Bravely

Meanwhile, his lawyer Eitan Segev told Israeli media that Yifrach helped as a paramedic with a first responder organization, and fought bravely to defend Israel for more than two months.

“He was helping people and helping rescue people, all under fire, while also fighting against terrorists,” Sabag said.

“My client is a medic who … saved lives under fire, while risking his life and eliminating terrorists,” the lawyer told Channel 12, adding that “the defendant, under the circumstances, is the State of Israel – not Roi Yifrah”.

The five counts against him, including aggravated fraud and larceny, could amount to a maximum prison sentence of 36 years.

Hamas’s bloody October 7 attack on Israel resulted in the deaths of around 1,140 people, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

Hamas also took around 250 hostages back to Hamas-ruled Gaza, of whom 129 remain in captivity, according to Israeli figures.

After the attack, the worst in its history, Israel began a relentless bombardment and ground offensive that has killed at least 22,185 people, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s health ministry

All-Woman Team Perform Ram Leela In Ayodhya Ahead Of Temple Inauguration

Various popular Ram Leelas from India and abroad in Ayodhya

Ayodhya:

Preparations are in full swing in the temple town of Ayodhya for the Ram Temple inauguration ceremony, scheduled for January 22, with various cultural, traditional folk arts and spiritual programs lined up for the big day. Various popular Ram Leelas from India and abroad will be staged to showcase the global significance of Lord Ram, an official release from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said.

In this context, to enhance the glory of the consecration ceremony of Lord Ram in Ayodhya, the staging of various Ram Leelas forms will take place in different cultural centers of Ayodhya from Makar Sankranti (January 15) to January 22.

Ram Leela troupes from states such as Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Karnataka, Sikkim, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Chandigarh will present various events based on the life of Lord Ram.

A group of women from Uttarakhand are performing Ram Leela for the next 11 days in Ayodhya. At least 50 women are enacting Ram Leela in which they would play the roles of Lord Ram and Ravana in the play.

“We have already performed various Ram Leelas in Uttarakhand and now we are getting an opportunity to perform in Ayodhya. We have secured permission from Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra General Secretary Champat Rai and we are delighted to perform here,” one of the women organisers told NDTV, adding that the process was facilitated by Chamoli VHP Chief Pratap Singh Rudra.

Elaborating details on the Ramleelas performed earlier, another organiser said, “We had performed Ram Leela in Delhi and the specialty of our group is we belong from various districts in Uttarakhand. The entire Ram Leela would be enacted by an all-women’s group–be it Lord Ram or Raavan. Some women in our group are engaged in farming but they have come to Ayodhya to take part in Ram Leela.”

Asked why they are participating in the cultural programme, she said, “Our aim is to take Sanatana Dharma forward.”

Performances are planned on the Tulsi Manch at Tulsi Bhawan Memorial, showcasing Ramleelas from different regions of India and the world, reported news agency ANI.

“Under the guidance of Yogi Adityanath, the progress of development in various spiritual cities of the state has given a new identity to Uttar Pradesh. The cultural and spiritual programs taking place in Ayodhya are also being linked with respect for faith. In these programs, priority will be given to those folk traditions that have kept the ideals of Lord Shri Ram alive through their presentations in society,” the official statement said.

Ayodhya rang in the New Year on December 31 night, amid chants of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ as many residents and others gathered at the iconic Lata Mangeshkar Chowk near Naya Ghat.

The consecration of Ram Lalla in the newly built temple in Ayodhya will take place at 12.20 pm on January 22, Mr Rai said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be participating in the consecration ceremony.

PM Modi visited the temple town on December 30 during which he held a roadshow, inaugurated the redeveloped Ayodhya railway station and the newly built airport, and laid the foundation stone for a slew of other projects.

On August 5, 2020, he performed the ‘bhoomipujan’ ceremony in Ayodhya for the upcoming temple.
