A man was discovered dead inside an airplane’s engine at Salt Lake City International Airport, Utah, United States, on Monday. The police stated that the man ran past an emergency door, went onto the tarmac and crawled inside the Delta Airlines jet’s engine, as per a report in CNN.

The Salt Lake City police department said that officers discovered Kyler Efinger, 30, unconscious in an engine attached to the wing of an aircraft carrying passengers. The engine was running and the plane was parked on a de-icing pad. The medical personnel were not able to revive him. “It is unclear at this time what injuries caused the man’s death,” the airport said.

The 30-year-old had a boarding pass for a flight to Denver. According to Delta Airlines, Flight 2348, an Airbus A220 scheduled to take off for San Francisco, then made a U-turn and the 95 passengers deplaned at the gate. The flight was later cancelled.

A store manager at the airport contacted 911 to report a disturbance involving a passenger inside a terminal, prompting police to respond to the airport at approximately 10 pm, according to a press release. The inquiry into the disturbance’s specifics is still ongoing. The police added that the passenger had gone through the terminal’s emergency exit doors and onto the airport’s outdoor ramp area.

According to the release, a pilot claimed to have seen the man during the search. Officers also discovered clothing and shoes, among other personal belongings, on one of the runways a while later.

Mr Efinger was at one of the airport’s jet de-icing pads when dispatchers informed police about him. He had crawled underneath an aircraft and accessed the engine, according to police. The police requested that air traffic controllers instruct the pilot to turn off the aircraft’s engines. However, when the police arrived at the plane, the 30-year-old was found unconscious and “partially inside” one of the plane’s wing-mounted engines, which were still rotating.

“SLCPD officers and Airport Operations pulled the man from the engine’s intake cowling, secured the scene, began lifesaving efforts, and requested emergency medical services,” the release added. However, Mr Efinger died at the airport and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

The case is currently under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration, National Transportation Safety Board and Transportation Security Administration.

Israeli regime’s terror machine, real threat to regional peace: Iran FM

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has denounced as a “cowardly terrorist operation” the assassination of the deputy head of the political bureau of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas by Israel, stressing that the regime’s terror machine is a real threat to regional peace and security.

Amir-Abdollahian made the remarks in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Wednesday, a day after Saleh Al-Arouri and his companions were killed in an Israeli drone attack in the Lebanese capital of Beirut.

“The evil terror machine of this regime in other countries is a real threat to peace and security and a serious alarm for the security of the countries in the region,” he said in the post.

The Iranian diplomat further noted that Israel’s terrorist operations prove that the occupying regime has failed to reach its objectives in the war in Gaza despite US support.

He also offered his condolences to the head of Hamas politburo Ismail Haniyeh and the heroic nation of Palestine on the martyrdom of Arouri.

Arouri, known as the “architect” of the October 7 operation by Gaza’s resistance groups, was killed by an explosion in a building in the southern suburb of the Lebanese capital of Beirut on Tuesday, after an Israeli drone bombed the building with three missiles, killing six people and wounding several others.

The Israeli regime launched its devastating war on the Gaza Strip on October 7. The relentless military campaign has killed more than 22,000 people, most of them children and women.

"Big At Heart": PM Modi Reaches Out To Muslim-Dominated Lakshadweep

'Big At Heart': PM Modi Reaches Out To Muslim-Dominated Lakshadweep

PM Modi was in Lakshadweep to inaugurate and lay the foundation for projects worth Rs 1,150 crore

Kavaratti, Lakshadweep:

Reaching out to the people of the Muslim-dominated Lakshadweep, which witnessed massive protests against reforms introduced by his government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the archipelago is small, but the people have a big heart.

The Prime Minister was in Lakshadweep to inaugurate and lay the foundation for various projects worth Rs 1,150 crore in the Union Territory.

“The area of Lakshadweep may be small, but the people here have a big heart. I am overwhelmed by the love and blessings I am receiving here. I express my gratitude to you all,” said the Prime Minister who reached the islands on Tuesday.

The projects were launched at a function attended by hundreds of islanders including women and children.

Addressing the gathering after launching the projects, PM Modi took a dig at the previous non-BJP governments at the Centre, stating that their only priority for decades was the development of their own political parties.

“Far-off states, border areas, or those in the middle of the ocean were not given any attention,” he said.

Elaborating on the steps taken by his government for the development of such areas, PM Modi said, “In the last 10 years, our government has made border areas and locations at the edge of the sea its priority.”

“In 2020, I guaranteed you that you would get fast internet facility within the next 1,000 days. Today, the Kochi-Lakshadweep Submarine Optical Fibre Project has been inaugurated. Now, the internet in Lakshadweep will be available at 100 times higher speed,” the Prime Minister said.

PM Modi had announced the project in his Independence Day speech in August 2020 at the Red Fort in Delhi.

The transformational initiative aims to overcome the challenge of slow internet speed on Lakshadweep Island. This will result in an increase in internet speed by more than 100 times, from 1.7 Gbps to 200 Gbps, in the islands, according to officials.

They said Lakshadweep is now connected through a submarine optical fibre cable, marking a significant shift in communication infrastructure. This will enhance internet services, telemedicine, e-governance, education, digital banking, currency usage and literacy in the islands, they said.

The Prime Minister also inaugurated the Low Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) plant at Kadmat, which will produce 1.5 lakh litres of clean drinking water every day. Additionally, he dedicated to the nation the Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC) in all households on the Agatti and Minicoy islands.

Other projects launched by PM Modi include the solar power plant at Kavaratti, which is the first battery-backed solar power project in Lakshadweep. He also laid the foundation stone for the renovation of the primary healthcare facility in Kalpeni and the construction of five model Anganwadi centres (Nand Ghars) in the five islands of Androth, Chetlat, Kadmat, Agatti and Minicoy.

Iranians mark Gen. Soleimani’s 4th martyrdom anniversary in Kerman

Thousands of Iranians gather in the southern province of Kerman to pay tribute to top anti-terror commander Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani on his fourth martyrdom anniversary on January 3, 2024.

Thousands of Iranian people have flocked to the southeastern province of Kerman to pay homage to top anti-terror commander General Qassem Soleimani, who was assassinated along with a number of his companions in a 2020 US drone strike in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.

General Soleimani’s hometown and burial site hosted a deluge of the legendary commander’s lovers and followers from all walks of life and various social strata on Wednesday on his fourth martyrdom anniversary.

Kerman’s authorities said 1,300 distinguished experts and lecturers are to narrate the sacrifices of General Soleimani on the sidelines of his martyrdom anniversary, announcing the convention of 13 discussion forums as well as printing 1,000 volumes of books revolving around his character and school of thought.

The provincial officials also predicted a 30-percent increase in the number of pilgrims and visitors to General Soleimani’s burial site compared to last year.

General Soleimani, commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), and their companions were assassinated in a US drone strike authorized by then-US President Donald Trump near Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.

Both commanders were highly revered across the Middle East because of their key role in fighting the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group in the region, particularly in Iraq and Syria.

In less than a week after the attack, Iraqi lawmakers approved a bill that required the government to expel all US-led foreign forces from the country.

The IRGC also targeted the US-run Ain al-Asad base in Iraq’s western province of Anbar with a wave of missile attacks in retaliation for the assassination of General Soleimani.

MHA likely to notify three criminal laws before January 26

New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is all set to notify the three new criminal justice acts replacing colonial laws namely the IPC, the CrPC and the Evidence Act before January 26, official sources said.

The procedure to notify the three new laws– Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam– started soon after President Droupadi Murmu on December 25 gave her assent.

As per the sources, the MHA will start a training programme for police officers, investigators and those linked to forensic fields soon after the three laws are notified. The training aims to provide training to the policemen to ensure the implementation of these laws, and ensure fair, time-bound and evidence-based investigation and speedy trial.

For the training programme, the sources said, 3,000 officers from different fields will be appointed to train police officers, investigators and those in forensic departments, and this process will be called a “trainers-training” programme, the sources told the ANI on condition of anonymity.

“The training programme will cover almost 90 per cent of those needed to be trained within nine months to one year,” said the sources.

For the judiciary training, officials said, the MHA has already conducted consultations, and it will be done at Bhopal Academy.

Besides, the sources said, there would be a model set-up in Chandigarh to ensure a foolproof online mechanism as most of the records would be electronic or digital.

The Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been replaced with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the CrPC with Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Indian Evidence Act has been replaced with the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. The three laws were passed by the Parliament in the recently concluded Winter Session.

As per the new laws, generation and supply of records will be in electronic form like Zero FIR, E -FIR, Chargesheet, and victims will be provided information to the victim in digital form.

After the complete implementation of these laws, the victim will get justice within three years and the police officers will have to provide information through digital means within 90 days.

The focus will be on forensic evidence for which the sources said 900 FSL vans will be provided to all police districts to visit crime scenes and collect videography and forensic evidence mandatory in cases involving punishment of seven years or more than seven years.

Recording of evidence in an investigation, videography through electronic devices of the entire process of searching or seizing any property by the police, and statements of rape victims can be recorded through audio and video electronic means as per these Acts.

There is a major focus of Section 20 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita for the Directorate of Prosecution and it defines the eligibility, functions and powers of various authorities under it. The duties and responsibilities of different levels of prosecuting officers were laid down to ensure desired coordination.

The provision of supervision by the prosecutor has been introduced during the investigation phase.

The post of Directorate of Prosecution will be established on the district level and the criteria for appointment of Director of Prosecution and Assistant Director of Prosecution has been revised in Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.

Japan earthquake toll increases to 65 as aftershocks hinder rescue

Japan earthquake toll increases to 65 as aftershocks hinder rescue

Tokyo: The death toll from the a series of powerful earthquakes that struck the central Japanese prefecture of Ishikawa earlier this week, increased to 65 on Wednesday, with continued aftershocks and severe weather conditions hindering rescue work.

The worst-hit city of Wajima in Ishikawa has confirmed a total of 32 deaths, Xinhua news agency quoted Japan’s Kyodo News as saying citing local authorities.

In a series of aftershocks experienced by the region, one with a magnitude of 5.6 on Wednesday morning and one with a magnitude of 4.6 on Tuesday evening struck off the Noto Peninsula, both at shallow depths and measuring upper 5 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale which peaks at 7, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

The full extent of the quake remains unknown as rubble and severed roads still prevent search and rescue operations on Wednesday, two days after the 7.6-magnitude quake on Monday caused extensive structural damage and fires in Wajima.

According to the prefectural government, at least 60 people are now in a state of isolation due to cut-off roads in at least three municipalities, including the severely hit city of Nanao.

The National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management announced on Tuesday that they detected a significant uplift in the ground surface, reaching approximately four meters in the city of Wajima.

The JMA issued warnings of potential mudslides for Ishikawa prefecture with intermittent rain expected through Thursday in the disaster-hit areas, including some cut-off villages.

A heavy rain alert has been issued for the most-devastated city.

Ishikawa prefectural authorities have asked the central government to send Self-Defense Forces (SDF) personnel for disaster relief, and the forces were set to use helicopters to deliver supplies to cut-off areas, according to local media reports.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told a press conference on Wednesday that the government had decided to double the number of SDF members in the disaster-hit region from 1,000 at present.

A day after a tragic collision between a Japan Airlines plane and a Japan Coast Guard aircraft carrying relief goods at Tokyo’s Haneda airport, Kishida said the accident has no impact on disaster relief work and transportation of relief supplies to the areas has been progressing steadily.

A series of strong earthquakes, with a major one of 7.6 magnitude, on Monday struck at a shallow depth in the Noto region of Ishikawa prefecture.

The JMA has officially named it the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake.

Centered around 30 km east-northeast of Wajima, the devastating quake registered a maximum intensity of 7, which would make it impossible for people to stand.

The earthquake, categorised as a seismic swarm, had a length of up to 150 km in the epicentre area, leading to unprecedented scale and shaking intensity, said a JMA expert, noting that such a temblor was last recorded in 2018 in Hokkaido.

In the aftermath of the quake, nearly 34,000 households, as of Wednesday morning, still suffered power outages in Ishikawa prefecture, where over 33,000 people have taken shelter, according to local authorities.

Reports of damages and several cases of people being buried or trapped under collapsed homes in the quake-hit areas kept coming in, according to municipal authorities.

The JMA has lifted all tsunami advisories along the Sea of Japan following the quake, but weather officials warned that strong aftershocks may occur in the week, especially over the next two to three days.
