Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday praised India’s bowling attack against South Africa in the second Test match in Cape Town and said that if the visitors perform well with the bat then they will easily win the long-format game. Ganguly met the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Vishnu Deo Sai in Raipur after getting an invitation from him. While speaking to the press, Ganguly said that he was sad after the ‘Men in Blue’ lost the ODI World Cup 2023 final match against Australia after displaying a magnificent performance throughout the tournament.

He also pointed out India’s stellar performance in the second Test match against the Proteas.

“I am sad that we could not win the World Cup after playing such a good cricket, but we will win in the future. The team has got a lot of quality. Look how they dismissed South Africa at 55 in Cape Town. If they perform well with the bat then we will win the Test match easily. We have also won the ODI series against South Africa,” Ganguly said.

In the second Test match against South Africa, Mohammed Siraj’s six-wicket haul helped India to bundle the hosts at 55/10 in the first inning on day one.

He added that “it was nice” meeting the CM for the first time. The former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president also praised the cricket facilities of the new stadium in Raipur. He also asked the CM Vishnu Deo to promote cricket in the state.

“I was happy to meet the CM Vishnu Deo Sai, and this was the first time we met so it was nice. When I was the President of the BCCI, India played against New Zealand over here in Chhattisgarh. It’s a new stadium and also a new state for the Ranji Trophy. The facilities are also good here. I have also asked the CM to promote cricket in the state. This was the first time I met CM and I did not expect that I would get an invitation from him,” he added.

When asked about the upcoming T20 World Cup, he said that the best team would be picked and hoped that the ‘Men in Blue’ would perform well in the tournament.

“Still a lot of time left for the T20 World Cup. India has many good players and hopefully, the best team will be selected and we will perform well in the tournament,” he added.

Congress leaders from erstwhile Medak lobby for nominated posts

Sangareddy: With Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy preparing to fill nominated posts, several Congress leaders are lobbying to grab the opportunity.

Over 60 nominated posts are up for grabs at the State level, apart from several posts at the district level, constituency, divisional and mandal levels. Candidates who tried for assembly seats but were denied the same, are among the serious contenders for the posts. With several senior leaders like Gali Anil Kumar, Kantareddy Tirupathi Reddy, Myadam Balakrishna and other leaders quitting the party to join Bharat Rashtra Samithi ahead of the assembly elections, things are a bit easier for the contenders.

Congress working president T Jagga Reddy is learned to be lobbying for a post for his wife. Meanwhile, MA Faheem, who contested on a Praja Rajyam Party ticket in 2009 in a losing cause against Jagga Reddy and later joined the Congress, is also a frontrunner for a corporation post.

In Medak constituency, senior Congress leader from Ramayampet, Suprabath Rao, is also said to be in consideration for a corporation post. In Patancheru constituency, Minister Damodara Raja Narasimha’s close associate Kata Srinivas Goud, who also lost the election, is said to be aspiring for a post.

Former Gajlwel MLA Tumukunta Narsa Reddy, who contested and lost against former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao in the recent assembly elections, A Chandrashekhar, who lost the election in Zaheerabad and Pujala Harikrishan, who lost in Siddipet, were also aspiring for the posts.

However, Siddipet Congress leader Daripally Chandram is also expected to get a post. With Andole constituency already having a Minister in the form of Damodara Raja Narasimha, no one is expected to get another State-level post from here. However, his followers are likely to get a good number of district-level posts. In Narsapur constituency, Anjaneyulu is a frontrunner for a district-level post.

Japan earthquake: Rescuers race against time in search for survivors

Japan earthquake: Rescuers race against time in search for survivors

Suzu: Japanese rescue workers and canine units searched urgently through rubble on Wednesday ahead of predicted bitter cold and heavy rain in what the prime minister called a race against time after powerful earthquakes killed at least 73 people in western Japan.

Fifteen people were listed as officially missing and possibly trapped under collapsed buildings.

Ishikawa prefecture and nearby areas were shaken by more aftershocks on Wednesday, adding to the dozens that followed Monday’s magnitude 7.6 temblor centred near Noto, about 300 kilometres from Tokyo on the opposite coast. The quake set off tsunami warnings, followed by waves measuring more than 1 metre in some places.

The first 72 hours are especially critical for rescues, experts say, because the prospects for survival greatly diminish after that.

“More than 40 hours have passed. This is a race against time, and I feel that we are at a critical moment,” Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters. “We have received reports many people are still waiting for rescue under collapsed buildings.” The narrow Noto Peninsula has added to the challenges in reaching some communities. Water, power and cellphone service were still down in some areas.

Naomi Gonno says she and her children got out of their house just as it came crashing down.

But her children were screaming “Granma,” and Gonno saw that her mother was trapped under the smashed house, with only her hand visible. She was able to squeeze her way out through a tiny space, Gonno said.

“I can’t believe we’re still alive,” she said. “We are living in fear.” Relief officials handed out water, blankets, food and other supplies. Search dogs joined military personnel and firefighters trying to find missing people, although the exact number is unclear.

Weather forecasts warned of heavy rain in Ishikawa, leading to worries about landslides and further damage to half-crumbled homes. Temperatures were expected to drop to around 4 degrees Celsius (39 degrees Fahrenheit) overnight.

Of the deaths, 39 were counted in Wajima city, while 23 people died in Suzu, according to Ishikawa prefectural authorities. The other deaths were reported in five neighbouring towns.

More than 300 people have been injured, at least 25 of them seriously.

Ishikawa Gov. Hiroshi Hase encouraged everyone to use masks, antiseptic and soap to guard against the spread of infectious diseases as evacuees shelter together. Ensuring adequate water supplies and toilets for those who were displaced is a priority, he said.

Nearly 33,000 people are staying at evacuation centres, and some said they were hungry and cold, unable to sleep and afraid.

When Monday’s quake hit, Yasuo Kobatake ran out of his house with just one sock on. The shaking threw him to the ground, and a concrete wall came crashing down, barely missing him, he said.

He was eating only rice balls and a few sips of water in paper cups at the elementary school where he and others have been sheltering. They slept on cushions, with no blankets.

“It was so cold. I thought I’d freeze to death,” he said.

In the aftermath of the quakes and tsunami, boats lay overturned in the sea, roads were blocked by mounds of dirt, and pillars and walls lay scattered from flattened homes. A large fire turned an entire section of Wajima city into ashes.

Officials warned that more major quakes could follow.

Japan is prone to earthquakes, with many fault lines and volcanoes. A massive quake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in 2011 caused widespread damage in northeastern Japan.

No major problems were reported at nuclear plants after Monday’s quake. The Shika nuclear plant in Ishikawa suffered a partial electricity failure, but backup power kicked in, ensuring the critical cooling process continued.

Japan is an organised, conformist and relatively crime-free society where warnings are systematically relayed as a public service. Disaster experts say that’s helping save lives.

Takako Izumi, a disaster science professor at Tohoku University, said time is needed to figure out logistics because roads are often blocked after an earthquake, and large trucks can’t get through to deliver aid.

If land routes aren’t accessible, aid may have to be dropped from the sky or brought in by boat. The winter cold adds to health risks, and some people may still have not reached an evacuation centre, she added.

“We need to accurately assess the damage first. And then a proper response can come, and what’s needed can reach the right places,” Izumi said.

Nasrallah calls Hamas leader’s assassination 'blatant Israeli attack'

Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah delivers a speech on the 4th anniversary of the assassination of General Qaseem Soleimani, on January 3, 2024.

The secretary general of the Lebanese Hezbollah resistance movement says the assassination of a senior leader of the Palestinian resistance group Hamas in the Lebanese capital of Beirut was an attack by the Israeli regime.

In a televised speech delivered on Wednesday, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah offered his condolences on the martyrdom of the deputy head of Hamas politburo, Saleh al-Arouri, and five of his comrades who were killed a day earlier in a drone strike on their office in southern Beirut.

Nasrallah called Arouri “a brother” and “a grand commander” and said his assassination on the Lebanese soil was “a blatant attack” by the Zionist regime.

I bowled in one area which I didn’t in Centurion: Siraj

I bowled in one area which I didn’t in Centurion: Siraj

Cape Town: Mohammed Siraj is delighted to have started the 2024 with career-best figures in Test cricket but after day one of the second Test, the India pacer was more pleased about rectifying the mistakes he committed during the series opener against South Africa.

Siraj had figures of 2/91 in South Africa’s only innings in the opening Test but returned with six for 15 from nine overs to bundle out the hosts for 55 in first innings as 23 wickets fell on day one.

Did he think he will come out to bowl twice in a day? “Did you think so?” he chuckled with a counter question. “We didn’t think also. We had put our feet up but this is cricket. You see both good and bad things,” he added philosophically.

But he was visibly happy after having one of his best days in his 23 Test career. “You want the New Year to go well,” the affable Hyderabadi said with satisfaction written all over his face.

“I realised what I missed in the last game and wanted to compensate and I executed my plans accordingly. I wanted to hit one area consistently and I did that and got reward for it. Wicket looks quite similar to Centurion,” Siraj said at the end of the day’s play.

So what did he do different that he didn’t in the last game? “We (him and Jasprit Bumrah) bowled in partnerships and bowled many maidens unlike last Test match. Bowling so many maidens did create pressure.”

When one gets a track as spicy as Newlands, a fast bowler’s excited mind can get cluttered and that’s what one needs to control, feels Siraj.

“On these wickets, where ball is doing so much, often bowlers tend to think, ‘let me try and bowl an outswinger darting from leg to off or get one to bend back from angle but one should just stick to one line. “If you hit areas, wickets will come automatically, if you try many things, you yourself can get confused,” he observed.

He thanked Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul for constant communication. “When senior bowler is operating and there is wicketkeeper who advises you on what is the correct length, job becomes easier as there is lot of communication. When you are hit for 4-5 boundaries, you know what length to switch to.”

So what’s an ideal score that can be chased? “I can’t predict what will happen on second day. We have to get them out for as less as possible and we don’t need to think too far as we are still 40 runs ahead and we have to see how many we can get before they take lead,” he signed off.

Reservation for men likely in TSRTC buses

The RTC is considering different options, including introducing reservations for men in buses, allotment of seats for elderly and students, and special buses for men, if possible.

Reservation for men likely in TSRTC buses

Hyderabad: In what could be swapped roles, men travelling in TSRTC buses could soon find seats reserved for them or even ‘Men’s Special’ services being operated! Given the response to free bus travel for women under the Maha Lakshmi scheme, which has buses registering a 20 per cent rise in occupancy rate, the TSRTC is apparently forced to consider options to cater to male passengers.

Amid the sharp rise in the number of women using the buses to commute, there have been frequent instances of men, the elderly and students facing difficulty in getting a seat. In this context, the RTC is considering different options, including introducing reservations for men in buses, allotment of seats for elderly and students, and special buses for men, if possible.

As a majority of the buses are full of women, men are reportedly choosing private vehicles to RTC buses. It is learnt that the developments were brought to the attention of the corporation’s Managing Director, VC Sajjanar, by senior officials and bus conductors. In this context, the RTC has focused on the necessary routes and running special buses for men at special times.

Apart from this, it is also working on the allotment of seats for men and especially for the elderly. It is also planning on plying buses on alternative routes or special services to women. Discussions are under way to provide some special services to students and also bring in some kind of reservation in buses to fairly accommodate men as well, an official said. “As far as special buses for men is concerned, it could be not possible right given our fleet limitations,” the official said.

Occupancy in the buses has increased with the implementation of the free travel scheme for women. According to estimates, the ratio of women passengers has gone up from 69 per cent to 89 per cent. Earlier, 12 lakh to 14 lakh women passengers used to travel in RTC buses every day and the numbers have risen to 30 lakh.
