Around 500 Climbers, Including 4 Indians, Conquered Mt Everest in 2023

The activity at Mount Everest is continuing despite rising temperatures and melting glaciers.

Kathmandu:

Despite concerns about rising temperatures, melting glaciers and snow and increasing extreme weather events, the mountaineering community celebrated the 70th anniversary of scaling Mount Everest with around 500 climbers, including four Indians, making it to the summit in 2023.

Ever since New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Nepal’s Sherpa Tenzing Norgay summited the 8,848.86 metres (29,032 feet) high Mt Everest, a.k.a. Sagarmatha in Nepali, on May 29, 1953, thousands of climbers from across the globe, including India and Nepal, have been attracted to the highest peak in the world, scores of them reached the summit while many lost their lives.

Official data showed that since 1953’s Hillary-Norgay summit, around 7,000 mountaineers have successfully scaled Mt Everest while over 300 have lost their lives.

The year 2023 was no exception. A total of 478 climbers, including 103 females, summited Everest in the Spring of 2023, the only narrow window available to climb the extremely high altitudes.

Four Indian nationals stood atop Mt Everest and one died in the high mountains this year. Yashi Jain, Mithil Raju, Sunil Kumar and Pinkhi Haris Chhed successfully scaled the highest peak in the world on May 17.

Suzanne Leopoldina Jesus, an Indian mountaineer with a pacemaker, died near the Everest Base Camp while attempting to climb the peak on May 18.

Officials said 11 climbers, including four Nepalese, one Indian and one Chinese, died while eight went missing during their respective expeditions to Mt Everest.

Nepal’s Kami Rita Sherpa, 53, set a new world record of climbing Mt Everest 28 times with two summits this season on May 17 and May 23. Kami Rita’s record till 2022 was equalled by compatriot, Sherpa Pasang Dawa, 46, who made it to the highest peak for the 26th time this year on May 14 and the 27th time on May 17.

But it is not just the Sherpa community that continued to break records and test human endurance in the rarified air of the high-altitude Himalayas in Nepal.

Hari Budhamagar, 43, a double amputee ex-British Gurkha soldier scaled Mt Everest, scripted history by becoming the first in the category to scale the world’s highest peak with artificial legs, on May 19.

On the same day, May 19, Shrinivas Sainis Dattatraya, 39, an Indian-origin Singaporean climber went missing while returning from the summit of Mount Everest.

No expedition in the high-altitude Himalayas is complete without the help of the Sherpa community that lives around the foothills of the snow-clad mountains. That also makes them the most vulnerable in the dangerous treks to the world’s highest mountain region.

Three Nepalese Sherpa guides – Themwa Tenzing Sherpa, Lakpa Rita Sherpa and Badure Sherpa – went missing on April 12 after a massive ice sheet of more than 50 metres tumbled down the mountain and buried them deep under five to six metres of snow on the most dangerous section of Mt Everest amidst an avalanche, making it the season’s first accident at the world’s tallest peak.

Nepal granted a record 466 climbing permits, including 40 from India, for Mt Everest this spring, from climbers from 65 different countries. This broke the previous record of 2021, which was 409. In 2022, the number was 323.

Mountaineering is a good revenue stream for the tiny Himalayan nation of Nepal with a large mountain community dependent on mountaineering and related tourism in the region.

And, therefore, the depleting glaciers, rising temperatures and increasing extreme rainfall events are a cause of worry for the large number of people whose livelihoods are at stake in the changing climate.

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) pointed out how 79 glaciers surrounding Everest have thinned by over 100 metres in just six decades, and the thinning rate has nearly doubled since 2009.

Coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the Mt Everest summit, ICIMOD, supported by mountain institutes globally, including the Nepal Mountaineering Association, called on the governments to make good on their commitments to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees as part of the #SaveOurSnow campaign.

Centre plans to bring electricity under GST

Centre plans to bring electricity under GST

Hyderabad: The union Government is reportedly making efforts to bring electricity within the goods and services tax (GST) framework. The Centre is planning to introduce GST in place of Electricity Duty (ED) collected by the State Governments and trying to get a share of it. Electricity is one of several commodities like petrol, diesel and natural gas that have so far remained out of the purview of GST.

It is learnt that most of the States opposed the move in a meeting held to elicit their views recently. The States fear that they might lose out on receivable electricity duties if it was brought under the GST.

The Power Ministry is reportedly looking at its likely impact on the industry, States’ revenue and household electricity bills. It is learnt that Audit and consulting firm Deloitte, which was appointed to analyze the impact of the move, submitted a report to the Power Ministry that showed the move would benefit industry by lowering its outgo in levies.

According to State Energy Department officials, the move was expected to benefit coal-based power plants as they would be able to use the credit for the taxes paid on various inputs and services they procure, to meet their final GST. The GST could potentially drive down electricity costs for businesses due to the possibility of claiming their input tax credits, the officials added.

At present, power utilities pay GST on various capital goods and raw materials they purchase, which get built into the price of the electricity they sell, rather than GST being collected separately from power buyers in the form of a tax that is passed on to the ultimate consumer.

Supply of electricity is exempted under GST as per the Notification 02/2017 (Central Tax). Further, services provided by an electricity transmission or distribution utility (state electricity board) by way of transmission or distribution of electricity is exempted under GST as per the Notification 12/2017 under heading 9969. Accordingly, if any person other than electricity transmission or distribution utility supplies electricity, it will attract GST at the rate of 18 percent..

Before GST, electricity supply was exempted under the respective State’s VAT Acts. Also, services provided by an electricity transmission or distribution utility by transmission or distribution of electricity were exempted under the Service Tax Act.

Dumb bombs dropped on Gaza

A US intelligence assessment has laid bare Israel’s indiscriminate bombing of the besieged Gaza Strip, revealing that nearly half the regime’s air-to-surface munitions dropped on Gaza in the past few months, were unguided bombs.

The assessment was conducted by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and has been reported by news outlet CNN.

These bombs are known as dumb bombs since they are typically less precise and pose a greater threat to civilians.

According to assessments, about 40 to 45 percent of the 29,000 air-to-ground munitions Israel has used have been unguided.

This means that the Israeli military has used more than 13,000 so-called dumb bombs in its devastating airstrikes on the coastal territory, turning it into a virtual graveyard.

Gaza, let’s remember is one of the world’s most densely populated areas.

Before the war started, more than 2 million people were cramped into a strip that was smaller than Mobile, Alabama, meaning that Gaza actually has a bigger population density than Chicago or DC.

And so what we’ve seen here with the dropping of enormous numbers of dumb bombs, as they are called, this really constitutes a war crime.

Alan Macleod, Mintpress News

Unguided bombs are more than likely to fall wide of the intended target and pose a significant threat to the civilian population, especially the vulnerable.

The weapons lack any internal guidance systems or kits to improve their aim and generally follow the trajectory at which they are dropped.

The US has itself been providing the regime with unguided munitions, including five thousand Mk82 bombs.

Under international law, weapons are considered indiscriminate if they are not directed at military targets, and instead, target civilian sites, which is exactly what has been happening in Gaza.

But what they’re really trying to do there is just distance themselves from Israeli destruction. Where are these bombs coming from, I think we have to ask ourselves?

The vast majority of Israeli international arms purchases come from the United States, and the Biden administration has just been rubber stamping a $14.5 billion arms deal to Israel, and that’s aid not even selling, so they’re not even making a profit on this.

They are giving the Israelis the weapons that they are using to carpet bomb Gaza.

Alan Macleod, Mintpress News

Indiscriminate bombing is a violation of the Geneva Conventions and is widely regarded as a war crime. Experts have called it pure terrorism.

The revelation comes amid Israeli claims that its army is committed to international law and a moral code of conduct to minimize harm to civilians.

Experts, however, argue that the use of such munitions by the regime undercuts such claims. Israel has dropped over 29,000 bombs on the densely populated coastal strip since the onslaught began on October the seventh.

This is just a form of genocide; Israeli officials are very clear that they want to drive out Palestinians, they’re trying to ethnically cleanse, and this has nothing to do with October 7th anymore.

This has to do with the fact that the Zionist government wants to take over more land, and drive out more Palestinians, and that’s been what the Zionist movement has been doing for 75 years.

Obviously at each stage, it’s a little bit different how it works out, In this case, what we’re seeing is the worst level of slaughter.

Yves Engler, Author and Political Activist

Israel’s indiscriminate bombing of Gaza has killed over 20,000 Palestinians and injured more than 50,000 others, the majority of whom were women and children.

Thousands more are missing and believed to be trapped under the rubble. One of the objectives of using unguided bombs is to turn the civilian population of Gaza against the Hamas resistance movement.

However, an opinion poll taken in Palestine shows a rise in support for Hamas, which appears to have ticked up even in the devastated Gaza Strip.

Any arrangement in Gaza or in the Palestinian cause without Hamas or the resistance factions is a delusion and a Mirage, a delusion and a mirage.

Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas Political Chief

The poll found that 72 percent of respondents believed Hamas was correct to launch the October 7 retaliatory attack. Hamas says the Palestinian resistance remains firm in its battle against the Israeli military.

Although tens of thousands of Gazans have been killed or wounded in the Israeli onslaught., they have put up a stiff resistance against the invaders.

As for the Palestinian resistance, it is standing, hitting hard and inflicting significant losses, whether in the Israeli invading vehicles or troops, at the same time, we are saddened by what we all witnessed, of suffering of our people as a result of the Israeli genocide war, which targets indiscriminately all areas across Gaza.

Ghazi Hamad, Senior Hamas Official

Hamas asserts it will not bow down to the pressure by Israel and the United States. Israel has had no significant battlefield achievements so far, and its forces have resorted to a propaganda campaign, such as arresting civilians in schools, claiming they are prisoners from Hamas.

The resistance movement will not be eliminated and is capable of defeating the occupation forces.

New Delhi:

A cab driver was stabbed to death allegedly by three people, including a minor, after he did not give them way to pass in a traffic jam in south Delhi’s Mehrauli area, police said on Friday.

All the three accused have been identified and the minor has been apprehended, they said.

“Manoj Kumar (34) worked as a cab driver for a Gurugram-based BPO. On Thursday evening, he picked up five BPO employees from the Malviya Nagar area and then one from Mehrauli. Later, the cab got stuck in a traffic jam in Mehrauli,” a senior police officer said.

“Around 8:40 pm, three boys on a scooter came from behind and started honking at Kumar, asking for space to move ahead. The cab driver was unable to make way for them as there was no room.

“Soon, a verbal spat ensued between the two sides. One of the scooter riders stabbed Kumar in the chest with a knife before fleeing from the spot with his accomplices,” the police officer.

Kumar was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival, police said.

A case of murder has been registered in the matter, they said.

“The minor has been apprehended. The remaining accused have been identified and will be arrested soon,” said the officer.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, police said.

Protesters in Tel Aviv call for end of war in Gaza

Palestine’s Sama News reported that the protesters urged the need for an end to the Zionist aggressions and more efforts to secure the release of the Zionist prisoners in Gaza.

They chanted slogans like “war is enough” and “until the establishment of peace, there will be no security neither here nor there (in Gaza)”.

The Zionist invasion of Gaza has thus far killed more than 20,000 of innocent people, including women and children.

New Delhi:

The Aam Aadmi Party has denied reports that Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has turned down the party’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal’s request to appoint Raghav Chadha as the party’s interim leader in the upper house of parliament.

Earlier this month, Mr Kejriwal had asked Mr Dhankhar to appoint Mr Chadha as the interim leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Rajya Sabha as floor leader Sanjay Singh was in judicial custody.

According to sources, Dhankhar in a letter to Kejriwal said, “This aspect is subject to ‘The Leaders and Chief Whips of Recognised Parties and Groups in Parliament (Facilities) Act. 1998’ and the Rules made thereunder. The request, not being in conformity to applicable legal regime, is not being acceded to.”

AAP sources, however, told news agency PTI the request (to appoint Raghav Chadha as the party’s leader in the Rajya Sabha) has not been declined. “Some corrections were sought which will be addressed,” AAP sources told PTI.

Hezbollah launches fresh strikes on Israeli targets

Lebanon’s Hezbollah resistance movement has launched fresh strikes on Israeli targets across the occupied territories in support of Palestinians who are subjected to Israeli atrocities.

Israeli media reports said Hezbollah fired anti-tank missiles at the Dolev settlement on Friday, as the Israeli regime keeps bombarding the besieged Gaza Strip.

Hezbollah also said its fighters targeted Hadab Yaron with appropriate weapons, hitting it directly.

Israel launched the war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas waged the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the occupying entity in response to the Israeli regime’s decades-long campaign of bloodletting and devastation against Palestinians.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed at least 21,320 Palestinians and injured more than 55,603 others.

Thousands more are also missing and presumed dead under the rubble in Gaza, which is under “complete siege” by Israel.

A day after the regime started its genocidal war on Gaza, Hezbollah and the Israeli regime have been exchanging sporadic fire.

More than 150 people have been killed on the Lebanese side of the border between Lebanon and the occupied territories since then, mostly Hezbollah fighters and more than 20 civilians, according to an AFP tally.

Israel says at least nine of its soldiers and four settlers have been killed in the exchange of fire.

KL Rahul's Reaction To Gavaskar's 'Top 10 Hundred' Compliment Is Pure Gold

KL Rahul in action against South Africa© AFP

KL Rahul impressed everyone by scoring a gritty century on Day 2 of the first Test match between India and South Africa in Centurion. With wickets falling on the other end, Rahul paced his innings to perfection and ended up taking India to a competitive total in the first innings. Legendary India skipper Sunil Gavaskar was all praise for Rahul and even called the century among “Top 10 in the Indian history of Tests. “Watching cricket for 50 years, I can surely Say this hundred by Rahul is in the Top 10 in the Indian history of Tests,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

At the post-match press conference, Rahul was told by reporters about Gavaskar’s compliment and his reaction was pure gold. The wicket-keeper batter was left amazed by the legendary cricketer’s compliment and said that he was humbled by his words.

“Firstly, I am very humbled if he has made that comment. It’s a pretty huge compliment to get. I think batting in the middle-order. What I have realized is that you can’t really plan your innings that much. When you walk in there, there is a situation in front of you. The game tells you what you need to do and how you need to play. I walk in with a very empty mindset when I bat in the middle-order, and then I react according to the situation. Today and yesterday, I knew i was going to bat with the tail, so I had to take my chances and I am glad it came off,” Rahul told the reporters.

Dean Elgar, on the eve of retirement, and new cap David Bedingham took South Africa into the lead on the second day of the first Test against India at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Wednesday.

Elgar made a boundary-studded 140 not out and Bedingham an assured 56 as South Africa reached 256 for five – a lead of 11 runs – when bad light stopped play.

Two late wickets kept India in the game, especially as there was no sign that South African captain Temba Bavuma would bat after suffering a hamstring strain on the first day.
