Processions now allowed to bring in elephants from different states

To begin with, the temple trusts and other organizations planning to conduct processions have to obtain permission from the police department.

Hyderabad: Elephants are the cynosure of all eyes during different religious processions held in the city. But do you know that temple trusts and individuals organizing different festivities have to make jumbo efforts to get elephants from other States for conducting such processions?

To begin with, the temple trusts and other organizations planning to conduct processions have to obtain permission from the police department. After obtaining permissions from police, the trusts or individuals have to approach temples, mutts and private individuals, who own elephants in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and other States.

This will be followed with an approval from the Chief Wildlife Warden of the respective State for issuing a No Objection Certificate for permitting entry of elephants into Telangana. A veterinary officer should also certify about the health of the elephant and its fitness to travel by road to Telangana, said a senior official from the Forest department.

In addition to these permissions, organizations have to pay Rs.25,000 towards fee to the department. This includes veterinary officer’s fee, vehicle, tranquilizer shots and other expenditure. This team will follow the elephant all along the procession route to ensure there was no mishap, the official said.

This has been a regular practice and with Forest Minister Konda Surekha on December 17 signing the file to permit organizations for getting elephants from other States to Telangana. there are hopes that the situation might change and make affairs easy to get elephants here. However, there is no clarity on whether the cumbersome process of getting multiple approvals will be made easier or not.

Every year, elephants are included in the Bonalu, Muharram, Ayyappa puja festivities processions in the city. Temple trusts and organizations used to approach the Nehru Zoological Park used to permit Rajini – the elephant, which was experienced in participating in processions. However, since last few years, the officials are not permitting use of zoo elephants for processions, citing court orders.

Since then organizations are facing major challenges for getting elephants for conducting processions. Earlier, this year, Madhuri, an elephant from Kolhapur, Maharashtra was brought by the organizers to carry the Bibi –ka-Alam in a procession from Bibi-ka-Alawa to Masjid-e Ilahi grounds Chaderghat, covering a distance of around seven kilometres. The Telangana State Wakf Board sanctioned a budget of around Rs.4 lakh towards the rent, transportation and accommodation of the elephant, according to reports.

"Lost 16 In A Row": Iceland Cricket's Jibe At Pakistan, Hafeez Goes Viral

Iceland Cricket has taken a jibe at Mohammad Hafeez after the Pakistan cricket team director claimed that “inconsistent umpiring and technology curse” cost them the second Test match against Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday. “We made some mistakes as a team, we will take that, we will address those things, but at the same time I believe inconsistent umpiring and technology curse (has) really given us the result which should have been different,” said Hafeez in the post-match press conference.

Reacting to Hafeez’s comments, Iceland Cricket wrote, “It’s amazing. How can the more talented and superior team have lost 16 matches in a row in Australia? Surely those lucky Aussies will stop being lucky soon.”

Pakistan needed 98 runs with 5 wickets in hand in the chase of 317 when Mohammad Rizwan was caught behind. The ball hit the wristband of Rizwan’s glove and Alex Carey took the catch behind the stumps.

Ground umpire Michael Gough was unconvinced with the appeal but Australia decided to go upstairs. During the DRS review, third umpire Richard Illingworth felt there was conclusive evidence through Hotspot and Real-Time Snicko to decide that the ball had brushed Rizwan’s wristband. Hence, the decision of the ground umpire was overturned and Rizwan was adjudged out.

Including the dismissal of Rizwan, Pakistan lost their last five wickets for 18 runs, suffering a disappointing defeat.

“I feel like these are the areas that need to be addressed. I spoke to (Rizwan) and he’s a very honest person. He said he did not even feel that it touched anywhere near the gloves. And what we saw, there should be conclusive evidence to reverse the decision of the umpire. That’s what I know. The umpire gave it not out and there was no conclusive kind of evidence where the decision has to be turned over,” Hafeez had said.

“Technology, I’m in favor of that, but (only) if it’s giving you benefit. But if it’s bringing some doubts and bringing some curse into the game, it should not be accepted by anyone. I think technology is something that is taking away from the instinct of the game,” the team director had added.

Iran: Israel’s chain of defeats made it assassinate IRGC commander

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says Israel assassinated a senior military advisor of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) in Syria due to its defeat in a host of political, military and security fronts.

Amir-Abdollahian said assassinating Brigadier General Seyyed Razi Mousavi, who was serving as a military advisor in Syria, was out of the regime’s anger and desperation with its own defeats.

Mousavi was martyred in a terrorist Israeli airstrike in a Damascus neighborhood on December 27. He was a comrade of top Iranian anti-terror commander Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, who was also assassinated in a US drone strike in Iraq in January 2020.

Amir-Abdollahian said the slain IRGC commander has made great efforts to bring regional security in the face of terrorism and the Israeli regime’s crimes in West Asia.

The top Iranian diplomat emphasized that Mousavi’s assassination would never weaken the Islamic Republic’s steadfastness in maintaining security in the region but would strengthen the country’s resolve in this regard.

He said Israel has suffered two defeats in a course of over 80 days.

“The first defeat was on October 7 when Israel collapsed in political and security terms in every sense of the word.”

The minister was referring to the launch of Operation Al-Aqsa Storm by the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas against Israel.

And the second defeat, the foreign minister said, has been inflicted on the regime over the past 80 days in military terms after it faced resistance of the Palestinian people in Gaza.

Israel has killed more than 21,600 people, mostly women and children, in Gaza since that October day. Over 56,100 people have also been injured.

The regime, however, has stopped short of realizing any of its stated goals, including obliteration of the Gaza-based Hamas, enabling release of the people who were taken captive during Al-Aqsa Storm, and prompting forced displacement of Gaza’s population to neighboring countries.

India Star Suffers Nasty Collision With Teammate, Taken To Hospital

Harleen Deol was on Saturday named as a concussion substitute for India Women’s spinner Sneh Rana during the second innings of their second ODI against Australia in Mumbai. While fielding at backward point, Rana was involved in a nasty collision with Pooja Vastrakar who was placed at short third in the 25th over of the first innings when they both went to collect a cut off Australia batter Beth Mooney‘s bat.

Vastrakar and Rana both winced in pain but the former got back on her feet sooner than her teammate.

Rana remained on the ground for a longer duration, post which she left the field with an ice pack on her head.

“Sneh Rana complained of headache after a collision while fielding during the second ODI against Australia. She has been taken for scans and she will not take any further part in the ongoing ODI,” the BCCI said in a statement.

“Harleen Deol has been named as a concussion substitute,” the board added.

Rana had bowled four overs in the Australian innings before the collision with Vastrakar, as she returned to the field and completed her 10-over spell with a solitary success in the form of Ashleigh Gardner, while giving away a total of 59 runs.

Off-spinner Deepti Sharma stymied Australia’s surge with a stellar five-wicket haul but seven dropped catches by India allowed them to post a challenging 258 for eight in the second Women’s ODI on Saturday.

Deepti exploited a dry and turning surface to a fine degree to return with figures off five for 38, but her hard work was undone by the hosts’ horrendous fielding.

She accounted for Ellyse Perry (50), Beth Mooney (10), Tahlia McGrath (24), Georgia Wareham (22) and Annabel Sutherland (23) for her career’s second five-for.

Alana King, who was dropped once each by Deepti and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, hammered three sixes to make an unbeaten 28 (17 balls) in a late surge to take Australia past the 250-run mark, which at one stage looked beyond the visitors.

Australia looked in complete command until the 22nd over, powering to 117 for one through a 77-run stand for the second wicket between Perry and Phoebe Litchfield (63, 98 balls, 6x4s).

But fortune swung in India’s favour when Deepti was introduced, and the senior spinner made an immediate impact.

Perry (50, 47 balls, 4x4s, 1x6s) raced to her second fifty in a row and posed India a serious threat during a strong partnership with Litchfield, but Deepti got rid of the former to start her demolition job.

In an attempt to pull a short delivery from Deepti over midwicket, Perry could not clear debutant Shreyanka Patil who completed the catch on her second attempt.

Deepti troubled Mooney consistently, using the roughness of the pitch to full effect by generating sharp away turn.

To counter the turn, Mooney swept from outside the line of the ball but was beaten by a straight one, getting trapped leg-before.

Deepti later cleaned up the dangerous McGrath in the 40th over for her third wicket, and then added Wareham on the first ball of the 46th over. She took a return catch off to get rid of Sutherland to complete the five-wicket haul.

In between, Sneh Rana, who had to leave the field following a nasty collision with Pooja Vastrakar, had Ashleigh Gardner (2) caught at long on for her only wicket.

But Deepti’s exploits notwithstanding, India were simply poor in the field. Litchfield was dropped when she was yet to open her account by Amanjot Kaur in the second over and then on 10 by Yastika Bhatia at first slip.

Rana dropped Perry in the 17th over when she was on 30 on her own bowling.

Smriti Mandhana spilled a regulation chance in the 44th over when Sutherland was on one off Deepti.

India also made an error of judgment when they did not take a DRS call against Alyssa Healy who was pinned in front of the wickets by Vastrakar.

Vastrakar eventually sent back Healy when she cleaned up the Australian captain for 13 in the 10th over.

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday released 12 reference books related to the recently enacted criminal justice laws and said the books have lucidly brought out changes made in the laws in a concise and simple manner.

Hailing the publishers for the reference books on the three laws, Shah said the books also give case law commentaries for easy understanding.

The three new laws — the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Act — got Parliament’s approval last week and the president gave her assent on December 25.

The laws will replace the colonial era Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872 respectively.

“I congratulate Mohan Law House for publishing the reference books related to the newly promulgated revolutionary criminal justice laws in a record short time,” Shah wrote on ‘X’.

He said these law books contain user-friendly comparative references for easy understanding of various provisions and also highlight changes brought in the new laws.

The home minister said heinous crimes against women such as rape was covered under Section 375 of the IPC but is now in Section 63 of the new law. A grave crime like murder was under Section 300 of the IPC but is now covered under Section 101 in the new law.

“I thank Dr Vinay Ahuja, the Managing Director of the publishing house. Glad to launch the books today for the benefit of our law enthusiasts and luminaries,” he said.

In another post, Shah congratulated Udit Mathur, the Managing Director and Shri Mahender Chaturvedi, the Sales Director of the publishing company Lexis Nexis for promptly releasing the books and said the newly published books will enhance the effective understanding of the laws.

“Pleased to launch the reference books on the recently passed three groundbreaking criminal justice laws. These three law books have highlighted all changes made in the new laws in a very simple manner for the benefit of all the stakeholders,” he said.

In another post, the home minister expressed heartfelt thanks to Eastern Book Company Director Surendra Malik and Senior Associate Editor Bhumika Indulia for swiftly coming up with the books.

“Introducing the reference books on the three recently enacted transformative criminal justice laws. The three books published by Eastern Book Company have given useful section-wise comparisons of new laws with the old ones,” he said.

He said the books highlight the vision of the government for a fair and speedy justice delivery system.

In yet another post, Shah congratulated Piyush Kumar, the CEO of the Taxmann Publication for publishing the reference books related to the newly made three “visionary criminal justice system laws in a record time”.

“These three books have lucidly brought out changes made in the laws in a concise and simple manner. The books also give case law commentaries for easy understanding. Delighted to release the books today,” he said.
