CM Revanth Reddy stresses on tech to make youth competent

Hyderabad: Stressing on the need for providing modern technology to youth in making them compete at global level, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy directed officials to introduce advanced courses in government ITIs across the State.

The State government was determined to provide employment and entrepreneurship opportunities to youth, he said.

The Chief Minister, who held a meeting with representatives from Tata Technologies Limited and senior officials from different departments here on Saturday, suggested to the Tata company representatives and officials to introduce courses that facilitate youth to emerge as entrepreneurs immediately after completing the technical courses by setting up their own industries and providing employment to others.

“Youth should not waste their time in pursuing outdated courses and steps should be taken to train them in advanced courses. The State government will extend all support in this regard,” Revanth Reddy said.

Towards this, he welcomed the Tata Technologies initiative to provide employment-based industrial training for youth in 50 government ITIs across the State with a cost of Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 crore. The Tata Company will provide required machinery, equipment and software for establishment of 4.0 Skilling Centres along with maintenance in the State.

Watch: Poisonous Snake Stops Thiem's Match In Brisbane. This Happens Next

Dominic Thiem’s Brisbane International qualifying match against Australian James McCabe was suspended for 40 minutes on Saturday after a poisonous snake slithered courtside. McCabe had just wrapped up the first set 6-2 against the Austrian 2020 US Open champion when the reptile — reportedly an eastern brown snake — was spotted among electrical wires on the side of the court in front of spectators. Play was halted until a snake catcher arrived and managed to tease it into a bag. Eastern browns are capable of delivering a potent bite and their venom can result in progressive paralysis and uncontrollable bleeding, according to the website of the Australian Museum.

Watch the video here:

Australia is home to 20 of the world’s 25 most venomous, but deaths from bites are rare.

Thiem eventually won the match to move within one victory of the main draw.

Rafael Nadal avoided meeting a seed first up at his comeback tournament after drawing a qualifier in the Brisbane International, with Russia’s Aslan Karatsev a potential second-round opponent.

The 37-year-old Spaniard has been out of the game for almost 12 months following hip surgery after the 2023 Australian Open in January.

It was feared that Nadal, the winner of 22 Grand Slam singles titles, would never play professionally again.

However, he has fought his way back and was granted a wildcard to the season-opening Brisbane International in preparation for the first Grand Slam of the year at Melbourne Park beginning January 14.

While he missed out on facing a seed, there are plenty of accomplished players competing in Brisbane qualifying, including 2020 US Open champion Thiem and former world number eight Diego Schwartzman.

If Nadal advances, he will play eighth-seeded Karatsev or Australian wildcard Jason Kubler in the second round, with fourth seed Ugo Humbert lurking as a potential quarter-final opponent.

Britain’s Andy Murray drew second-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in an intriguing first-round clash.

Murray is a two-time winner of the Brisbane International, and beat Dimitrov in the final in 2013.

Ukrainian attack on Russian city leaves at least 10 dead

At least 10 people including one child were killed and 45 others wounded in a massive shelling of the Russian city of Belgorod by Ukraine, the Russian Emergency Ministry stated, according to Sputnik.

At around 3 pm local time, explosions were heard in Belgorod, after which black smoke was visible over the city. A few minutes later, the siren began to sound. Security services blocked the intersection of Bogdan Khmelnytsky Street and Slavy Avenue. Motorists and pedestrians were advised to avoid the area.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that on Friday night, Russian air defense systems destroyed 13 rockets over the Belgorod region. The region’s governor said that as a result of a direct hit by a shell on a private house during the massive shelling of Belgorod, one person was killed and four were wounded.

Numerous videos have appeared on social media showing the consequences of a Saturday strike by Kiev’s forces on the Russian city of Belgorod, located some 40 kilometers from the border with Ukraine, local Russian media reported.

The Russian Emergencies Ministry said on Telegram that the attack claimed the lives of nine adults and a child. Some 45 people were injured, including four children, Russia Today reported.

One of the clips, published by the Shot Telegram channel, shows civilians lying on the ground trying to protect themselves from incoming projectiles, with loud sounds of explosions heard in the background. People were seen lying among the debris and pieces of broken glass. Cries and screams can also be heard on the video as people desperately call for help and children search for their parents.

ISRO To Pen New Year 'POEM' In Space, Creating "Wealth From Waste"

ISRO To Pen New Year 'POEM' In Space, Creating 'Wealth From Waste'

The POEM will be the fourth stage of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle.(File)

New Delhi:

When India launches its specialised observatory to study neutron stars and black holes on New Year’s Day on Monday, it will also send a ‘POEM’ up into space.

The ‘PSLV Orbital Experimental Module’, or POEM, will be the fourth stage of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, which will undertake its 60th flight and carry the XPoSAT, or the X-ray Polarimeter Satellite as its primary payload. The POEM will have 10 experiments, the highlight of which will be a ‘Women Engineered Satellite’ (WESAT) made by an institute in Thiruvananthapuram.

This is the third flight of POEM, which can easily be described as a low-cost, non-human Indian space station. “The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is creating wealth from waste in space,” asserted S Somanath, chairman of the space agency.

He said that, during earlier missions, the fourth stage of the PSLV was left to burn up in space and create space debris, but it is now being used as a resource, and high-value experiments are being undertaken.

Some of the experiments on POEM are by Indian startups and others by ISRO to test and validate space technologies, using the spent fourth stage to carry out in-orbit scientific experiments for an extended duration of one to six months.

Student ‘Satellite’, Green Experiment

Among the 10 experiments is a ‘Women Engineered Satellite’ (WESAT) made by the LBS Institute of Technology for Women, Thiruvananthapuram, which has been put together thanks to the efforts of Dr Lizy Abraham, the principal investigator for the project. Sheril Mariam Jose, student coordinator for WESAT, said, “This mission holds a special significance as it marks the first-ever women-led, women-only satellite of India and it is also the first student satellite from Kerala.”

Some experts pointed out that calling WESAT a `satellite’ is a misnomer as it is merely a `payload’ onboard the POEM.

An established space startup, Bellatrix Aerospace Limited, is flying two payload experiments which include the use of a green monopropellant thruster. The world is working towards using rocket fuels that are less toxic and this startup, incubated at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, aims to make rocket launches environment-friendly.

Dhruva Aerospace Private Limited is flying experiments related to microsatellites in line with its motto: ‘Creating exceptional small satellite systems to help space exploration technology meet human imagination and innovation’. Microsatellites are very promising at a time when the world is trying to set up constellations of thousands of satellites.

The Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC), which is a part of ISRO, is flying two experiments –  a fuel cell power system and a high-energy cell.

All of the partners on POEM are trying to exploit the unique space-based low-cost resource made available by the Indian space agency. “ISRO is opening its doors wider than ever to private-sector participation so that, together, it can successfully boost the space economy for a resurgent Atmanirbhar (self-reliant) Bharat,” said Dr Pawan Goenka, Chairman, Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe).

An assessment by IN-SPACe suggests that the Indian space economy is valued at around $8 billion, with a 2% share in the global space economy. It has the potential to reach $44 billion by 2033, with about 8% of the global share.

Orbit Injection, Lowering

According to ISRO, after the injection of XPoSat at 650 km, the fourth stage (PS4) of PSLV will be lowered to a 350-km orbit by restarting it twice. The leftover propellant in the module will be disposed of through the main engines as a precursor to enabling the safety of the PS4 stage in atmospheric re-entry experiments planned in future.

The oxidiser will be let out first, followed by fuel in a predetermined sequence of operations. The existing scheme of spent stage passivation by venting the tank pressure will also be active. After the passivation of PS4, the control of the stage will be transferred to the avionics on board the POEM.

The PS4 is configured as a three-axis stabilised orbital platform for conducting experiments to space-qualify systems with novel ideas. The platform’s electrical power requirements are met by flexible solar panels in conjunction with a lithium-ion battery The orbital platform consists of avionic systems to take care of navigation, guidance, control and tele-commands and an orbital platform attitude control system.

These low-cost, high-value opportunities are part of an effort to give a catalytic boost to the Indian space ecosystem.

Grand Ambition

On a grander scale, India is aiming to set up a full-fledged Bhartiya Antariksha Station (BAS) by 2035, as mandated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to ISRO, the BAS will weigh about 25 tonnes and will be the “gateway for interplanetary missions”. It will also be used for micro-gravity studies and experiments on space biology and space medicine. Mr Somanath asserted that India will have a sustained presence in space by 2035 through an “atmanirbhar” effort.

Eurostar Train Services Disrupted After Flooding In Tunnel Near London

Eurostar Train Services Disrupted After Flooding In Tunnel Near London

Flooding in one of the Thames tunnels caused infrastructure issues.

Paris:

Flooding in a railway tunnel near London forced the cancellation of more than a dozen trains linking Britain with the European mainland early on Saturday, international rail operator Eurostar said.

“Eurostar services to and from London are being cancelled and there are severe delays to services due to infrastructure issues caused by flooding in one of the Thames tunnels located between St Pancras International and Ebbsfleet”, the company said.

The cancellations, which so far concern at least 14 trips between London and Paris, Amsterdam or Brussels, are the second blow for Eurostar customers during this year’s holiday season. On Dec. 21, a French surprise strike action thwarted Christmas travel plans for thousands.

It was not immediately clear when rail traffic would be able to resume.

Palla walks out of government program after Surekha invites Congress leader

Siddipet: The invitation to Congress leader Kommuri Prathapa Reddy onto the dais of an official programme sparked a serious argument between Forest and Endowment Minister Konda Surekha and BRS MLA from Jangaon Palla Rajeshwar Reddy in Siddipet on Saturday evening.

The Minister was in Siddipet to conduct a review meeting on Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Komuravelly jatara arrangements. Meanwhile, Prathap Reddy, who lost the Jangaon assembly election to Rajeshwar Reddy, was also invited onto the dais though he held no official post. Rajeshwar Reddy objected to this terming it as a violation of protocol.

However, the Minister said that she, in the capacity of a Minister, had every right to invite some special invitees to the meetings. As she refused to send Prathap Reddy off the dais, Rajeshwar Reddy said he would not participate in meetings where the protocol was not followed.

Surekha asked him to leave the meeting if he was not willing to participate. After a few minutes of argument, Rajeshwar Reddy left the meeting place in protest. Collector Prasanth Jeevan Patil remained a mute spectator while the argument was going on between the MLA and the Minister.
