IndiGo Pilot Chants "Jai Shri Ram" As First Flight To Ayodhya Takes Off

IndiGo Pilot Chants 'Jai Shri Ram' As First Flight To Ayodhya Takes Off

The Indigo pilot said he felt fortunate that he flew the first flight to Ayodhya.

Ayodhya:

IndiGo pilot Ashutosh Shekhar chanted “Jai Shri Ram” on the aircraft’s public announcement system as the first flight to the temple town of Ayodhya took off from Delhi on Saturday.

Addressing the passengers, 43-year-old Shekhar said he felt fortunate that his company entrusted him with the responsibility to fly the first flight to Ayodhya, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the airport in the town in Uttar Pradesh.

He introduced his co-pilot Nikhil Bakshi and cabin in-charge Kirti to the flyers.

While Shekhar was addressing the passengers, his wife Sweta Ranjan recorded this “memorable” event on her mobile phone.

“It was a lifetime experience,” Ranjan told PTI.

“Passengers chanted mantras, recited Hanuman Chalisa and sang Bhajan throughout the about-an-hour journey from Delhi to Ayodhya. The whole atmosphere in the cabin was spiritual,” she added.

Talking about the passengers, Ranjan said they were dressed in saffron colour outfits and many of them tied saffron headgear.

“They were carrying gangajal, incense sticks, flowers and sweets. Some of them even carried saffron flags with ‘Jai Shri Ram’, ‘Om’ or ‘Swastika’ on them,” Ranjan said, adding that the atmosphere was almost the same when the flight was returning to Delhi with devotees. Union minister V K Singh also travelled in the return flight.

The inaugural flight started at 2:40 pm and landed in Ayodhya at 4 pm. On return journey, the flight took off at 4:40 pm and reached Delhi at 5:55 in the evening.

A day before, Shekhar’s father, 75-year-old Mukteshwar Singh, had spoken to PTI and said that it was proud moment for the family as his son would pilot the first passenger plane to the new airport after its inauguration by the prime minister.

“Lord Ram has been kind to us,” said Shekhar’s mother Madhurani Singh (68).

“Since the day he entered the aviation sector, it was my dream to see him flying an aircraft to Ayodhya. It has come true after 12 years. What could be more joyous than seeing a dream being fulfilled,” she said.

This is a “divine moment”, said Mukteshwar Singh.

He added that his family’s association with Ayodhya goes back four generations when his great grandfather visited the city to become a disciple of Shri Ram Vallabha Kunj Janki Ghat.

Shekhar is a disciple of Guru Shree Ram Shankar Das ji Vedanti of the city, his family members said.

“It is a very emotional moment for the whole family. I believe he came into the aviation sector because of the blessings of our gurus. Today, he is flying the first aircraft to Ayodhya…. It is a matter of great pride for the family,” Mukteshwar Singh told PTI.

“Both my children are very happy. We believe that our happiness and prosperity…is by the grace of our divine association with the birthplace of Lord Ram,” Ranjan said.

The airport inauguration came days before the consecration ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22.

Washington:

An American destroyer shot down two anti-ship ballistic missiles fired from Yemen Saturday as it responded to a call for help from a container ship that was hit in a separate strike, the US military said.

The missiles were launched from territory controlled by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a social media post, describing it as the “23rd illegal attack by the Houthis on international shipping” since November 19.

The Houthis have repeatedly targeted vessels in the vital Red Sea shipping lane with strikes they say are in support of Palestinians in Gaza, where Israel is battling Palestinian group Hamas.

CENTCOM said the USS Gravely and USS Laboon — both destroyers — responded to a request for assistance from the Maersk Hangzhou, a Singapore-flagged, Denmark-owned and operated container ship that reported being struck by a missile while transiting the Red Sea.

While responding, the Gravely shot down the missiles, which were fired “toward the ships,” it said.

The attacks by the Yemeni rebels — who have said they are targeting Israel and Israeli-linked vessels — are endangering a transit route that carries up to 12 percent of global trade, prompting the United States to set up a multinational naval task force earlier this month to protect Red Sea shipping.

The latest round of the Israel-Hamas conflict began when the Palestinian group carried out a shock cross-border attack from Gaza on October 7 that killed about 1,140 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures.

Following the attack, the United States rushed military aid to Israel, which has carried out a relentless campaign in Gaza that has killed at least 21,672 people, also mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry.

Those deaths have sparked widespread anger in the Middle East and provided an impetus for attacks by armed groups across the region that are opposed to Israel.

US forces in Iraq and Syria have also repeatedly come under fire from drone and rocket attacks that Washington says are being carried out by Iran-backed armed groups.

Destination USA: CPT and OPT Options for International Students

CPT and OPT options allow international students to work part-time during the academic session, and full-time when the program is not in session, after completing one year of coursework

Destination USA: CPT and OPT Options for International Students

Last week, we delved into on-campus work opportunities, encompassing assistantships and campus jobs, to explore work options available for international students in the United States.

Continuing this exploration, this week we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of two significant options available for international students holding an F-1 student visa pursuing higher education in the United States: CPT and OPT.

CPT and OPT options allow international students to work part-time (20 hours or less per week) during the academic session, and full-time (over 20 hours per week) when the program is not in session, after completing one year of coursework.

CPT is an off-campus internship or practicum opportunity directly related to a student’s major or specialization. While some academic programs mandate students to undergo practical work experiences (required CPT), students can also gain work experience in their field of study through optional CPT.

CPT positions can be paid or unpaid, but students must obtain CPT authorization from their university’s international student office for paid positions. For more information about CPT authorization, students can visit CPT Authorization Information.

OPT is another off-campus work opportunity available to students. They can apply for OPT after being “lawfully enrolled on a full-time basis for one full academic year” in a US institution (pre-completion OPT) or after the completion of an academic degree (post-completion OPT).

OPT provides 12 months of work directly related to the student’s academic major or specialization. Students pursuing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs can extend this duration to 24 months. However, if a student participates in pre-completion OPT, the duration is deducted from their authorized period of post-completion OPT.

To apply for OPT, students must submit their request to the Designated School Official (DSO) at their university/college and after that file their application, including the fee and supporting documents, with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

Students must commence their OPT only after receiving the necessary approvals from USCIS. Students can visit USCIS OPT Information or SEVIS Help Hub – OPT Information for more detailed information about OPT.

Before contemplating the OPT or CPT option, students are strongly advised to contact the international student office at their respective campus. Proper guidance from the university’s designated officials is crucial to navigating these opportunities effectively.

India Open: Tricky Draw Awaits Home Shuttlers

New Delhi:

Top Indian shuttlers, including HS Prannoy and Lakshya Sen, have been handed tricky draws at next month’s India Open Super 750 badminton tournament as they gear up to exploit the home advantage with Paris Olympics qualification at stake. With the race to Paris heading into its final stretch, Indian shuttlers will look to earn valuable points at the Yonex-Sunrise India Open to be held at the Indira Gandhi Stadium from January 16 to 21. While Asian Games gold medallists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty and bronze medallist Prannoy will aim to boost their position in the world ranking, the likes of Kidambi Srikanth, Sen and Priyanshu Rajawat will be gunning for the second Indian spot at the Games.

According to the Olympics qualification rules, two Indian men’s singles players can participate in the Games only if both of them are ranked among the Top-16 at the end of the qualification process on April 30.

It will be an all Indian opening match between 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Sen and Rajawat, while eighth seed Prannoy will be open against Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen.

He will face the winner of the match between Sen and Rajawat if he clears the first-round hurdle.

Former champion Srikanth, currently in 24th position in the race to Paris rankings, will meet Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu in the opening round and has a potential second-round clash against defending champion Kunlavut Viditsarn of Thailand.

In men’s doubles, former champions and second seeds Satwik and Chirag will kick off their challenge against World No. 25 Fang-Jen Lee and Fang-Chih Lee of Taipei in the opening round and are expected to go deeper in the competition.

The women’s doubles combinations of Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand and Ashwini Ponnappa-Tanisha Crasto are also locked into a see-saw battle for an Olympics spot.

All England semi-finalists Treesa and Gayatri have a tough opener against fourth seeds Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida of Japan, while Ashwini and Crasto, who made three back-to-back finals to end 2023 on a high, will face World No. 10 Thai combination of Rawinda Prajongjai and Jongkolphan Kititharakul in the first round.

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu will miss the tournament as she is recovering from left knee injury which she sustained during the French Open in October. She might be out till February.

“All our Olympic hopefuls will have a good chance of using the home conditions to earn valuable points and even win the title,” BAI General Secretary Sanjay Mishra said in a release.

“It will also be a great opportunity for fans to witness some breathtaking action as more top ranked players will be participating.” Among the other high profile first round clashes, defending women’s singles champion An Se Young of South Korea will take on three-time champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand while Spain’s Carolina Marin will face Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in a clash of former world champions.

In men’s singles, former world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore will meet third seed and reigning All England champion Li Shi Feng of China while top seed Viktor Axelsen will open his campaign against Wang Tzu Wei of Chinese Taipei.

Organised by the Badminton Association of India (BAI), the event was upgraded to Super 750 category from Super 500 last year. It has also meant that almost all the Top-10 players in current world ranking will be in action at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall and badminton lovers can enjoy watching them in action on all six days for free as the BAI has decided to keep the entry free.

'American Idol' Judge Paula Abdul Sues UK TV Producer For Sexual Assault

US Singer Sues Top Producer For Sexual Assault During Reality Show

Abdul’s contracts prohibited her from speaking out in the past, the lawsuit said. (File)

US singer, dancer and “American Idol” star Paula Abdul filed a lawsuit accusing British television executive Nigel Lythgoe of sexually assaulting her when they worked together on two popular talent shows, according to court documents.

Abdul, who rose to fame as a chart-topping singer in the late 1980s, alleged in a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Friday that Lythgoe sexually assaulted her in an elevator during the early seasons of TV singing competition series “American Idol.”

Lythgoe, the producer of several hit television talent competitions, allegedly groped Abdul’s breasts and genitals, among other unwanted physical contact in a hotel elevator after a day of auditions for “American Idol.” Abdul tried to push him away and ran as soon as the elevator doors opened, court documents said.

Reuters was not immediately able to reach Abdul or Lythgoe for comment.

Lythogoe denied the allegations, according to TMZ.

“For more than two decades, Paula and I have interacted as dear — and entirely platonic — friends and colleagues,” he told TMZ. “Yesterday, however, out of the blue, I learned of these claims in the press and I want to be clear: not only are they false, they are deeply offensive to me and to everything I stand for.”

According to court documents, Abdul immediately reported the assault by Lythgoe, an “American Idol” producer at the time, to her representatives but did not take action for fear of losing her job, the lawsuit said.

Moreover, Abdul’s contracts prohibited her from speaking out, the lawsuit said.

Another alleged assault took place years later when Abdul worked as a judge on “So You Think You Can Dance,” according to court documents. The star, 61, enjoyed renewed popularity in the early 2000s starring as a judge on talent TV series.

The lawsuit alleges Lythgoe, 74, assaulted her on the couch of his Los Angeles home after a work dinner. Abdul again firmly rejected him and “immediately left Lythgoe’s home,” court documents said.

In the lawsuit, Abdul levels other allegations at the entertainment industry mogul, including that Lythgoe once called to taunt her and said it had been “seven years and the statute of limitations had run” on the alleged assaults.

The lawsuit alleged that the star also witnessed Lythgoe assault one of her assistants on “So You Think You Can Dance.”

The lawsuit was submitted days before the Dec. 31 filing deadline established under the California’s Sexual Abuse and Cover-Up Accountability Act. The legislation allows individuals to bring certain sexual abuse lawsuits that would otherwise have fallen outside the statute of limitations.

Ram Mandir doors carved in Hyderabad

Ram Mandir doors carved in Hyderabad

Around 60 skilled sculptors, carpenters are working under guidance of chief sculptor Ramesh.

Hyderabad: As Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir is set to open its doors for devotees soon, a Hyderabad-based company is at the epicentre of carving those very doors. With a legacy of over 100 years in the business of wood, Anuradha Timbers International located in New Bowenpally, has been busy for the past few months in completing this pivotal task.

Their initial contribution was a miniature wooden model of the temple, which, to their surprise, will be placed on the way to darshan. Securing the contract on their merit and based on the experience of handling other high-profile projects like Yadagirigutta Temple, the company’s craftsmen began work back in June at the premises of the temple.

Around 60 skilled wood sculptors and carpenters under the guidance of chief sculptor Ramesh carved the 18 doors on the ground floor of the temple, including the four-leaf folding main entrance door which is eight feet in height and 12 feet in width.

Managing Partner Ch. Sarath Babu describes the assignment as the most important project and an overwhelming experience. “We are building these doors to last a thousand years using traditional techniques where we do not use any nails to fix the doors. The experience in our family is what helped us in completing this,” he says.

Crafted by hand in the Nagara style, all the doors in the inner sanctum sanctorum and the five mandaps are gold-plated. The intricate design on each of these doors includes figures of blessing elephants, lotus, women welcoming with hands joined together, peacocks, and other jaali patterns.

“We have, so far, delivered all the doors on the ground floor. Along with them, we will be making around 100 more doors to be placed in and around the temple,” says executive partner Ch. Kiran Kumar, adding that the work had to be done on a tight schedule.

While it would usually take workers more than eight months to deliver doors with such detailed designs, these had to be completed in less than two months without compromising on the quality. From designs to the teak wood used, everything had to be cleared by the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Theerth Kshetra Trust.

'Israel targets UNRWA to expel it from Gaza, change territory's demographics'

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry says Israel has been targeting the UN agency for Palestinian refugees across the Gaza Strip to force it to leave the territory and change Gaza’s demographic characteristics.

The ministry made the remarks in a statement on Saturday concerning the Israeli regime’s attacks on employees and facilities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

According to the ministry, since the beginning of Israel’s genocidal war against Gaza on October 7, the regime has killed hundreds of the agency’s employees, destroyed its centers and schools, and obstructed its work and ability to perform its tasks, especially in the northern part of the Gaza Strip.

It added that the regime’s assaults on the UN agency are also in line with Israel’s plans to forcefully displace the people of Gaza and change demographic characteristics of the coastal territory.

“Such Israeli plans directly target the Palestinian issue and the rights of our people, most notably the right of return [to their homeland], and are an integral part of an official Israeli policy aimed at liquidating the Palestinian issue,” the ministry noted.

It added that apart from the official goals declared for the regime’s war on Gaza by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he is using genocide of Palestinian civilians as a means to achieve other strategic goals, which are gradually unfolding with each passing day.

Israel’s genocide in Gaza has so far killed at least 21,672 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured over 56,000 others.

The regime has also cut off the flow of basic supplies such as water, electricity, medicines, and fuel, to one of the world’s most densely-populated territories that houses over two million Palestinians.
