New York:

A man who attacked an elderly Sikh person during a car accident in New York, repeatedly calling him “turban man” and fatally beating him has been charged with manslaughter and assault as hate crimes, prosecutors said.

Gilbert Augustin was arraigned on Tuesday on an indictment charging him with manslaughter and assault as hate crimes in the death of 66-year-old Jasmer Singh, whom he attacked after a fender bender in Kew Gardens in the neighbourhood of Queens, District Attorney Melinda Katz said.

During the dispute that preceded the fatal beating, Augustin is accused of repeatedly referring to Jasmer Singh as a “turban man”.

“This is a case of a fender bender immediately escalating to hateful language and then brutal, deadly violence. We will show in court that it was a rage inflamed by hate that led to this senseless tragedy. The defendant will have to answer to some very serious charges,” Ms Katz said.

Augustin faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted. Queens Supreme Court Justice Kenneth Holder ordered him to return to court on December 6.

The October 19 attack on Singh, which led to his death, came just days after a 19-year-old Sikh boy was attacked by Christopher Philippeaux, 26, while he was riding the bus in Richmond Hill.

Philippeaux punched the Sikh teenager in the back of the head, tried to knock off his turban and told him: “We don’t wear that in this country.” Philippeaux has been charged with assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment.

As the Sikh community raised concerns over the recent incidents of hate crime and assault, New York City Mayor Eric Adams vowed to protect members of the community and gave a clarion call for educating people about Sikhism.

On Sunday, Adams and New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar met and addressed members of the Sikh community at the Baba Makhan Shah Lubana Sikh Centre in the Queens neighbourhood of South Richmond Hill.

“You are not about terror, you are about protector. That is what needs to be taught throughout this entire city. Our young people need to know that, our adults need to know that,” Adams had said.

Describing Sikhs as “protectors” of society, Rajkumar asserted that the hateful targeting of Sikhs is “not acceptable” and perpetrators of such violence will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of law.

“For the first time, we are going to use the levers of government to end hate crimes against Sikh Americans. For the first time, we are going to come together and…educate… New York State, the United States and the entire world about who the Sikh people truly are so we are not attacked and misunderstood,” Rajkumar, the first Indian-American woman elected to New York State Office and who described herself as a “daughter of Punjab”, said.

Rajkumar had said this was not the first time she had visited the Gurudwara and had spoken out against hate crimes.

“But it is the last time I want to be standing here speaking out against hate crimes. Starting now we are going to end the hateful targeting of Sikhs,” she said.

Singh’s son Subeg Singh Multani, an immigration attorney, who was also present at the event on Sunday, had said that the attack on his father should be pursued as a hate crime.

Multani, who became emotional and choked up as he addressed the gathering, said his father came from India to the US in the early 1990s with the American dream in his eyes. “We didn’t know that the dream would be shattered the way it has shattered” on October 19 in this “great” and diverse city of New York.

Multani had called on members of the community to join him in court for Augustin’s arraignment. “We will show the solidarity and unity” to the judge. “We can show them this is a hate crime. This case must be pursued as a hate crime,” he had said.

According to the charges in the case, late morning on October 19, Singh was driving a vehicle that collided with Augustin’s car. Immediately following the collision, Singh and Augustin pulled over to assess the damage.

A witness observed Augustin get out of his car and approach Singh, who remained seated in his vehicle and engaged in a verbal dispute with the victim.

During the dispute, the witness heard Augustin say to Singh: “No police, no police.” The witness also heard Augustin repeatedly refer to Singh as a “Turban man.” While arguing angrily with Singh, Augustin told the victim that he was not going to allow him to go home and did not want him to call the police.

According to witness testimony and video surveillance, Augustin reached into Singh’s car and grabbed Singh’s cell phone. Singh got out of his car and followed Augustin, who appeared to be holding two phones. The pair appeared to argue. Singh eventually recovered his phone, prosecutors said in a statement.

As Singh was walking back to his car, Augustin punched him three times in the head and face. One of the punches caused Singh’s turban to come flying off his head.

As a result of the blows, Singh fell backwards to the ground, the back of his head hitting the pavement. Singh suffered a brain injury and was taken to a hospital. He died the next day.

Prosecutors said that after striking Singh, Augustin got into his car and drove away. The day after the assault, a New York Police Department officer saw Augustin sitting in his car in Jamaica.

Augustin was unable to produce a valid driver’s license or insurance. A review of motor vehicle records showed his driver’s license was suspended. He was taken into custody.

Augustin, 30, of 111th Avenue in Jamaica, was charged in a 20-count indictment. The charges include manslaughter in the first degree as a hate crime; assault in the second degree as a hate crime; two counts of operating or driving a motor vehicle without a license; leaving the scene of an incident without reporting and reckless driving.

Delhi HC dismisses Sanjay Singh’s plea against arrest in excise policy case

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday dismissed AAP Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh’s plea challenging his arrest and remand in connection with a case pertaining to the now-scrapped excise policy, calling it premature.

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma pronounced the order after having reserved it on Thursday. On Thursday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had told the High Court that a clear-cut case was made out against Singh.

Opposing Singh’s plea, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju appearing for the ED had said that the accused was arrested in accordance with law, and that his plea was not maintainable.

The ASG said that Singh;s plea was a bail application in the guise of a writ petition. On Tuesday, Singh told the High Court that the law against money laundering cannot become an instrument of oppression. Senior advocate Vikram Choudhari had submitted that his arrest was illegal, malicious and a case of perversion of power.

On October 13, the High Court had sought the ED’s response on Singh’s plea and had issued notice to the financial probe agency. Special Judge MK Nagpal of Rouse Avenue Court had, the same day, sent Singh to 14 days’ judicial custody in the case.

Singh has challenged his arrest by and remand to the ED saying that the grounds of arrest were not given to him by the financial probe agency. On October 10, the ED had sought his further custody from Judge Nagpal on the grounds that his behaviour was totally non-cooperative with regard to the source of acquisition of some confidential documents of the ED pertaining to this case.

The other grounds on which the ED sought Singh’s custody were that he refused to acknowledge or sign the Call Detail Record (CDR) of his mobile number in respect to the calls appearing between the said number and the number of the co-accused, Amit Arora.

It was further submitted that the digital data of around 200 GB had been recovered during the course of the fresh search and the same is yet to be analysed and the task of confrontation of the accused with the said digital data is not completed. On the other hand, senior advocate Rebecca John, who argued for Singh, claimed that the ED had no grounds for seeking extension of his custody in the case.

The financial probe agency on October 4 arrested Singh after carrying out searches at his residence in the North Avenue area.

Scientists Prove Space Solar Farms Work, Can Bring Clean Energy Back To Earth

Scientists Prove Space Solar Farms Work, Can Bring Clean Energy Back To Earth

Researchers claim solar farms in space are commercially viable.

Scientists have been working tirelessly to find new ways to get clean energy. Their relentless pursuit has finally paid off with a groundbreaking development: the deployment of solar panels in space. This innovative approach promises to revolutionise our access to sustainable power, presenting a potential game-changer for our planet’s energy needs.

According to new research from the Universities of Surrey and Swansea, it’s viable to produce low-cost, lightweight solar panels that can generate energy in space. The first study of its kind followed a satellite over six years, observing how the panels generated power and weathered solar radiation over 30,000 orbits. The findings could pave the way for commercially viable solar farms in space. The satellite was built by the Surrey Space Centre with the help of young engineers from the Algerian Space Agency.

“We are very pleased that a mission designed to last one year is still working after six. These detailed data show the panels have resisted radiation, and their thin-film structure has not deteriorated in the harsh thermal and vacuum conditions of space. This ultra-low-mass solar cell technology could lead to large, low-cost solar power stations deployed in space, bringing clean energy back to Earth, and now we have the first evidence that the technology works reliably in orbit. Professor Craig Underwood, Emeritus Professor of Spacecraft Engineering, Surrey Space Centre, University of Surrey,” Professor Craig Underwood, Emeritus Professor of Spacecraft Engineering, Surrey Space Centre, University of Surrey, said.

As per a news release, researchers at the University of Swansea have developed new solar cells from cadmium telluride. These cells are larger, lighter, and more efficient than current technology, and they are also relatively cheap to make.

Scientists at the University of Surrey designed instruments to measure the performance of these cells in orbit. The satellite that carried the cells was designed and built at the Surrey Space Centre with the help of trainee engineers from the Algerian Space Agency. Although the cells’ power output decreased over time, the researchers believe that their findings prove that solar power satellites are possible and could be commercially viable.

“The successful flight test of this novel thin-film solar cell payload has leveraged funding opportunities to further develop this technology. Large-area solar arrays for space applications are a rapidly expanding market, and demonstrations such as this help to build on the UK’s world-class reputations for space technology,” said Dr Dan Lamb, University of Swansea.

Pak Great Calls Jasprit Bumrah 'Baby Bowler'. Justifies Strange Comment

The India vs Pakistan rivalry always makes news. Opinions and comments from both sides more often than not are strong and sharp. During the India vs Pakistan ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 the hype hit the roof. The Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team won the match easily and are on a winning run of six matches. On the other hand, the Babar Azam-led Pakistan cricket team are in tricky spot with only three wins in seven matches. Their chances of entering the semi-final are slim.

In the midst of this, former Pakistan allrounder Abdul Razzaq was asked a question on an Youtube channel ‘Hasna Mana Hai’ regarding an old comment of his, where he called Jasprit Bumrah, a ‘baby bowler’. Jasprit Bumrah has been the leader of the Indian bowling attack at the Cricket World Cup, with his latest fine show coming against England.

In 2019, in an interview to Cricket Pakistan, Abdul Razzaq had said: “I have played against great bowlers like Glenn Mcgrath and Wasim Akram, so Bumrah is a baby bowler in front of me and I could have easily dominated and attacked him.”

On the TV show, Abdul Razzaq was asked about his comments considering his performance in the World Cup.

“Whatever I said, it was interpreted in the wrong way. The question was how do you see Glenn McGrath, Wasim Akram, Jasprit Bumrah, Shoaib Akhtar. Unke samne, woh baby bowler hai (He is a baby bowler  in front of them) Maine ye kabhi nhi kaha ki Bumrah acha bowler nhi hai. Par jab aap unhe Wasim Akram, Glenn McGrath se compare karenge to unhe baby bowler na kahu to aur kya kahu. (I have never said that he is not a good bowler. But if you compare him with Wasim Akram, Glenn McGrath, you tell me if I am wrong in calling him baby bowler). Jab main team main aaya tha, main bhi bachcha tha Wasim Akram ke samne (When I came into the Pakistan team, I was also a baby in front of Wasim Akram),” said Razzaq.

While Bumrah has often been compared with Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi, former Pakistan pace great Wasim Akram seems to have completely ended that debate.

“He is the best in the world right now. Top of the ladder! The control, the pace, the variations, just a complete bowler. A treat to watch. With the new ball, to get this kind of movement on this kind of pitch … pace, carry, follow-through… you name it he’s a complete bowler,” Wasim said in a chat on A-Sports.
