Siddaramaiah Writes To PM, Seeks Help For Treatment Of 15-Month-Old Boy

The Karnataka chief minister has appealed for waiving import taxes, and monetary support to the family.

Bengaluru:

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking help for the medical treatment of a 15-month-old boy with a rare disease.

The Karnataka chief minister has requested PM Modi’s assistance in securing financial support from the Centre for the child’s treatment and urged the consideration of waiving import taxes on the required Zolgensma injection.

In his letter to PM Modi, chief minister Siddaramaiah said that the baby, Maurya, from Karnataka, is battling a severe health condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

“Our medical community has informed us of a potential cure in the form of an injection named Zolgensma. However, the exorbitant cost of this single-dose medication stands at approximately Rs 17.5 crore, presenting a formidable challenge for the family to access this crucial treatment,” he said.

“While the drug’s price itself is overwhelming, the added import taxes substantially increase the financial burden, making the acquisition of this lifesaving medication nearly unattainable for them,” chief minister Siddaramaiah said.

Mr Siddaramaiah, in his letter, requested intervention from PM Modi in two critical aspects: first, to direct the Ministry of Finance to waive off the import taxes on Zolgensma required for the child’s treatment; and second, to consider allocating monetary support from the PM CARES Fund to assist with the procurement of the injection.

He also emphasised that these compassionate steps will significantly alleviate the financial burden on Maurya’s family and reflect the nation’s commitment to championing the health and well-being of its youngest citizens.

“While I recognise the unique nature of this plea, I genuinely believe that the gravity of this situation and the life of a young child hanging in the balance warrant our collective action and support. I am confident that with your kind intervention, we can extend our collective support and offer a ray of hope to young Maurya and his family,” Siddaramaiah further said in his letter.

“I thank you for your attention to this matter and eagerly await your positive response,” he added.

Hyderabad: BRS president and Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao is invincible, and another KCR has to be born to defeat him in electoral politics, BRS MLC K Kavitha said on Friday.

Addressing the Maha Yuva Garjana Sabha in Bodhan town, she said Chandrashekhar Rao would be the Chief Minister again as people were waiting for his third innings to unfold.

Hailing the Chief Minister for successfully fulfilling the three promises- Neellu, Nidhulu, Niyamakalu (water, resources and jobs), she said the BRS government had succeeded where previous regimes of the Congress had failed. In terms of job creation, the Congress had let down the youth. It could provide hardly 24,000 jobs in the undivided State and the Telangana’s share of this was only 10,000 jobs.

She said over 2.32 lakh vacancies were notified during the last nine and half years of the BRS rule, of which 1.60 lakh were already filled. The recruitment process for the remaining posts was in different stages. Coming down heavily on the Congress leadership for its customary practice of creating legal hurdles for stalling the recruitment process, she said different sections of people including the students and the youth were deprived of the benefits due to them due to machinations of the Congress.

Taking dig at the Congress nominee for Bodhan constituency P Sudarshan Reddy, she said though he had served as Minister for Major Irrigation during the tenure of S Rajashekhar Reddy, he could deliver nothing for his own constituency. He did not do anything for his own village Sirnapalli either. Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had given Rs 17crore to the area.

The 12-month programme, partnered with more than 30 organisations from industry and the investor community, will see select partners investing up to $25 million in the most promising startups. Moreover, investors will extend support in various forms, catalysing growth and innovation, said Nasscom.

“Unlocking the full potential of generative AI startups for India, and from India for the world, will not only require rigorous assessment of sustainable whitespace opportunities in various sectors, but will also require innovative thinking towards inviting patient capital and facilitating compute capabilities at scale,” said Debjani Ghosh, President, Nasscom.

The startups were selected from more than 70 applicants. The average startup in the cohort is 2-year-old and has already raised half a million dollars from institutional investors.

The startups offer solutions that generate text, audio, code, video/image, and multimodal output with strong use cases for retail, media and entertainment, banking and financial services, and various functions of the enterprise.

They will gain access to cutting-edge technology stacks and GPU compute nodes, enabling them to accelerate their AI projects. The Telangana government collaborated as the state partner for the programme, offering startups the opportunity to work on impactful B2G (business-to-government) use cases.

The Indian Generative AI landscape had more than 60 startups dedicated to offering solutions and services to their customers spread across various industry verticals. More than $590 million in funding has already flown into this space, with 2022 being the year with the heaviest funding inflow, according to Nasscom.

BRS strengthens public sector units while Modi sells them, says CM KCR

BRS strengthens public sector units while Modi sells them, says CM KCR

CM KCR addressing the Praja Ashirvada Sabha at Dharmapuri on Thursday.

Hyderabad: Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his continuing support to privatisation of public sector units, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Thursday said Modi would not spare any PSU in the country in the long run. Much in contrast, the BRS government had sought to strengthen State-owned units.

Addressing the Praja Ashirvada Sabha at Dharmapuri, the Chief Minister said Modi’s obsession with privatization was seeing trains, ports and airports being sold to the private sector. He was bent upon privatizing the power sector too and wanted Telangana to install meters for agriculture pump-sets as well. The State had opposed this move to protect the interests of farmers, he said, adding that though the State would lose over Rs.25,000 crore from the Centre by turning down these meters, it did not yield to Modi’s pressure.

Stating that vote was the most powerful weapon in the hands of the people, he advised the voters to make informed decisions while exercising their franchise. The Congress was approaching voters asking for ‘just one chance’. Truth was that it was given 11 chances but even then had failed give even water and electricity to the people.

The transformation of Dharmapuri assembly constituency was a classic example of Telangana’s remarkable growth story. The irrigation needs of the tail-end ayacut were attended to in the constituency after the BRS came to power. Over 1.30 lakh acres of area was brought under cultivation in the constituency by addressing issues in key areas such as irrigation and drinking water needs and power.

The needs of the Dharmapuri constituency were addressed by Minister Koppula Eashwar. Ponds and tanks were renovated under Mission Kakatiya. Check dams were built on rivers. Minor irrigation sources were repaired under Mission Kakatiya. The facility of 24 hour power supply, which was made a reality in Telangana, was still missing in the Prime Minister’s own State, he said.

At Balkonda, the Chief Minister recalled that the Dalit Bandhu was his brainchild.

“No one had approached me asking for implementation of such a scheme. It was introduced with a view to improve the lot of disadvantaged communities. The Dalit Bandhu assistance may not reach everyone overnight. But it will certainly bring a change in the lives of every Dalit family in due course. It will be implemented covering each and every Dalit family. It is my responsibility to make it true,” he said.

Over 17 States have beedi-workers engaged in the industry. But a pension scheme covering beedi-workers was unique to Telangana, he said.

Reiterating that the Dharani portal had transformed land administration system in the State, Chandrashekhar Rao said it was because of Dharani that farmers could receive Rythu Bandhu assistance with just the click of a button.

Farmers were also able to receive money after crop procurement by State agencies without any delay because of Dharani, he said, adding that in the absence of Dharani, which would happen if the Congress was given a chance, farmers would have return to the dark days of the past.
