"…Is Going To Take Over": Ashwin's Huge CSK Captaincy Prediction

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 retention list is out. Several top names like Ben Stokes, Shardul Thakur have been released by their respective franchises ahead of the IPL 2024 auction on December 19. There have been trade-offs too with Hardik Pandya moving back to Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans making the maximum noise. For IPL defending champions, the release of Ben Stokes made the headlines. Dwaine Pretorius and Kyle Jamieson were released too.

One major question in front of Chennai Super Kings is the succession plan for skipper MS Dhoni. When Ben Stokes was roped in, the general impression was that he could be the next CSK captain. But the star England all-rounder has been released. Ravichandran Ashwin feels it is Ruturaj Gaikwad who will take over the reins.

“The holes that CSK will try to fill are ones of captaincy, which I believe Ruturaj Gaikwad is going to take over, as Ambati Rayudu said in his latest interview. Ben Stokes, too, was taken by CSK on the same philosophy of playing an able right hand. Needless to say, he is a quality leader, and CSK is a team that values experience. I think they’ll go back to Shardul and get their combination back,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

“Another thing that they would be thinking about is who is the replacement keeper for MS Dhoni and even about retentions next year. Actually, there were so many rumours in the air that CSK was going to trade this player to see him as a future successor to MS Dhoni. I don’t want to call out names, as I am also playing in a franchise. But a team like CSK is filled with thinkers,” Ashwin added.

Chennai Super Kings Complete Squad after retention:MS Dhoni (captain & wicket-keeper), Moeen Ali, Deepak Chahar, Devon Conway (wk), Tushar Deshpande, Shivam Dube, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Ravindra Jadeja, Ajay Mandal, Mukesh Choudhary, Matheesha Pathirana, Ajinkya Rahane, Shaik Rasheed, Mitchell Santner, Simarjeet Singh, Nishant Sindhu, Prashant Solanki, Maheesh Theekshana.

Complete List of Released Players: Ben Stokes, Ambati Rayudu, Dwaine Pretorius, Bhagath Varma, Subhranshu Senapati, Sisanda Magala, Kyle Jamieson, Akash Singh.

Saudi Arabia extends cut in oil it sends to the world in bid to boost prices

London: Saudi Arabia will extend a cut in the amount of oil it sends to the world after a series of reductions by members of the OPEC+ alliance of major producing countries failed to prop up prices.

That’s been a good thing for US drivers, who have been able to fill their gas tanks for less money in recent months. But it’s bad news for OPEC+ countries whose oil income bolsters their economies and who have faced setbacks in pushing prices higher despite initial fears that the Israel-Hamas war could affect oil flows.

The Saudi Energy Ministry said in a statement on its website that its voluntary cut of 1 million barrels per day will stay in place through the first three months of next year.

It was announced after rest of the OPEC oil cartel and allied nations like Russia met in an online meeting about global oil production.

The OPEC+ coalition announced that Brazil will join the bloc in January, bringing one of the world’s fastest-growing oil producers into the alliance.

Abhinav Bindra stresses need to look at sport holistically, not from the prism of high-performance

Matthew Wade, who is leading Australia in the ongoing T20 series against India, backed Maxwell to shine in the longest format of the game.

Bengaluru: The country’s most decorated shooter Abhinav Bindra on Thursday stressed that for India to progress as a sporting nation it must create a sustainable and thriving ecosystem and stop looking at sports from the narrow lens of high performance.

Bindra, India’s first individual Olympic champion, shared his thoughts at the RCB Innovation Lab’s Leaders Meet India.

“What I would really like to see India as a country is to start looking at sport more holistically and not singularly from the prism of high performance. It is a very narrow view and if you only look at it from a high-performance perspective, it will be very challenging to make that next leap from seven Olympic medals in Tokyo,” Bindra said as quoted from RCB.

Bindra said if India aspires to become a sporting superpower then the investment has to be holistic.

“If you want to get to 50 it is not just going to be pumping money into the elite. It is only going to be a very small percentage of your population that is going to get involved in sports, so you need more people to play and the by-product of that hopefully will be that more people will be involved in sport. So I believe that the shift in perspective needs to happen and it needs to happen now,” Bindra said.

“It is extremely credible what RCB with their Innovation Lab has put together here. India is not a one-sport nation and they recognized that fact. To bring thought leadership into Indian sport is the need of the hour and an event like this brings experts from all over the world to ideate on the newest global trends, and opportunities that exist. Congratulations to RCB and I wish them all the best for the future,” commented Mr. Abhinav Bindra while discussing the significance of the event,” Bindra added.

The 41-year-old, who has secured India’s only gold medal in shooting at the Olympics to date, also talked about the country potentially hosting the prestigious multi-sport tournament as well as the Youth Olympics Games.

“I think giving more opportunities to young people to simply enjoy sport is that to me an important element that has to be developed for the whole Olympic project. The number two point is developing an economy for the future. The whole country needs to be involved in not just celebrating Indian success but also celebrating sports,” Bindra said.

“If you have that larger goal in mind and you have this more holistic thought process in mind, I think you come up with an interesting project that will not just be limited to the two weeks of sports, but to how the Olympic Games can truly be the driver for real change,” he added.

The RCB Innovation Lab’s Leaders Meet India concluded on Thursday.

'Africa's Oldest Mother': 70-Year-Old Ugandan Woman Gives Birth To Twins

Safina Namukwaya described her joy at the arrival of the twins.

Kampala, Uganda:

A Ugandan woman aged 70 has given birth to twins, her doctor said Thursday, in what the mother hailed as a miracle.

Safina Namukwaya described her joy at the arrival of the twins who were born on Wednesday at a medical facility in the capital Kampala, where she had received fertility treatment.

“This is extraordinary achievement, delivering twins to Africa’s oldest mother at 70 years,” Doctor Edward Tamale Sali, who supervised her pregnancy and delivery, told AFP.

He said mother and babies — a boy and a girl — were still in the care of the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre that he founded, but were in good health.

“There is no way to express my joy at this moment,” said Namukwaya, who lives in the rural of Masaka about 120 kilometres (75 miles) west of Kampala.

“At 70 years when I’m considered weak, unable to get pregnant and deliver, or look after a baby, and here is a miracle of the twins,” she told AFP by phone.

Namukwaya said she previously gave birth to a girl in 2020, after being mocked as “cursed woman” who had previously failed to produce a child.

She said her first husband had died in 1992, leaving her without children, and she met her current partner in 1996.

But Namukwaya voiced dismay that her partner has not visited her since she came to the hospital for the delivery.

“Maybe he is not happy that I delivered twins because men don’t want to know you are carrying more than one child in a womb for fear of may be responsibilities that come with that.”

Mamata Banerjee Requests Release Of Health Funds In 2-Page Letter To PM

Mamata Banerjee Requests Release Of Health Funds In 2-Page Letter To PM

Kolkata:

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to intervene to remove the colour branding conditionalities for health and wellness centres and release National Health Mission (NHM) funds to Bengal.

Withholding of funds by the Centre will deprive the poor of their health benefits, she said in her two-page letter to the prime minister.

“It is most unfortunate that very recently, I am informed that the Union ministry of health and family welfare has withheld fund release under the National Health Mission to West Bengal due to non-compliance with certain colour branding guidelines for health and wellness centres, despite other conditionalities being fulfilled. The withholding of fund release would adversely deprive the poor people of their benefit,” she wrote.

Ms Banerjee said currently there are around 11,000 functional health and wellness centres in the state which serve over three lakh people everyday. The buildings have been constructed since 2011 (when Trinamool came to power) in accordance with the colour branding in the state.

“I would earnestly request you to kindly intervene for the immediate release of NHM funds for West Bengal and for the removal of specific colour branding conditionalities for the health and wellness centres for the release of funds under the NHM so that poor people do not suffer from lack of quality health services,” Ms Banerjee added.

Central government’s terms and conditions have specified that the colour of the buildings of the health centres should be metallic yellow with a khaki border.

Government buildings in Bengal are mostly painted blue and white.

The Bengal Chief Minister also mentioned that her government “accords top priority to the welfare of its people with special emphasis on the poorer and marginalised section of its society”.

“In our endeavour, we are providing affordable, accessible and quality health care to all free of cost. There has been a significant increase in our budgetary allocation to health care in the last 12 years and many important public health initiatives such as the construction of super specialty hospitals, Swasthyasathi, Sishusathi, Matrima, Chokher Alo, etc., have been successfully launched in the last few years and a large number of people have benefitted,” she said.

She also mentioned that Bengal has been the front-runner in the implementation of different public health programmes under the NHM.

"Excellent Move", Says PM Modi After Defence Panel Clears Massive Deal

'Excellent Move', Says PM Modi After Defence Panel Clears Massive Deal

This will give a substantial boost to the Indian Defence Industry, PM Modi said.

New Delhi:

Applauding the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC)’s approval for capital acquisition proposals worth Rs 2.23 lakh crore to enhance the operational capabilities of the armed forces, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said this marks a crucial stride in the pursuit of self-sufficiency in the defence sector.

“Excellent move towards bolstering our Armed Forces’ operational prowess. The commitment to ‘Make in India’ in this decision marks a crucial stride in our pursuit of self-sufficiency in the Defence sector,” the Prime Minister posted from his official handle on X.

Earlier, on Thursday, the DAC, under the chairmanship of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, gave approval to Acceptance of Necessity (AoNs) for various capital acquisition proposals amounting to Rs 2.23 lakh crore.

Of the total, acquisition worth Rs 2.20 lakh crore (98 per cent) will be sourced from domestic industries.

“This will give a substantial boost to the Indian Defence Industry towards the aim of achieving the goal of ‘Aatmanirbharta’,” a defence ministry statement said.

The council accorded the AoN for procurement of two types of Anti-tank Munitions namely, Area Denial Munition (ADM) Type-2 and Type-3, which are capable of neutralising Tanks and Armoured personnel carriers and enemy personnel.

To replace the Indian Field Gun (IFG), which has completed its service life, AoN for procurement of a state-of-the-art Towed Gun System (TGS) has been granted which will become a mainstay of Artillery forces of the Indian Army.

The AoN was also accorded for 155 mm Nubless projectile for use in 155 mm Artillery guns which will enhance lethality and safety of the projectiles. All this equipment of the Indian Army will be procured under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category.

The AoN for procurement and integration of Automatic Target Tracker (ATT) and Digital Basaltic Computer (DBC) for T-90 Tanks under the Buy (India) category have also been accorded which will help in maintaining a combative edge of T-90 tanks over adversary platforms.

The AoN for procurement of Medium Range Anti-Ship Missiles (MRAShM) for surface platform of Indian Navy under Buy (Indian-IDDM) category has also been accorded. The MRAShM is envisaged as a lightweight Surface-to-Surface Missile which will be a primary offensive weapon onboard Indian Naval Ships.

In addition, the DAC accorded AoNs for procurement of Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) for Indian Air Force (IAF) and Indian Army and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk 1A for IAF from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) under Buy (Indian-IDDM) category. The AoNs have also been accorded by the DAC for upgradation of Su-30 MKI Aircraft indigenously from HAL.

While procurement of these equipment will provide enormous strength to the IAF, acquisition from domestic defence industries will take the indigenous capability to a new height. It will also reduce dependability on foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) substantiall

Fraud Cases In Supreme Court Tend To Increase As Polls Near: Chief Justice

Fraud Cases In Supreme Court Tend To Increase As Polls Near: Chief Justice

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud was speaking at a Constitution Day function. (File)

New Delhi:

The number of “fraud cases” in the Supreme Court tends to increase as elections draw closer and the court becomes a site for political engagement, Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud said on Thursday.

Speaking at the Constitution Day function organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) in the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Chandrachud said we all exist together and the Indian Constitution tells us that “we either survive or we perish together”.

“But above all, I think it is important that on a day where we celebrate the Constitution, we learn to discharge our duties to the cause of justice. Our duty to the cause of justice ranks much higher than the success or failure in individual cases,” he said.

“Just yesterday, I had to deal with a fraud case. The Supreme Court deals with fraud cases every day. Some courts have more than their share of fraud cases and there are some times as elections come, the number of fraud cases tends to increase in the court and we as judges realise it,” the CJI said.

Constitution Day is celebrated across the country on November 26 every year.

Chief Justice Chandrachud said after elections get over, things settle down and “as the polls come closer and closer, the court becomes a site for political engagement. That is a truth of our society. I am not looking at it with any value judgement”.

Chief Justice Chandrachud, who also addressed the gathering in Hindi for a few minutes, said freedom and the Constitution have an unbreakable relationship.

Speaking about the legal profession, the CJI said it is a profession of diversity, including diversity in terms of gender. He said be it the judges or lawyers, all have come from different parts of the country in search of a better livelihood.

“But in the process of giving each one of us a better livelihood, we are also engaged in providing a better existence to our fellow citizens. That is the big power which all of you command as lawyers,” he said.

Referring to the attire of judges and lawyers, the CJI said it reminds us that the “similarity of our attire is a symbol of the common existence which we share”. It was for the members of the Bar to make the legal profession broad-based and inclusive, Chief Justice Chandrachud said while highlighting the need to encourage young lawyers.

“And remember, ultimately, it is if you support the institution of justice, which is to ensure that you support the independence of your own judiciary, that the judiciary can truly be able to discharge its duties,” he said.

“If you are not giving to the judiciary its own sense of due, how will you expect them to discharge their own obligations towards society. Because your judges come from you and they return to you. They are not distinct from you,” he said.

He said members of the Bar are also here for the betterment of the profession, to serve the cause of justice and to ensure that the other side of the profession, the judges, who are duty bound to act in aid of justice, continue to do so.

“You have to not merely protect your judges, but you have to hold them to account as well,” he said.

Sharing a story, Chief Justice Chandrachud said sometime back, one of his colleagues had an attack of dengue and there was a need for blood transfusion.

“But we drew on the credit of the blood which was given by our employees during the last blood donation camp…my colleague came back to normalcy very quickly by the blood transfusion,” he said, adding this was again a reminder that all of us are bound together in this cycle of existence.

“None of us in that sense is different from the other. None of us stands alone,” Chief Justice Chandrachud said.

Not Gill, RCB Great Feels This Veteran Could've Replaced GT Skipper Pandya

Shubman Gill will don a new hat at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Already an important member of the Gujarat Titans franchise, Shubman Gill has been named as the new captain of the former IPL champions. It is a major responsibility. South Africa great and former Royal Challengers Bangalore star AB de Villiers feels that while it would be exciting  to see Shubman Gill lead GT, another veteran star could have been given the opportunity to lead the franchise for IPL 2024.

“Not that I doubt Shubman’s skill or ability as a leader but the minute I saw Kane Williamson‘s name as a retained player (in GT), I thought there was a fantastic opportunity to give an experienced player who has done it before, player with a rock-solid role up the order, an opportunity to captain for you. Give Shubman Gill the opportunity, just to cement himself in all the formats in Indian cricket and just to have another good season at the IPL,” De Villiers said on his YouTube channel.

“But no, they decided to throw him in as captain. It may pay off; I am not saying it is wrong. I am saying that it was a great opportunity for Shubman just to learn a little bit and know that the plan is for him to be captain in 2025. Nonetheless, I am excited to watch him perform and lead from the front.”

It will be Gill’s maiden outing as captain of an IPL side, having begun his journey in the competition in 2018 with Kolkata Knight Riders before heading to GT in 2022.

“We all know captainship comes with a lot of things, and commitment is one of them. Discipline is one of them. Hard work is one of them. Loyalty is one of them,” said Gill in a video posted by the franchise on social media.

“And, because, I think I’ve played under great leaders and I’ve learned a lot from them, I think those learnings that I have had from their experience playing under them is gonna help me a lot in this IPL.” Gill added that there was no dearth of experienced players in Gujarat Titans, and he would get to learn a lot from leaders such as New Zealand’s Kane Williamson and Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan.

“We have great leaders in our team, be it Kane (Williamson) or be it Rashid (Khan) or be it (Mohammed) Shami, or even David (Miller), or even Wriddhi (Saha). So, I think it’s gonna be great.

“And obviously, there are gonna be a lot of learnings along the way, which would be my experience as a captain. And I see a lot of people making great memories,” he added.

As far as playing the leadership role is concerned, Gill was the India U-19 vice-captain during the 2018 World Cup. He was also named skipper of India Blue during the 2019-20 Duleep Trophy, the India C captain in the Deodhar Trophy the same season, and the India-A leader during the New Zealand tour later in 2019.

Activists of the BJP and BSP staged a sit-in in front of polling station number 90 near the Government Primary School (Girls) in the town, alleging that BRS had rigged votes. The BJP withdrew the protest when party candidate Dr Harish Rao brought the issue to the notice of officials concerned.

However, BSP activists led by State president Dr RS Praveen Kumar continued their sit-in at the polling station. They exchanged heated arguments and raised slogans criticising the BRS. The two groups pelted stones and slippers against each other, resulting in tension. Policemen who were present at the spot resorted to lathi-charge to bring the situation under control.

Karimnagar Vigilance DSP Srinivas Rao, Kaghaznagar Town Sub-Inspector Ganganna and constable Rathnakar reported injuries. Additional SP Acheshwar Rao reached the spot.
