'Technological Revolution Being Led Mainly By India': Commonwealth Chief

India is producing more unicorns than almost any other country, said Patricia Scotland

Dubai:

Lauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland has said that he has been a really important leader because of his innovation and creativity, as India is producing more unicorns than almost any other country. She added that this has happened because of an ecosystem that supports innovation.

While speaking to ANI, the Commonwealth Secretary General said, “He (PM Modi) has been a really important leader because of innovation and creativity. If you look at what India is doing, it’s producing more unicorns than almost any other country. And many of those new innovations are focused on our delivery. So this creation of an ecosystem that supports innovation, which is what Prime Minister Modi has done, is critically important.”

“I’ve said before that human genius got us into this mess. This is how we came up with the Industrial Revolution. Now there is a technological revolution, and it’s being led, in the main, by India and a number of other countries. So his contribution to that, particularly in relation to women, is critically important,” she said.

On India’s role in tackling climate change, she underlined that New Delhi has a vital role to play as it has become a technological giant and this is an opportunity to use the data that is available.

She said, “India has a vital role to play. India has become a technological giant and this is an opportunity for us to use the data we have, the geospatial data, to enable us to respond better to the exogenous shocks to which we are subject, particularly the climate crisis. So I know that the whole Commonwealth is grateful for what India did during COVID because it was able to come up with some of the solutions in terms of distribution. And we’re looking to India again to do that leadership role. And we know that if we share data, if we share knowledge about what works, what doesn’t work, then we’ll really get there faster. So green energy is pivotal. India is leading the way, along with a number of other countries, and we really want her to continue to do that and help the rest of the Commonwealth family.”

Calling India’s G20 Presidency “phenomenal,” she said that it is about time to talk about the G-21, adding, “Because of what India has done, Africa is now represented in the G-20, an incredibly important step forward.”

“India has been innovative, creative, but most importantly, inclusive. And that inclusivity–taking together the diversity of our world and making sure that we all have a platform from which we can be truly heard–is critically important. I think everyone will be congratulating India, congratulating Prime Minister Modi for a phenomenal presidency of the G-20. So well done, India. And I can’t help but mention India got to the south side of the moon, and it was led by a woman,” she told ANI.

When asked whether the Russia-Ukraine war and Israel-Hamas conflict will have any impact on COP 28, Scotland stated, “Well, I hope it will make us concentrate even more, because if we have no world, then the conflicts become contextualised. We are talking about an existential threat–a global threat. We have to save our world, and we have to save ourselves from conflict.”

She further went on to say that “financing” is high up on the agenda during this year’s COP28 climate talks that are taking place in Dubai.

“Well, what’s absolutely on the agenda is the financing, because, you know, way back in 2009, the world committed to producing USD 100 billion, which is particularly important to those small and developing countries that are the worst affected by climate change. So I hope we will deliver on our financial obligations,” she said.

“We know that it’s going to take about USD 4 trillion a year in order to meet the 2030 agenda and the Paris Agenda, but right now, we only have 630 billion dollars, so we’re nowhere near the target…So we need to get serious about the money we need and make sure those who are really in need get it,” she added.

COP28, which stands for the 28th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), is taking place in Dubai, UAE, from November 30 – December 12 this year.

Delegates from almost 200 nations will be present at the summit, including world leaders like Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will arrive in Dubai later today. PM Modi had earlier attended the Glasgow conference in 2021, during which he unveiled India’s five-pronged ‘Panchamrit’ strategy to deal with climate change.

During COP-26 in Glasgow, the Prime Minister announced five specific targets, titled “Panchamrit,” as India’s unprecedented contribution to climate action.

The Prime Minister had also announced Mission Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) on that occasion.

BJP, Congress Brush Off Exit Poll Results, Forward 'Winning' Arguments

BJP, Congress Brush Off Exit Poll Results, Forward 'Winning' Arguments

Exit polls 2023: Madhya Pradesh could be heading for a close fight.

New Delhi:

Exit polls that predicted a primacy of Congress in Chhattisgarh and Telangana and that of the BJP in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, have been hotly contested by both camps in states they were predicted to lose. While exit polls are known to get it wrong many a time, their predictions proved a touchy topic in this round of elections, seen as the semi-finals before next year’s Lok Sabha polls.

While the BJP doubled down on claims that they will win Madhya Pradesh, where many exit polls predicted a close fight, the Congress scoffed at the suggestion that they might not have a re-run of the 2018 victory. The party’s government had collapsed two years later as its senior leader Jyotiraditya Scindia crossed over to the BJP with 20-plus MLAs.

Former Chief Minister Kamal Nath, who is helming the state Congress in Madhya Pradesh, declared that the country is run by “vision, not television”.

“Exit poll results are very diverse. We cannot say anything about it. I can assure you that the Congress will get more than 130 seats in Madhya Pradesh,” said his party colleague Digvijaya Singh. “People want transformation. People are fed up with CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan,” he added.

NDTV poll of Polls, an aggregate of nine exit polls, indicates that the BJP may wind up with 124 of the state’s 230 seats, where the majority mark is 116. The Congress may get 102 seats.

A similar script played out in neighbouring Chhattisgarh – only in the BJP camp — after almost all exit polls gave the Congress government led by Bhupesh Baghel an edge. NDTV Poll of Polls – an aggregate of nine exit polls — indicated that 49 of the state’s 90 seats can go to the Congress and 38 to the BJP.

“Exit polls have a limited size. The sample size of the BJP is huge,” state BJP chief Arun Sao was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

“I have been roaming in Chhattisgarh for the past 1.5 years. I have gone to each Vidhan Sabha constituency and had conversations with people. On that basis, I can say that on December 3, the BJP will come to power with a clear majority,” he added.

“Everyone can have their way with exit polls. The BJP will form the government. The reason for this is that people want change,” said the BJP’s Prem Prakash Pandey.

The claims and counterclaims were also strong in Rajasthan, where exit polls predicted the state will remain faithful to its revolving-door tradition and vote out the ruling Congress.

“Exit polls indicate that ‘raaj nahi rivaz’ (trend, not rule) is set to change in Rajasthan as the Congress is going to win a majority,” said Gourav Vallabh, spokesperson of the Congress which is hoping to buck the trend.

Banking on a marginally higher polling figure, the BJP, meanwhile, insisted that the people of Rajasthan want to end the Congress rule.

“The people of Rajasthan want freedom from the Congress, given their record of corruption. The BJP is going to form the government with a majority in Rajasthan as well as Madhya Pradesh,” said BJP MP Baba Balaknath, who is the party candidate from the Tijara assembly constituency.

NDTV Poll of Polls indicated that the BJP can get 104 of the state’s 200 seats, the Congress 85.

Editorial: Himalayan quandary

It is in the national interest that there should be an environmental audit of all the ongoing big projects in the Himalayas

The entire nation heaved a sigh of relief after 41 workers were safely pulled out of a collapsed tunnel in Uttarakhand in a challenging rescue operation that lasted 17 days. While the evacuation exercise will be remembered for the grit, determination and combined sense of purpose shown by all those involved in it, the incident once again brought into focus the fragility of the Himalayan region and how indiscriminate execution of developmental projects has been playing havoc with the environment. The Himalayan ecosystem is one of the most fragile in the world, sensitive even to the slightest alterations. It is critical to draw lessons from the collapse of an under-construction Silkyara tunnel and improve safety measures. More importantly, it is time to reassess the development model of the Himalayan region, especially mega and hydroelectric projects. The Himalayas are a major site of climate crisis-triggered disasters, with glaciers receding and unusual rainfall patterns emerging. After a prolonged suspense-filled wait, marked by alternating moments of hope and despair, the rescue teams could finally extricate the trapped workers. A detailed probe is needed to figure out what went wrong with the tunnelling work which is part of the 880-km Char Dham highway project. The most glaring omission was the failure to build an escape passage for the benefit of workers during the construction period, as stipulated in the original cabinet approval. Lessons should be learnt from the Silkyara nightmare and there must be no delay in initiating remedial action. There are allegations that construction works had been deliberately designed with the intent to bypass environmental impact assessment, which meant there was no disaster management plan in place.

Much of the construction of the mountain highways is subcontracted to private firms which work on tight deadlines and budgets. Whether it is land subsidence at Joshimath, the gateway to Badrinath pilgrimage, or frequent landslides and flash floods in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, the Himalayan region is highly vulnerable and unpredictable. It is in the national interest that there should be an environmental audit of all the ongoing big projects in the Himalayas. Projects like Char Dham Road have made an already fragile landscape even more vulnerable to disasters. The ambitious project seeks to build wide, all-weather roads between the Hindu holy towns of Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath. There are allegations that the Centre, in a hurry to finish the project before the next general elections, had split the project into 53 separate sections, each less than 100 km in length, to evade the need for an environmental impact assessment. Since the start of tunnel driving, the geological conditions have proved to be more challenging than predicted in the tender documents. As Uttarakhand is gearing up for several such projects in the coming years, the Silkyara incident raises concerns about the potential risks to human lives.

Delhi Didn't Keep Promise To Retain Me In IPL: Ade Villiers Recalls Snub

One of the greatest batters of modern era, AB de Villiers has revealed that he was snubbed by erstwhile Delhi Daredevils after spending three seasons at the IPL franchise. Before making it big at the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the South African batting legend had three lukewarm season with the Delhi franchise, now known as Delhi Capitals. But in a team meeting, also attended by explosive Australian opener David Warner, de Villiers was told that he was going to be “retained” but it happened otherwise as the franchise released him before the 2011 auction.

Recalling the incident in his YouTube channel, ‘AB de Villiers 360′, the former South African skipper said: “When I played in the 2010 season, I got called into the office and was told ‘you are going to get retained, young AB de Villiers’.” “I sat alongside David Warner in that meeting. It came as a huge surprise to me a week or two later when I realised I had been released.

“So the communication wasn’t great back in the day, that must be different these days but it’s not a nice feeling,” De Villiers added.

The 39-year-old said it was a huge blow and he was very nervous before the auction.

“You’re unsure of your career, at that time in 2010 I think I only played five games in that IPL season so a lot of doubts crept up in my mind.

“But I did have a very good international season. I kept playing good cricket and luckily for me the auction happened and I got picked up by RCB, and it changed my life forever, so great memories with regards to that.

“I was so nervous. Then I got the news from Twitter that I was picked by RCB and the next moment Virat (Kohli) called.” De Villiers went on to mesmerise the Indian fans with his stroke-making and formed a dream combination with star batter Kohli at the top of the order for 11 seasons.

De Villiers said the released players should not feel disappointed as it’s not the “end of the road”.

“For all the released players, it’s not the end of the road, keep a close eye on the auction. But if you’re not picked up, it gives an opportunity to go back to the drawing board and work even harder,” he added.

Iran’s president skips Dubai summit due to Israeli attendance

Iran’s President Ebrahim Raeisi will not attend the UN’s COP28 climate summit in Dubai because of the presence of Israeli president Isaac Herzog, official news agency IRNA says.

President Raeisi had been invited to the summit during UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s meeting with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdullahian on the sidelines of the Friends of BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting in Cape Town in June.

“Due to the invitation of the officials of the Zionist regime to attend the United Nations climate change meeting, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran is not participating” in the event, IRNA said on Thursday.

Minister of Energy Ali Akbar Mehrabian had instead left for the United Arab Emirates to outline Iran’s position on the ways to deal with air pollutants, it added.

Earlier Thursday, Amir-Abdollahian expressed Iran’s thanks for the UAE president’s invitation in a phone conversation with Sheikh Abdullah, during which he explained Iran’s reservations about the presence of Israeli officials.

“While understanding the UN’s COP28 climate summit being held under the chairmanship of the UAE, the presence of the authorities of the occupying regime of Israel in the meeting is worthy of serious consideration in view of the recent war crimes and genocide of the Zionist regime,” he said.

An Israeli delegation of 28 officials will attend this year’s annual United Nations climate summit COP28, which kicked off Thursday. It is reportedly down from the 1,000-strong group the foreign ministry had originally planned to send, including Herzog and hardline prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Amir-Abdollahian touched on the temporary ceasefire in Gaza, saying “the Islamic countries must continue their efforts to completely stop the war crimes of the Zionist regime and open wide routes for sending humanitarian aid to Gaza”.

The Iranian foreign minister also said the UN Security Council is expected to fulfill its duties towards the Palestinian people by issuing an effective resolution.

Sheikh Abdullah explained his country’s efforts to establish a ceasefire, saying the UAE will make every effort to continue the truce and step up the sending of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Brazil Set To Join OPEC From Next Year

Brazil Set To Join OPEC From Next Year

Recently, OPEC+ members have announced voluntary cuts to boost prices. (Representational)

Vienna, Austria:

Major producer Brazil will join OPEC+ from next year, the oil cartel announced on Thursday.

Brazil is among the world’s top 10 producers and has been the largest oil producer in Latin America since 2016.

Its crude production hit a record 3.7 million barrels per day in September, a near 17 percent increase from the same month last year and a 6.1 percent hike from August, according to pricing agency Argus Media.

Ministers of the 13-member Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) headed by Saudi Arabia and its 10 partners led by Russia were meeting to discuss further output cuts to boost prices.

“The meeting welcomed Alexandre Silveira de Oliveira, Minister of Mines and Energy of the Federative Republic of Brazil, which will join the OPEC+… starting January 2024,” OPEC said in a press release.

OPEC+ was born in late 2016 when Russia and nine others joined forces with the Saudi-led OPEC to prop up falling prices.

“Considering that Brazil is a large oil producer and is driving oil production growth it is important to have them on board, but it seems that they are not cutting production like Mexico, so would conclude with: good for OPEC+, less relevant for oil market balances,” UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo said.

The 23-member OPEC+ is a motley crew of countries: Saudi Arabia and Iran are bitter rivals, South Sudan and Libya have been wracked by civil wars and others such as Venezuela are mired in economic crises.

The cartel faced its biggest crisis in 2020 as countries locked down due to the Covid pandemic, sending oil demand plunging.

The group agreed in April 2020 to slash output by 9.7 million barrels per day in order to boost sagging prices.

It began to raise production again in 2021 as the market improved.

In the most recent meetings amid plunging prices, OPEC+ members have announced voluntary cuts to boost prices.

Since the end of 2022, the alliance has implemented supply cuts of about five million barrels per day (bpd) with Saudi Arabia taking the lead.
