Billionaire investor issues dire warning for American economy

American billionaire investor Ray Dalio has issued a dire warning about the “risky” situation of the US economy, saying the country’s growth is at risk of falling to zero.

“We’re going to have a debt crisis in this country,” the 74-year-old founder of the world’s largest hedge fund, Bridgewater Associates, warned Americans on CNBC in an interview that aired on Thursday.

“I think you’re going to get a meaningful slowing of the economy,” he said, citing America’s record $33 trillion of debt as being “risky”.

“How fast it transpires, I think, is going to be a function of that supply-demand issue, so I’m watching that very closely,” he added.

The veteran investor said the huge imbalance between the massive scale of public borrowing and insufficient demand for government bonds is a major factor in the looming economic collapse.

Dalio has previously flagged America’s financial challenges —a historic debt pile, higher interest rates, and quantitative tightening — as well as tarnished international relations with Russia and China, as a “perfect storm” for the US economy.

He has also sounded the alarm that high debt levels could spark a “balance sheet recession,” where growth stops because people and companies focus on paying off their debts rather than investing in expansion.

In this regard, some economists have forecast worse predictions, where they’ve predicted stocks and house prices will collapse, and a full-blown recession will take place.

The economists’ concerns have mounted since the US inflation rate hit 40-year highs last year, prompting the Federal Reserve to hike interest rates from almost zero to over 5 percent.

American credit rating agency Fitch, in August, slashed US credit rating, citing fiscal deterioration over the next three years and unresolved debt-ceiling dispute.

Moody’s rating agency, earlier this week, warned that a possible government shutdown next week would mount added pressure on US credit ratings.

US hardline Republicans in the House have disputed a deal the Republican-led House negotiated with the Democratic president Joe Biden for $1.59 trillion in discretionary spending in fiscal 2024, paving the way for large portions of the government to shut down on Sunday.

Biden said this week that the shutdown would hit Black Americans disproportionately hard, including by reducing nutritional benefits, cutting inspections of hazardous waste sites and lack of enforcement of fair housing laws.

Economists, analysts and government experts predict that everything from childcare funding and economic data releases to food benefits may be suspended beginning on Sunday, and some 2.2mn government workers may be furloughed or forced to work without pay.

The Census Bureau reckons out of the 333mn US population, about 41mn people live at or below the poverty line, which is set at close to $30k for a 4-member family household.

Terrorists will never succeed in destroying Turkey’s peace: Erdogan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has reiterated that Turkey will continue its fight against terrorism, saying the terrorists who attempt to disrupt peace and security in the country will never succeed.

Erdogan made the remarks in his opening speech to the new legislative year of the Parliament on Sunday, after an explosion near Turkey’s parliament in Ankara left two police officers injured earlier in the day.

“We have largely solved the separatist terrorism issue, which has made our country pay heavy human and economic costs for 40 years, within our borders,” he said while stressing the need for solidarity in the fight against terrorism.

“We will not allow the terrorist group to direct politics or prevent the sacred march of our country,” he added.

Erdogan further reiterated that Turkey will continue to fight terrorism with determination until the last terrorist at home or abroad is eliminated.

He also hailed the timely intervention of the police during Sunday’s attack which he said was a “final flutters of terrorism,” noting that the burden of instilling morale in terror groups with political calculations will be very heavy.

On Sunday, Turkish media reported that a loud explosion was heard near the parliament and ministerial buildings, and broadcasters showed footage of debris scattered on a street near the interior ministry. Some reports said the explosion was followed by gunfire.

One of the terrorists died in the explosion and the other was “neutralized” by authorities there. Two police officers were “slightly injured” in the fire caused by the blast.

The injured police officers are still being treated, and their injuries are not life-threatening, according to the Turkish interior minister.

Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation into the terrorist attack.

The outlawed Kurdistan’s Workers; Party (PKK) has accepted responsibility for the terrorist attack in Ankara, according to a news website close to the group.

The bombing, the first to hit Ankara in a number of years, comes almost a year after six people were killed and 81 wounded in an explosion in a busy pedestrian street in central Istanbul on Nov 13, 2022.

"Pakistan Are Now Getting A Habit Of Losing": Ramiz Blasts Babar And Co

Former Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ramiz Raja was extremely critical of the Pakistan cricket team after they went down fighting against New Zealand in the Cricket World Cup 2023 warm-up match. The Babar Azam-led side scored 345 with the help of a century from Mohammed Rizwan and a gritty 80 from the skipper. However, that was not enough as New Zealand were able to chase it down with 6.2 overs to spare. Raja said that Pakistan are getting a habit of losing and pointed out that if the bowlers fail to perform on the big stage, the team will have to score more than 400 runs.

“I know it was just a practice game, but a win is a win. And winning becomes a habit. But I feel Pakistan are now getting a habit of losing. First they lost in Asia Cup, and now here. Pakistan scored 345 and it was a great run-chase. If these are the pitches – and you will get such pitches in India – you will have to score 400 if your bowling keeps misfiring like this. You will have to change your tactics, take risks. And we don’t do that. We play defensively for first 10-15 overs and then shift gears,” he told reporters.

Rachin Ravindra and returning Kane Williamson played key knocks as New Zealand chased down 345 to thrash Pakistan by five wickets in a World Cup warm-up match on Friday.

Chasing 346 for victory, New Zealand lost an early wicket before Ravindra (97) and Williamson (54) put on 137 to put their team on course and they achieved the target with 6.2 overs to spare in Hyderabad.

Mohammed Rizwan hit 103 and Babar Azam made 80 in Pakistan’s 345-5 after electing to bat first but the Kiwi batsmen made the total look easy against an attack missing pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Williamson, who returned from a six-month lay-off due to his knee injury and played the match only as a batsman, looked impressive in his 50-ball stay before he retired out.

"Hope For Justice Died With Him": Russians Hail Mercenery Group Chief

'Hope For Justice Died With Him': Russians Hail Mercenery Group Chief Prigozhin

Mourners spoke of respect for Yevgeny Prigozhin

Moscow:

At memorials to Yevgeny Prigozhin, who was killed in an unexplained plane crash exactly 40 days ago, dozens of mourners hailed the mutinous mercenary chief as a patriotic hero of Russia who had spoken truth to power.

The private Embraer jet on which Prigozhin was travelling to St. Petersburg crashed north of Moscow killing all 10 people on board on Aug. 23, including two other top Wagner figures, Prigozhin’s four bodyguards, and a crew of three.

It is still unclear what caused the plane to crash two months to the day since Prigozhin’s failed mutiny. The Kremlin said on Aug. 30 that investigators were considering the possibility that the plane was downed on purpose.

At his grave in the former imperial capital of St. Petersburg, his mother, Violetta, and his son, Pavel, laid flowers. Supporters waved the black flags of Wagner which sport a skull and the motto “Blood, Honour, Motherland, Courage”.

In Eastern Orthodoxy, it is believed that the soul makes its final journey to either heaven or hell on the 40th day after death.

At memorials in Moscow and other Russian cities, dozens of Wagner fighters and ordinary Russians paid their respects, though there was no mass outpouring of grief. Russian state television was silent.

“He can be criticized for certain events, but he was a patriot who defended the motherland’s interests on different continents,” Wagner’s recruitment arm said in a statement on Telegram.

“He was charismatic and importantly he was close to the fighters and to the people. And that’s why he became popular both in Russia and abroad,” it said.

Prigozhin’s mutiny posed the biggest challenge to President Vladimir Putin’s rule since the former KGB spy rose to power in 1999. Western diplomats say it exposed the strains on Russia of the war in Ukraine.

“Leader”

After months of insulting Putin’s top brass with a variety of crude expletives and prison slang over their perceived failure to fight the Ukraine war properly, Prigozhin took control of the southern city of Rostov in late June.

His fighters shot down a number of Russian aircraft, killing their pilots, and advanced towards Moscow before turning back 200 km (125 miles) from the capital.

Putin initially cast Prigozhin as a traitor whose mutiny could have tipped Russia into civil war, though he later made a deal with him to defuse the crisis.

Mourners spoke of respect for Prigozhin.

“He was a real authority, a leader,” Mikhail, a serviceman in Russia’s armed forces who refused to give his second name, told Reuters.

Moscow resident Marta, who also refused to give her surname, said the people believed in Prigozhin but that Wagner had been “decapitated” by the deaths of him and co-founder Dmitry Utkin.

“Hope for justice died with him,” she said. “People believed in him.”

Pro-Wagner groups posted a video of Prigozhin flying to Mali where, after a thunderstorm, he met a senior commander known by his call sign “Lotus” – Anton Yelizarov – who is now reported to be leading the group.

Opponents such as the United States cast Wagner as a brutal crime group that plundered African states and meted out sledgehammer deaths to those who challenged it.

Putin was on Friday shown meeting one of the most senior former commanders of the Wagner mercenary group and discussing how best to use “volunteer units” in the Ukraine war.

Iran: Any geopolitical change fuels regional instability, crisis

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Akbar Ahmadian says any change in the geopolitics of the region will cause insecurity and instability and escalate crisis.

In a Sunday meeting with Armen Grigoryan, the secretary of the National Security Council of Armenia, in Tehran, Ahmadian pointed to the latest developments in the Caucasus region and urged all parties to help establish peace and security in the region.

Nagorno-Karabakh is a landlocked region in the Caucasus and lies within Azerbaijan’s borders.

The region has always been internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan though it is mostly populated by ethnic Armenians, who have resisted Azerbaijan’s sovereignty over the territory.

Last week, Azerbaijan launched an operation designed to seize control of the breakaway territory and perhaps end a three-decade-old conflict.

The operation ended on September 20, after the Azerbaijani military routed Armenian forces in 24 hours and made the separatists agree to lay down weapons, under a Russian-mediated ceasefire.

Ahmadian reaffirmed Iran’s principled and unchanging policy on developing cooperation and interaction with the neighboring states and creating a region free of conflict.

“Frank and constructive dialogue among regional countries will prepare the ground for [improving] sustainable security, balanced development and prosperity of the nations in the region,” the SNSC secretary said.

Ahmadian voiced Iran’s readiness to arrange a meeting among the regional states.

He placed a premium on increasing economic cooperation and joint commercial exchanges between Iran and Armenia and said Tehran is keen to boost relations with Yerevan in all sectors.

Grigoryan, for his part, said Iran and Armenia enjoy deep-rooted relations and voiced Yerevan’s readiness to enhance comprehensive relations with Tehran.

The Armenian security chief hailed Iran’s effective role in establishing peace and stability in the Caucasus region and called on Tehran to proceed with its efforts in this regard. He highlighted the significance of the economic, commercial and industrial projects between the two countries.

New Delhi:

The Congress on Sunday appointed its senior leader Ajay Maken as the new treasurer, replacing Pawan Kumar Bansal.

Ajay Maken is considered a close confidant of Rahul Gandhi and was without any post ever since he resigned as Congress general secretary in charge of Rajasthan a few months ago.

“The Congress president has appointed Ajay Maken as the treasurer of the All India Congress Committee, with immediate effect,” party general secretary K C Venugopal said in a statement.

“The party appreciates the contribution of the outgoing treasurer Pawan Kumar Bansal,” the statement further said.

Sources add that Mr Bansal, who was a permanent invitee to the CWC prior to his appointment as treasurer, was again made a permanent invitee by Kharge while equating him with many juniors in the party.

They add that the office of treasurer was “undermined” in the working committee, the highest decision-making body of the grand old party, while appointing him as a permanent invitee to the CWC.

Mr Bansal was appointed as interim treasurer after the demise of Ahmed Patel. He held the position for almost three years.

Ajay Maken thanked the Congress leadership for his new assignment and said he would perform his new role with honesty and dedication as a custodian of their contributions.

In a post on social media site X, he said, “I am currently in Raipur attending the screening committee meeting. I have been informed of my appointment as the treasurer of Congress. This is indeed a significant responsibility.” “I wish to extend my gratitude to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former Congress presidents Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, and general secretary, organisation, K C Venugopal for placing their trust in me.

“I assure both my leaders and the workers of our party that as a custodian of their contributions, I will work with the utmost diligence, honesty, and dedication,” Ajay Maken added.

Iran among five countries producing genetic kits in world

Iran is among the five countries producing genetic kits across the world despite US-led sanctions hampering the Islamic Republic’s efforts to acquire the state-of-the-art medical technology, a senior Iranian health official says.

Masoud Qadi-Pasha, the vice president of the Iranian Forensic Medicine Organization’s laboratory department, made the statement on Sunday as he pointed to cruel sanctions by the West that prevented Iran from importing genetic kits and the Islamic Republic’s long-time efforts to become self-sufficient in the high-tech field.

“We used to be an importer of genetic kits that would not enter the country due to the West’s brutal sanctions,” Qadi-Pasha said. “With the policy of the [Iranian] Judiciary and Forensic Medicine… all genetic kits are produced in the organization, which has made Iran recognized as one of the five countries producing genetic kits in the world.”

Stressing that the quality of Iranian kits outmatches that of foreign genetic kits in some items, the officials said, “Today, we have been exempted from exporting 70% of consumables in the genetics sector, and we are trying to produce 30% of the imported items by the end of the year, and to have exports soon after self-sufficiency.”

Qadi-Pasha also pointed to Forensic Medicine Organization’s policy of being up-to-date in scientific fields, saying toxicology laboratories are active in 31 Iranian provinces and two other provinces will soon complete their toxicology labs.

Heidar Mohammadi, the head of Iran’s Food and Drug Administration, hailed on Friday the country’s progress in the fields of medical science and pharmaceutical industry despite the sanctions, announcing the export of Iranian-developed medicines to 40 countries across the world.

Mohammadi, who is also the deputy minister of health, said a threefold increase in the export of Iranian pharmaceuticals bespeaks the country’s good interaction with the neighboring countries.

Iranian authorities have repeatedly blamed the sanctions for a shortage of medicines that treat special diseases such as cancer.

Health experts have warned that the harm caused by the sanctions on Iran’s access to medicine supplies may get worse.

That comes as the Iranian government has tried to circumvent the sanctions and import the drugs from suppliers that normally charge exorbitant prices. The scarcity has prompted the Iranian medical experts to depend on the country’s domestic capacities and wean the Islamic Republic from importing health products by manufacturing indigenous ones.

TDP-JSP will form next government in Andhra Pradesh: Pawan Kalyan

Amaravati: Jana Sena Party (JSP) leader and actor Pawan Kalyan exuded confidence that the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and his party will form the next government in Andhra Pradesh.

Addressing a public meeting at Avanigadda on Sunday as part of fourth leg of his Varahi yatra, Pawan Kalyan said that the defeat of Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) is a foregone conclusion.

This was the first public meeting by the actor politician after he announced that JSP will contest coming assembly elections in alliance with the TDP. Kalyan, who is an ally of the BJP, had made the announcement after meeting TDP supremo and former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in Rajahmundry Central Jail.

He had hoped that BJP will also join them. Referring to the YSRCP’s target of winning all 175 assembly seats, the JSP leader said that it will not win more than 15 seats.

He said it was in the state’s interests that he was trying to avoid a split of anti-YSRCP votes. The actor-politician said he was never interested in money and land. He claimed that with moral courage, he was fighting the more powerful Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Stating that his party suffered many setbacks in the last 10 years, the JSP leader said he was running the party for values. He also stated that if he gets the post of the Chief Minister or even a bigger post, he was ready to accept it.

He, however, made it clear that he was not desperate for power but wanted to work for the betterment of people and for a good future of the state. The JSP leader said if Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy was a good ruler, there was no need for him to come out on streets. Referring to the problems of the unemployed, he said the Jagan government has failed to conduct exams for recruitment of teachers. He promised that he would solve their problems.
