Jason Cummings struck a brace as Mohun Bagan Super Giant defeated Maziya Sports & Recreation Club of Maldives 2-1 to consolidate their top-spot at the top of Group D standings in the AFC Cup on Monday. The Australian A-League winners scored in the 28th and 90 2nd minutes, while the Maldives Super Cup winners pulled one back through Tomoki Wada (45th). Hugo Boumous set it up for Cummings to score the first goal that hit the woodwork before finding the back of the net. Maziya equalised just before the break when Wada’s powerful shot beat Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith before flying to the top corner. Sahal Abdul Samad crossed the ball to an onrushing Cummings who nutmegged Maziya goalkeeper to seal three points.

This was the Mariners second win from as many matches as they went three points clear of Maziya at the top of the table.

The reigning Indian Super League champions next face Bashundhara Kings of Bangladesh at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on October 24.

Two-time Inter-zonal semifinalists Mohun Bagan had blanked Super Cup champions Odisha FC 4-0 in their previous AFC Cup outing.

Hyderabad: Actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan‘s JanaSena Party on Monday announced that it will contest 32 seats in the upcoming assembly elections in Telangana.

The JanaSena is a major political party in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, and according to party leaders, it will be contesting a majority of the seats located in and around Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits and Khammam district.

The elections for the 119 assembly assembly elections are slated to be held later this year. The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), previously known as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has been in power in the state ever since its formation in 2014. Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had on August announced the names of its candidates for 115 constituencies.

Moab: Multiple people died in a plane crash outside the eastern Utah tourist town of Moab, authorities said on Monday.

The plane crashed on Sunday evening shortly after taking off from Canyonlands Airfield about 15 miles (24 kilometers) north of Moab, according to a Grand County Sheriff’s Department statement posted on Facebook.

The sheriff’s office said all four people on board the plane were killed, but the Federal Aviation Administration reports that three people died and one person had serious injuries.

According to an FAA report on recent crashes, the single-engine Piper plane has the same tail number as a plane registered to North Dakota state Senator Doug Larsen of Mandan. The addresses on the plane registration and the address of the senator match. It was not immediately known if Larsen was on board.

The crash was being investigated, the National Transportation Safety Board said in a post on X, the social media website formerly called Twitter.

A phone message left with sheriff’s officials seeking additional information wasn’t immediately returned Monday.

Moab is a tourism-centered community of about 5,300 people near Arches and Canyonlands national parks.

Cheteshwar Pujara was dismissed cheaply as Rest of India spinners shared bulk of the spoils restricting Saurashtra to 212 for 9 on the second day of the Irani Cup

Rajkot: Cheteshwar Pujara was dismissed cheaply as Rest of India spinners shared bulk of the spoils restricting Saurashtra to 212 for 9 on the second day of the Irani Cup here on Monday.

This was after Rest of India were bowled out for 308 in their first innings, courtesy left-arm spinner Parth Bhut’s 5 for 94.

While Karnataka seamer Vidwath Kaverappa (3/28 in 9 overs) inflicted the initial damage, left-arm spinners Saurabh Kumar (3/64 in 25 overs) and Shams Mulani (2/46 in 21 overs) extracted the turn and bounce on offer to trouble the home team batters.

However, the most important wicket was taken by off-spinner Pulkit Narang (1/56 in 21 overs) as he dismissed Pujara (29 off 81 balls) to put Saurashtra on the backfoot.

The stodgy southpaw Arpit Vasavada’s (54 off 127 balls) half-century was the only saving grace in an otherwise poor batting performance.

Pujara, who hit three of his four boundaries against spinners, got one delivery from Narang, which bounced a tad more as he tried to play a forward defensive stroke. The resultant easy bat-pad catch was gobbled by Yash Dhull standing at forward short-leg for that exact dismissal.

Before Pujara’s dismissal, Kaverappa bowled perfectly pitched up deliveries to square up openers Harvik Desai (0) and Chirag Jani (2). While Harvik was snapped in the slips to a delivery that shaped away, Jani got one that sort of came in and held its line.

In the second and third session, it was Saurabh and Mulani, who didn’t allow any batter to have a fruitful stand with Vasavada save a brief one where Prerak Mankad (29) added 47 for the sixth wicket. Once Kaverappa got him in his post-lunch spell, there was not much Vasavada could have done.

Brief Scores: Rest of India 308 all out in 94.2 overs (Sai Sudharsan 72, Saurabh Kumar 39; Parth Bhut 5/94 in 29.2 overs).

Saurashtra 212/9 in 80 overs (Cheteshwar Pujara 29, Arpit Vasavada 54; Saurabh Kumar 3/64, Vidwath Kaverappa 3/28).

UK Matches Record For Hottest September: Weather Department

London:

The UK matched the record last month for the warmest September since records began in 1884, according to provisional figures released by the national weather service on Monday.

The mean temperature in September was 15.2 degrees Celsius (59 Fahrenheit), equalling the 2006 record, with the Met Office saying the figures were “substantially influenced” by the impact of climate change.

“This September’s temperature records are heavily driven by how significantly warm the first half of the month was,” said Met Offices scientific manager Mark McCarthy.

The UK had a cool and wet summer, with the hottest day of the year occurring in September for only the fifth day in recorded history.

September also had seven consecutive days where temperatures were above 30 Celsius somewhere in the UK, another record.

“The significantly warm start to September was influenced by high pressure across Europe,” Mr McCarthy said.

The weather service added that a September mean temperature of 15.2 Celsius for the UK would be “practically impossible” without climate change.

“September 2023’s temperature was substantially influenced by climate change and our attribution study shows how this figure would have been practically impossible in a climate without human-induced greenhouse gas emissions,” said Met Office senior scientist Jennifer Pirret.

Watch: Nitin Gadkari Takes A 'Test Drive' On Hydrogen Bus In Prague

Nitin Gadkari reached Czech Republic yesterday.

Prague:

Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, who is on an official visit to Czech Republic, took a test drive on a hydrogen bus in Prague today. Mr Gadkari, flanked by several officials, was seen riding the bus, in a video posted on X, formerly Twitter.

“Hydrogen buses hold significant promise in reducing carbon emissions and addressing environmental concerns, contributing to a cleaner and greener future,” read the caption.

The office of Nitin Gadkari also shared a series of photos of his test drive on X with the caption, “Union Minister Shri
@nitin_gadkari Ji took a test drive in a Hydrogen Bus by Skoda in Prague, Czech Republic today, showcasing India’s commitment to exploring sustainable and eco-friendly mobility solutions.”

Hydrogen fuel cell powered buses use hydrogen and air to generate electricity and are more sustainable and eco-friendly mode of public transport.

Nitin Gadkari reached Czech Republic yesterday where he got a “traditional Maharashtrian” welcome at the Prague airport.

Earlier today, he participated in the Ministerial session on Road Safety at the 27th World Road Congress in Prague. He reiterated India’s commitment to achieving global road safety targets set in the Stockholm Declaration, according to an official statement.

Nitin Gadkari has long been an advocate of transition to renewables and green energy. Earlier this year in March, he rolled into the Parliament in a green hydrogen-powered car – the first of its kind in India.

Nitin Gadkari also launched India’s first hydrogen-based advanced “Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV)” – Toyota Mirai in March this year. He had also shared a video of how green hydrogen can power a car. At the launch, he said that green hydrogen was “an efficient, eco-friendly and sustainable energy pathway to make India energy self-reliant”.

Nitin Gadkari had in January announced that he would himself use a hydrogen-powered car. “Toyota Company from Japan has given me a vehicle which runs on green Hydrogen. I will use it myself as a pilot project (on alternative fuel),” he had said.

Nitin Gadkari has often favoured a green transition in fuel, saying rapid strides in green fuel technology will reduce the cost of electric vehicles (EVs), bringing them on a par with petrol-run vehicles in two years’ time.

London: Khalistan supporters deplorably staged a protest outside the Indian High Commission in London on Monday.

The pro-Khalistan protesters, who were restricted to the opposite side of the High Commission, waved anti-India placards and chanted slogans in the presence of British security personnel. This came on the back of Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doriaswamy not being allowed entry into a gurdwara in Glasgow the other day.

India and Canada are already involved in a bitter diplomatic spat. With relations taking a dive, India has issued a precautionary advisory to its citizens and travellers heading to Canada, urging them to exercise extreme caution due to the rising incidents of anti-India activities and politically sanctioned hate crimes and criminal violence in the country.

During his recent visit to Washington, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had stated that Canada has not shared any specific intel to support allegations of India’s involvement in the killing of pro-Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18.
