Sarayan caravanserai in eastern Iran

TEHRAN, Oct. 02 (MNA) – The centuries-old Sarayan caravanserai, which is located in a barren landscape in eastern Iran, was inscribed on the National Heritage list in 2003, and it is home to a museum of anthropology.

Caravanserai is a compound word combining “caravan” with “Sara”. The former stands for a group of travelers and Sara means the building. They often had massive portals supported by elevated load-bearing walls. Guest rooms were constructed around the courtyard and stables behind them, with doors in the corners of the yard.

Iran’s earliest caravanserais were built during the Achaemenid era (550 – 330 BC). For many travelers to Iran, staying in or even visiting a centuries-old caravanserai can be a wide experience as they have an opportunity to feel the past, a time travel back into a forgotten age.

South Khorasan is home to many historical and natural attractions, such as Birjand Castle, Dragon Cave, Furg Citadel, and Polond Desert. It is also known for its famous rugs as well as its saffron and barberry, which are produced in almost all parts of the province.

Los Angeles: And the wait is finally over. Trailer for Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali-starrer ‘Leave the World Behind’ has been unveiled.

As per Variety, the movie stars Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke as a couple who books a weekend getaway with their children. In the middle of the night, the owner of the home, played by Mahershala Ali, shows up to seek refuge with his daughter, played by Myha’la Herrold. It is unclear what exactly is happening to the world, but the film is more concerned with what is happening inside the home: Will the two families work together to survive or instead turn against one another?

Kevin Bacon also stars as a conspiracy-obsessed construction worker, in addition to Farrah Mackenzie and Charlie Evans as Roberts and Hawke’s children.

“Leave the World Behind’ is the first fictional movie executive produced by the Obamas banner Higher Ground Productions, having previously focused on children’s programs, documentaries and historical dramas.

‘Leave the World Behind’ opens on November 22 before debuting on Netflix on December 8.

Wagner chief's son to 'take over command' of paramilitary group

Pavel Prigozhin, the son of former Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin

The son of former Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin is set to take over command of the paramilitary group, documents on social media suggest.

The Institute of Study of War (ISW) in Washington said on Monday that Pavel Prigozhin, 25, is taking “command” and will lead Wagner in Ukraine.

Citing a well-known Telegram channel associated with the Wagner Group, the report said Pavel has entered negotiations with the Russian National Guard known as Rosgvardia to allow the group to rejoin combat operations in Ukraine.

The report comes days after Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared to appoint a commander to head the group in Ukraine. The president has publicly extended his support to Andrey Troshev, a former Wagner commander now serving in the Russian Ministry of Defense.

The former Wagner chief died in a plane crash northwest of Moscow in August.

He staged a short-lived mutiny against Moscow in June. After the aborted mutiny, Putin said Wagner would be dismantled in Russia and that its fighters could sign contracts with the defense ministry, leave for Belarus or go home.

When Russia launched its “special military operation” in Ukraine in February, 2022, the paramilitary group was pivotal.

The main combat elements of the group are now split across several countries, including Belarus, the Central African Republic, Libya, and Mali.

The ISW said in its assessment, “The status of the Wagner Group remains unclear amid reported negotiations about the Wagner Group’s future cooperation with the Russian government.”

The New York trial accusing Trump of lying about his wealth opens as he denounces it as a ”scam”

New York: The fraud lawsuit that could cost former President Donald Trump control of some of his most prized properties went on trial Monday, with New York state lawyers vowing to hold him accountable while he denounced the case as a politically motivated “scam.”

The civil case, brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, accuses the business-mogul-turned-politician and his company of deceiving banks, insurers and others by habitually misstating his wealth in financial statements.

“They were lying year after year after year,” Kevin Wallace, a lawyer in James’ office, said in an opening statement as Trump sat at the defense table.

Trump showed up voluntarily for the trial, with his control over Trump Tower and some other major real estate holdings in jeopardy.

“This is a continuation of the single greatest witch hunt of all time,” the Republican said as he approached the courtroom, reiterating claims that James, a Democrat, is trying to thwart his return to the White House.

“It’s a scam. It’s a sham,” Trump said.

He called the case “an attempt to hurt me in an election” and added: “I don’t think the people of this country are going to stand for it.” Trump looked away from James as he passed her on the way into court, with a disgusted look on his face. Meanwhile, his campaign immediately began fundraising off the appearance.

Judge Arthur Engoron already has ruled that Trump committed fraud in his business dealings. Last week’s ruling, if upheld on appeal, could force Trump to give up New York properties including Trump Tower, a Wall Street office building, golf courses and a suburban estate. Trump has called it a “a corporate death penalty” and insisted the judge is unfair and out to get him.

It is a non-jury trial, so Engoron will decide on six other claims in the lawsuit. James is seeking USD 250 million in penalties and a ban on Trump doing business in New York.

Before the trial Monday, James reiterated her position that Trump for years engaged in “persistent and repeated fraud.” “No matter how powerful you are, and no matter how much money you think you have, no one is above the law,” she said on her way into the courthouse.

In her office’s opening statement, Wallace placed Trump squarely at the center of the alleged financial fudging: “Every estimate was determined by Mr. Trump.” Trump, the Republican front-runner in the 2024 presidential race, has denied wrongdoing. He says that James and the judge are undervaluing such assets as his Palm Beach, Florida, resort, Mar-a-Lago, and that it didn’t matter what he put on his financial statements because they have a disclaimer that says they shouldn’t be trusted.

Trump isn’t expected to testify for several weeks. His trip to court Monday marked a remarkable departure from his past practice.

Trump didn’t go to court as either a witness or a spectator when his company and one of its top executives was convicted of tax fraud last year. He didn’t show, either, for a civil trial earlier this year in which a jury found him liable for sexually assaulting the writer E. Jean Carroll in a department store dressing room.

James’ lawsuit accused Trump and his company of a long list of falsehoods in the financial statements he gave to banks.

In a recent court filing, James’ office alleged Trump exaggerated his wealth by as much as USD 3.6 billion.
Among the allegations were that Trump claimed his Trump Tower apartment in Manhattan — a three-story penthouse replete with gold-plated fixtures — was nearly three times its actual size and worth an astounding USD 327 million. No apartment in New York City has ever sold for close to that amount, James said.

Trump valued Mar-a-Lago as high as USD 739 million — more than 10 times a more reasonable estimate of its worth, James claimed.

Trump’s figure for the private club was based on the idea that the property could be developed for residential use. While Trump lives there, deed terms prohibit further residential development on the property, James said.

He and his lawyers have also argued that no one was harmed by anything in the financial statements. Banks he borrowed money from were fully repaid. Business partners made money. And Trump’s own company flourished.

James’ lawsuit is one of several legal headaches for Trump as he campaigns for a return to the White House in next year’s election.

He has been indicted four times since March, accused of plotting to overturn his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden, hoarding classified documents and falsifying business records related to hush money paid on his behalf.

The New York fraud trial could last into December, Engoron said.

Guwahati/Thiruvananthapuram:

England beat Bangladesh by four wickets while New Zealand disposed of the South African challenge by seven runs, both courtesy Duckworth-Lewis method in their respective World Cup warm-up games on Monday. In the match at Guwahati which became a 37-overs-per-side affair, Bangladesh scored 188 for 9 riding on Mehidy Hasan Miraj’s 74 off 89 balls. Tanzid Hasan with 45 was the other useful contributor. England used as many as nine bowlers with left-armer Reece Topley taking three wickets. In reply, England’s revised target was 197 and they knocked it off in just 24.1 overs. Moeen Ali hit six sixes in his 56 off 39 balls while Jos Buttler hit a quick-fire 15-ball 30.

In the other game at Thiruvananthapuram, New Zealand posted a healthy 321 for 6 in 50 overs with Devon Conway (78 off 73 balls) and Tom Latham (52 off 56 balls) scoring half-centuries. Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen both got three wickets apiece.

Due to inclement weather, South Africa needed 219 in 37 overs as per DLS score and they fought well but ended up scoring 211 for 4 in the stipulated overs. Quinton de Kock, set to retire after the World Cup, looked in good touch, scoring 84 of 89 balls. Rassie van der Dussen with 51 was the other half-century maker.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Hits Out At 'Dominant' Google In US Trial

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Hits Out At 'Dominant' Google In US Trial

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said it would be a game changer (for Bing) to be a default on Safari.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told a US court on Monday that Google’s dominance of the search engine market made it very hard for rivals to emerge, hitting out sharply at the business practices of his company’s archrival.

Nadella spoke to a courtroom in Washington DC, where lawyers from the US Department of Justice are attempting to persuade a federal judge that Google has illegally paid billions to Apple and others to preserve its monopoly.

Microsoft’s Bing has been trying since 2009 to build market share against Google, but Nadella said it could never compete against the search engine behemoth, largely due to its arrangements with Apple.
“You can call it popular, but to me it’s dominant,” Nadella told a Google lawyer during tense cross examination.

The three-month trial is the biggest US antitrust case against a big tech company since the same department took on Microsoft more than two decades ago over the dominance of its Windows operating system.

Nadella broadly backed the government’s contention that Google’s intake of data from being the world’s preeminent search engine created a network effect that only made Google a more powerful tool to advertisers and users.

“It becomes even harder to break through when you don’t have (market) share,” Nadella said.

 Defaults matter

Nadella said distribution was key to a successful search engine and that his company was prepared to pay Apple dearly to give Bing the default status on the iPhone.

“Defaults are the only thing that matters” and arguments by Google that users will easily switch to another app were “bogus,” Nadella said.

“It would be a game changer (for Bing) to be a default on Safari,” he added.

Apple instead stuck with Google and receives billions of dollars every year from the search engine giant with a generous revenue sharing deal, earlier testimony has revealed.

With his approaches rebuffed by Apple, Nadella said that Bing has remained a very small player.
The company has continued to invest in Bing, Nadella said, awaiting a possible “paradigm shift” or some sort of government intervention to restructure the business.

The CEO also testified that despite some early “exuberance,” he no longer believed the emergence of ChatGPT would reshape Google’s dominance of the search business.

Microsoft earlier this year moved aggressively to integrate the AI technology into its Bing search engine, creating some expectation that Google’s singular position was under threat.

Nadella said he was now worried that Google would be able to use its dominance in search to strongarm content providers that are key to training generative AI models.

“I worry a lot in spite of my enthusiasm that this vicious cycle can become even more vicious,” Nadella said.

Parliamentary panel asks Indian missions abroad to promote tourist destinations

The Standing Panel on Transport, Tourism, and Culture, in a recent report, recommended this after observing that there were 10.93 million foreign tourist arrivals in India during pre-pandemic year 2019, but the current FTA numbers are still well below the pre-pandemic levels

New Delhi: Taking cognisance of a study by the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), which estimated that tourism in India would not regain its pre-pandemic levels till 2026, a Parliamentary panel has emphasised that Indian missions abroad must ensure promotion and marketing of tourist destinations and products.

The Standing Panel on Transport, Tourism, and Culture, in a recent report, recommended this after observing that there were 10.93 million foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) in India during pre-pandemic year 2019, but the current FTA numbers are still well below the pre-pandemic levels.

The committee, on being informed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) representatives that the tourism officers posted in Indian missions abroad have tourism promotion as additional charge, recommended that as responsibility for tourism promotion abroad now rests solely with the Indian missions, the tourism officers may be given sole charge as far as possible as it is necessary for the transitional change from the overseas tourist offices to the missions in many countries and to create confidence among the stakeholders that the missions are attaching top priority to tourism promotion.

The tourism officers were designated by MEA in October 2021.

However the panel was informed that since then the tourism officers have had only one meeting with the Indian stakeholders a year back. The committee was also informed by the stakeholders that after the closure of the overseas tourist officers, India did not figure in the brochures of the overseas tourism agents, thus adversely impacting the prospects of Indian tourism.

In its interaction with the MEA, the committee was further informed that the overseas tourist offices had a lot of funds available for this purpose and the Ministry of Tourism is still having discussions with the MEA on how to place a separate budget for tourism at the disposal of the MEA, which would enable them to give brochure support for the agents and other promotional work. The committee was surprised that these aspects of budget for promotion and campaign schedule for the missions have not yet been resolved as the overseas tourist offices had gradually been shut down over the last two years and only the last eight were closed in March 2023.

There was sufficient time for the two ministries to have the transition formalities in place, it further noted. On further query, the panel was informed that the MEA is in consultation with the Tourism Ministry to jointly address such concerns arising out of closure of overseas India tourism offices. The committee recommended that the Tourism Ministry may settle the matters expeditiously so that the MEA would have both the funds and the programme to go ahead with the work relating to tourism promotion.

The panel also said that the exclusion of India from tourism brochures is a major issue in the absence of which the visibility of Indian tourism places would be difficult to maintain.
