"In Close Coordination With Canada…": US On Khalistani Terrorist's Murder

'In Close Coordination With Canada...': US On Khalistani Terrorist's Murder

India Canada Row: Hardeep Singh Nijjar was gunned down outside a Gurdwara in Canada in June.

Washington:

The US has said it is in close coordination with Canada on allegations regarding the Indian government’s involvement in the fatal shooting of Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

“We remain in close coordination with our Canadian colleagues on this question,” US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said while responding to a question related to Nijjar’s killing in Canada.

Miller’s remarks came during a daily press briefing on Monday (US local time).

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently alleged that the Indian government was behind the fatal shooting of Nijjar.

Nijjar, who was a designated terrorist in India, was gunned down outside a Gurdwara, in a parking area in Canada’s Surrey, British Columbia on June 18.

Trudeau, during a debate in the Canadian Parliament, claimed his country’s national security officials had reasons to believe that “agents of the Indian government” carried out the killing of the Canadian citizen, who also served as the president of Surrey’s Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara.

However, India has outrightly rejected the claims, calling it ‘absurd’ and ‘motivated’.

Notably, Canada has yet to provide any public evidence to support the claim about the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Miller said the US has engaged with the Indian government on a number of occasions to urge them to cooperate with Canada’s investigation.

He said US State Secretary Antony Blinken had an opportunity to discuss the issue with Foreign Minister S Jaishankar during their meeting on Friday.

Meanwhile, Trudeau has said that Ottawa wants to “work constructively with India” regarding the allegations.

While addressing a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trudeau said, “In regards to India, Canada has shared the credible allegations that I talked about on Monday. With India, we did that many weeks ago. We are there to work constructively with India and we hope that they engage with us so that we can get to the bottom of this very serious matter.”

EAM Jaishankar recently said that the ongoing problem with Canada has been there for some years because of the “permissiveness” by the government regarding terrorism, extremism and violence in the country.

Mr Jaishankar said that the current situation can’t be termed a “deadlock”, adding that the Indian government is open to looking at any specific and relevant thing shared by the Canadian side in connection with the issue.

Addressing a press conference in Washington DC on Friday, Mr Jaishankar said, “Well, I don’t know if I would use the term deadlock…The issue is as follows: The Canadians have made some allegations. We have pointed out to them that this is not the Government of India’s policy and if they are prepared to share with us specifics and anything relevant, we are also open to looking at it. So in that sense, that’s where the matter stands”.

“But what we do not want to see is an incident treated in isolation because then that somewhere does not convey the right picture,” he added.

The EAM said that the ongoing problem with Canada is because of the “permissiveness” regarding terrorism, extremism and violence in the country.

India has suspended its visa services in Canada, following Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau’s allegations of Indian involvement in the killing.

Amid strained ties, India issued an advisory for its citizens and those who are travelling to Canada to exercise “utmost caution in view of growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and criminal violence” in the country.

"The Only Face Of BJP In Rajasthan Is…": PM Modi Ahead Of Polls

PM Modi addressed his second public rally in Rajasthan in a week.

Jaipur:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has already conceded defeat in the upcoming assembly elections by requesting him not to scrap the welfare schemes started by the Congress in Rajasthan, and gave a “guarantee” that the BJP will not discontinue them.

Addressing a public rally in Chittorgarh, his second in Rajasthan in a week, PM Modi gave a clear indication that no leader will be projected as the chief ministerial candidate. The election symbol ‘lotus’ will be “the candidate”, he said.

Before his address, PM Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of projects worth Rs 7,200 crore at another event in Rajasthan. He also offered prayers in the Sanwaliya temple.

Former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, BJP state president CP Joshi, Leader of Opposition Rajendra Rathore and Union minister Arjun Meghwal were among the leaders present at the rally.

Mr Gehlot had recently demanded that Modi should give a guarantee that the Congress government’s schemes will not be discontinued if the BJP comes to power in the state.

Reacting to this, the prime minister said, “Mr Gehlot knows that the countdown of the Congress government has started. He in a way has congratulated the BJP by publicly requesting that welfare schemes be not stopped. I assure you that the BJP will not stop any scheme of public interest but will try to improve it. This is Modi’s guarantee.” Later, Congress leader Pawan Khera said the Prime Minister has accepted that the Rajasthan government has done good work.

“Our chief minister threw a trap and the prime minister fell for it by saying that the Gehlot government’s schemes will be continued. When our schemes are good, who will vote for you (BJP),” M Khera told reporters at a press conference in Chittorgarh.

Attacking the Gehlot government over corruption and women’s safety, PM Modi said it pains him whenever atrocities take place against daughters anywhere in the country. “But the Congress has made this a tradition here,” he charged.

The Prime Minister also said that the paper leak mafia in Rajasthan will be held accountable and given the harshest punishment.

Referring to tailor Kanhaiya Lal’s brutal murder in Udaipur last year, PM Modi asked whether the people of the state had voted for the Congress for this.

“People came on the pretext of getting clothes stitched, slit the throat of the tailor without any fear and made a video and made it viral. The Congress gets worried about votes in that too,” he said.

The Prime Minister alleged that it is not possible to celebrate any festival peacefully in Rajasthan because of the “anti-development” environment created by the Congress.

The BJP will bring prosperity, employment and development to the state besides ensuring the safety of women, he asserted.

PM Modi claimed that the Congress came to power in the state by lying to people but could not run the government. Chief Minister Gehlot was busy saving his chair while half of his own party was busy removing him for more than four years, he claimed.

There were conflicts within the Congress in Rajasthan but they had consensus when it came to loot, the prime minister alleged, adding that criminals, rioters and corrupt Congress leaders considered themselves the government and such a dispensation should not last even a day.

“Rajasthan has given a call. Will save Rajasthan, will bring BJP government,” he asserted.

The prime minister further said that after coming to power, the BJP government would get to the bottom of the betrayal done to the youths of Rajasthan. “The paper leak mafia here will be held accountable at all costs,” he said.

“Action will definitely be taken against those who have committed corruption here and looted the money of the poor. This is also Modi’s guarantee. No matter how much these people abuse Modi, strict action against corruption will continue,” PM Modi added.

The prime minister also said that whenever the Congress feels it is going to lose in an election, it starts making false announcements.

The Rajasthan government is also making such efforts, he said, adding that in the last five years, the Congress was busy saving the government and now, it is worried about people’s welfare.

Rajasthan comes on top when it comes to crime, PM Modi claimed. “Today, when it comes to anarchy, riots and stone-pelting, the name of Rajasthan is infamous. Today our Rajasthan is becoming the most infamous in cases of atrocities on women, Dalits and backward people,” he said.

“The identity of Rajasthan is of hospitality, folk music, folk culture, bravery. But in five years, the Congress government has ruined the credibility of Rajasthan,” PM Modi added.

Hitting out at the opposition INDIA alliance led by the Congress party, the prime minister alleged that they were saying insulting things about women.

“We are seeing every day what insulting things the leaders of the arrogant alliance of the Congress are saying about women. They do not want women to get their rights, hence they are making excuses and spreading confusion in the name of caste and religion,” PM Modi alleged.

He also made clear there were no factions in the BJP’s state leadership and it will contest the election under the party’s ‘lotus’ symbol.

“The only face of the BJP in Rajasthan is the symbol of ‘lotus’. Our hope and candidate is the lotus,” Modi said.

The prime minister further said that every poor of the country would get a permanent roof to live in. “Modi will give a permanent roof to every poor,” he said.

On direct benefit transfer (DBT) to farmers’ accounts, the prime minister said, “In the last nine years, the BJP government has transferred lakhs of crores of rupees directly to the accounts of the beneficiaries. PM Kisan Samman Nidhi comes directly into the farmer’s account. Modi’s model is the same – direct benefits to every beneficiary.”

Editorial: Safety of girls paramount

The Law Commission’s recommendation not to tinker with the age of consent — currently 18 years — is a welcome development

The anomalies in the existing laws pertaining to the criminality of rape have often led to the exploitation of minor girls in India. Human traffickers generally use the marriage status of minors as an alibi to push them into flesh trade. The ambiguity in the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act is also posing challenges to the judiciary. The latest recommendation by the Law Commission not to tinker with the age of consent — currently 18 years — is a welcome development. Any attempt to reduce the age of consent would have a detrimental effect on combating child marriage and trafficking. Striking a balance between protecting children and respecting the autonomy of young adults is a complex matter. The courts need to tread with caution even in cases related to adolescent love. The Law Commission has rightly advised the introduction of “guided judicial discretion” while sentencing in cases that involve the tacit approval of children in the 16-to-18 years age bracket. Certain amendments would be required to the stringent POCSO Act to remedy the situation in cases involving tacit approval, though not consent under law, on the part of children aged between the said age bracket. The Commission, led by former Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, has said that such cases, involving consensual acts by adolescents without any criminal intent, should not be treated with the same severity under POCSO.

The reference to the age of consent was made to the Law Commission in November last year by the Karnataka High Court, which asked it to rethink the age criteria for consent, taking into consideration the rising number of cases relating to minor girls above the age of 16 years falling in love and eloping. Taking note of such judicial observations, the Commission opined that cases where there is tacit approval do not merit the same severity as “cases that were ideally imagined to fall under the POCSO Act”. The purpose of the POCSO Act was to safeguard children from sexual exploitation, not to criminalise consensual relationships between young adults. In this context, the law panel’s suggestion needs serious consideration. It has called for introducing ‘guided judicial discretion’ for sentencing in cases involving tacit approval of children in the 16-18 age bracket. The government would do well to initiate the process of making legislative changes. Research has shown that a significant chunk of cases under POCSO are filed by families and against consensual relationships that parents don’t approve of. To prevent this subversion of the 2012 law, the Commission’s suggested measure will need to be bolstered by adequate focus on implementation and a shift in both prosecutorial and judicial mindsets. The Commission’s stance against lowering the age of consent is rooted in concerns that it could inadvertently facilitate coercive practices, child marriages, marital rape and trafficking.

Nawaz Sharif Books Air Ticket To Return To Pakistan On October 21: Report

Nawaz Sharif has reportedly booked a ticket on flight EY243 of Etihad Airways. (File)

Islamabad:

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has reportedly booked flight tickets to return from the UK to the country on October 21, ending a four-year “self-imposed exile”, a media report said Monday.

Nawaz Sharif, 73, recently said that he is excited to return to Pakistan on October 21 to lead his party in the election likely to be held in January 2024.

Citing a source, Samaa TV reported that Nawaz Sharif, who is currently in the UK, will land at the Abu Dhabi International Airport on October 21. He is scheduled to fly to Lahore from Abu Dhabi on the same day.

He has booked a business class ticket on flight EY243 of Etihad Airways in advance, sources said. They further said the Etihad Airways flight will land at the Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore at 6:25 p.m.

Those accompanying Nawaz Sharif will reportedly be his staff members, personal advisers, Dr. Adnan and Senator Irfan Siddiqui.

According to sources, several PML-N leaders and former lawmakers have also booked seats on the same flight from Abu Dhabi to Lahore.

Several PML-N members from different walks of life are expected to reach the Abu Dhabi airport to welcome Nawaz Sharif, the sources added.

Meanwhile, in a bid to organise an unforgettable welcome in Lahore, a PML-N leader has announced- a unique incentive: a brand-new Honda 125 motorcycle for individuals who bring large numbers of people to welcome their leader.

A viral video circulating on social media shows a prominent PML-N worker, whose identity remains undisclosed, making an exhilarating announcement during a public gathering.

Flanked by large images of Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz, the party worker declared: “This is a big announcement. I hope my team will win. You are all being informed that whoever brings more people to welcome Nawaz Sharif on October 21 will get a Honda 125 each.” Earlier, former finance minister Ishaq Dar had claimed that the former prime minister would not have to go to jail upon his return to Pakistan, as the cases against him were fake.

Talking to SAMAA TV in London, Dar, also the PML-N senator, said a legal strategy had been prepared to deal with the cases against Nawaz Sharif.

Nawaz Sharif stepped down as the country’s prime minister in 2017 after he was disqualified for life from holding public office by the Supreme Court for not declaring a receivable salary. He has been living in London since 2019 after the LHC granted him four-week permission allowing him to go abroad for his treatment.

He was serving a seven-year imprisonment at Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail in the Al-Azizia Mills case before he was allowed to proceed to London in 2019 on “medical grounds”.

In 2020, an accountability court declared him a proclaimed offender in the Toshakhana vehicles case. He is also accused of obtaining luxury cars from the treasury house by paying just 15 per cent of the price of these vehicles.

Nawaz Sharif was convicted in the Al-Azizia Mills and Avenfield corruption cases in 2018.

Thiruvananthapuram:

Catholic priest under the Idukki diocese of the Syro-Malabar church was relieved of his duties as vicar on Monday, hours after he joined the BJP.

Fr Kuriakose Mattam received the primary membership of the BJP from the party’s Idukki district president K S Aji on Monday. Within hours, the Idukki diocese initiated action against him.

The church said Fr Mattom has been temporarily relieved of parish duties at the Mankuva St Thomas church near Adimali.

“Father Kuriakose Mattam of Mankuva church has been temporarily relieved of his duties as vicar,” a statement by the Idukki Diocese said.

A church spokesperson told PTI that the disciplinary action was taken as under Canon Law, a priest of the church cannot join or have active participation in any political party. The 74-year-old priest will retire in a few months, a church source said.

The priest joined the BJP at a time when the catholic church had been attacking the party over the Manipur violence.

In a Facebook post, Mr Aji shared the images of the priest and said Fr Mattam has joined the BJP after “observing the current situation” in the country.

In a video, the priest said that he could not find any reason not to join the BJP.

“I follow contemporary issues. I don’t find any reason not to join the BJP. I have friendships with many BJP workers. Today I received a membership. I have read from the newspapers and have an understanding of the BJP in the country,” the priest said.

Mr Aji said the entry of the Christian priest into the BJP is a reply to those who criticise the party over the Manipur issue.

Pope Francis Signals Openness To Blessings For Same Sex Couples

Pope Francis Signals Openness To Blessings For Same Sex Couples

Pope Francis has appeared to leave open the possibility of priests blessing same-sex couples.

Vatican City:

Pope Francis has appeared to leave open the possibility of priests blessing same-sex couples, if they are limited, decided on a case-by-case basis and not confused with wedding ceremonies of heterosexuals.

Francis made his opinion known in one answer to five questions from five conservative cardinals from Asia, Europe, Africa, the United States and Latin America.

The cardinals sent the pope a set of formal questions, known as “dubia” (“doubts” in Latin), about issues relating to a global gathering that starts at the Vatican on Wednesday.

One of the questions specifically regarded the practice, which has become relatively common in places like Germany, of priests blessing same sex couples who are in a committed relationship.

The written exchange took place in July and the Vatican published the pope’s responses on Monday after the five cardinals unilaterally disclosed their initiative, saying they were not satisfied with Francis’ answers.

The pope’s nuanced response differed from an explicit ruling against such blessings by the Vatican’s doctrinal office in 2021.

In his seven-point response, Francis said the Church was very clear that the sacrament of matrimony could only be between a man and woman and open to procreation and that the Church should avoid any other ritual or sacramental rite that contradicted this teaching.

Still, he said “pastoral charity should permeate all our decisions and attitudes” adding that “we cannot be judges who only deny, reject and exclude”.

At times, he said, requests for blessings were a means through which people reached out to God to live better lives, even if some acts were “objectively morally unacceptable”.

The Church teaches that same-sex attraction is not sinful but homosexual acts are.

Any eventual blessings, Francis said, should not become the norm or get blanket approval from Church jurisdictions such as dioceses or national bishops conferences.

Francis DeBernardo, executive director of New Ways Ministry, which promotes Church outreach to LGBT Catholics, said that while the response was not a “full-fledged, ringing endorsement” of such blessings, it was very welcomed.

In a statement DeBernardo said that the pope’s words implied “that the church does indeed recognise that holy love can exist between same-gender couples, and the love of these couples mirrors the love of God”.

Watch: Rajasthan MLA Polishes Shoes, Touches Man's Feet With Forehead

Om Prakash Hudla respectfully touched the feet of an elderly supporter with his forehead

New Delhi:

With elections just around the corner, political parties are going that extra step to win over voters, even if it means walking that extra mile in someone else’s shoes. And that is just what an Independent MLA from Rajasthan did when he polished the shoes of his party workers and constituents.

Resolute in his commitment to combating caste biases in the state, the MLA gathered his supporters at a cobbler’s shop and polished their shoes. Videos of his unique election campaign – which quickly went viral on social media – showed him respectfully touching the feet of an elderly supporter with his forehead and seeking his blessings.

Under a shed, hundreds had gathered to meet their MLA, who sat there polishing shoes. “An MLA who polishes our shoes, protects us and the Constitution is among us,” the announcement in the background said.

As people showered rose petals and cheered for the MLA, Mr Hudla helped an elderly man out on his newly polished shoes.

Speaking to NDTV, Mr Hudla said he wants to remove caste discrimination. “Eradicating caste discrimination is my priority. I consider workers as my God. I stand with the common man, the poor, and the labourers and I am always ready to help them. Today I have honored them by polishing their shoes,” he said.

After nearly an hour of polishing hundreds of shoes, Mr Hudla stressed: “My aim is to eliminate caste discrimination in the area. Many in the area indulge in caste politics, which is not right for us. In Mahwa, people are living in peace with love for one another. We have established new dimensions of development in the Mahwa Assembly Constituency.”

“I firmly believe that casteism is a hurdle in our path towards progress and development,” Mr. Hudla stated. “It perpetuates discrimination and divides our communities. It’s high time we break these barriers and work together to uplift every citizen.”

Earlier in the day, to mark Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, Om Prakash Hudla raised a 100-metre-high Tricolour outside the Mahwa district hospital. Supporters then carried him on their shoulders to a stadium, where the MLA unveiled the statue of former President APJ Abdul Kalam.

Interestingly, the MLA had polished the shoes of his constituents after winning the election in 2018.
