US Open: Anna Danilina and Harri Heliovaara win mixed doubles title

New York: Anna Danilina of Kazakhstan and Harri Heliovaara, her partner from Finland, finished a fairytale run to their first Grand Slam title by beating the No.1 seeds Jessica Pegula and Austin Krajicek to claim the mixed doubles title at the US Open here on Saturday.

Anna Danilina and Harri Heliovaara won the final 6-3, 6-4 inside Arthur Ashe Stadium to claim the title in their maiden Grand Slam competition as a team.

Heliovaara thus became the first Finnish man in the Open Era to win a mixed doubles title at the US Open, and Danilina, the first Kazakh.

Heliovaara is the second Finn to win a mixed doubles title after Henri Kontinen won the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon in 2016. Danilina is the first Kazakh to win any major in mixed doubles.

The pair had teamed up at the sign-in deadline in the referee’s office before the mixed tournament began. However, their experience individually as doubles players — both are ranked in the Top 30 on their respective tours — certainly helped their partnership gel from the opening round.

And continued to build on the partnership, eventually reaching the final.

In the first set in the final, it was all the Kazakh/Finnish duo after they broke in Krajicek’s opening service game to go up 2-0 and for them.

Although the all-American pair did earn three break points to get back on serve in the next game, they never managed to get even.

In the second set, despite giving up a break early, Pegula and Krajicek raised their level in their attempts to come back into the match. The Americans broke back to level the set 2-2 and stayed ahead with incredible shots as the set neared a close.

But Danilina and Heliovaara broke crucially in the eighth game to make it 4-4, affording them a chance to seal the match on serve.

They rose to the occasion in style with a hold to 15 on Heliovaara’s delivery, as Danilina smashed down a final forehand volley for the win.

Global trends, macroeco data, trading activity of foreign investors to drive market trends: Analysts

New Delhi: Macroeconomic data announcements, global trends and trading activity of foreign investors would guide momentum in the equity market this week, analysts said.

Markets ended a five-week losing streak and gained nearly a per cent last week, helped by a sharp rebound on Friday.
Last week, the BSE benchmark jumped 500.65 points or 0.77 per cent and the Nifty gained 169.5 points or 0.87 per cent.

“On the global front, problems in China’s real estate, fluctuations in the dollar index, and the US bond yields will play a pivotal role in shaping market dynamics throughout the week. Apart from that, macroeconomic data like the S&P Global services PMI, US jobless data will provide insights into the FED’s monetary policy outlook,” said Pravesh Gour, Senior Technical Analyst, Swastika Investmart Ltd.

The domestic PMI (Purchasing Managers’ Index) data for the services sector will be announced on Tuesday.

“On the macro front, some of the key factors that will be in focus in the coming days are India’s S&P global services PMI, Euro zone S&P global composite PMI, UK services PMI, Euro Zone Q2 GDP, US factory orders, S&P Global US services PMI, crude oil prices, initial jobless claims, FII (Foreign Institutional Investors) and DII (Domestic Institutional Investors) activities will drive the market,” Arvinder Singh Nanda, Senior Vice President, Master Capital Services Ltd, said.

In the absence of any major triggers from the domestic market, sentiments will be driven by global cues, including the release of US payroll and PMI data, said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.

Besides, movement of crude oil and trend in rupee against the US dollar will also influence trading patterns in the market.

“After a sluggish to negative sentiment last month, foreign investors could be looking at Indian markets with fresh optimism once again, as the nation continues to overcome global economic challenges and perform well on most economic parameters.

“While foreign investors have already been net buyers of local shares in the past five sessions, the recent macroeconomic numbers like strong Q1 GDP growth, robust August GST collections, and upbeat PMI data for last month should bolster their confidence in local markets,” said Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Research (Retail), Kotak Securities Ltd.

Manufacturing activities in India gained momentum in August as new orders and output increased at the quickest rates in nearly three years, according to a survey released on Friday.

GST collections grew by 11 per cent to over Rs 1.59 lakh crore in August on the back of improved compliance and reduced evasion, with experts forecasting higher mop-up to continue in the upcoming festive season.

3rd Phase Of Mandatory Gold Hallmarking Begins In 55 Districts, 17 States

The government said the 3rd phase of mandatory hallmarking of gold has come into force

New Delhi:

The government on Friday said the third phase of mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery and artefacts has come into force in 55 new districts in 16 states and one Union territory.

Gold hallmarking is a purity certification of the precious metal and was voluntary in nature till June 16, 2021, when the government decided to implement mandatory gold hallmarking in a phased manner.

Currently, a total of 343 districts are covered under mandatory hallmarking. In the first phase, launched on June 23, 2021, 256 districts were covered, while the second phase from April 4, 2022, included 32 more districts.

According to the Consumer Affairs Ministry, an order for implementation of the third phase of the mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery and gold artefacts was notified on September 8.

The third phase of the mandatory hallmarking will cover an additional 55 new districts in 16 states and one Union territory, it said in a statement.

Eight districts, including East Champaran, will be covered in Bihar, five districts each in Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra, and four districts in Telangana under the third phase.

Three districts each will be covered in Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, while two districts each in Assam, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.

In Rajasthan, the mandatory gold hallmarking will be implemented in one district — Jalore — during the third phase.

Nodal agency Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has successfully implemented mandatory hallmarking in the last two phases, wherein more than 4 lakh gold articles are being hallmarked with Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) every day.

Since the implementation of mandatory hallmarking, the ministry said, the number of registered jewellers has increased from 34,647 to 1,81,590, while Assaying and Hallmarking Centers (AHCs) rose to 1,471 from 945.

“More than 26 crore articles of gold jewellery have been hallmarked with HUID so far,” the ministry said.

Consumers are encouraged to verify the authenticity and purity of the hallmarked gold jewellery items with the HUID number purchased by using ‘verify HUID’ in the BIS Care App, which can be downloaded from the Play Store.

The number of downloads of the BIS Care App has increased from 2.3 lakhs during 2021-22 to 12.4 lakh in the current financial year. Further, more than one crore hits of ‘verify HUID’ in the BIS Care App have been recorded as of date in the span of the last two years, it added.

Erdogan, Aliyev hold phone conversation on Karabakh

During the telephone conversation, the two presidents discussed regional issues, including the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, and the situation in the Karabakh region.

The presidents exchanged views on prospects for the development of brotherly and allied relations between Azerbaijan and Turkey, according to Trend News.

Earlier on Sunday, Erdogan said that he would hold talks with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan as well.

Speaking after the close of the G20 summit in New Delhi, Erdogan said, “I will have a telephone conversation, probably tomorrow, with Mr Pashinyan. What has been done in Karabakh is not appropriate. We cannot accept this,” AFP reported.

Armenia and Azerbaijan accused each other on Thursday of amassing troops close to their joint border as tensions continue to rise over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Located in the South Caucasus, the landlocked region of Nagorno-Karabakh has been at the center of a dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia for more than three decades.

Since gaining independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991, the two neighboring countries have fought two wars, in 1994 and 2020, over the mountainous territory.

Karabakh, while acknowledged as a part of Azerbaijan by the international community, has a predominantly Armenian population that has persistently opposed Azerbaijani governance since a separatist war in 1994.

Tensions remain high and skirmishes along the shared border are a regular occurrence despite mediation efforts by the European Union, the United States and Russia.

Our batting was not up to mark: Pakistan captain Babar after losing to India by 228 runs

Colombo: Following a loss of 228 runs against India in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup, Pakistan captain Babar Azam expressed disappointment over his team’s batting performance, saying that it was not up to the mark.

Fiery centuries from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul followed by Kuldeep Yadav’s five-wicket haul powered India to 228 runs win over their traditional rival Pakistan in Asia Cup 2023 Super Four clash here at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Monday.

“Weather was not in our hands but we tried our best. We were not up to the mark with our batting and bowling. They (Indian openers) had plans for our bowlers and started well and that was followed up by Virat and Rahul. Jasprit and Siraj bowled well in the first 10 overs and swung the ball both ways, but our batting was not up to the mark,” Babar said in the post-match presentation.

Pakistan suffered their biggest defeat in the one-day international against India after they stepped in to play on reserve day after rain washed out the majority of play on Sunday.

After Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf didn’t come out to bat in Pakistan’s chase, India clinched the top spot in of Asia Cup 2023 Super 4s table.

Earlier, Virat Kohli’s vintage performance and KL Rahul’s unbridled century powered India to 356/2 against arch-rivals Pakistan in their Asia Cup Super Four clash.

Captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill’s half-centuries laid the foundation for India, while the unbeaten 233-run partnership between Kohli and Rahul added the icing on the cake as the former skipper finished the innings in style with a maximum.

Kohli finished his innings with an unbeaten 122, which came from 94 deliveries, while Rahul smashed a fiery 111 of 106 balls.

New Delhi: India’s import of cheap Russian oil plunged to lowest in seven months in August as monsoon rains dampened demand, industry data showed.

The world’s third largest oil consumer reduced imports from Russia for a third consecutive month in August. It took 1.46 million barrels a day from Russia in August, down from 1.91 million barrels purchased in the previous month, according to data from energy cargo tracker Vortexa.

Indian refiners also cut imports from Iraq, another top supplier, to 866,000 barrels per day from 891,000 bpd. Some of those volumes were replaced by a short surge in imports from Saudi Arabia, which jumped to 820,000 bpd from 484,000 bpd in July, the data showed.

From a market share of less than 1 per cent in India’s import basket before the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in February last year, Russia’s share in India’s imports hit a peak of about 2 million bpd in May, as refiners vied for heavily discounted shipments.

Following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February last year, Russian oil was sanctioned and shunned by European buyers and some in Asia, such as Japan. This led to Russian Urals crude being traded at a discount to Brent crude (the global benchmark). The discount on Russian Urals grade has however narrowed from levels of around USD 30 a barrel in the middle of last year to less than USD 10 per barrel.

Indian refiners, who convert crude oil extracted from below ground into finished products such as petrol and diesel, are now the biggest buyers of Russian oil as Chinese imports have maxed out due to a massive electrification of vehicles and demand issues in a shaky economy.

Indian refiners ramped up purchases from less than 2 per cent of their entire buys in pre-Ukraine war times to 33 per cent to capture the discounted oil.

India’s oil imports from the UAE also dropped to 273,000 bpd in August from 290,000 bpd in the previous month. Purchases from the US were also down at 160,000 bpd from 219,000 bpd in July.

India’s overall crude imports, which declined 7 per cent in August to 4.35 million barrels a day, are likely to pick up from October as product demand will gather pace in the fourth quarter.

“Several Indian refiners have planned maintenance scheduled across September to November, which could cap their crude imports. But festive demand in Q4 is expected to boost domestic demand, which coupled with robust export margins, is expected to see an uptick in India’s crude imports for the remainder of the year,” said Vortexa’s head of Asia-Pacific analysis Serena Huang.

India’s imports from Iraq have remained relatively flat month-on-month in August, while arrivals from Saudi Arabia have increased by over 55 per cent.

“Refiners have raised imports from Saudi Arabia off the back of strong refinery runs and lower refinery supplies from Russia. Given tight crude supplies from Saudi Arabia, it remains to be seen whether imports from Saudi Arabia can be sustained at this level,” she added.

Before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February last year, India was a minor importer of Russian crude, with purchases of about 44,500 barrels per day (bpd) in the 12 months to February 2022.

Watch: 2.2 Million Litres Wine Flowed Through Portugal Town. Here's Why

Sao Lorenco de Bairro in Portugal was in for a surprise on Sunday when a river of red wine began flowing through the streets of the small town.

Residents watched stunned as millions of litres of wine flowed down from a steep hill in the town and gushed down the streets, reports said. Videos show a seemingly endless river of wine flowing down the town’s lanes.

The mysterious wine river originated from a town distillery where tanks carrying barrels with over 2 million litres of red wine unexpectedly burst, The New York Post said.

The massive spill, which could fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool, also raised an environmental alert as the river of wine was headed to an actual river nearby. The wine also reportedly flooded a basement at a home near the distillery before it made its way to the rest of the town.

The fire department swung into action to stop the wine flood before it turned the Certima River into a river of wine. The flood was redirected and made to flow into a nearby field, the New York Post report said.

Levira Distillery has apologised for the bizarre incident and assured that it has dredged up the wine-soaked land in the town. “We assume full responsibility for the costs associated with cleaning and repairing the damage, having teams do so immediately,” the distillery said in a statement.

Former CEO of China’s Alibaba quits cloud business in surprise move during its leadership reshuffle

Daniel Zhang, resigned as head of its cloud computing unit in a surprise move as the Chinese e-commerce empire wraps up a leadership reshuffle.

Hong Kong: The former CEO of Alibaba, Daniel Zhang, resigned as head of its cloud computing unit Monday in a surprise move as the Chinese e-commerce empire wraps up a leadership reshuffle.

Alibaba said it will invest USD 1 billion in a technology fund Zhang will establish to support the firm’s strategies for future growth.

Zhang stepped down on the same day he gave up his roles as Alibaba’s CEO and chairman.

In a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange, Alibaba said that Eddie Wu, its new CEO, will also head its cloud unit. Wu and Alibaba’s new chairman Joseph Tsai assumed their new roles by Monday, with Alibaba saying it has “completed its leadership transition.”

Alibaba expressed its “deepest appreciation” to Zhang for his contributions to the company over the past 16 years.

Alibaba’s Hong Kong stock price was down 3.6 per cent Monday following the announcement.

In an internal letter dated Sunday and viewed by the AP, Tsai wrote that Zhang had “expressed his wish to transition away from his role” as chief of the cloud business, and the Alibaba board had “respected and accepted Daniel’s decision.” “Daniel will continue to contribute to Alibaba by channelling his expertise differently,” Tsai wrote.

Alibaba has been restructuring itself into six business units with the aim of eventually spinning most of them off and listing them to maximise shareholder returns.
In May, the company said it aimed for its cloud unit to be listed within the next 12 months. It reaffirmed that plan on Monday.

Zhang joined Alibaba in 2007 and is known for creating the company’s annual Singles Day online shopping extravaganza.

In 2015, he took over from co-founder Jack Ma as Alibaba’s CEO. In 2019 he succeeded Ma as chairman.
