G20 Presidency helping India deepen trade ties with member nations: Experts

New Delhi: The G20 Presidency with India is helping New Delhi to strengthen trade ties with member nations and provides an opportunity to attract investments from those countries in sectors like infrastructure, experts say.

They said that the G20 (Group of 20) holds a strategic role in securing future global economic growth and prosperity, as its members represent about 85 per cent of the global GDP (Gross Domestic Product), 75 per cent of global trade and two-thirds of the world’s population.

Presiding over this multilateral forum is an opportunity for India as it can showcase its strength and achievements for attracting investment and deepen its trade relation with these large economies, the experts added.

Fast-tracking negotiations for free trade agreement, ease of doing business, development of modern infrastructure, skilled manpower, large population with growing income are some of the positives which help India to enhance trade realisations with these member countries.

The G20 has 43 members and not 20 countries. These include 19 countries (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, UK and US) and the European Union (27-member group). Three EU countries — France, Germany, Italy — are counted among the 19 countries.

Trade experts suggested the government to fast-track ongoing negotiations for free trade agreement (FTA) with countries like the UK and EU as it would help India in better market access to these countries as well as facilitate investment.

However, they also asked not to use trade platforms to achieve climate aspirations as that could harm progress in both trade and climate discussions.

The largest trade block of G20, the EU, will set in motion the carbon border adjustment mechanism from October 1 this year, making exports expensive from countries like India.

“In the first eight months of 2023, the EU introduced five regulations on climate change and trade. The G20 nations should ignore this elephant in the room and discuss before individual countries rush to the WTO (World Trade Organisation (WTO). This may soon unravel world trade,” think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) Co-Founder Ajay Srivastava said.

Shardul S Shroff, Executive Chairman, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co, said that India should find a common ground with G20 countries to emerge as a global norm setter for the digital economy and use that global stature to boost IT and IT-enabled services exports.

India should position itself as the global norm-setter for various aspects of the digital economy, such as data protection, international contracting, digital assets, and international taxation, as it would help expand India’s footprint in the global services exports market, Shroff said.

Gaurav Dani, Founding Partner, INDUSLAW, said that India has the largest growing middle-income population offering a last consumer base for both goods and services and due to this global firms will continue to invest in India.

Sharing similar views, Rumki Majumdar, Economist, Deloitte India, said that many multinational firms are looking for alternate destinations for investment and diversifying supply chains, and the G20 Presidency will help India attract many such companies.

Massive improvement in infrastructure, ease of doing business, skilled labour force and growing market with large middle class consumer base are some of the key indicators that make India one of the most attractive places to invest and import quality goods, Hi-Tech Group Chairman Deep Kapuria said.

Mumbai-based exporter and Chairman of Technocraft Industries Sharad Kumar Saraf said India’s trade with G20 countries will grow at an accelerated rate because of the comfort and confidence created in the members due to the multiple events organised by India in different cities.

“This helped in showcasing the country as a whole. The G20 Presidency has thrown up many opportunities in diverse sectors for India. It is now for India to grab this opportunity. India should consider converting G20 in an economic block, a shade lower than free trade, maybe, reduced custom duties among the group members,” Saraf said.

Among the G20 members, India holds ninth position in terms of total trade (USD 1,662 billion) in goods and services in 2022. The EU (17,151 billion), China (USD 7,183 billion) and USA (6,933 billion) hold top three spots.

Share of G20 nations in India’s merchandise export in 2022 stood at 64 per cent and import at 52.4 per cent.

India’s leading export destinations among G20 nations are USA (USD 91 billion), EU (USD 87 billion), China (USD 17.5 billion), UK (USD 14.4 billion), Turkey (USD 10.7 billion) and Saudi Arabia (USD 10 billion).

The country’s suppliers include China (USD 118.5 billion), EU (USD 59.1 billion), Saudi Arabia (USD 43.3 billion), USA (USD 38.4 billion), Russia (USD 34 billion), Australia (USD 19.2 billion), Korea (USD 18.9 billion), and Japan (USD 13.9 billion) during the last year.

Sector wise, India’s top exports to these member countries in 2022 included electronics and machinery (USD 41.3 billion), petroleum products (USD 30 billion), cut and polished diamonds and gold jewellery (USD 25.9 billion), organic chemicals (USD 20.5 billion), medicines (USD 16.4 billion), automobiles parts (USD 11.8 billion).

The main import items included electronics (USD 46.6 billion), machinery (USD 42.5 billion), petroleum products (USD 40.6 billion), organic chemicals, APIs (USD 18.9 billion), rough diamonds and gold (USD 17.6 billion), plastics raw materials (USD 13.0 billion), and iron and steel (USD 12.8 billion).

In terms of foreign direct investments (FDI), the US is the biggest investor with USD 61.3 billion or nine per cent share in India’s FDI during April 2000-June 2023, when it was aggregated at USD 645.4 billion.

It was followed by Japan with USD 40 billion or 6 per cent contribution; UK (USD 34.3 billion) or 5 per cent share; Germany (USD 14.25 billion) or 2 per cent share, and France (USD 10.62 billion) or 1.64 per cent.

Not Kohli Or Rahul. Gambhir "Can't Look Beyond" This Star In India's Win

The India vs Pakistan Super 4 clash in the Asia Cup 2023, billed by the official broadcasters as the ‘Greatest Rivalry’, ended in Rohit Sharma and Co. favour on Monday. Originally a one-day game, rain forced the match to be completed on the reserve day. And, the India vs Pakistan clash ended in a record win for the ‘Men in Blue’. Fiery centuries from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul took India to 356/2. Then Kuldeep Yadav picked a five-wicket haul as Pakistan managed just 128. The 228-run win was India’s biggest in terms of runs against Pakistan.

Kuldeep bagged his second ODI five-for and was the star with the ball. With this mammoth victory, India clinched the top spot in of Asia Cup 2023 Super 4s table.

Former Indian cricket team star Gautam Gambhir praised Kuldeep Yadav after the game as he analysed the individual performances. “Can’t look beyond Kuldeep Yadav. Yes, Virat Kohli has got a 100, KL Rahul got a 100, Rohit Sharma got a 50, Shubman Gill got a 50. On a wicket like this where it was swinging, seaming, if someone can get five wicket in seven overs, it’s brilliant. More importantly, I was surprised that Pakistan batters, who traditionally play spin really well, could not pick Kuldeep from his hand.

“I can understand if it was Australia, South Africa or new Zealand. They don’t play wrist spin that well. It just show the quality of the bowler. He has beaten people in the air. And he has beaten people off the wicket as well. That is something good for Indian cricket.”

Talking about the match, India posted an imposing 356 for 2, as Kohli (122 not out off 94 balls) and Rahul (111 not out off 106 balls), which was his sixth ODI hundred, pummeled a hapless Pakistan, whose chase ended at 128 for 8 as Kuldeep Yadav (5/25) scythed through them.

On the century count in ODIs, Kohli now stands just two behind Sachin Tendulkar‘s record 49.

Once India restarted the day from 147 for 2 in 24.1 overs, they needed Kohli and Rahul, the two overnight batters, to go big, and they did that in some style.

Along with Rahul, Kohli amassed 233 runs for the unbeaten third wicket stand – the highest ODI partnership for India against Pakistan.

En route to his 77th international century, Kohli also added some personal milestones to an already long list, becoming the fastest batsman to 13000 ODI runs and scoring his fourth ton in as many innings at the R Premadasa Stadium.

Kohli is only the second batter to achieve the feat of scoring four successive hundreds at a venue after South Africa’s Hashim Amla, who made this sequence at Centurion.

However, Rahul’s hundred was equally important from a team’s perspective.

Lakshmi Parvathi vist NTR Samadhi following Chandrababu Naidu’s arrest

Hyderabad: Lakshmi Parvathi, widow of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) founder and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. T. Rama Rao, paid tributes at his Samadhi here on Monday, a day after his son-in-law and former CM N. Chandrababu Naidu was sent to jail in an alleged skill development scam.

Lakshmi Parvathi, a leader of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and chairperson of Andhra Pradesh Telugu and Sanskrit Academy, offered floral tributes at NTR Marg at Hussain Sagar lake.

Her visit to NTR’s Samadhi came a day after Naidu was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days by a court in Vijayawada. He was shifted to Rajahmundry Central Jail in the early hours of Monday.

Earlier, she told Telugu news channel ‘Sakshi’ that she could not sleep last night due to over excitement following the Vijayawada court’s order.

She said she had long been waiting for this moment. “I am happy as I had a feeling for a long time that these crooks have locked up the god of justice. Finally I have seen some justice,” she said

Lakshmi Parvathi is the second wife of actor-turned-politician N. T. Rama Rao, who was popularly known as NTR. The TDP founder had married Parvathi, who was writing his biography, in 1993.

NTR died of cardiac arrest on January 18, 1995, a few months after Chandarbabu Naidu led a revolt against him and became the chief minister. Naidu and NTR’s children from his first wife were angry over Parvathi’s growing interference in party affairs and the administration.

Parvathi, who went into political oblivion after NTR’s death, had said that her only wish is to see the political downfall of Naidu, the man she believes responsible for NTR’s untimely death.

Parvathi had celebrated Naidu’s defeat in 2004 when Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR) led Congress stormed to power in the undivided Andhra Pradesh.

In 2012, she joined the YSRCP floated by YSR’s son Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.

After YSRCP came to power in Andhra Pradesh in 2019, ending the TDP rule, Lakshmi Parvathi was rewarded with the post of chairperson of Andhra Pradesh Telugu Academy.

2,000 dead, thousands missing as flooding sweeps Libya

Ahmed Mismari, the spokesperson for the Libyan National Army (LNA) that controls eastern Libya, said in a televised news conference that the disaster came after dams above Derna had collapsed, “sweeping whole neighbourhoods with their residents into the sea”.

Mismari put the number of missing at 5,000-6,000, Reuters reported.

Earlier on Monday, the head of the Red Crescent aid group in the region had said Derna’s death toll was at 150 and expected to hit 250. Reuters could not immediately verify either figure.

Libya is politically divided between east and west and public services have crumbled since a 2011 NATO-backed uprising that prompted years of conflict. The internationally recognised government in Tripoli does not control eastern areas.

In Tripoli, the three-person Presidential Council which functions as head of state in the divided country asked the international community to help. “We call on brotherly and friendly countries and international organisations to provide assistance,” it said.

Osama Hamad, the head of a parallel eastern-based administration, told local television that more than 2,000 were dead and thousands more missing.

After pummelling Greece last week, Storm Daniel swept in over the Mediterranean on Sunday, swamping roads and destroying buildings in Derna, and hitting other settlements along the coast, including Libya’s second-biggest city of Benghazi.

Videos of Derna showed a wide torrent running through the city centre where a far narrower waterway had previously flowed. Ruined buildings stood on either side.

Eastern Libya’s Almostkbal TV broadcast footage that showed people stranded on the roofs of their vehicles calling for help and waters washing away cars.

“The missing are in the thousands, and the dead exceed 2,000,” Osama Hamad told al-Masar TV. “Entire neighbourhoods in Derna have disappeared, along with their residents … swept away by water.”

Mismari said seven members of the LNA had died in the flood.

Rally in Indian stocks continues, Nifty scales new peak

New Delhi: Indian stock indices extended gains from the previous session, with Nifty touching its all-time high. The Nifty 50 breached the 20,000 mark for the first time ever on Monday.

This morning, Nifty was at 20,050.70 points, up 0.27 per cent. Sensex was at 67,376.18, up 0.37 per cent with some 400 points lower from its record-high on July 20.

“As our PM said, this is India’s Amritkal, so medium- to long-term opportunities in the Indian stock market will be fabulous. Any correction due to global factors will be a good buying opportunity in sectors like auto, banking, PSUs, IT, etc.,” said Parth Nyati, Founder at Tradingo.

“Optimism regarding India’s growth prospects in a low-growth world and a fast decelerating China has triggered this rally enabling the Nifty to cross the psychological 20000 mark,” said VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.

“In the near-term, the market is likely to consolidate around the present levels.” The benchmark indices added over 3 per cent each, respectively over the past week, after India’s economy grew firm in the April-June quarter.

Indian economy witnessing a firm GDP growth rate of 7.8 per cent in the first quarter (April-June) of 2023-24 is likely to have improved investors sentiment lately. With a GDP growth of 7.8 per cent, it continues to be the fastest-growing major economy.

For fresh cues, investors now await India’s retail inflation data for August, due at 5.30 pm today.

Retail inflation in India rose sharply in July to 7.44 per cent and in the process breached RBI’s 6 per cent upper tolerance target, largely due to a sharp spurt in vegetable, fruit, and pulses prices.

Coach Igor Stimac picked Indian football team on astrologer’s advice; reports

New Delhi: Indian football team coach Igor Stimac picked the national squad for the crucial Asian Cup match against Afghanistan in June 2022 on the advice of an astrologer from Delhi-NCR, said a report.

Interestingly, it is also said that the astrologer was introduced to Stimac by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

According to the Indian Express report, the then secretary-general of AIFF, Kushal Das has admitted that he introduced the two to each other in May 2022. Stimac had sent a list with the names of a probable 11 for the game, which was a must-win to remain in contention for the championship.

The match was to take place on June 11, and the list was shared on June 9.  “The astrologer replied against each player’s name with remarks like “Good”, “can do very well. Needs to avoid overconfidence”, ” a below average day”, “a very good day for him but might get over aggressive” and “not recommended for the day”, it said.

India played four matches during May and June 2022. These were against Jordan, Cambodia, Afghanistan and Hong Kong. The report further said that Stimac shared the list of players with the astrologer before every match. He also shared injury updates and substitution strategies.

India imposes anti-dumping duty on Chinese steel for 5 years

India imposes anti-dumping duty on Chinese steel for 5 years

New Delhi: India has imposed an anti-dumping duty on some Chinese steel for a period of another five years, according to an official gazette by the Ministry of Finance.

An anti-dumping duty of USD 613 per tonne has been imposed on flat-base steel wheels from China, according to a notification on Monday. Such duty on steel wheels was imposed in 2018 and now the ministry has recommended a continued imposition for another five years.

“The Indian industry does not gain any undue advantage on the extension of existing duties,” it said.

“The evidence of export price indicates that the Chinese exporters are exporting the goods to third countries at significant dumped and injurious prices,” the notification said, explaining the rationale behind the move.

The notification added there is healthy competition in the Indian market and continuation of the duties would not deprive the domestic industry of any requirements.

Simply put, anti-dumping duties are taxes imposed on imported goods in order to compensate for the difference between their export price and their normal value, if dumping causes injury to producers of competing products in the importing country.

Asia Cup: Rahul, Kishan conundrum for India, set to face Pakistan in Super 4 match

Colombo: The Indian team management’s predicament to choose between KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan will be the dominating theme amid the usual edgy emotional quotient, when they face arch-rivals Pakistan in the most-awaited Super 4 match of the Asia Cup here on Sunday.

Alongside focusing on the team goals, the Indian management will want to assemble the best possible 11 in the park against Pakistan, whom the Rohit Sharma-led outfit is facing for the second time in the event. But for that, they need to find answers for the aforementioned puzzle, and hope that rains will stay away despite adding a controversial reserve day to the match on Monday.

The return of Rahul to the squad has widened the pool of players to select from, but that has also given them a happy headache. Kishan has impressed everyone in the last month or so, smashing four fifties in as many matches – three against the West Indies and one against Pakistan in the Asia Cup Group A match at Pallekele last week.

During the process, Kishan has also diversified himself, underlining his comfort in positions ranging from opening to No. 5. The 25-year-old Jharkhand man opened the innings against the Caribbeans while batted in the middle-order against Pakistan. Additionally, Kishan brings in a bit of variety to the Indian batting line-up as he is a left-hander.

So, it seems that Kishan has everything going for him. But Rahul’s claim for the No. 5 position is hard to ignore despite the fact that the Bengaluru cricketer has not played an ODI since March this year, courtesy a thigh injury and the ensuing phase of post-surgery convalescence.

The 31-year-old remains one of India’s steadiest ODI batters since 2019. In that year, he made 572 runs from 13 matches at 47.67. The trend continued in the following years – In 2020: 443 runs from 9 matches at 55.38, in 2021: 108 runs from 3 matches at 88.50, in 2022: 251 runs from 10 matches at 27.89 and in 2023: 226 runs from 6 matches at 56.50.

If one filters the stats further, while batting at No. 5, Rahul has amassed 742 runs from 18 matches at 53 with a hundred and seven fifties. Those are strong numbers and his wicket-keeping offers an additional arrow in the quiver. Rahul also engaged in intense wicketkeeping drills at nets on Friday, further indicating his readiness to make the return.

So, the team management will have to take a hard call on the match day. While that decision is important for the team to achieve the desired balance, they will also be eager to start the Super 4 with a win notwithstanding the combination they field.

Pakistan have already bagged two points after beating Bangladesh by 7 wickets at Lahore, and another win will place them comfortably on the way to the final. So, India will also want to enter the log sheet but they will have to counter a potent Pakistan bowling attack that can make an impact irrespective of the nature of the pitch.

Of course, Rohit and other Indian batters will be wary of the high-paced incoming deliveries of Shaheen Shah Afridi, but the Pakistan bowling unit has other equally explosive performers. Haris Rauf, with his express pace, is currently topping the Asia Cup bowling chart with 9 wickets from three matches, and seemed to have emerged from the shadows of Afridi (7 wickets).

While Naseem Shah also has taken 7 wickets, ensuring no let off point for opposition batters. Pakistan has an edge on paper in this department, but India will believe that they have the ammunition to strike back in kind.

The return of Jasprit Bumrah, who skipped the league match against Nepal, will bolster India’s bowling, while Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur can play the efficient support cast role. But once these two teams enter the arena, factors like playing 11, form, past records etc go irrelevant. It will be a storm force collision on the field.
