South China floods kill several people

Nearby residents were advised to stay at home after more than 70 crocodiles escaped in Maoming, a city near the coast in western Guangdong province, AP reported citing the Chinese media.

An emergency official was quoted as saying that 69 adult crocodiles and six juveniles had escaped. Some have been captured, but the operation was difficult because of the depth of a lake they are in, the media reports said.

No injuries have been reported.

Further west, seven people died and three are missing after multiple landslides in the city of Yulin in the Guangxi region, the official Xinhua News Agency reported late Monday. Heavy rain on Sunday and Monday triggered the landslides.

The rain caused flash floods in Hong Kong last week, killing two people. Parts of the city were flooded again following a heavy downpour Monday.

Cardiff: Former England cricketer Andrew Flintoff made his first appearance in nine months at the Sophia Gardens on Friday as he joined up with the England squad for their one-day international series against New Zealand.

The 45-year-old was hospitalised last December after he suffered facial injuries in an accident while shooting for Top Gear at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey last year, according to Sky Sports.

England played their first ODI match of the one-day international series gainst New Zealand. However, they lost the game by eight wickets. Flintoff who has played in 79 Tests and 141 one-day matches for England, joined the England team and pictured with him.

England captain Jos Buttler was delighted that Flintoff joined the squad. After the match, Buttler said as quoted by Sky Sports, “So he’s been starting to do some stuff in cricket. It’s just great for him to be around, he’s obviously an England legend and it’s just nice to have him around the group.” The England ODI captain cleared that Flintoff has not been given specific role, he was just there to observe. “He’s not been brought in with any specific role, just to be around and observe. A few of the lads can pick his brains a little bit and he’s settled in really well. It’s great to have him with us. Just for this series,” Buttler said.

In the match, New Zealand opted to bowl first. England got off to a solid start with 80-run partnership between Harry Brook (25 in 41 balls, with two fours) and Dawid Malan (54 in 53 balls, with nine fours). England then sunk to 101/3.

Then an 88-run stand between Buttler (72) and a returning Ben Stokes (52 in 69 balls with three fours and a six) and a 77-run partnership between Buttler and Liam Livingstone (52 in 40 balls, with three fours and three sixes) helped England reach 291/6 in 50 overs. Rachin Ravindra (3/48) and Tim Southee (2/71) were the pick of the bowlers for NZ.

In the chase of 292, openers Devon Conway and Will Young (29) helped NZ get off to a solid start, forming a 61-run stand. Then followed a 56-run partnership between Conway and Henry Nicholls (26 in 30 balls, with three fours). After England reduced NZ to 117/2, Conway (111* in 121 balls with 13 fours and a six) and Daryl Mitchell (118* in 91 balls with seven fours and seven sixes) dismantled the English bowling with their hitting, forming a match-winning 180-run partnership. Conway was adjudged as the ‘Player of the Match’ for his century.

''Sorry. Not Sorry'': Ashneer Grover Reacts To Case Over His Indore Cleanliness Remark

''Sorry. Not Sorry'': Ashneer Grover Reacts To Case Over His Indore Cleanliness Remark

On Indore’s top rank in cleanliness survey, Ashneer Grover said the tag has been ‘bought’.

Entrepreneur Ashneer Grover has posted a strong-worded tweet in response to a defamation case filed against him for his comments on Indore’s top rank in the Centre’s cleanliness survey. He reacted to the row by saying ”Sorry to Indore” but adding that he was ”not sorry to any politician”.

Notably, a non-cognisable offence information report was registered against him on Monday after a video showed him commenting on Indore’s top rank in the Centre’s cleanliness survey and purportedly claiming it had been “bought”. The city has remained on top in the Centre’s Swachh Sarvekshan for six consecutive years.

”Sorry. Not Sorry. Sorry to Indore. You’ve got great people and a city. But politicians everywhere have got no chill. Unnecessary politics being made out of a statement made in jest in a playful conversation on Bhopal vs. Indore. Where the audience had fun – no offence was meant. None taken by anyone. No one getting offended now was even present in the room,” Mr Grover wrote on X.

See the tweet here:

He further said that he doesn’t care about an FIR, commenting that he wasn’t ”a pushover” and ”won’t be bullied”.

He added, ”Not Sorry to any politician. Ever. No one. Any party. Fire an FIR. File a case. It doesn’t matter – I am not a pushover – won’t be bullied. Don’t make an issue where there is none. It might be an election year – but people are smart. Indori people – super smart. I’ll come to Indore when I wish, as many times I wish…’.

He concluded by saying that Bhopal is his favourite, and also called it ”India’s best city.”

In an event in Indore, Mr Grover was heard in the video saying, “See, there is a concept – playing to the gallery, that is, wherever you go, praise it saying I have never seen such a nice city. Now the problem with me is that for three-four years I have heard that Indore is the cleanest city…you have bought the survey. It’s a simple thing.”

Mr Grover, however, immediately clarified he was not saying there was filth in Indore, and that he meant several construction works are going on in the city. Indore’s Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava called his statement ”an insult to the hard work of the city’s people and sanitation workers for cleanliness.”

Transformation of Palamuru: CM KCR succeeds where others failed

Transformation of Palamuru: CM KCR succeeds where others failed

Hyderabad: The story of Palamuru was one of parched lands and a scramble for water for decades. Before the reorganization of revenue units following State formation, Mahabubnagar was the largest district in the State.

Endowed with fertile soils, the district has more than 35 lakh acres of cultivable land. Krishna, one of the major rivers of India, is flowing by. Many of its tributaries—Tungabhadra, Bhima and Dundhubi traversing across the district added to its irrigation potential.

But the never ending spectre of drought and scarcity conditions reduced it to one of the nine most backward districts notified in the country. The ground reality, which was quite appalling, triggered a mass exodus. More than half of the 40 lakh population deserted homes in search of fresh meadows.

Successive governments in the undivided State made lavish promises to revive the fortunes of Palamuru. But the rulers were found to be low on delivery. All the assurances made by them turned out to be mere lip service.

The real transformation of Palamuru began only with the self rule. Ever since Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao took over the reins of the State administration, he focused on the water-starved southern region and started addressing the needs of the region adopting a multi-pronged strategy.

The Palamuru Ranga Reddy Lift Irrigation Scheme (PRLIS) is now holding out hope to transform the very economic profile of the southern region of the State. Envious of his success, forces within the State and elsewhere remained bent upon scuttling the progress of works on the project, but the Chief Minister did not relent. Outwitting all such challenges that came in the way of implementation of the project, he moved ahead and the multi–stage lift irrigation scheme will be a reality soon.

With the drinking water component to be inaugurated by the Chief Minister on September 16 and the irrigation component of the project also to be fulfilled soon, over eight lakh acres will get irrigation. Over 84,000 acres of Achampet constituency, which will be benefitted with the construction of the Umamaheswara Lift Irrigation Scheme would be part of it.

The efforts by the Chief Minister in addressing the irrigation and drinking water need of the people in the region paid off in the form of Kalwakurthy project extending irrigation to 1.6 lakh acres. The Nettempadu and Bhima projects helped in giving water to 1.2 lakh acres and 1.4 lakh acres respectively.

The Koilsagar project could bring another 8000 acres under irrigation. The Chief Minister’s close monitoring of the works in progress facilitated completion of the ongoing works on the canal system and distributaries of the irrigation projects. On the whole, the erstwhile Mahabubnagar will have about 20 lakh acres with assured access to irrigation once PRLIS is completed.

The Palamuru region is known for its highest number of ponds that meet a major part of its irrigation needs. Many of the ponds and tanks had vanished in the undivided State. But now, the picture is changing. The Ganapasamudram pond in Kalwakurthi that was built by the Kakatiyas was filled to the brim after 30 years. The ponds and tanks have an irrigation potential of over 2.7 lakh acres. Before the division of the State, hardly 50,000 acres used to get water from these.

US state of Florida recognises November as Hindu Heritage Month

New York: Calling Hinduism as one of the world’s largest and oldest religions and acknowledging the contributions of the community, a county in the US state of Florida has recognised November as Hindu Heritage Month.

Broward County joins a list of states from across the country, including Georgia, Texas, Ohio, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Virginia, etc, to commemorate Hindu heritage, culture, values, and traditions. November is a significant month for Hindus as they celebrate the festival of lights, Diwali, which falls on the 12th of the month this year.

Stating that millions of Americans celebrate the festival every year, including those in the county, the recent resolution called Diwali a “time of peace, joy and new beginnings where people of all ages, especially young children, light oil lamps, burst fireworks and distribute sweets”.

Welcoming the move, CoHNA (Coalition of Hindus of North America), a Hindu advocacy group in the US, said on Tuesday: “The Resolution also acknowledges Hinduism as one of the world’s largest and oldest religions, along with its diverse traditions, collectively known as Sanatana Dharma, with core values of acceptance, mutual respect, freedom and peace.”

The resolution also acknowledged the community’s contributions towards yoga, ayurveda, meditation, food, music, arts, etc has enriched the cultural fabric and have been widely adopted in American society.

It highlighted that the Hindu philosophy of Vedanta and ideals such as selfless service, non-violence, etc have inspired many American intellectuals and leaders, from Martin Luther King, Jr, John D. Rockefeller, Henry David Thoreau, to Aldous Huxley, and many others. Indians are the largest Asian group in Florida with a population of 153,968, according to recent estimates.

Recently, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp declared that October will be celebrated as ‘Hindu Heritage Month’ in the state.

Activists slam UK hosting of ‘world’s worst arms dealers’ in London

Activists have planned a two-week resistance campaign against Britain’s hosting of the “worst arms dealers,” including those from Israel, in the world’s largest weapons fair.

The campaigners are expected to hold events in denunciation of the Defense and Security Equipment International (DSEI) in London that begin on Tuesday as a venue for repressive regimes like Tel Aviv to sell and buy lethal weapons.

Among those attending will be more than 40 Israeli arms companies, which are complicit in human rights abuses against Palestinians.

In a statement released on Monday, the UK-based Campaign Against the Arms Trade (CAAT) described the biennial DSEI as a “marketplace in death and destruction,” saying Israeli firms, like Elbit, “battle test” their weapons on Palestinians in the occupied territories.

Emily Apple, CAAT’s media coordinator, noted that the companies taking part read as a “who’s who of the world’s worst arms dealers” and that peace activists are “coordinating a fortnight of resistance.”

“Israel is an apartheid state, and it is disgusting that the UK is not only selling weapons to Israel but encouraging Israeli arms companies to sell their weapons in London,” she added.

“Deals done at DSEI will cause misery across the world, causing global instability, and devastating people’s lives. Representatives from regimes such as Saudi Arabia, who have used UK-made weapons to commit war crimes in Yemen, will be wined and dined and encouraged to buy yet more arms.”

Apple further lashed out at the UK government for repeatedly showing that it “cares more about the money made from dodgy deals with dictators than it does about the people whose lives will be ruined by the sales.”

“Arms dealers will not be welcome when they arrive in London as they will be met with protesters who will ensure they have to face the reality of the consequences of their deadly trade,” she said.

Neymar ‘grateful’ after breaking Pele’s Brazil scoring record

Belem: Neymar expressed gratitude and humility after surpassing Pele as Brazil’s all-time leading scorer.

Neymar struck twice as the five-time world champions romped to a 5-1 win over Bolivia in their opening World Cup qualifier in the northern Brazilian city of Belem, reports Xinhua.

“I’m very happy, lost for words,” news outlet Globo Esporte quoted the 31-year-old as saying.

“I never imagined reaching this record and right now I want to say that passing Pele does not mean that I am better than him, or any player in the national team.”

The Al Hilal forward now has 79 goals in 124 appearances since his international debut in 2010. Pele, regarded by many as the greatest player in history, scored 77 times in 92 official matches for his country.

“I always wanted to write my name in the history of Brazilian football and the Brazilian team,” Neymar said. “Today I did that. To my family and all my friends who are here, I am very grateful.”

Brazil’s next qualifier for the 2026 World Cup – to be played in the United States, Canada and Mexico – will be against Peru in Lima on Tuesday.

Cow Vigilante Monu Manesar, Wanted For Double Murder And Riots, Detained

Manesar is a key accused in the murder of two Muslim men from Rajasthan.

New Delhi:

Cow vigilante Monu Manesar, who was wanted in connection with the murder of two men from Rajasthan and for inciting the violence in Nuh in July, has been detained by the Haryana Police.

The Bajrang Dal activist is a key accused in the murder of two Muslim men from Rajasthan, whose bodies were found in a car in Haryana in February.

Nasir, 25, and Junaid, 35, who were residents of a village in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district, were allegedly abducted by cow vigilantes on February 15. The next day, their bodies were found inside a car that had been set ablaze in Loharu in Haryana’s Bhiwani.

Sources in the Haryana Police said Manesar was detained on Tuesday under bailable sections of the Information Technology Act. They said he is likely to get bail by evening and the Rajasthan Police will take him into custody in the double-murder case.

“Our colleagues in the Haryana Police have informed us that Monu Manesar has been detained. After their legal procedures are complete, we will begin our procedure,” said Mridul Kachawa, superintendent of police of Bharatpur in Rajasthan

Manesar is also accused of inciting the violence that broke out in Haryana’s Nuh in July, in which at least six people were killed.  The violence had begun on July 31, during the ‘Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra’ organised by the Vishva Hindu Parishad, and then spread to adjoining areas, including Gurugram.

Rumours of Manesar attending the Yatra had allegedly triggered the communal clashes. The cow vigilante, who was on the run in the murder case, had posted a video a few days before the procession, claiming that he would attend it. He had also exhorted his supporters to come out in large numbers.

This had allegedly enraged some people from the Muslim community, who viewed it as a threat, and triggered a heated exchange on social media.

Manesar’s aide, Bittu Bajrangi, had also been arrested in connection with the violence last month, and was later granted bail.
