Suryakumar Yadav needs minor mindset shift to crack ODI code: AB de Villiers

Suryakumar Yadav needs minor mindset shift to crack ODI code: AB de Villiers

Durban: Former South African captain AB de Villiers feels that India’s No. 1 T20 batter Suryakumar Yadav needs a slight tweak in his mindset in order to replicate his success in the 50-over format.

The world No. 1 in shortest format, who has managed to hold onto his spot in India’s squad for the upcoming World Cup, averages a poor 24.33 in ODIs, with only two half-centuries in 24 innings with a strike-rate of 101.38.

Suryakumar himself has referred to numbers as “really bad”. Suryakumar, who has modelled his batting in De Villiers 360-degree hitting style, has found a fan in the South African.

“You guys know I’m a big fan (of Surya). He plays in a similar manner to how I used to play, but in ODIs, he hasn’t cracked it yet,” the South African said on his YouTube channel ‘AB de Villiers 360′.

“It is a tiny little mind switch that he’s got to make, and he’s got all the ability and capabilities that he needs to do that,” he added. “I am very relieved to see SKY in the World Cup squad, I’m very happy about it. I hope he gets this opportunity in this World Cup,” he said.

“Looking at the balance of the Indian squad, he might not start, but a World Cup is a long tournament. So let’s see what happens then,” he added.

Asked about Sanju Samson’s exclusion from the World Cup squad, De Villiers said: “I don’t have to say much about him. We know what he’s capable of.” “I’ve been on the receiving end for RCB, watching him score 92 not out at the Chinnaswamy. The ball was flying all over the place. He’s also got the conventional cricket game and technique where he plays with a straight bat, plays the ball nicely. He’s got a good pull and hook shot.

“He’s got everything in his bag. It’s all in the mind and it’s a matter of adapting to ODI and gameplans and the World Cup and the pressure thereof. So yes, two great players,” he said.

Playing the World Cup at home will put Team India under huge pressure and De Villiers’ mantra for Rohit Sharma and Co is to “go fearless” in their bid to replicate the 2011 success.

“I think India’s squad is incredible, really, really strong. The only worry I have for India is playing at home. They played in India, they won. There will be huge pressure. That’s the only big obstacle in my opinion.

“But if they can get rid of that and just free themselves up, I see no problem for India. Control what you can control. But go fearless.

“Fearless is the word I’m looking for the Indian squad. If they can do that, they’ll go a long way and most probably lift that trophy,” he said.
India will begin their campaign against Australia in Chennai on October 8.

The World Cup will kick-start with 2019 finalists England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad on October 5.

Hyundai sales up 15 pc in August at 71,435 units

New Delhi: Hyundai Motor India on Friday said its wholesales increased by 15 per cent year-on-year to 71,435 units in August.
The automaker had dispatched 62,210 units to its dealers in August last year.

Domestic sales rose 9 per cent to 53,830 units last month, from 49, 510 units in the year-ago period, the South Korean automaker said in a statement.
Exports increased 39 per cent to 17,605 units last month from 12, 700 units in August 2022, it added.

“The company’s sales number of 71,435 units is a key indicator of an ever-growing acceptance of our products in both domestic and export markets,” Hyundai Motor India COO Tarun Garg noted.

The festival season in India has kicked off on a positive note with strong Onam sales in Kerala market and this is an indication of the festive fervour in other parts of the country in the coming months, he added.

Demand for SUVs in the company’s portfolio remains robust, contributing more than 60 per cent to domestic wholesales in August, Garg said.

Flooding leaves thousands dead, missing in eastern Libya after dams collapse

At least 2,000 people have been killed and thousands more are missing after a devastating flood hit the city of Derna in eastern Libya, resulting in the collapse of two dams, authorities say.

Ahmed Mismari, spokesperson for the eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA) that controls eastern Libya, said the disaster struck when the two dams above Derna collapsed following a heavy storm and rain.

The dams’ collapse swept the “whole neighborhoods with their residents into the sea,” he said.

Mismari put the number missing at 5000 to 6000, adding seven members of the LNA had also died in the flood.

He said the floods have affected many cities along the eastern coast running all the way to Benghazi, the second most populous city.

Libya plunged into deadly chaos after the overthrow and killing of its long-serving ruler Muammar Gaddafi following a bombing campaign by the US-led NATO military alliance in 2011.

Since then the country has been divided into a UN-recognized government in western Libya and a parallel institution in the east of the country.

Osama Hamad, the head of a parallel eastern-based administration said, “The missing are in the thousands, and the dead exceed 2,000.”

“Entire neighborhoods in Derna have disappeared, along with their residents … swept away by water,” he told al-Masar TV on Monday.

The head of Libya’s Emergency and Ambulance authority, Osama Aly, explained after the dam collapse “all of the water headed to an area near Derna, which is a mountainous coastal area.”

According to Aly, residences situated in valleys were swept away by forceful muddy currents that carried vehicles and debris.

The disruption of phone lines in the city has complicated rescue operations, rendering workers unable to access Derna due to the extensive damage.

Aly told the Al Hurra channel earlier that the authorities were not prepared for the magnitude of the calamity.

“Libya was not prepared for a catastrophe like that. It has not witnessed that level of catastrophe before. We are admitting there were shortcomings even though this is the first time we face that level of catastrophe,” he said.

Several countries have conveyed their condolences and extended assistance to Libya, as rescue teams work diligently to locate survivors amidst the debris and rubble.

“The United Nations in Libya is closely following the emergency caused by severe weather conditions in the eastern region of the country,” stated the United Nations Support Mission in Libya in a post on X.

The rain experienced over the weekend is attributed to the residual effects of a strong low-pressure system, officially named Storm Daniel by the national meteorological services in southeastern Europe.

This storm caused severe flooding in Greece before moving into a tropical cyclone causing dangerous conditions in the Mediterranean Sea and coastal regions.

The remnants of this storm are currently impacting northern Libya and are expected to move eastward towards northern Egypt gradually.

The anticipated rainfall for the next two days could exceed 50 mm, a significant increase from the average of less than 10 mm recorded in this region throughout September.

Around 10,000 people missing in Libya floods

“We can confirm from our independent sources of information that the number of missing people is hitting 10,000 so far,” Tamer Ramadan, the head of the IFRC delegation in Libya, told reporters in Geneva via video link from Tunisia.

Around a quarter of Libya’s eastern city of Derna was wiped out by floods after dams burst in a storm, and more than 1,000 bodies have been recovered so far, a minister in the administration that controls the east said on Tuesday.

Ramadan said, “The death toll is huge and might reach thousands.”

The IFRC could soon launch an appeal for emergency funding to support Libya’s flood victims.

“The challenges are ranging between access to basic health facilities for health services, shelter and shelter management, food and non-food items,” Ramadan said, Reuters reported.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein has reassured Iran that his country remains committed to its security agreement with the Islamic Republic regarding the expulsion of anti-Iran terrorist groups from the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.

Hussein made the remarks in a joint press conference with his Austrian counterpart Alexander Schallenberg in the Iraqi capital city of Baghdad on Tuesday.

“We have taken the necessary measures to purge armed groups from areas along the border between Iraq and Iran. And for that purpose, I will travel to Tehran tomorrow to hold talks on the matter with Iranian authorities,” the top Iraqi diplomat announced.

He added, “Our constitution does not allow the Iraqi soil to be used as a launching pad for attacks on neighboring countries. At the same time, we do not accept the national sovereignty of Iraq to be undermined.”

The Iraqi foreign minister also described Baghdad’s relations with Tehran as strong and deep-rooted, emphasizing that such ties denounce the use of violence to settle differences.

“Iraq will not allow its territory to be used by some groups to attack Iran,” Hussein stated.

The comments came a day after Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kan’ani said the ultimatum given to Iraq to disarm anti-Iran separatist groups based in Kurdistan regime will not be extended.

“Iran’s stance is completely clear. According to the agreement reached with the Iraqi government, the final deadline for the disarmament of the terrorist and separatist forces in Iraq’s Kurdistan region ends on September 19 and that deadline will not be extended in any way,” Kan’ani said in a weekly press briefing in Tehran on Monday.

He noted that the Iraqi government has taken measures in this regard and has stressed that it will honor its commitments.

Also on Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian warned that the presence of terrorists in the Iraqi Kurdistan region runs counter to the friendly ties between the two nations and contravenes the Constitution of Iraq.

Asia Cup: My workload is twice or thrice as much as anybody else’s, says Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya shed light on the unique challenges and mindset of an all-rounder, saying his workload in a match is twice or thrice more than anybody else’s

Asia Cup: My workload is twice or thrice as much as anybody else’s, says Hardik Pandya

Colombo: Ahead of India’s Super Four match against Pakistan in the Asia Cup, all-rounder and vice-captain Hardik Pandya shed light on the unique challenges and mindset of an all-rounder, saying his workload in a match is twice or thrice more than anybody else’s.

After the 2019 ODI World Cup ended in England, Pandya underwent a major back surgery, which limited his all-round performing abilities. But a change in lifestyle and fitness approach has resulted in him being back to his best and being a reliable all-rounder for the side ahead of 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup in India.

“As an all-rounder, my workload is twice or thrice as anyone else. When a batter in the team goes and bats and finishes his batting and is heading home, I’ll still be bowling after that. So for me, all the managing, all the pushing, and everything happens during the sessions or my training or my pre-camp season,” said Pandya to Star Sports.

On match days, Pandya sees his role gets adjusted as per the conditions and requirements in a particular situation and backs himself to get the job done. “When the game arrives, it is more about whatever the team requires, and the managing side goes out of the park, and it is more practical calls that how many overs are needed for me. Because if 10 overs are not needed, there is no point in me bowling 10 overs, but if 10 overs are needed, then I’ll be bowling.”

“I always believed that I give myself a chance to succeed, which is by reading the game, which is by backing myself because I have always believed that when we go as a believer, when I’m standing there, yes, my ten players, my ten brothers are around me, but at the same point of time I’m alone.”

He further elaborated, “When bowling, I have to back myself to the fullest because the opposition, the batter, they want me to make a mistake. At the same point of time, as a batter, yes, two people are batting, he is there with me fighting, but there are also eleven on the ground against me, and at the same point of time, it could be the crowd or anything.”

“So what I have realised is that no matter what happens, you have to back yourself, you have to believe that you are the best in the world. That does not guarantee you success, but at the same point of time, it does give you and it does guide you to work towards success, so practically back yourself.”
