Gujarat’s double engine sarkar makes farmers wait for fertilizer

Hyderabad: Videos and pictures of farmers lining up their shoes and slippers and waiting for their turn to collect fertilizer in Rapar tehsil of Kutch district, Gujarat, have exposed the failure of the BJP government in ensuring basic help to farmers.

A video of the incident went viral on Saturday with netizens questioning the efficiency of the BJP government that has been in power there for over three decades.

They also questioned the ability of the so called double engine sarkar, which has been making tall claims. According to reports, a large number of farmers arrived during the fertilizer distribution process which started after several days and since the weather was hot, they kept their footwear in the queue and stood in the shade for their turn to come.

The incident exposed the real face of the BJP, which has been making tall claims about ending the shortage of fertilizer in the country. Last year too, Aravalli district in Gujarat faced an acute shortage of urea and long queues of farmers outside urea shops was a common sight in the district.

Social media influencer Putta Vishnuvardhan Reddy posted a video of the incident on (formerly Twitter).

“The farmers in the double engine state of Gujarat make serpentine queues of shoes & slippers to take fertilizers. The BJP is in ruling for the past 22-years in Gujarat, for 9.5-years at the centre and this is the state of failed affairs in the home state of PM Modi,” he said.

Iran to join BRICS PAY to dodge problems caused by SWIFT

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf says the country will soon join BRICS PAY, an electronic banking system used by the BRICS alliance of emerging economies, amid plans by Tehran to dodge banking restrictions caused by US sanctions.

Speaking in an open session of the Iranian parliament on Saturday, Qalibaf said that Iran will access BRICS PAY as of January 1, 2024.

“That gives us a major opportunity to work with big countries,” he said while elaborating on growing trade between Iran and original BRICS members, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Iran was invited to join BRICS on August 24 as part of a decision by the bloc to accept six new members.

Iran’s membership came nearly two months after it joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a bloc also led by major economies like China, Russia and India.

Qalibaf made the remarks about BRICS PAY after a visit to South Africa where he attended a meeting of BRICS parliament speakers.

He said Iran’s access to the banking system would eliminate the need for access to SWIFT, a Belgium-based financial messaging system which has banned Iran from its services over the past years because of US sanctions.

The Iranian parliament speaker said China, Russia, India and South Africa account for some 30% of Iran’s entire trade, adding that BRICS PAY would be a major boost to Iran’s efforts to maintain and increase its trade relations with the rest of the world.

He described the creation of the payment system as a major achievement for BRICS because it facilitates trade by reducing the need for access to Western-dominated systems like SWIFT.

A statement on BRICS PAY website says the system seeks to enable businesses and consumers within the bloc and beyond “to securely and seamlessly make and receive payments in their local currency” while trying to “reduce the cost and complexity of international payments”.

Islamabad: The Pakistan security forces in Balochistan registered the first information report (FIR) regarding the Mastung suicide blast which killed at least 55 people, ARY News reported on Saturday.

On Friday, 55 people, including a police officer, lost their lives and dozens of them were left injured in a suicide blast near a 12th Rabiul Awwal procession in Balochistan’s Mastung district in Pakistan.

According to the ARY News, the preliminary report of the incident has been submitted to the Balochistan caretaker Chief Minister Ali Mardan Khan Domki.

Apart from this, the Domki has also chaired a high-level session to review progress on the investigation into the Mastung suicide blast.

Caretaker CM said that the initial evidence of the Mastung blast came forth and the culprits will be brought to justice soon.

He also assured that the families of the deceased would get the compensation money and the government would bear all the treatment expenses of injured people.

On September 29, District Health Officer (DHO) Abdul Rasheed Shahi confirmed the casualties. City Station House Officer (SHO) Mohammad Javed Lehri said a police official was among the casualties, according to a report by the Pakistan-based daily.

Dr Saeed Mirwani, chief executive of Shaheed Nawab Ghous Bakhsh Raisani Memorial Hospital, said dozens of people were undergoing treatment at his hospital while more than 20 injured have been referred to Quetta for medical assistance, Dawn reported.

According to Mastung Assistant Commissioner (AC) Atta-ul-Munim, the explosion took place when people were gathering for an Eid-i-Miladun Nabi procession near Madina Masjid at Alfalah Road.

He identified the DSP who had been killed as Nawaz Gishkori.

The banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan denied it had carried out the attack. Balochistan interim Information Minister Jan Achakzai said rescue teams had been sent to Mastung. He further said that the critically injured people were being taken to Quetta and that an emergency had been imposed in all the hospitals.

Pakistan’s Interim Interior Minister Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti condemned the blast and expressed his grief at the loss of lives. He said that all resources were being put to use during the rescue operation, Dawn reported.

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said he was deeply saddened by the cowardly attack on innocent people.” He asserted that such heinous acts had no place in our country”.

He further said, “May justice be swift for those responsible.”

Mirabai To Undergo Tests On October 3 To Find Out Extent Of Thigh Injury

Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu will undergo tests on October 3 in Mumbai to find out the severity of the thigh injury she suffered at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. Despite feeling some pain in her thigh during the warm-ups, Chanu went ahead with her six attempts in the women’s 49kg competition at the continental showpiece, which led to injury on Saturday. Chanu, who will fly back to India on Sunday, will be undergoing tests at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute in Mumbai. “We have to wait and find out the extent of her injury. She can’t put down her foot as of now. Tomorrow we will have some idea depending on if she is able to walk,” head coach Vijay Sharma told PTI over the phone from Hangzhou.

“We are trying to do all the the tests on Monday but since it’s 2nd October lets see if it is possible. Otherwise it will happen on Tuesday. We have spoken to a reputed doctor in Mumbai and booked appointment for October 4,” he added.

Earlier in the day, the 2017 world champion had managed to lift the 117kg bar which rested on her collarbone, ready to be jerked, but the Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist’s hip gave up and she crumbled on the floor.

Lying on her back in agony, Sharma had to lift Chanu and carry her away from the platform in his arms. Had the two-time Commonwealth Games champion succeeded in lifting 117kg, she would have won the bronze medal.

After winning medals at the Olympics, World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Asian Championships, an Asian Games medal was the only silverware left to adorn the 29-year-old’s illustrious trophy cabinet.

“After snatch I asked her to pull out but she insisted on going through. She is mentally very tough and insisted that she’ll mange the lift and stand on the podium,” Sharma said.

Immediately after failing to clear her first 86kg snatch attempt, a grimace had spread on the former world champion’s face. But she persisted.

Sharma said had everything worked out, Chanu would have logged the much-anticipated 90kg lift in snatch.

“Mira (Chanu) has been lifting 90kg in training for the past 2-3 months. She lifted that in the selection trials as well.

“It’s unfortunate, Mira was oncourse for a medal. She was fit also. It’s all God’s doing. Last year she was at peak fitness and looked strong but the Asian Games were postponed by a year due to COVID,” Sharma said.

At the Asian Championships in May, a dodgy hip had forced her to skip the last two attempts, dashing her hopes of a medal.

This monsoon across Telangana marked by delayed onset, intense heat and record rains

Hyderabad: The curtains have officially fallen on the southwest monsoon season, marking the transition of weather in Hyderabad and elsewhere in Telangana to a post-monsoon period, which usually falls between October and December.

This year’s monsoon, though marked by its delayed onset and erratic behaviour, ultimately left a significant imprint on Hyderabad.

The city’s meteorological journey has been a rollercoaster ride, with weather enthusiasts and residents experiencing a mix of anticipation and surprise. The monsoon’s debut was nothing short of a nail-biter, with a delay of 10 days raising concerns across the city.

June brought intense heat and sparse rains, prompting the issuance of high-temperature alerts, warning of scorching temperatures. Relief finally arrived towards the end of June, as the heavens opened up, bringing much-needed showers. Notably, the highest contribution to Hyderabad’s southwest monsoon rainfall came from the months of July and September.

However, August proved to be a disappointment, as the city saw a consistent dearth of proper rains. July, on the other hand, presented a contrasting picture, with copious rains drenching the entire State, including Hyderabad.

The period from July 19 to the month’s end witnessed impressive downpours, with July 27 standing out as a day of exceptional rainfall. According to data from the Telangana State Development Planning Society, this year’s monsoon concluded with an abundance of rain, totalling 769.5 mm in Hyderabad.

This figure exceeded the normal mark of 615.4 mm, with a deviation of 25 per cent. Remarkably, all areas in the city were classified under the categories of ‘excess’ or ‘normal’ rains.

While Saroornagar, Saidabad, Hayatnagar, Uppal, Bandlaguda, and Ameerpet received ‘normal’ rainfall, all other localities witnessed an ‘excess’ downpour.

Shaikpet and Maredpally stole the spotlight in the monsoon rains data, boasting the highest rainfall in the last three years during the monsoon months. Shaikpet alone received a whopping 910.7 mm rainfall, closely followed by Maredpally with 908.5 mm. As the southwest monsoon prepares to bid adieu to Telangana, including Hyderabad, in the second week of October, residents can expect a gradual decrease in rainfall starting from October 2.

With winter on the horizon, Hyderabad can look forward to a drop in temperatures starting from November to January, welcoming the season of chilly nights.
