Biden warns of dangerous threats to US democracy

Washington: In a stark warning about the ongoing existential threats to US democracy, President Joe Biden said “there’s something dangerous happening in America now”.

In an address on Thursday in Arizona to honour his late friend Republican Senator John McCain, the President said: “There’s an extremist movement that does not share the basic beliefs of our democracy: The MAGA movement.”

Using the acronym for former President Donald Trump’s political movement, “Make America Great Again”, Biden went on to say that “there’s no question that today’s Republican Party is driven and intimidated by MAGA Republican extremists”, CNN reported.

“Their extreme agenda, if carried out, would fundamentally alter the institutions of American democracy as we know it.”

The warnings came a day after seven candidates sparred on Wednesday during the second Republican presidential debate, which Trump skipped.

This was the first time Biden publicly called out his predecessor’s antidemocratic behavior since the latter was criminally charged for his attempts to subvert the 2020 election results.

He said the former President was guided by “vengeance and vindictiveness” and not by the “Constitution or decency”.

“Trump says the Constitution gave him the right to do whatever he wants as President… I’ve never heard presidents say that in jest,” CNN quoted Biden as saying.

He also referred to Trump’s recent suggestion that chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Mark Milley could be executed, saying that Republican silence on the comment was “deafening”.

“We should all remember: Democracies don’t have to die at the end of a rifle. They can die when people are silent, when they fail to stand up.”

Also during his address, the President called McCain, whom Biden was friends with for decades, a “brother” and announced funding to construct the McCain Library.

Biden’s remarks came at a moment of political uncertainty, as he faces persistent questions about his age, disapproval of his handling of the job and an indictment of his son, Hunter.

House Republicans also held their first hearing in an impeachment inquiry into the President on Thursday.

Due to the protest, several trains on the Ambala-Shri Ganganagar route were cancelled on Thursday.

As many as 18 trains of the Firozpur division, have been affected as members of various farmers’ bodies squatted on train tracks in Ferozepur.

Rupee rises 9 paise to 83.10 against US dollar in early trade

Mumbai: The rupee rose 9 paise to 83.10 against the US dollar in early trade on Friday amid a retreating dollar versus major rivals and positive cues from equity markets.

Massive selling of equities by foreign investors and an upward trend in crude oil prices, however, capped the rise of domestic currency, forex dealers said.

The Indian unit opened strong at 83.13 against the US dollar and touched the highest level of 83.09. It later traded at 83.10 against the greenback, registering a gain of 9 paise from its previous close.

On Thursday, the rupee settled 3 paise higher at 83.19.

Analysts said higher interest rates and US bond yields are prompting foreign investors to stay in the selling mode in Indian capital markets, while the rupee witnessed some recovery due to a significant decline in India’s current account deficit (CAD).

The CAD has dropped to USD 9.2 billion, or 1.1 per cent of GDP in the first quarter of the current fiscal from USD 17.9 billion (2.1 per cent of GDP) a year ago, the Reserve Bank of India said on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, declined by 0.19 per cent to 106.02.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading 0.05 per cent higher at USD 95.43 per barrel.

On the domestic equity market front, the BSE Sensex climbed 84.00 points or 0.13 per cent to 65,592.32 in early trade. Nifty advanced 37.75 points or 0.2 per cent to 19,562.30.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital market on Thursday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 3,364.22 crore, according to exchange data.

Indian stocks in green after touching four-week low

New Delhi: Indian stock indices edged marginally higher on Friday morning after touching nearly a four-week low the previous session, tracking Asian peers and relatively firm overnight US market cues.
Benchmark Sensex and Nifty were 0.2 per cent higher each from their Thursday closing. Nifty metal, pharma, PSU bank sectoral indices were the top movers this morning.

“The ‘triple whammy’ of up-trending dollar, US bond yields and Brent crude is showing signs of easing. If this trend continues it will facilitate a recovery in markets. Stability in the US market yesterday also can be a supportive factor,” said VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.

Lately, the indices slumped sharply after the US central bank, while keeping its interest rate steady in the September meeting, hinted that it may again hike rates going ahead if need be, in its fight against inflation.

Rising global crude oil prices and subsequent strengthening of the US dollar also weighed on the financial markets.

Going ahead, the RBI monetary policy scheduled for October 4-6 will be monitored closely by the investors. RBI typically conducts six bi-monthly meetings in a financial year, where it decides interest rates, money supply, inflation outlook, and various macroeconomic indicators.

RBI in its past three meetings – April, June, and August — held the repo rate unchanged at 6.5 per cent.

The repo rate is the rate of interest at which RBI lends to other banks.

According to SBI Research, the monetary policy committee is expected to yet again pause the key repo rate.

“Domestically, we believe at 6.50%, we are in for a prolonged pause as seasonality of inflation is tapering first…,” SBI Research report, authored by Soumya Kanti Ghosh, Group Chief Economic Adviser, said recently.

Kabul: UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed has called for putting pressure on the Taliban to ensure women’s and girls rights to education and work in Afghanistan, TOLO News reported.

Mohammed while speaking at a press conference, said that the situation of women and girls is getting worse day by day in Afghanistan.

The UN Deputy Secretary-General said: “There is a Women in Islam conference that is coming up that will be taking on some of these issues, you will know that the OIC had sent a mission recently to Afghanistan so we think the neighbourhood’s important as well (to) create that pressure and that momentum, they’re part of the international community and they’ve got to put pressure to make sure that women’s rights are back where they should be in Afghanistan.” As per some women’s rights activists, the Taliban should provide the rights of employment and education to women and girls, in order to attract the trust of the world.

A women’s rights activist, Tafsir Seyaposh, said: “The Taliban must first establish credibility at the national level if it hopes to earn credibility at the international level. How long would they continue to disregard women and how far they would go to violate their rights.”

“It is the responsibility of the world and the current authorities of Afghanistan to pay serious attention to the alarming situation that Afghan women have and the situation that has isolated Afghanistan,” said Suraya Paikan, another women’s rights activist, according to TOLO News.

The Taliban has not yet commented on the remarks of UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed. It previously denied the violation of women’s and girls rights saying that their rights are ensured in Afghanistan in accordance with the Islamic principles.

Meanwhile, as many as 11 countries have put pressure on the Taliban for violating women’s rights in Afghanistan during the United Nations (UN) meeting, reported Khaama Press.

Countries including the United States, France, Britain, Japan, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, Switzerland, Ecuador, Albania, and Malta, referred to the treatment of Afghan women and girls by the Taliban as “gender-based violence”, according to a joint statement. The Women’s Rights Council representative further called for global support to define ‘gender apartheid’ in international law.

The statement also stated that systematic violations of women’s rights have taken away their freedom and forced gender segregation, constituting instances of gender-based violence, Khaama Press reported.
