Geriatric care must be part of primary healthcare in India where one in every five persons will be a senior citizen by 2050

India is undergoing a rapid demographic transition with the population of elderly people growing at an unprecedented rate, throwing up several challenges for the country, particularly in geriatric care. So far, it is widely believed that the country enjoys a unique demographic advantage, being home to one of the highest populations of adolescents and young people in the world. However, this may be changing in future. A relatively young India today will turn into a rapidly ageing society in the coming decades.

According to the United Nations report, ‘India Ageing Report 2023’, the share of the elderly population — people above 60 years — will reach 20.8% of the total population at the national level by 2050, compared with 10.1% in 2021. This means that one in every five persons will be a senior citizen. By the end of the century, the elderly will constitute over 36% of the total population, a scenario similar to the one being faced by some European countries and Japan.

A sharp growth in the elderly population is observed from 2010 onwards along with a decline in the age group of below 15 years, indicating a rapid shift toward an ageing population. The UN Population Fund (UNPF) report said there are 14.9 crore persons aged 60 years and above in 2022, comprising around 10.5% of the country’s population and this is estimated to increase to 15% by 2036. The report has brought to the fore the need for strengthening social security, including old-age pension, across a landscape where the majority of workers are employed in the informal sector devoid of such benefits.

The UNPF report represents an extensive examination of the living conditions and welfare of older individuals in India. As India ages, it is imperative to ensure that our elderly population has access to the care and support they need to live healthy, dignified and fulfilling lives. Older persons have contributed significantly to society, and they deserve nothing less than our best efforts to ensure their well-being. Addressing the unique healthcare needs of seniors must become a priority.

India needs to make substantial investments, both in terms of finances and human resources, in geriatric care. It acquires urgency in view of the steady weakening of traditional support systems over the decades and the rise of nuclear families. At present, most of the medical colleges don’t have specialised training wings in geriatrics. This gap needs to be addressed immediately keeping in view the future demand. The geriatric care is now confined to some tertiary hospitals in urban areas and is prohibitively expensive.

In fact, geriatric healthcare services must be made part of the primary healthcare services. The elderly population grapples with not just their personal health issues but also the biases, intolerance of the younger generation and, in most cases, lack of financial independence.

Olympics officials overrule French govt. ban on Muslim hijab

Olympics officials have overruled the French government’s ban on Muslims wearing hijab headscarves during the 2024 Paris Games.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) declared on Friday that athletes participating in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games were free to wear a headscarf known as a hijab in the athletes’ village, just days after France’s sports minister banned it for the host country’s athletes.

French Sports Minister Amelie Oudea-Castera said earlier this week that French athletes were required to abide by the country’s principles of secularism, thus banning female athletes from wearing hijab during the Paris Olympics.

France, which hosts one of Europe’s largest Muslim communities, has implemented laws designed to adhere to the country’s principle of secularism, known as “laicite”. On Sunday, Oudea-Castera echoed the secular principle insisted by French President Emmanuel Macron, saying the government was opposed to any display of religious symbols during games.

On Sunday, Oudea-Castera echoed the secular principle insisted by French Presein Emmanuel Macron saying the government was opposed to any display of religious symbols during games.

“For the Olympic Village, the IOC rules apply,” an IOC spokesperson said. “There are no restrictions on wearing the hijab or any other religious or cultural attire.”

The vast majority of the approximately 10,000 athletes at the Olympic Games reside in apartments in the Olympic Village and share common spaces, including dining halls and recreational areas.

“When it comes to competitions, the regulations set by the relevant International Federation (IF) apply,” the IOC spokesperson said.

The sports competitions at the Olympics are organized and overseen by individual international sports federations. There are 32 sports in the program of the Paris Olympics.

“Since this French regulation relates to the members of the French team only, we are in contact with the CNOSF [French Olympic Committee] to further understand the situation regarding the French athletes,” the spokesperson said.

United Nations rights office spokeswoman Marta Hurtado rebuked the French government for the ban on hijab.

“No one should impose on a woman what she needs to wear or not wear,” Hurtado told reporters in Geneva.

“Restrictions on expressions of religions or beliefs, such as attire choices, are only acceptable under really specific circumstances,” she said, pointing out that forcing the Muslim athletes to observe the dress code advocated under “laicite” secular principle was tantamount to “discriminatory practice.”

Modern world owes too much to Islamic civilization: Raeisi

President Ebrahim Raeisi made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the 5th edition of the Mustafa Prize held in the central Iranian city of Isfahan on Friday with the participation of 150 religious scholars from 40 countries.

President Raeisi congratulated the birth anniversary of Holy Prophet Muhammad on the Islamic nations and said that the Prophet attached great importance to observing ethical issues in pursuing science.

Raeisi went through terrible events such as the wars that the non-fruthful science has created for the world, noting that “Scientists who use science to destroy humans have non-divine science.”

He stressed that science and knowledge have to serve mankind, adding “If science is for making a fortune, colonization and exploitation, it will destroy the human being.”

“In the history of Islam, we witness that after the beginning of the mission of the Prophet, Islamic civilization started to form… The Islamic civilization reached its apex in the third and fourth centuries…. it changed the conditions and created a civilization…the world owes too much to the Islamic civilization,” President Raeisi further asserted.

“In Islamic Iran, it was proved that Muslims can progress a lot in the scientific field,” Raeisi concluded.

Hyderabad: Union Minister for Tourism G Kishan Reddy accused Telangana government of not cooperating with the Centre in establishing airports in the State to enhance air connectivity.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Kishan Reddy claimed that though the centre was ready to develop airports in the State, the BRS government was not providing the required resources and land for the up-gradation. Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia too had written letters to the State government urging it to allocate land for Mamnoor airport in Warangal.

“I have written letters to the Chief Minister to cooperate with the Centre in establishing airports in the State, but so far there is no response from him. Because of the adamant attitude of the State government not a single new airport has been established in the State in last nine years,” he alleged.

The union Minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be dedicating Rs. 13,546 crore worth of project to the nation on October 1 and Rs. 8021 crore worth of project during his visit to Nizamabad on October 3. Washington:

The White House said on Friday it was still possible to avoid a government shutdown, but that it was up to hardline Republican lawmakers to resolve the impasse.

“There is still a chance,” Office of Management and Budget (OMB) director Shalanda Young told reporters at a briefing.

“I’m still remaining an optimist that we have a day and a half to work out, in one corner, what is needed to take the deal” that Republicans in the House of Representatives have been offered by the Senate for a stopgap, she added.

Cauvery water row: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah holds meeting with retired judges of Supreme Court, irrigation experts

Farmer unions and pro-Kannada organisations have called for a Karnataka Bandh today after the Cauvery Regulatory Committee (CWRC) ordered to release of 3,000 cusecs of water at Biligundlu to Tamil Nadu starting from September 28 till October 15, 2023. In the earlier spell, it was 5,000 cusecs.

Cauvery water row: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah holds meeting with retired judges of Supreme Court, irrigation experts

Bengaluru: Hours after Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) directed Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to its neighbouring Tamil Nadu every day until October 15, state Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a meeting with retired judges of the Supreme Court and others.

In the meeting with the retired judges of the top court, irrigation experts, and former Advocate Generals over the Cauvery River water-sharing issue, state Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar was also present. This came after CWMA, on Thursday, upheld the decision of the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC), and directed Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu every day, until October 15.

Meanwhile, Spiritual guru Sadhguru took to the social media platform, X, and said that bringing large-scale tree-based agriculture and vegetating the 83,000 sq kms of the Cauvery basin is the only way Cauvery will flow 12 months of the year in abundance. “Mother Cauvery does not know which state we belong to but she is suffering with depletion and drying up during the summer months.

Bringing large scale tree based agriculture and vegetating the 83,000 sq kms of Cauvery basin is the only way Cauvery will flow 12 months of the year in abundance. Let us strengthen and enhance Mother Cauvery rather than fighting over depleted waters. Let wisdom prevail,” Sadhguru said in his post on X. Moreover, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Tejasvi Surya has lambasted the Congress government for its “very casual” approach to the issue.

The MP from Bengaluru South alleged that the Congress is approaching the issue in a “duplicitous manner” to help its INDIA bloc partner, DMK in Tamil Nadu.

There is no coordination between the CM and the deputy CM. The state government is very casual in its approach. Are they trying to approach this issue in this duplicitous manner because it will help their INDI alliance partner, the DMK government for 2024? he asked.

“The state government is releasing Cauvery River water to Tamil Nadu. If Cauvery River water is going to Tamil Nadu like this, the people of Bengaluru will not have drinking water. The Karnataka government has failed to present its case before CWMA (Cauvery Water Management Authority), Surya said while speaking to ANI on Friday. He said that releasing additional water to Tamil Nadu would severely compromise Karnataka’s drinking water needs. The BJP MP said this “very grim reality” needs to be presented before the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA).

“The Water situation in Karnataka is extremely grim. The state has suffered a 60 per cent deficit in rainfall this year. The state needs about 106 TMC of water, it has only 50 TMC of water. Out of the 34 talukas in the Cauvery basin, 32 are declared a severe drought hit. Farmers do not have water to support their one-standing crop. In this scenario, releasing additional water to Tamil Nadu will severely compromise the state’s drinking water needs, the BJP MP told ANI.

Though Karnataka approached the Supreme Court appealing against the direction of CWRC saying that it cannot release the water to Tamil Nadu because of poor rainfall this year, the court refused to intervene in the direction. Many protestors were seen raising slogans that the Cauvery River belongs to them.

The police said that more than 50 people from the organisations have been taken into custody to maintain law and order amid the Bandh call.

Manipur Tribal Leader's Canada Speech Raises Khalistani Links Allegations

Manipur Tribal Leader's Canada Speech Raises Khalistani Links Allegations

North American Manipur Tribal Association (NAMTA) Canada chief Lien Gangte in Surrey

New Delhi:

A speech by the leader of a Canada-based Kuki-Zo tribes group from Manipur over the ethnic violence back home has sparked a massive controversy. The event in early August was held at the same gurdwara in Canada’s Surrey, whose chief and Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was shot dead by unidentified people in June.

Lien Gangte, the Canada chapter chief of the North American Manipur Tribal Association (NAMTA), in his address condemned what he called “attacks on minorities in India” and asked Canada for “all possible help”.

NAMTA had posted a video of the event on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) on August 7. It deleted the videos much later when the row between India and Canada surfaced following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s claim last week that “Indian government agents” were involved in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Nijjar.

Mr Gangte, on behalf of the Kuki-Zo tribes to which he belongs, spoke at length about the ethnic violence between the hill-majority tribes and the valley-majority Meiteis.

“On May 4, a mob attacked our house and tried to kill my father. He is 80 years old… They looted our house and set it on fire. My elder brother and his family ran with only the clothes they were wearing. Manipur has been burning since May 3. Over 120 of our people have died, over 7,000 homes looted and burnt, hundreds of churches burnt and 200 villages in the valley razed,” Mr Gangte said.

“The authorities did not do anything to control the violence. The Manipur Police instead encouraged the rioters. We were removed from Imphal valley viciously, so we consider this ethnic cleansing. They burnt alive a seven-year-old boy, his mother and a relative in an ambulance… And they say we should talk about peace and normalcy,” Mr Gangte alleged.

“… When all this was happening in India, where was Prime Minister Narendra Modi… He went to the US, France, Egypt, except the place that needed his attention the most,” the NAMTA Canada leader said. “No minority is safe in India. Whether Muslim, Sikh, Christians. We condemn attacks on minorities in India. We request all possible help from Canada,” Mr Gangte said.

India’s intelligence agencies are keeping an eye on NAMTA’s activities and the Kuki-Zo group’s alleged links with Khalistanis, The Times of India reported on Thursday, quoting unnamed officials.

After Mr Gangte’s speech, NAMTA members and supporters of the Khalistani terrorist Nijjar also sat for a meeting, First Post reported on Thursday, quoting unnamed intelligence sources. The development has alarmed intelligence agencies, it said.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Sources in the Manipur government told NDTV they have seen the social media posts on NAMTA’s activities in Canada. “We have seen the NAMTA video. It’s worrying, but we are confident the intelligence agencies are tracking them, considering the situation in Manipur. We are at the moment working hard to bring normalcy and peace,” a senior officer in the Manipur Home Department told NDTV, requesting anonymity.

A Kuki-Zo communications professional who has been tracking the Manipur crisis told NDTV that the NAMTA video has been blown out of proportion, and its critics are forcing a conspiracy where none exists. The video came out in early August and no one had any problem with it until the Canada-India row over Nijjar’s killing started.

“This talk of NAMTA’s association with Khalistanis is a big lie. It has no credibility whatsoever except for troll handles posting this. Tomorrow, if trolls start calling you a terrorist, you will have to give a statement?” the communications professional said, requesting anonymity.

Over 180 have died in the ethnic violence in Manipur that began on May 3 between the Kuki tribes and the Meiteis over the Meiteis’ demand for Scheduled Tribes category status. Thousands have been displaced and are living in relief camps and prefabricated houses.
