US Navy to test SEALs for PED steroids following trainee’s death

A US Navy SEAL team emerges from the surf to continue an amphibious assault launched from a rigid-hulled inflatable boat (RHIB).

The United States Navy (USN) will begin for the first time randomly testing SEALs and special warfare troops for steroids and other Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs), officials say, well more than a year after the death of a trainee.

The US Naval Special Warfare Command will start from November 1 random urinalysis testing for PEDs, Rear Adm. Keith Davids, head of Naval Special Warfare Command, wrote in a forcewide message issued on Friday.

“The unauthorized and unsupervised use of PEDs is what we are trying to identify and prevent. Nevertheless, we realize that some of our teammates may have legitimate medical conditions that need to be treated with prescription supplementation. If that is the case, we encourage our teammates, who haven’t already, to speak with their medical providers to get diagnosed and properly treated,” he said.

Navy SEALs, Army’s Delta Force, Green Berets and Ranger Regiment are among the largest and best known American Special Forces within the US Army and Navy, which are often called to perform the military’s most sensitive and dangerous missions that pose physical and mental challenges. The pressures of such risky missions prompt some of these forces to use PEDs, although officials claim that the numbers are small.

The new testing policy comes after SEAL trainee Seaman Kyle Mullen lost his life in February last year. A command investigation into his death following “Hell Week” training raised questions regarding the use and prevalence of steroids and other PEDs among trainees and the wider SEAL force and special-warfare combatant crew (SWCC).

“This incremental, random force-wide testing initiative is far more than a regulatory step—it’s a steadfast commitment to the health, safety, and operational readiness of every member of the NSW community,” Davids added.

According to the service, the command, on a monthly basis, will randomly select units to participate in the testing, and 15 percent of those units will undergo urinalysis.

Table Tennis: Sutirtha-Aihika Reach Women's Double Semis, Assures Bronze

Sutirtha Mukherjee and Aihika Mukherjee shocked world champion Chinese pair Chen Meng and Yidi Wang to enter the women’s doubles semifinals, assuring India a historic table tennis medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou on Saturday. In the quarterfinals, Sutirtha and Aihika won 11-5, 11-5, 5-11, 11-9 and the victory over World No. 2 Chinese duo is all the more significant because India have never won a medal in the women’s doubles event in the Asian Games. The Indian players never allowed their superior opponents to settle down right from the go.

The Chinese duo was expected to roll over their opponents, and it happened precisely the opposite, as the Indians won the first game in just 8 minutes.

The trend followed in the second game too, as the Indians wrapped it in just 9 minutes as the Chinese players committed several unforced errors, particularly on the forehand.

The home side players mounted a brief fightback, winning the third game.

But the Indians regrouped quickly to assert themselves in the fourth game.

The epic winning moment came when Meng sprayed her forehand into the net.

Earlier, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Manika Batra produced an error-filled game to make an early exit in the quarterfinals of the women’s singles table tennis competition.

Manika went down against world No. 4 Yidi Wang of China 8-11, 12-10, 6-11, 4-11, 14-12, 5-11 and her defeat also marked the end of India’s campaign in the singles event at the Hangzhou Games.

The ace Indian paddler lost the first game 8-11, as she showed a distinct weakness on her backhand.

Even when she won the second and fifth games, it was more about the Chinese player making unforced errors in her eagerness to close out the points.

The classic example came in the fifth game when the Chinese sprayed an easy forehand while leading 11-10, which allowed Manika to claw back.

But in the sixth game, Wang regained her focus and peppered Manika’s backhand with powerful shots that the latter failed to reply properly.

Manika tried to fight back with a couple of powerful forehands but Wang’s astonishing retrieving ability left the Indian frustrated.

Fittingly, a backhand error from Manika that brought the match to an end.

Wang’s laser-guided forehand found Manika fumbling as her backhand return sailed well wide of the table.

Earlier, India’s men’s double pair of Manush Shah and Manav Thakkar also bowed out in the quarterfinals.

They were beaten by South Korean pair Woojin Jang and Jonghoon Lim 8-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-6, 9-11 in the last eight.

The Indians were leading 6-2 in the fifth game which later transpired to 9-9, but they squandered the chances to go down against the Koreans.

“We fought really well. We took the game to 9-9 in the last set. We were very close to winning but we have to take the learnings and move forward,” said Manush after the defeat.

On the experience of playing against the World No. 1 Korean pair, Manush said: “They are probably the toughest opponents. We had some strategies and moves that we wanted to execute, and which we did. But in the end, we couldn’t prevail.”

UP: Court reserves order on plea to hand over keys of basement at Gyanvapi complex to DM

Varanasi: A court here on Saturday completed the hearing on a petition seeking the handing over of keys to the basement at the Gyanvapi mosque complex to the Varanasi district magistrate and reserved its order for October 4.

Authorities had barricaded and locked the basement known as Vyas ji ka Tehkhana in 1993. Prior to it, the basement was used for worship by Somnath Vyas, a priest, according to petitioner Madan Mohan Yadav.

Yadav has pleaded that the key be handed over to the district magistrate, fearing that the contents of the basement could be tampered with.

District Judge AK Vishvesh on Friday posted the matter to Saturday for further hearing after accepting the Kashi Vishwanath Trust’s plea for more time to prepare its argument.

Yadav claimed that during the hearing, the advocate for the Kashi Vishwanath Trust said that they have no objection to the plea for handing over the keys of the basement to the district magistrate.

“The court has now reserved its order on the matter for October 4,” district government counsel Rajesh Mishra said.

The Archaeological Survey of India is carrying out a scientific survey of the Gyanvapi mosque premises, next to the Kashi Vishwanath temple here, to determine whether the 17th-century mosque was constructed over a Hindu temple.

Islamabad:

Pakistan’s top investigation agency on Saturday declared former prime minister Imran Khan and ex-foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi guilty in a case related to the alleged disclosure of state secrets, popularly known as the cipher case.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) submitted the charge sheet against Khan, the chairman of the Tehreek-e-Insaf party and his deputy Qureshi, both currently detained in jail on judicial remand, to a special court established under the Official Secrets Act, the Pakistan Observer website reported.

Imran Khan, 70, was arrested last month after a case was filed against him for allegedly violating the Official Secrets Act by disclosing a secret diplomatic cable (cipher) sent by the country’s embassy in Washington last year in March.

The FIA has requested the court to start the trial of the PTI leaders and sentence them according to the law, it said.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi, 75, is the vice chairman of PTI. Former general secretary of PTI Asad Umar has not been named in the FIA’s list of accused, while former principal secretary Azam Khan has been presented as a strong witness of the FIA against Imran Khan, GeoTV, a prominent news channel, reported and added, the challan also carries Azam Khan’s statement recorded under sections 161 and 164.

The FIA has also attached the transcript of Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s speeches made on March 27.

The Pakistan Observer also reported that the FIA has submitted a list of 28 witnesses along with the charge sheet in the court. Names of foreign secretary Asad Majid, former foreign secretary Sohail Mahmood, and additional foreign secretary Faisal Niaz Tirmizi are included in the list of witnesses, it said.

Earlier on September 26, it was the third time that Imran Khan was sent to jail on remand. His judicial remand was initially extended till September 13 and then again till September 26, along with Qureshi’s.

On the same day, Imran Khan was shifted to the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi from Attock prison, a day after the Islamabad High Court ordered authorities to relocate him to the high-security jail.

Incidentally, a joint investigation team on Thursday submitted charge sheets that informed an anti-terrorism court here that the jailed former prime minister and several other top leaders of his party were directly involved in orchestrating the unprecedented anti-government violence on May 9.

A large number of PTI activists had attacked military installations, police vehicles, and other public and private properties in Lahore, according to the cases registered with the police. The vandalism at the Lahore Corps Commander’s House (Jinnah House), Askari Tower, and the Shadman police station were some of the major incidents during the violence.

Meanwhile, Matwada police booked a case against the students and consultants following a complaint by the KNRUHS Registrar Dr S Sandhya on Friday. It is learnt that the police had even interrogated two students on Saturday. They had launched a search for the consultant who helped them upload the fake certificates to secure admission.

Two teams were constituted for the inquiry about the fake certificates in Vijayawada and the state of Andhra Pradesh. Meanwhile, a police official said that they were treating the students ‘victims’, and the arrest and investigation of Nageshwar Rao would only decide the role of students in the case.

However, university officials said that students must have known that they were submitting fake certificates at the time of registration. “Students will definitely know the category in which they are registering at the time of registration and it is not possible to register without the knowledge of the students,” said a university official.
