Rabat: The death toll from the powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck central Morocco has increased to 632, with 329 injured person, state TV reported on Saturday.

Morocco’s Interior Ministry said in a statement that the fatalities were reported from the provinces and municipalities of Al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua and Taroudant.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicentre was in the High Atlas Mountains, 71 km south-west of Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5 km, the BBC reported.

The quake struck at 11.11 p.m. and videos on social media showed people fleeing on the roads, damaged buildings and rubble-strewn streets.

The tremors were also reportedly felt in the capital Rabat, some 350 km away from the epicentre, as well as the cities of Casablanca and Essaouira.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, accompanied by a number of business leaders, is visiting Ukraine on Saturday for talks with his counterpart to show support

Tokyo: Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, accompanied by a number of business leaders, is visiting Ukraine on Saturday for talks with his counterpart to show support for the war-torn country and emphasize his country’s backing of sanctions against Russia, the Japanese foreign ministry said in a statement.

Hayashi, who had been on a tour of the Middle East and Poland earlier this week, will meet with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba in Kyiv. This is his first visit since the war began over a year ago.

His visit comes six months after Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s trip to Ukraine.

Hayashi is also set to visit Bucha, one of the hardest-hit towns on the outskirts of Kyiv, said a Japanese foreign ministry official who requested anonymity, saying he is not allowed to speak to the media on the record.

He also said Hayashi will convey Japan’s determination to support Ukraine’s economic recovery and reconstruction from the damages of war “from a uniquely Japanese perspective” through cooperation between the public and private sectors.

Tokyo plans to host a Japan-Ukraine conference aimed at economic reconstruction of the war-ravaged country sometime at the end of this year or early next year.

The foreign minister is bringing along a delegation of Japanese business representatives, including Rakuten Group CEO Hiroshi Mikitani and Teppei Sakano, president of a medical equipment maker Allm Co., the official said.

The business delegation aims to assess the situation in Ukraine on the ground and communicate with the Ukrainian side about its reconstruction needs, the ministry said.

Japan donated more than USD 7 billion to Ukraine, mostly for humanitarian assistance, and military equipment limited to non-lethal weapons because of the legal limitations under the Japanese pacifist Constitution.

Kishida visited Ukraine in late March, as the last G7 leader to do so ahead of the summit in May he hosted in Hiroshima, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s last-minute appearance dominated attention.

Snacking on junk spells trouble: Study links it to higher stroke and heart woes!

Snacking on junk spells trouble: Study links it to higher stroke and heart woes!

Washington: Researchers discovered that only half of the individuals matched the nutritional value of their meals and snacks. This discrepancy negatively affects health indicators including blood sugar and fat levels, and resolving it may be as easy as changing one’s diet.

With unhealthy snacks, 25 per cent of people negate the positive effects of healthy meals, which raises their risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease.

Researchers from the School of Life Course & Population Sciences and ZOE outline the snacking behaviours of 854 participants from the ZOE PREDICT project in their findings, which were published today in the European Journal of Nutrition.

Dr Sarah Berry from King’s College London and chief scientist at ZOE said, “Considering 95 per cent of us snack, and that nearly a quarter of our calories come from snacks, swapping unhealthy snacks such as cookies, crisps and cakes to healthy snacks like fruit and nuts is a really simple way to improve your health.”

Contrary to what is often believed, the analysis demonstrated that snacking is not harmful as long as the snacks are nutritious. Compared to those who don’t snack at all or who nibble on harmful foods, people who frequently eat high-quality snacks like nuts and fresh fruits are more likely to have a healthy weight. Analysis revealed that high-quality snacks can help improve metabolic health and reduce appetite.

However, a quarter of the individuals claimed to consume unhealthy snacks in addition to healthy main meals. Poor-quality snacks, such as heavily processed foods and sweets, made people feel hungry and were linked to worse health markers.

Unhealthy snacks have been connected to higher BMI, visceral fat mass, and postprandial triglyceride concentrations, all of which are linked to metabolic diseases like obesity, stroke, and cardiovascular disease.

Your health may also depend on when you eat your snacks. Research has shown that snacking after 9 p.m. was linked to blood indicators that were worse than at any other time. Snacks at this time typically consisted of calorie-dense, high-fat and sugar items.

Dr Kate Bermingham from King’s College London and senior scientist at ZOE said, “This study contributes to the existing literature that food quality is the driving factor in positive health outcomes from food. Making sure we eat a balanced diet of fruit, vegetables, protein and legumes is the best way to improve your health.”

66 still missing in Maui wildfires, says Hawaii Governor

Honolulu: Hawaii Governor Josh Green said that 66 people were still unaccounted for following the devastating wildfires on Maui Island.

The wildfires that erupted on August 8 and raged through Lahaina in Maui, reducing the oceanside historic town to ashes, reports Xinhua news agency.

According to the authorities, the fires claimed 115 lives and destroyed swathes of indigenous cultural heritage, making it one of the worst natural disasters in Hawaii’s history and the deadliest US wildfires in over a century.

“Today marks one month since deadly fires devastated Lahaina and other areas of Maui,” said Green in an address on Friday, adding that search and rescue teams have completed search and rescue efforts in Lahaina.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation reported 66 people “still unaccounted for based on calls and emails they’ve received”, the Governor said.

“This is the number that initially was over 3,000 and then dropped to 385 last week.”

More than 7,500 survivors who were displaced have been relocated from shelters to 29 hotels and hundreds of Airbnbs, according to the Governor.

He said that the state’s Attorney General Anne Lopez has been conducting a full investigation into the cause of the fires and the emergency response via an independent third-party private organisation.

New Delhi: India on Saturday circulated a new paragraph among the G20 countries to describe the Ukraine conflict in the joint leaders’ declaration to be unveiled at the end of the two-day summit of the grouping, diplomatic sources said.

With consensus eluding on the paragraph relating to the Ukraine conflict, India on Friday circulated a draft summit declaration among the member countries without the paragraph on the geopolitical issue in an attempt to hammer out a positive outcome.

India’s circulation of the new text on Ukraine came as the G20 leaders began deliberations on pressing global challenges on the first day of the annual summit of the bloc.

A lack of consensus on the text on Ukraine may result in the summit ending without a joint declaration, which will be a first for the grouping.

There was no consensus on the text to describe the Ukraine issue at the G20 Sherpa meeting that took place in Nuh district of Haryana from September 3-6. Indian negotiators believe that there will be consensus on the new paragraph that was circulated on Saturday morning, the sources said.

The response of the Western powers as well as China and Russia to the new text was not known immediately. Two sources had earlier said the G7 countries are not agreeable to any leaders’ declaration without reference to the Ukraine conflict.

The G20 operates under the principle of consensus and there have been apprehensions that lack of a common view may result in the summit ending without a joint declaration.

Both Russia and China had agreed to the two paragraphs on the Ukraine conflict in the Bali declaration but backtracked this year, creating difficulties for India.
Almost all key meetings held under India’s G20 presidency, including those of finance and foreign ministers, could not come out with consensus documents in view of opposition from Russia and China to any text referring to the Ukraine conflict.

It’s for China to explain Xi Jinping’s absence from G20 Summit: US

It’s for China to explain Xi Jinping’s absence from G20 Summit: US

New Delhi: As Chinese President Xi Jinping skipped the G20 Summit in New Delhi, the US on Saturday said that it was up to the Beijing government to explain his absence from the multilateral event.

“It’s incumbent upon the Chinese government to explain why its leader would or would not participate,” said Jon Finer, the US Deputy National Security Adviser, while speaking to reporters in New Delhi.

He further added that it was “unfortunate” if China wasn’t committed to the success of the grouping.

“Some have speculated China’s absence indicates that it is giving up on the G20, building an alternative world order, that it will privilege groupings like the BRICS,” Finer added.

Chinese premier Li Qiang is representing the country at the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has also skipped the summit amid Moscow’s ongoing war against Ukraine.

He is being represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

India has played down the absence of both the leaders from the high-profile Summit, saying the main focus is to evolve consensus among all members on key issues facing the multilateral event.

Wipro expands presence with new office in Jefferson city, Missouri

New Delhi: IT giant Wipro on Friday said it has inaugurated a new office in Jefferson City, Missouri for over 500 employees.

The 75,000-square-foot office will act as main support centre for some of Wipro’s clients in healthcare and government sectors. The office includes a healthcare solutions innovation lab for digital-first solutions for Medicaid and Medicare programmes.

The Indian IT company will partner with Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG), Missouri, to attract local talent, Wipro said in a statement.

First Lady of the state & co-chair of JAG, Missouri, Teresa Parson was the guest of honour for the inauguration of the office on September 14.

She said, “I’m delighted that Wipro has chosen Jefferson City as its base in Missouri. The opening of this new workspace will boost the local economy as well as attract new talent to the region.”

Governor of Missouri Mike Parson said, “The establishment of Wipro’s new facility in Jefferson City reflects the State of Missouri’s growing reputation as a destination for talent. UK sanctions Iran officials in fresh interventionist move

The sanctions target senior Iranian officials including Iran’s minister for culture and Islamic guidance, his deputy, the mayor of Tehran, and an Iranian police spokesman, Britain’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

“Today’s sanctions on those responsible for Iran’s oppressive laws send a clear message that the UK and our partners will continue to stand with Iranian women and call out the repression it is inflicting on its own people,” British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly claimed.

The so-called sanctions were imposed on the first anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini, an Iranian woman who died in police custody in the capital Tehran in September last year.

The 22-year-old died in a hospital in Tehran days after she was detained by police on September 15.

Despite clarification on the circumstances surrounding her death, protests erupted in the country, which later turned violent and led to attacks on security officers and acts of vandalism against public property as well as police vehicles and ambulances.

Comprehensive investigations carried out by the Iranian Parliament and Iran’s Legal Medicine Organization ruled out the use of force on the woman, pointing to her medical history and brain surgery years ago.

The foreign-backed violent riots claimed dozens of lives from both security forces and innocent people as the Western media and Persian-language news networks continued to instigate unrest in Iran.

Since sporadic foreign-backed riots took place in Iran last summer, Western countries led by the United States started to tighten sanctions against Iran’s judicial and other authorities in a bid to continue the riots they had provoked and supported after the sudden death of a young Iranian lady, Mahsa Amini, while in Iran’s police custody.

The Islamic Republic of Iran sees the Western countries’ accusations as part of intensified pressures aimed at pressuring it to give in to the West’s excessive demands in the nuclear talks.

Los Angeles: The US Vice President Kamala Harris is throwing a house party to celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop music, and honour its legacy at her residence in Washington D.C.

Nearly 20 acts are said to be participating in this party, partnering with the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective and Live Nation Urban for the event. Some of the big hip-hop names performing at the event, performers include Common, MC Lyte, Jeezy and Roxanne Shante, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

This commemoration will mark the first time a sitting Vice President has hosted a celebration of this kind. As such, more than 400 guests — including musicians, artists, industry leaders and cultural trail blazers will be attending.

The party was scheduled for September 8, though reportedly was shifted to September 9 due to reasons unknown.

Harris will speak at the event and discuss hip-hop’s profound impact on American culture and how the genre has reached people around the world. She will also highlight and reinforce the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to celebrating the arts.

“The Recording Academy and the Black Music Collective have had a tremendous year paying tribute to and honoring the legacy of Hip-Hop in its milestone 50th year. Taking the celebration to our nation’s capital alongside Vice President Harris is truly something special and I look forward to a historic day,” Harvey Mason jr., president and CEO of the Recording Academy, said in a statement.

The White House paid homage to hip-hop during its Juneteenth event in June, where Method Man spoke at the inaugural concert. “This concert is a fitting way to recognise Juneteenth and express this part of our shared American history,” he said at the time.

“For it is through music that African-Americans found community and sought solace. Music has the power to uplift us, to enrich our minds and nourish our souls.”

He added: “From spirituals to gospel, R&B, jazz, rock, soul, and yes y’all, 50 years of Hip Hop, ya heard?! Each generation of Black musicians, artists and thought leaders have channeled the struggles of their lifetime into the American soundtrack.”

Russia raises key interest rate again as inflation and exchange rate worries continue

Moscow: The Central Bank of Russia raised its key lending rate by one percentage point to 13 per cent on Friday, a month after imposing an even larger hike, as concerns about inflation persist and the ruble continues to struggle against the dollar.

The increase comes as annualised inflation rose in September to 5.5 per cent and the bank said it expected it would reach 6-7 per cent by the end of the year.

“Inflationary pressure in the Russian economy remains high. Significant pro-inflationary risks have crystallised, namely the domestic demand growth outpacing the output expansion capacity and the depreciation of the ruble in the summer months,” the bank’s board said in a statement.”Therefore, it is required to additionally tighten monetary conditions.”

The bank in August increased the lending rate to 12 per cent — a jump of 3.5 percentage points — as the ruble fell to 100 against the dollar. Although the ruble’s exchange rate improved mildly after the rate hike, it remains around 95 to the dollar, significantly weaker than a year ago when it was trading at around 60 to the US currency.

By raising borrowing costs, the central bank is trying to fight price increases as Russia imports more and exports less, especially oil and natural gas, with defence spending going up and sanctions taking a toll. Importing more and exporting less means a smaller trade surplus, which typically weighs on a country’s currency.
