Athens: More than 800 people have been rescued over the past two days from severe floods in Greece, local officials said. This comes after extreme rainfall turned streets into deadly rivers, tore down buildings and bridges and left whole villages submerged, CNN reported.

The rainstorms also hit neighbouring Bulgaria and Turkey, killing at least 14 people across the three countries, including four in Greece.

The Greek region of Thessaly, the country’s agricultural hub, has been hit hardest by what government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis called “the biggest flood phenomenon that our country has ever experienced.

The port city of Volos, the surrounding mountainous Pelion area and the cities of Karditsa and Trikala were among the worst affected areas.

According to Greece’s meteorological service, the downpour has lasted days but is expected to weaken from Thursday afternoon. Rescue operations are now underway to try to reach those left stranded by the floodwaters, which have exceeded two meters (6.5 feet) in some parts of the country.

Videos posted by Greek news outlets and on social media have shown residents in villages near the city of Karditsa forced to swim to safety after their homes were inundated. Other villagers were seen climbing onto their roofs “the only part of their homes not submerged by water “ to call for assistance.

As per CNN, five villages near Karditsa have been cut off entirely by the flooding and at least six people are missing, Greek civil protection minister Vassilis Kikilias told reporters Thursday.

“The villages of Proastio, Agia Triada, as well as the villages of Palamas, Megala Kalyvia and Kalogriana, are blocked, the waters are at a great height and superhuman efforts are being made to approach and free the residents, said Kikilias.

Kikilias said that 885 people have been rescued over the past two days, saying that the pace of the evacuation efforts was hampered by the ferocity of the downpour.

“I want to assure you that there is no means, no action and no effort that could or can be made to evacuate sooner and more safely the people who have been suffering for 48 hours that was not done,” he said, as per CNN.

Kikilias added that rescue teams comprising hundreds of staff are working to evacuate those stranded by the floods, with helicopters deployed to help those the boats cannot reach.

Christian delegation from Pakistan calls on EU Parliamentarians to debate “religious persecution”

Christian delegation from Pakistan calls on EU Parliamentarians to debate “religious persecution”

In recent days, several cases were reported in Pakistan where members of minority Christian communities and their religious places were targeted after blasphemy allegations

Brussels: A delegation of the Christian community in Pakistan met with EU Parliamentarians in Brussels on Thursday to raise the issue of “religious persecution” in the country.

Led by Joseph Jansen, Shagufta Kausar and Asif Mall, the delegation met with MEPs Charlie Weimers, David Lega, Bert-Jan Ruissen and Anja Haga who made a commitment to initiate substantial actions in the European Parliament to address the religion-based violence in Pakistan.

In recent days, several cases were reported in Pakistan where members of minority Christian communities and their religious places were targeted after blasphemy allegations.

On August 16, the mob attacked churches in Jaranwala town of Faisalabad district of Pakistan after accusations of blasphemy against two Christian residents.

Earlier, similar cases were reported in Sargodha where local Christians were targeted on the pretext of fabricated blasphemy accusations. The distressing developments have not only jeopardized the lives of approximately 4,000 to 5,000 Christians but have also evoked deep concerns within the local communities.

Joseph Jansen, advocacy officer at Jubilee Campaign briefed the European Parliament about the situation of religious freedom in Pakistan in the context of the Jaranwala incident. He said that the blasphemy law was misused another time in Jaranwala to target innocent Christians by making them accused of desecration of the Holy Quran which led to mob violence leaving 26 Churches and over 80 homes of Christians torched in the town, which was facilitated by religio-political party Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP).

He raised concerns over the investigations as police officials are not much bothered about the mob attack against Christians, instead, they are more concerned about dealing with the blasphemy, which was not committed by the two Christians accused, rather a false accusation was levelled against Christians to settle personal scores against them.
Joseph demanded a judicial inquiry into the Jaranwala attack, and the safety of Christians accused of blasphemy in Jaranwala and Sargodha, and a fair and transparent investigation and trial to prosecute and punish the people instigating and carrying out mob violence.

Asif Mall, another member of the delegation said that the lives and properties of Christians in Christian settlements across Pakistan are at risk since the Jaranwala violence and blasphemy accusations in Sargodha.

There are reports where people associated with religio-political parties are writing about the Prophet Muhammad on the outer walls of churches, and recently a pastor was shot by a Muslim man in Faisalabad for getting the graffiti removed from the wall with the help of the police, and refusing to convert to Islam.

He added that Police have arrested culprits including representatives of Tehreek-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) involved in violence against Christians in Jaranwala, however, Muslims are pressurizing Christians to withdraw cases against TLP representatives, and they are being threatened with dire consequences, in case, they didn’t comply with their demands.

MEP Charlie Weimers said that the situation caused by reactions after acts of blasphemy affects all citizens of the globe, it is an important issue to be worked on, keeping in view the international human rights standards. It is obligatory for the European Parliament and European External Action Service to raise not only voices against the religious persecution of minorities in Pakistan, but to take meaningful actions that have a significant impact on the ground.

Anja Haga said that the state of religious freedom is abysmal in Pakistan. We as parliamentarians, are committed to joining in all possible actions to press the government of Pakistan to introduce positive reforms to put an end to detrimental consequences of malicious and fictitious blasphemy accusations.

The European Parliamentarians agreed to hold a debate on the destructive effect of blasphemy on Christians in Pakistan and initiate a resolution urging Pakistan to amend blasphemy laws, which are vague and discriminatory in nature, and are inconsistent with freedom of religion and freedom of expression.

Seoul: North Korea has launched a newly built “tactical nuclear attack submarine” capable of carrying out an underwater nuclear attack, with leader Kim Jong-un vowing to “further strengthen the state nuclear deterrence,” the North Korea’s state media said on Friday.

The launching ceremony for the submarine, held on Wednesday, was attended by the North Korean leader ahead of the country’s 75th founding anniversary, which falls on Saturday, according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

“The submarine-launching ceremony heralded the beginning of a new chapter for bolstering up the naval force of the North Korea and made clearer the steadfast will of the WPK and the government of the North Korea to further strengthen the state nuclear deterrence both in quality and quantity and by leaps and bounds for regional and global peace and security,” the KCNA said, referring to the ruling Workers’ Party (WPK).

Named the “Hero Kim Kun Ok”, the tactical nuclear attack submarine No. 841 — the first of its kind — will “perform its combat mission as one of the core underwater offensive means of the naval force” of the North Korea, Yonhap news agency reported.

“The fact that the nuclear attack submarine, considered a symbol of invasion against our republic for decades, now symbolises our power that terrifies the shameless enemies and that it is a new attack submarine of our own style unseen by the world, is truly something welcomed by all our people,” Kim said during his speech, hinting that the latest move was aimed at countering US nuclear-powered submarines.

Calling it an “urgent task of the times” to arm the navy with nuclear weapons, Kim urged the swift transfer of “underwater and surface vessels equipped with tactical nuclear weapons” to the Navy.

He also announced the country’s plans to build more submarines, including a nuclear-powered submarine.

“Today’s launching ceremony will shoulder no less burden for our enemies than building a nuclear-powered submarine,” Kim said.

He then stressed that the rapid development of the naval force is the “top priority” for national defence, given the geopolitical situation, as well as “recent aggressive attempts by the enemies”.

Initial photos released by the KCNA suggest the latest submarine is equipped with 10 missile tubes that can likely fire submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), though the reclusive North Korea has not provided any details.

A military source said the North Korea appears to have modified a Romeo-class submarine, which is not capable of carrying an SLBM launcher.

The submarine is also presumed to be capable of launching the “Haeil,” the North Korea’s first-ever nuclear-armed unmanned underwater vehicle unveiled last March.

The ceremony comes as North Korea has been bolstering its military cooperation with Russia and China in the wake of growing trilateral security cooperation among Seoul, Washington and Tokyo. It also comes amid reports that Kim may travel to Vladivostok, Russia, next week to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and discuss a possible arms deal.

Seoul’s spy agency earlier said Russia had proposed conducting three-way naval exercises with North Korea and China in late July.

US announces new security assistance worth USD 600 million for Ukraine

United States announced a new security assistance package, including 105mm artillery rounds and electronic warfare, worth USD 600 million to support Ukraine’s battlefield needs

US announces new security assistance worth USD 600 million for Ukraine

Washington, DC: The United States announced a new security assistance package, including 105mm artillery rounds and electronic warfare, worth USD 600 million to support Ukraine’s battlefield needs, the Department of Defence (DoD) said in a release.

In the release, the DoD said that this new package will be provided through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) and includes equipment to augment Ukraine’s air defences, artillery munitions, and other capabilities.

This USAI package highlights the continued US commitment to meeting Ukraine’s pressing requirements by committing critical near-term capabilities, while also building the enduring capacity of Ukraine’s Armed Forces to defend its territory and deter Russian aggression over the mid and long-term.

Unlike Presidential Drawdown authority, which DoD has continued to leverage to deliver equipment to Ukraine from DoD stocks at a historic pace, USAI is an authority under which the United States procures capabilities from industry or partners. This announcement represents the beginning of a contracting process to provide additional priority capabilities to Ukraine.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the US has condemned all acts by Moscow and has shown firm support to Ukraine, and its people and also given military assistance to Kyiv.

Earlier on Wednesday, the US announced additional security assistance including artillery munitions and anti-tank weapons, a package worth USD 175 million for Ukraine.

In this new package, the US includes the following equipment: additional air defence equipment; artillery munitions; anti-tank weapons, including depleted uranium rounds for previously committed Abrams tanks; and other equipment to help Ukraine counter Russia’s ongoing war of aggression.

Similar was seen in July, the US sent USD 400 million in additional military aid to Ukraine, including a variety of munitions for advanced air defence systems, artillery rounds and armoured vehicles.

In a statement, Antony Blinken, Secretary of State said, “Pursuant to a delegation of authority from President Biden, I am authorizing our 43rd drawdown for Ukraine. This assistance package includes air defence munitions, artillery rounds, armoured vehicles, and anti-armour capabilities, as well as other equipment essential to strengthening Ukraine’s brave forces on the battlefield, helping them retake Ukraine’s sovereign territory, and defend their fellow citizens.”

South Korean intelligence suggests Kim Jong-un might opt unexpected route to Russia

Seoul: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un may opt for an unexpected route when he travels to Russia for a meeting with President Vladimir Putin, according to South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS).

Earlier this week, The New York Times had reported that Kim plans to travel to Vladivostok, possibly by an armoured train, later this month for talks with Putin about the possibility of supplying Russia with more weaponry for its ongoing war in Ukraine and other military cooperation.

“As it was revealed to the New York Times, there is a possibility of Kim Jong-un making a surprise move by choosing a different route than what is expected,” Yonhap News Agency quoted an NIS official as saying during a parliamentary intelligence committee meeting on Thursday.

During the meeting, NIS Director Kim Kyou-hyun said the agency is closely monitoring the planned visit and sharing intelligence with other national spy agencies as a summit between the North and Russia would have a big effect on the international situation.

The New York Times report said a delegation of some 20 North Korean officials traveled to Vladivostok in late August.

“One potential stop for Mr. Kim after Vladivostok, an official said, is Vostochny Cosmodrome, a space launch centre,” said the report, noting North Korea may be seeking to secure advanced technology for satellites and nuclear-powered submarines from Russia in exchange of its weapons.

Confident that India will do ‘everything possible’ to ensure existing geopolitical divides are overcome: UN chief

Antonio Guterres has expressed confidence that India, all set to host the leaders’ summit during its G20 presidency, will do “everything possible” to ensure that existing geopolitical divides are overcome

Confident that India will do ‘everything possible’ to ensure existing geopolitical divides are overcome: UN chief

United Nations/Jakarta: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed confidence that India, all set to host the leaders’ summit during its G20 presidency, will do “everything possible” to ensure that existing geopolitical divides are overcome and the crucial gathering of world leaders concludes with “possible results.” Guterres will arrive in Delhi on Friday to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit on September 9 and 10 for which world leaders, including US President Joe Biden, are travelling to India.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are not attending the summit.

“I’m confident that India will do everything possible to make sure that the geopolitical divides that exist are overcome and that the G20 can conclude with possible results,” Guterres said in Jakarta where he is participating in the 13th ASEAN-UN Summit.

He was responding to a question on his expectations from India as the G20 host as well as New Delhi’s support for bringing the African Union (AU) into the grouping of the world’s biggest economies.

India assumed the year-long G20 Presidency in December last year and the Leaders’ Summit in Delhi comes amid several geopolitical challenges, including the Ukraine war, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, economic slowdown, a worsening climate emergency, growing poverty, and inequalities.
Guterres added that as he attends the G20 Summit, there are questions that for him would be essential.

“One is to have a clear message about the reform of the international financial architecture to make it adapted to the needs of today’s world,” he said.

The UN chief further said that another key aspect is to create conditions in debt relief and in access to long-term concessional funding to allow developing countries to be able to overcome the impacts of COVID-19, the war in Ukraine, and many other situations that are putting many nations on the verge of debt distress.

Guterres noted that many countries are faced with situations in which they do not have the fiscal space to attend to the needs of their own people.

“And at the same time, I would be obviously very interested in seeing the emerging economies and the developed countries that are gathering in the G20 to be able to come to a united approach to an increased ambition, ambition in mitigation to reduce emissions, as we are facing a catastrophic climate situation, and ambition in justice to provide developing countries with the resources they need for climate action in adaptation and in mitigation.” Guterres further noted that the UN has a very solid partnership with the African Union. He said Africa has a “serious problem” of representation in today’s international institutions.

“When they were created, the African continent had few independent countries, most of the countries were still under colonial regimes. And so, Africa was a double victim of colonialism and then of the fact that when the UN was created, the Bretton Woods system was created, the African countries were not there,” the UN chief said.

“So that is why I’m strongly supportive of the presence of an African country, at least as a permanent member of the Security Council, that I can see that it’s essential to reform the Bretton Woods system for Africa to have a stronger participation and, of course, I would be very happy to see the African Union as a member of the G20,” he said.

The G20 includes the world’s 19 wealthiest countries and the European Union.

Trump’s ex-trade adviser convicted of contempt of Congress

Trump’s ex-trade adviser convicted of contempt of Congress

Washington: Peter Navarro, a trade adviser to former US President Donald Trump, has been convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with the House select committee probing the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

Navarro is the second former aide to Trump to be prosecuted for his lack of cooperation with the committee, reports CNN.

The case of former strategist Steve Bannon, who was convicted last year on two contempt counts, is currently on appeal.

Navarro, who up to a year in prison for each of the two contempt counts, has pledged to appeal based on executive privilege issues.

Describing the vedict as as a “sad day for America”, he said: “For the first time in the history of our republic, that a senior White House adviser, an alter ego of the president, has ever been charged with this alleged crime.”

“We knew going in what the verdict was going to be. That is why this is going to the appeals court,” CNN quoted the former aide as saying to reporters outside the courthouse in Washington D.C. on Thursday.

“And we feel – look, I said from the beginning this is going to the Supreme Court. I said from the beginning I’m willing to go to prison to settle this issue, I’m willing to do that.”

Asked by CNN if he had spoken to his former boss or reached out for help on legal bills, Navarro said: “President Trump has been a rock in terms of assistance. We talk when we need to talk. He will win the presidential race in 2024, in November. You know why? Because the people are tired of Joe Biden weaponising courts like this and the Department of Justice.”

US District Judge Amit Mehta has scheduled Navarro’s sentencing for January 12, 2024.

Navarro was served with a subpoena by a US House of Representatives select committee in February 2022, reports the BBC.

But he did not hand over any of the requested emails or documents or appear to testify before the Democratic-led panel.

The committee wanted to question Navarro about efforts to delay certification of the 2020 election, according to a former staff director for the panel who testified in court.

In addition to a maximum sentence of a year in prison for each count, he also faces fines of up to $100,000.

Washington DC: US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that their view is very much that having Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the G20 Summit hosted under India’s Presidency would be a good thing.

Speaking in a press gaggle aboard Air Force One, Sullivan noted that Zelenskyy has been relentless in his capacity to engage all of the leaders who are seated at the table.

Responding to the question regarding Zelenskyy not being invited to the G20 Summit, Sullivan said, “Look from our perspective anytime President Zelenskyy gets the opportunity to address a body, a group is a good thing. We believe that about the G20, he addressed it last year but President Zelenskyy has been relentless in his capacity to engage all of the leaders who are seated at the table and we also saw in Jeddah not long ago many of the key countries of the G20 including from the Global South sit with Ukrainians in the same room to talk through the principles of adjust and durable peace including sovereignty and territorial Integrity.

“So, I feel good about where we are. Although the US view is very much that having Zelenskyy have a role in this G20 would be a good thing,” he added.

Earlier in March, Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra said that the Ministry of External Affairs at the time of the launch of the G20 Presidency had shared details regarding the nations that will be invited as guests.

Asked on whether Ukraine will participate in the G20 Ministers Meeting in March, Kwatra said, “As far as Ukraine’s invitation is concerned, see, during the presser that we did at the time of launch of the G20 presidency, it was made clear as to which nations are invited as guests, including obviously, the G20 members. The list of those countries was shared with you. We have not made any changes or addition in that list.” India is hosting the G20 Leaders Summit at the newly inaugurated Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi on September 9-10.
