Kerala High Court Bans Arms Training By RSS Inside Sarkara Devi Temple

Kochi:

The Kerala High Court said that no mass drill or weapons training will be allowed on the premises of the Sarkara Devi Temple in Thiruvananthapuram District. The temple is under the management of the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB).

The court’s direction came when it was disposing of a petition by two devotees seeking an order to prevent the “illegal use and unauthorised occupancy” of the temple premises by the RSS and its members.

The High Court directed the police to provide necessary assistance for the strict compliance of an earlier TDB order banning RSS ‘shakhas’ (branches) and mass drills at the shrines managed by the board.

“No mass drill or weaponry practices (sic) shall be permitted on the premises of the said temple, which is under the management of the Travancore Devaswom Board. The Station House Officer of Chirayinkeezhu Police Station shall render necessary assistance to the Administrative Officer to ensure strict compliance of the prohibition…,” Justices Anil K Narendran and PG Ajithkumar said in a recent order.

The TDB, which manages the temples in Kerala, had on May 18, issued a fresh circular asking officials to strictly follow its earlier order banning RSS ‘shakhas’ (branches) or mass drills in the shrines under it.

In that circular, the TDB said that stern action would be taken against officials who refuse to follow its 2021 order in the same regard.

The TDB had in 2016 issued a circular banning all types of arms training in the temple complexes by the RSS. Later, on March 30, 2021, the board reissued the circular asking officials to take action.

In 2016, the then Devaswom Minister, Kadakampally Surendran, had claimed that the RSS was trying to turn temples into storehouses of arms in Kerala and that the government had been receiving a large number of complaints in this regard.

Iran sees no obstacle in way of renewing JCPOA revival talks: Top negotiator

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Ali Bagheri Kani says there is no obstacle to the resumption and finalization of the talks aimed at reviving the 2015 nuclear agreement if the sides adopt a realistic approach and avoid previous mistakes.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran sees no obstacle to resuming negotiations and finalizing an agreement if the other parties act realistically and prevent repeating the past mistakes,” Bagheri Kani, who is also Iran’s chief negotiator, said on Monday.

He reaffirmed the Iranian administration’s seriousness to pursue the talks to revive the nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and remove the sanctions re-imposed on the country following the unilateral US withdrawal from the agreement three years after its conclusion.

“The [Iranian] administration has never blocked the path to diplomacy, negotiations and efforts to secure the national interests through achievement of a balanced agreement,” the senior diplomat said.

Iran proved the peaceful nature of its nuclear program to the world by signing the JCPOA with six world powers. However, Washington’s exit in May 2018 and its subsequent re-imposition of sanctions against Tehran left the future of the deal in limbo.

Multilateral diplomatic efforts to revive the JCPOA have been stalled since August 2022, with Iran blaming the United States for failing to guarantee that it will not leave the deal again.

Iran has repeatedly said that the JCPOA revival is possible if the US and the European signatories to the agreement — Britain, France and Germany — have the will to reach that aim, warning that the opportunity will not last forever.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Bagheri Kani stressed the need for constant vigilance and prudence in foreign policy, maintaining that sustainable security and development hinge on remaining committed to ideals and values.

The senior diplomat emphasized that Iran’s ‘Look East’ policy of strengthening ties with neighboring countries and Eastern powers is not tantamount to overlooking the capacities elsewhere in the world.

Europe has never been and would never be on the “black list” of Iran’s foreign relations and Tehran welcomes European countries’ role in its development plans, he said.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi has always emphasized that the country’s development, progress and prosperity as well as people’s welfare should not be tied to the will and decision of a few Western countries, he added.

Updated Asia Cup Super 4 Points Table After India's Big Win Over Pakistan

Kuldeep Yadav registered a five-wicket haul while Virat Kohli and KL Rahul smashed unbeaten centuries as India outplayed Pakistan by 228 runs in the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match in Colombo on Monday. The game that started on Sunday but was moved to the reserve day due to rain eventually saw India finishing on a high with the bat as well as the ball. Resuming at the score of 147 for 2 in 24.1 overs on Monday with Kohli and Rahul at the crease, India posted a daunting total of 356 for 2 in 50 overs against Pakistan.

Kohli scored 122 not out while Rahul hit unbeaten 111 to steer India to the big total. Only if India’s dominance in the game lacked anything, Kuldeep returned with figures of 5 for 25.

After the big victory, India rose to the top spot in the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 table. They have two points to their credit but a superb net run rate (NRR) of +4.560 has put them at helm.

On the other hand, Pakistan slipped to the number three spot with an NRR of -1.892.

Sri Lanka are at the second spot with an NRR of +0.420 while Bangladesh are at the bottom place in the four-team table with an NRR of -0.749.

Here is the updated table:

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Talking about the game, Kohli’s supreme fitness was evident in his 47th ODI century while comeback man Rahul produced an equally engaging ton on comeback as India thrashed a listless Pakistan by record 228-run margin in the rain-marred contest.

This is India’s biggest win in terms of runs against the cross-border neighbours.

India posted an imposing 356 for 2, as Kohli (122 not out off 94 balls) and Rahul (111 not out off 106 balls), which was his sixth ODI hundred, pummelled a hapless Pakistan, whose chase ended at 128 for 8 as Kuldeep Yadav (5/25) scythed through them.

SpiceJet To Pay $1.5 Million To Credit Suisse After Supreme Court Order

SpiceJet To Pay $1.5 Million To Credit Suisse After Supreme Court Order

Credit Suisse and SpiceJet have been engaged in a legal dispute since 2015 (Representational)

New Delhi:

SpiceJet said on Monday it would pay $1.5 million to Credit Suisse as demanded by the Supreme Court.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court ordered SpiceJet to make the payment by September 15 in a case related to unpaid dues and warned the budget airline of unspecified “drastic action” at the next hearing if it failed to do so.

A third of the amount is part of a monthly settlement plan SpiceJet had previously agreed with Credit Suisse, and the rest are unpaid dues to the bank that have accrued since last year after the airline failed to keep up with the payment schedule.

If SpiceJet fails to pay, the Supreme Court will take “drastic action” at the next hearing on September 22, it said.

“Enough of this dilly-dally business … We are not bothered even if you die,” one of the two judges said during the hearing, which was attended by SpiceJet chief Ajay Singh.

The airline had previously said the Credit Suisse debt was an old one that predated the tenure of its current management.

Credit Suisse and SpiceJet have been engaged in a legal dispute since 2015 over the bank’s claim of unpaid dues of around $24 million, which led to the Madras High Court’s order that the airline be wound up in 2021.

Even after agreeing to a settlement plan, the dues were not paid, and in March Credit Suisse approached the Supreme Court seeking to initiate contempt proceedings against SpiceJet and Singh over “a wilful and intentional disobedience” of court orders and failure to pay dues of $4.5 million.

The court order is the latest setback for cash-strapped SpiceJet which told a court last month it was “struggling to stay afloat” after it was ordered to pay Rs 100 crores to its former owner, Kalanithi Maran, by September 10 as part of an arbitration order in a separate case.

In that case, also heard on Monday at a Delhi High Court, SpiceJet said it had deposited 625 million rupees of that amount.

The airline said late on Monday it would complete the payment of 1 billion rupees to Mr Maran by Tuesday.

Putin Invites N Korea's Kim Jong Un To Russia: What To Watch Out For

Putin Invites North Korea's Kim Jong Un To Russia: What To Watch Out For

Kim Jong Un is likely to hold bilateral talks with Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (File)

Moscow, Russia:

What should the world be looking for when North Korean leader Kim Jong Un meets Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin in Russia in the coming days?

The Kremlin said on Monday that Putin had invited Kim Jong to Russia for what will be the North Korean’s second known visit to Russia and his first trip abroad since the COVID pandemic.

Who is Kim Jong Un with?

If he travels with a full military delegation that could give an indication of the nature of the talks. Also of interest is who he meets besides Putin, such as Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu who visited North Korea in July.

The United States has expressed concern over what it calls advancing arms negotiations between the two countries, with White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan urging Kim “not to supply weapons to Russia that will end up killing Ukrainians”.

The United States has accused North Korea of providing arms to Russia, but it is unclear whether any deliveries have been made. Both Russia and North Korea have denied those claims but promised to deepen defence cooperation.

What does Vladimir Putin say?

Analysts say North Korea has huge supplies of artillery shells, rockets and small arms ammunition that could help Russia replenish the vast stocks it has expended in more than 18 months of war in Ukraine, though their quality and the country’s ability to mass produce more is unclear.

Workers may also be something Russia is interested in amid record-low unemployment. Before United Nations Security Council resolutions banned them in 2019, Russia was estimated to host nearly 20,000 North Koreans, according to a report by the Association of Asian Studies.

In return, Russia could offer grain, oil and military technology as Kim looks to develop capabilities such as nuclear-powered submarines and military reconnaissance satellites.

North Korea’s latest Hwasong-18 intercontinental ballistic missile – its first ICBM to use solid rocket fuel – has reignited debate over possible Russian links to the nuclear-armed state’s dramatic missile development.

Anything Kim Jong Un says on nuclear weapons

For the past several years, the UN Security Council has been divided over how to deal with North Korea. Russia and China have said more sanctions will not help and want such measures to be eased.

Whatever else comes from the meeting, the summit itself is a sign of support for each country as they face off against international sanctions and pressure.

Putin said after holding his first face-to-face talks with Kim in 2019 that proposed US security guarantees would probably not be enough to persuade Pyongyang to shut its nuclear programme.

Back in 2019, Putin described Kim Jong as “quite open” and as “thoughtful” and “interesting”.

What do Beijing and Washington say?

Communist North Korea was formed in the early days of the Cold War with the backing of the Soviet Union. North Korea later battled the South and its US and United Nations allies to a stalemate in the 1950-1953 Korean War with extensive aid from China and the Soviet Union.

North Korea was heavily reliant on Soviet aid for decades, and the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s contributed to a deadly famine in the North.

Pyongyang’s leaders have often tried to use Beijing and Moscow to balance each other. Kim Jong initially had a relatively cool relationship with Russia and China, which both joined the United States in imposing strict sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear tests.

Anything quirky

Both Putin and Kim Jong know how to catch global headlines.

Back in 2019, the two leaders attended a gala dinner where they toasted each other and watched traditional musical numbers and dancing performed by Russian artists.

The numbers included the Russian classic song “Black Eyes” and a Korean song called “The Great Commander”.

The two men also exchanged gifts. Kim Jong gave Putin a traditional Korean sword, while the Russian leader gave Kim Jong a sabre and a tea service suitable for use on his armoured train.

Kim Jong’s rare foreign trips have occasionally offered more candid moments than what leaks from the tightly controlled state media in the North.

During his 2019 summit with US President Donald Trump in the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, Kim spoke to foreign journalists for the first time, during a photo opportunity.

That summit, for which he spent days travelling by train through China, also revealed more interactions between Kim and his sister, Kim Yo Jong. TV footage captured the North Korean leader taking a cigarette break at a railway station in the southern Chinese city of Nanning, with Yo Jong approaching him holding a crystal ashtray in two hands.

At a 2018 Inter-Korean Summit, 12 male bodyguards in dark suits made international headlines after they surrounded Kim’s Mercedes-Benz vehicle and jogged alongside.

"Warm, Productive": Rishi Sunak On Free Trade Agreement Talks with PM Modi

'Warm, Productive': Rishi Sunak On Free Trade Agreement Talks with PM Modi

India and the UK have concluded 12 negotiating rounds towards an FTA.

London:

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday told lawmakers that he had “warm and productive” discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards a free trade agreement (FTA) with India as he updated the UK Parliament on his recent visit to New Delhi for the India-led G20 Summit.

Addressing the House of Commons after his first visit to India as British Prime Minister, the 43-year-old leader began by flagging his and his wife Akshata Murty’s Indian connections and financial interests in India.

In his detailed parliamentary statement, Mr Sunak went on to highlight his three key aims of the India visit, which included increasing diplomatic pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin over the conflict in Ukraine, climate action and strengthening ties with India.

“I held warm and productive discussions with Prime Minister Modi on strengthening our relationship in defence, technology and a free trade deal between our nations,” Mr Sunak said.

India and the UK have concluded 12 negotiating rounds towards an FTA, which both sides believe will significantly enhance the GBP 36 billion bilateral trade partnership. While in India, Mr Sunak told reporters that things aren’t quite agreed on the pact and that he “won’t rush things”.

“For the record, let me declare that as is a matter of public record, I and my family are of Indian origin. My wife and her family are Indian citizens with financial interests in India,” Mr Sunak told the Commons with reference to Murty’s shares in Infosys – the software major co-founded by her father Narayana Murthy.

Mr Sunak pointed out that even as most G20 leaders came together in Delhi in a spirit of cooperation, one leader was missing from the summit.

“Putin has lacked the courage to face his G20 peers day after day. His actions cause horrendous suffering in Ukraine, violating the UN Charter, threatening European security and disrupting global energy supplies… Leaders united in calling out the human suffering caused by Putin’s war,” he said.

On his other key priority at the summit, he stressed that the UK is seen as a global leader on climate issues.

“At the G20, I made a record commitment of over 1.6 billion pounds for the Green Climate Fund, the single biggest international climate pledge the UK has ever made,” he said.

Against the backdrop of UK media revelations over the weekend of the arrest of a parliamentary researcher on suspicion of spying for China, Sunak told MPs that he met Premier Li Qiang on the margins of the summit in New Delhi to condemn such actions.

“I was emphatic with Premier Li that actions which seek to undermine British democracy are completely unacceptable and will never be tolerated. I also emphasised the UK’s unyielding commitment to human rights, and I was clear on the importance of maintaining stability and international law as the basis for stable relations,” he said.

During questions raised by members of Parliament, Sunak was asked about the case of British Sikh activist Jagtar Johal who is lodged in an Indian jail on serious charges. The British prime minister confirmed that he had raised the matter during his talks with the Indian counterpart and that the UK “remains committed to seeing a resolution” to the case.

Case Against Ashneer Grover Over His Cleanliness Remark On Indore

Case Against Ashneer Grover Over His Cleanliness Remark On Indore

Ashneer Grover commented on Indore’s top rank in the Centre’s cleanliness survey. (FILE)

Indore:

A non cognisable offence information report (NCR) was registered on Monday against BharatPe co-founder Ashneer Grover after a video showed him commenting on Indore’s top rank in the Centre’s cleanliness survey and purportedly claiming it had been “bought”.

Indore city of Madhya Pradesh has remained on top in the Centre’s Swachh Sarvekshan for six consecutive years.

Addressing an event in Indore on Sunday, Mr Grover is heard in the video saying, “See, there is a concept – playing to the gallery, that is, wherever you go, praise it saying I have never seen such a nice city. Now the problem with me is that for three-four years I have heard that Indore is the cleanest city…you have bought the survey. It’s a simple thing.” Mr Grover, however, immediately clarified he was not saying there was filth in Indore, and that he meant several construction works are going on in the city.

An NCR was registered against Mr Grover under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 499 (defamation) and section 500 (punishment for defamation) on the complaint received from the Indore Municipal Corporation, Lasudia police station in charge Taresh Kumar Soni told reporters.

“After an NCR is registered, if the complainant wishes, he can file a case in court at his personal level,” Mr Soni explained.

Indore’s Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava said, “I have seen Grover’s video. His statement is an insult to the hard work of the city’s people and sanitation workers for cleanliness. We will take appropriate legal action against this insult and also serve him a notice for defamation.” Indore Municipal Corporation chief sanitary inspector Sanjay Ghavri, on whose complaint the NCR was lodged, told PTI that Grover’s controversial statement had insulted the people of the city.

“This statement has hurt thousands of sanitation workers of the city who are engaged in cleanliness work from early morning till late night,” Mr Ghavri said.

America pays tribute to 9/11 victims on 22nd anniversary of terror attacks

New York: American citizens and leaders across the US Monday paid tributes and honoured the memories of the nearly 3,000 people who died in the horrific September 11 terrorist attacks as the US commemorates 22 years of the tragedy.

The victims of the 9/11 terror attacks were honoured during a solemn ceremony at the site of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in Lower Manhattan, where the twin towers of the World Trade Centre once stood and which were razed to the ground when two airlines hijacked by Al-Qaeda terrorists crashed into the towers, forever altering the Manhattan skyline on September 11, 2001.

Bells chimed and a moment of silence was observed at the exact time when tragedy struck across the US 22 years ago – at 8:46 am, the exact moment when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower, the first of the four attacks that occurred that morning. At 9:03 am United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower, at 9:37 am American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon near Washington DC, at 9:59 am the South Tower collapsed, 10:03 am United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania and at 10:28 am the North Tower fell.

“Today, we remember the 2,977 precious lives stolen from us on 9/11 and reflect on all that was lost in the fire and ash that September morning. The American story itself changed on this day 22 years ago. But what could not — and will not — change is the character of this nation,” President Joe Biden said in a post on platform X.
