"Absolutely Believe It Was A Success": US Lauds India For G20 Summit

'Absolutely Believe It Was A Success': US Lauds India For G20 Summit

PM Modi hosted dinner for US President Joe Biden and discussed India-US ties during G20 Summit.

Washington:

As the G20 Leaders’ Summit concluded with great fervour in Delhi under India’s presidency on Sunday, the United States also called it an ‘absolute success.’

In a regular press briefing on Monday, the US State Department official spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters, “We absolutely believe it was a success. The G20 is a big organisation. Russia is a member of the G20. China is a member of the G20.

The spokesperson responded to a media query on whether the G20 Summit was successful.

When asked about Russia’s absence from the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, he said, “There are members that have a diverse range of views. We believe the fact that the organisation was able to issue a statement that calls for respecting territorial integrity and sovereignty and saying that those principles should not be violated is an extremely important statement because that is exactly what is at the heart of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”

“It is those very questions so we thought that was an incredibly important statement for them to make,” Miller added.

The “use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible”, G20 nations said Saturday in a New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration under the mention of the Ukraine war.

Without mentioning Russia, the G20 member countries recalled the Bali declaration and underscored that all States must act in a manner consistent with the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter in its entirety and called for a “comprehensive, just, and durable peace in Ukraine” and reminded member states to “refrain from the threat, or use of force, to seek territorial acquisition”.

“Concerning the war in Ukraine, while recalling the discussion in Bali, we reiterated our national positions and resolutions adopted at the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly and underscored that all States must act in a manner consistent with the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter in its entirety. In line with the UN Charter, all states must refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition against the territorial integrity and sovereignty or political independence of any state. The use or threat of use of nuclear weapons are inadmissible,” the joint declaration read.

The New Delhi Declaration reaffirmed that the G20 is the premier forum for international economic cooperation and the member countries acknowledged that the G20 is not the platform for Geopolitical and security issues; although these issues can have consequences for the global economy.

The G20 members called on all states to uphold the principles of international law including territorial integrity and sovereignty, international humanitarian law, and the multilateral system that safeguards peace and stability.

“The peaceful resolution of conflicts, and efforts to address crises as well as diplomacy and dialogue are critical. We will unite in our endeavour to address the adverse impact of the war on the global economy and welcome all relevant and constructive initiatives that support a comprehensive, just, and durable peace in Ukraine that will uphold all the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter for the promotion of peaceful, friendly, and good neighbourly relations among nations in the spirit of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’,” the New Delhi Declaration read.

This was the first time that the G20 Summit was hosted by India. The G20 Summit took place in New Delhi on September 9-10.
Extensive preparations were made to portray India’s traditions and strengths. During the presidency, India has focused on various issues like inclusive growth, digital innovation, climate resilience, and equitable global health access.

While Indonesia held the G20 presidency last year, Brazil will hold the presidency after India.

Ailing US Explorer Rescued After Nine Days In Turkish Cave

Ailing US Explorer Rescued After Nine Days In Turkish Cave

US explorer Mark Dickey, who fell ill at a depth of 1,120 metres in Turkish cave, finally rescued.

Istanbul:

An international team of rescuers on Tuesday pulled to safety a US explorer who spent nine days trapped deep in the narrow tunnels of a Turkish cave with internal bleeding.

“Mark Dickey was removed from the last exit of the cave,” the Turkish Caving Federation said, adding that the “cave rescue part of the operation has ended successfully.”

The 40-year-old explorer developed stomach problems while examining the depths of the Morca Cave, a remote complex of twisting underground passageways in southern Turkey’s Taurus Mountains.

The cave, Turkey’s third-deepest, reaches nearly 1.3 kilometres (0.8 miles) below ground at its lowest point.

Dickey fell ill at a depth of 1,120 metres (3,695 feet), sparking what organisers said was one of the largest and most complicated underground rescue operations ever mounted.

An international team of 200 rescuers, fellow explorers and medics began to cautiously pull Dickey to safety after first giving him infusions of blood.

They first strapped him to a stretcher, which sometimes needed to be lifted vertically by rope through particularly narrow passageways.

The teams pulling the ropes would occasionally take breaks, climbing back up to the surface before returning underground.

“We congratulate all those who contributed,” the Turkish Caving Federation said.

– ‘Saved my life’ –

Officials said Dickey’s health has been steadily improving for a few days.

“He is in good health in general. He continues to be fed with liquids,” Cenk Yildiz, the head of the local branch of Turkey’s emergency response service, told reporters late on Sunday.

“We have resolved his stomach bleeding issues with plasma and serum support.”

In a video recorded on Wednesday, Dickey thanked the Turkish government for its help.

“The quick response of the Turkish government to get the medical supplies that I needed, in my opinion saved my life,” Dickey said.

The European Cave Rescue Association (ECRA) called Dickey an experienced explorer with a medical background.

The New York state native is a “well-known figure in the international speleological community, a highly trained caver, and a cave rescuer himself,” the ECRA said.

“In addition to his activities as a speleologist, he is also the secretary of the ECRA medical committee and an instructor for cave rescue organisations in the USA.”

Asia Cup: Why Pakistan Were 'All Out' Despite Losing 8 Wickets vs India

Asia Cup 2023: Why Pakistan Were All Out Despite Losing 8 Wickets Against India

India beat Pakistan by 228 runs in Asia Cup 2023© X (formerly Twitter)

Pakistan were completely outplayed by the Indian cricket team as the Babar Azam-led side succumbed to a 228-run defeat in the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match on Monday. The batters never looked quite comfortable against the Indian pace attack but it was Kuldeep Yadav who was the pick of the bowlers with a brilliant five-wicket haul. The game ended when Pakistan lost eight wickets as both Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah were not cleared to bat after suffering niggles during the game. While Rauf did not take the pitch at all on Monday, Naseem bowled 9.2 overs for his side but left the field due to injury.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam was not pleased with the performance of his side’s batters and in the aftermath of the match, he praised Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.

“Weather not in our hands – but both bowling and batting. (How Rohit and Shubman attacked Pakistan’s main bowlers) They had a plan for our bowlers. And then KL and Virat followed up and finished very well. (Pakistan fans, disappointed, maybe in the run chase. Never in the hunt.) Jasprit and Siraj bowled very well in first ten overs swinging both ways. Yes we lost back to back wickets, couldn’t build partnerships.”

Virat Kohli (122) and K L Rahul (111) struck unbeaten centuries to steer India to a commanding 356 for two, the team’s joint highest total against Pakistan in ODIs.

Part time spinner Iftikhar Ahmed leaked 52 runs in 5.4 overs and was the second most expensive bowler for Pakistan after Shaheen Shah Afridi (1/79 in 10 overs).

In response, Pakistan were all out for 128 in 32 overs. Kuldeep Yadav was the stand out bowler for India as he ended with a five wicket haul.

Kerala police officer suspended after woman’s complaint accusing him of physical assault

Kozhikode: A sub inspector, accused of physically assaulting a woman following her dispute with some persons over not giving way to their vehicle in Kozhikode district of Kerala, was on Monday suspended by Kerala police.

A senior police officer of Kozhikode district confirmed that the SI was suspended pending a departmental probe into the allegations against him.

The senior officer also said that the SI was off duty when the incident occurred on Saturday night.

According to an officer of Kakkur police station, where the woman lodged a complaint against the SI, two groups of persons travelling in two separate vehicles got into an argument over one car not giving way to the other.

“One group called a relative who is in the police. There was some scuffle between the two groups. Some members of both sides were admitted in hospital for treatment and cross complaints have been filed by them,” the officer had said on Sunday.

The woman had told news channels that the people in the other car had called a relative who reached the spot and identified himself as a police officer.

She alleged that the police officer and his relatives beat up her husband, and when she intervened to make them stop, the SI kicked her below the stomach.

“One of his relatives also bit me on the arm,” she had claimed.

The officer of Kakkur police station had said that cases were lodged based on complaints by both sides.

UK’s major retailer to shut all stores amid high inflation, killing thousands of jobs

British major retailer, Wilko, says it is forced to shut all its stores across the country by early October, amid rising inflation and an unprecedented cost-of-living crisis that is plaguing the UK.

According to the announcement, which was made on Monday, the decision will see more than 10,000 staff get laid off after last-ditch talks on a rescue deal with the owner of the HMV music store chain collapsed.

“…despite extensive efforts, it has become clear that no significant part of the Wilko operations can be rescued,” said PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), a British multinational audit and assurance firm, which has taken over as the family-owned budget retailer’s administrator.

PwC confirmed that 124 Wilko stores will be closed by September 21, while the timing for the closure of the remaining 222 stores has yet to be announced. The company’s distribution center operations are expected to be shut down on Friday.

Wilko, which started as a hardware store in 1930, announced its collapse on August 10, putting 12,500 jobs at risk.

It blamed Britain’s “stubbornly high inflation” and interest rates affecting businesses and consumers as the main reasons behind the decision.

Market analysts also confirmed that the company has succumbed to Britain’s tougher economic environment and cost-of-living crisis that has been driven by high inflation and a series of interest rate rises.

Earlier this month, London-listed retailer B&M struck a deal to buy 51 Wilko stores for up to 13 million pounds ($16.26 million). However, a deal could not be reached in time for the rest of the company, despite efforts by Canadian businessman, Doug Putman, the owner of HMV music stores, and PwC.

The PwC put the failure down to the impossibility of cutting down infrastructure costs quickly enough to make a transaction viable.

The rest of the bidders have said they were disinterested in running their stores under the Wilko name.

“This isn’t a tragedy without cause,” said Nadine Houghton, national officer at the GMB trade union, which says it represents about 4,000 workers at Wilko.

“Wilko should have thrived in a bargain retail sector that is otherwise strong, but it was run into the ground by the business owners,” she added.

Leader of the Britain’s opposition Labour Party, Keir Starmer, also commented on Wilko’s collapse on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Devastating for staff and their families and another symptom of Tory Britain,” he said, referring to the Conservative Party, which has held power in Britain for the last 13 years.

Drinks are on the field as the players take a breather. Pakistan have had a very poor start and half of their team has been sent back to the pavilion and they are a long way behind in the chase. None of the batters looked well settled on the pitch and could not build a strong partnership. India on the other hand has used the conditions to their strengths and managed to put their opposition on the back foot. Their bowlers are doing a fantastic job and taking timely wickets which is working to their advantage. Pakistan need a strong partnership now as Shadab Khan walks out to bat next.

23.6 overs (0 Run) OUT! LBW! Looks dead straight and it is given! Agha Salman has reviewed it though. A bit quicker and flatter from Kuldeep Yadav, pushed through full around middle. It is the regular leg-break and the ball turns in. Salman goes for the fine sweep but misses and gets hit on the pads. UltraEdge shows a flat line as the ball passes the bat. Ball Tracking comes up with the wickets as umpire’s call and Salman has to walk back. Kuldeep gets his second and Pakistan have now lost half their side. PAK vs IND: Super Four - Match 3: WICKET! 23.2 overs (0 Run) Nicely floated up on the legs, Agha Salman nudges it gently to mid-wicket.

22.6 overs (2 Runs) On the stumps, Agha Salman gets inside the line and paddles it ’round the corner for a couple of runs.

22.5 overs (0 Run) Quicker delivery around off, Agha Salman keeps it out to extra cover.

22.3 overs (1 Run) Full and outside off, stroked away through the cover region for a single.

22.2 overs (4 Runs) FOUR! Much-needed boundary! Tossed up around off, Agha Salman reaches out in front of him and slogs it high toward cow corner. The ball trickles into the fence. PAK vs IND: Super Four - Match 3: Agha Salman hits Ravindra Jadeja for a 4! PAK 89/4 (22.2 Ov). Target: 357; RRR: 9.69

22.1 overs (1 Run) Sloppy fielding from Shubman Gill. Short and wide, turning away, Iftikhar Ahmed taps it in front of point where Gill fumbles and allows the single.

21.6 overs (0 Run) A lovely delivery to end the over, just a single off it. Flights it up on a nagging length around off and it is the googly that goes across the right-hander. Agha Salman leans on to defend but is well beaten.

21.5 overs (0 Run) Nicely flighted, on middle, Agha Salman leans on and pushes it back to the bowler.

21.4 overs (1 Run) Tossed up full on middle, Iftikhar Ahmed pushes it to mid off for a quick single.

21.3 overs (0 Run) Shorter one on off stump, Iftikhar Ahmed rocks back and looks to pull it away hard but miscues it completely off the toe end.

21.2 overs (0 Run) Slightly shorter around off, Iftikhar Ahmed tentatively defends it off the back foot.

21.1 overs (0 Run) Nagging length, floated up on off and turning in, Iftikhar Ahmed goes on the back foot to play it on the on side.

Oh, no! Play will be halted for a while as Agha Salman has been injured. The ball hit his face after deflecting from the upper edge of his bat and there is a bruise under his right eye. The medics and physio are on the field and tending to him. Hope he is okay. There will be a mandatory concussion test conducted and he has his helmet on. Looks like he will continue as the medics and physios are giving him some instructions. It is confirmed that he will continue and play resumes. A lot of injury scares for Pakistan in this match.

20.6 overs (0 Run) Ouch, that must have hurt! Agha Salman has injured himself badly here. Full and quick from Jadeja outside off, Salman gets across and gets inside the line, trying to paddle it fine but gets a top edge right into the face and as he is not wearing a helmet, the ball crashes into the nose.

Kim Jong Un Leaves North Korea On Train For Russia To Meet Putin

Kim Jong Un Leaves North Korea On Train For Russia To Meet Putin

North Korea has confirmed that its supreme leader Kim Jong Un left for Russia by Train on Sunday.

Seoul:

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was travelling to Russia by armoured train early Tuesday to meet President Vladimir Putin, Pyongyang reported, with face-to-face talks potentially focused on weapon sales.

Experts suggest Putin is seeking artillery shells and antitank missiles from North Korea for Moscow’s war in Ukraine, while Kim is reportedly in search of advanced technology for satellites and nuclear-powered submarines, as well as food aid for his impoverished nation.

Kim “left here by his train on Sunday afternoon to visit the Russian Federation” and was accompanied by senior figures in the Communist Party, the government and military agencies, the official Korean Central News Agency reported.

KCNA did not report on the location of Kim’s train Tuesday, including whether it had crossed the Russian border.

On Monday the agency had reported that “the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un will meet and have a talk with Comrade Putin during the visit.”

The Kremlin also confirmed that Kim would visit Russia shortly.

Washington swiftly derided the upcoming summit as a sign that Putin was “begging” for help with his floundering invasion of Ukraine.

The confirmation from North Korea ends days of speculation after US and other officials said recently that Kim, who rarely leaves North Korea, was likely to head to Vladivostok for arms talks with Putin.

Kim has not travelled outside the North since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

South Korean broadcaster YTN said Seoul “expects that Chairman Kim will hold a meeting with President Putin of Russia around the day after tomorrow”, meaning Wednesday.

Vladivostok will be hosting the Eastern Economic Forum until Wednesday.

Moscow, a historical ally of Pyongyang, was a crucial backer of the isolated country for decades and their ties go back to the founding of North Korea 75 years ago.

Kim has been steadfast in his support for Moscow’s Ukraine invasion, including, Washington says, supplying rockets and missiles.

In July, Putin hailed Pyongyang’s “firm support for special military operations against Ukraine”.

– ‘Pay a price’ –

The White House recently warned that Pyongyang would “pay a price” if it supplies Moscow with weaponry for its war in Ukraine.

On Monday the United States described Putin as desperate in seeking a meeting with Kim.

“Having to travel across the length of his own country to meet with an international pariah to ask for assistance in a war that he expected to win in the opening month, I would characterize it as him begging for assistance,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters.

“President Putin launched this war against Ukraine, with its full-scale aggression, with a dream of restoring the glory of the Russian Empire. That hope, that expectation of his, has failed,” Miller said.

Washington has said Russia could use weapons from North Korea to attack Ukrainian food supplies and heating infrastructure heading into winter to “try to conquer territory that belongs to another sovereign nation”.

Miller renewed US warnings that a Moscow weapons deal with Pyongyang could trigger further sanctions.

Andrei Lankov, a North Korea expert at Kookmin University in Seoul, told AFP that a Putin-Kim summit was part of Moscow’s “gentle diplomatic blackmail” of Seoul because Russia did not want South Korea to supply weapons to Kyiv.

Seoul is a major arms exporter and has sold tanks to Kyiv’s ally Poland, but longstanding domestic policy bars it from selling weapons into active conflicts.

“The major worry of the Russian government now is a possible shipment of the South Korean ammunition to Ukraine, not just one shipment but a lot of shipments,” Lankov said.

Kim is well-known for his preference for train travel when it comes to international trips. His father and predecessor, Kim Jong Il, was famously scared of flying.

In 2019, the current leader made the 60-hour return train trip from Hanoi to Pyongyang by train after a summit with then-US president Donald Trump collapsed.

Amit Shah, JP Nadda Hold Madhya Pradesh Core Group Meeting In Delhi

New Delhi:

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday attended the Madhya Pradesh Core Group meeting at the residence of BJP national president JP Nadda in the national capital ahead of the state assembly election.

Earlier on August 17, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its first list of candidates for poll-bound Madhya Pradesh.

BJP declared the names of 39 candidates for the 230-seat Madhya Pradesh Assembly. The party has fielded its Indore district president Rajesh Sonkar to contest the election from the Sonkachh seat in Dewas district.

Former minister and Veteran Congress leader Sajjan Singh Verma is the sitting MLA from Sonkatch seat. In the 2013 state assembly polls, BJP leader Sonkar defeated Tulsi Ram Silawat (now Water Resource Minister) when Silawat was in Congress from the Sanwer seat in the Indore district.

In the last 2018 assembly polls, Mr Sonkar lost to Mr Silawat (when he was still in Congress) from the same Sanwer seat. But later in 2020, Mr Silawat quit the Congress party along with Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scidia and others and joined the BJP. After that Mr Silawat contested the by-poll on BJP’s ticket from the Sanwer seat and won the election.

It is worth mentioning that the Madhya Pradesh assembly polls are scheduled to be held later this year.

In 2018 after the state legislative polls, the Congress formed the government with Kamal Nath becoming the CM.

In 2020, 22 MLAs along with Jyotiraditya Scindia resigned from the Congress, thus leading to a political pandemonium in the state.

As a result, the Congress government collapsed in the state and the BJP came to power with Shivraj Singh Chouhan as the CM.

Army Officer Confesses To Murder Of Woman Found Dead In Dehradun, Arrested

Army Officer Confesses To Murder Of Woman Found Dead In Dehradun, Arrested

The army officer has confessed to the crime, police said. (Representational)

Dehradun:

An army officer allegedly killed a 30-year-old woman with whom he was in an extramarital relationship after she started pressuring him to marry her, police said on Monday.

Ramendu Upadhyay, a lieutenant colonel in the Army, was arrested on Monday for the murder of the woman whose body with injury marks on the head was found on the outskirts of the city previous day, SP (City) Sarita Dobhal said.

Upadhyay who was posted in Clement Town in Dehradun had alcohol with the woman, identified as Shreya Sharma, in a restaurant on Saturday night and offered to take her on a long drive to which she agreed. However, after reaching a desolate place on the outskirts of the city he parked the car and hit the woman repeatedly on the head with a hammer until she died, Sarita Dobhal said.

After killing Shreya, Upadhyay dumped her body along the roadside and drove away, the SP said, adding that the army officer was already married and was under pressure from the woman to marry her.

The army officer has confessed to the crime, she said. The murder weapon, the car used for the crime and the clothes Upadhyay was wearing at the time of committing the crime have been recovered, the SP said.

The army officer in his 40s had been transferred recently to Dehradun from Siliguri where he met Shreya, a woman of Nepali origin, for the first time in a dance bar.

Their friendship soon grew into a relationship, police said. Upadhyay told police that after being transferred to Dehradun, he had rented a separate flat for Shreya. They used to meet at her flat and she would often complain that he was not giving her the status of a wife, police said.
