Spanish teachers rally in Madrid in demand for better public education

Hundreds of teachers marched through the streets of the Spanish capital on Saturday, protesting against the privatization of public education and better working conditions.

“We are here defending public education, it is a very important public service. It is true warranty of equality of conditions between different social sectors. Public education is a true social elevator, the only one that allows the most disadvantaged people to progress socially. And we find a political movement that goes in the opposite direction here in Madrid, that supports concerted and private education to the detriment of public education, which will be left for people with fewer resources”, said one of the protesters.

“We are starting the courses in Madrid and as always, with a shortage of teachers, with classrooms full of students. There is a lack of media, there is a lack of institutes, there is a lack of cabbages. There are many construction booths, many barracks where the kids are thought, and we cannot allow it one more year.”, stated another protester.

The march, which started at the Neptune fountain, went around the center of Madrid and ended in front of the Cibeles palace.

Protesters carried placards and banners displayed by the demonstrators reading ‘Public education, neither bought, nor sold, It is to be defended’, ‘More teachers and more doctors!’, and ‘More investment to the public school’, among others and chanted slogans denouncing privatization.

The Spanish government’s public spending in the educational sector has been repeatedly criticized during similar events throughout the year.

Juventus Midfielder Paul Pogba Provisionally Suspended For Doping

Juventus and France midfielder Paul Pogba has been provisionally suspended after a doping control detected elevated levels of testosterone, Italian anti-doping authorities (Nado) told AFP on Monday. After a nightmare season between injuries and a blackmail affair, the 30-year-old’s dreams of bouncing back were shattered by the alleged doping offence after Juventus’s 3-0 win at Udinese on August 20, during which he was an unused substitute.

On Monday, the 2018 world champion had told Qatari broadcaster Al Jazeera of his “desire to play” after a “difficult year” which could have “destroyed” him.

Instead he received a new blow.

Nado said Pogba had violated anti-doping rules when they found the prohibited substance “non-endogenous testosterone metabolites”.

Juventus said in a statement that Pogba had “received a precautionary suspension”.

“The club reserves the right to consider the next procedural steps,” the statement added.

The test concerns the ‘A’ sample, and if the ‘B’ sample also tests positive for testosterone Pogba could face a four-year ban.

In a message sent to AFP, Pogba’s agent Rafaela Pimenta said she was “awaiting the second sample and cannot have an opinion before the results”.

“What is certain is that Paul Pogba never wanted to break a rule,” she added.

‘Difficult year’

Pogba rejoined Juventus in July 2022 from Manchester United.

From 2012 to 2016 he had helped Juve win four Serie A titles and two Italian Cups, and reach the Champions League final in 2015.

Pogba had been a star player in France’s 2018 World Cup triumph but his 2022-2023 season was blighted by injury and a multi-million euro blackmail plot involving childhood friends and one of his brothers.

He played just ten games for Juventus that season and missed the 2022 World Cup with France.

Last season he played six Serie A games but had been slated for a return to action against Lazio at the weekend and said in the interview with Al Jazeera he was raring to go.

“I’ve had a difficult year so I’ve this anger and this wish to play football,” Pogba told Al Jazeera.

“The only people that can hurt you are the people close to you. Enemies you know where they are, but friends, family, that you think they’re happy for you, they can destroy you,” he said.

“You have to be careful, money change people, can break up a family,” he said of the multimillion euros extortion efforts by former friends and his own brother Mattias.

Pogba said that at times he had been deeply demotivated by the matter.

“I was just by myself thinking I don’t want to have money anymore, I don’t want to play anymore, I just want to be with normal people, so they will love me for me, not for the fame, not for the money,” he said.

After this latest setback Pogba now faces an anxious wait for the result of his ‘B’ test.

3rd Phase Of Mandatory Gold Hallmarking Begins In 55 Districts, 17 States

The government said the 3rd phase of mandatory hallmarking of gold has come into force

New Delhi:

The government on Friday said the third phase of mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery and artefacts has come into force in 55 new districts in 16 states and one Union territory.

Gold hallmarking is a purity certification of the precious metal and was voluntary in nature till June 16, 2021, when the government decided to implement mandatory gold hallmarking in a phased manner.

Currently, a total of 343 districts are covered under mandatory hallmarking. In the first phase, launched on June 23, 2021, 256 districts were covered, while the second phase from April 4, 2022, included 32 more districts.

According to the Consumer Affairs Ministry, an order for implementation of the third phase of the mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery and gold artefacts was notified on September 8.

The third phase of the mandatory hallmarking will cover an additional 55 new districts in 16 states and one Union territory, it said in a statement.

Eight districts, including East Champaran, will be covered in Bihar, five districts each in Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra, and four districts in Telangana under the third phase.

Three districts each will be covered in Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, while two districts each in Assam, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.

In Rajasthan, the mandatory gold hallmarking will be implemented in one district — Jalore — during the third phase.

Nodal agency Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has successfully implemented mandatory hallmarking in the last two phases, wherein more than 4 lakh gold articles are being hallmarked with Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) every day.

Since the implementation of mandatory hallmarking, the ministry said, the number of registered jewellers has increased from 34,647 to 1,81,590, while Assaying and Hallmarking Centers (AHCs) rose to 1,471 from 945.

“More than 26 crore articles of gold jewellery have been hallmarked with HUID so far,” the ministry said.

Consumers are encouraged to verify the authenticity and purity of the hallmarked gold jewellery items with the HUID number purchased by using ‘verify HUID’ in the BIS Care App, which can be downloaded from the Play Store.

The number of downloads of the BIS Care App has increased from 2.3 lakhs during 2021-22 to 12.4 lakh in the current financial year. Further, more than one crore hits of ‘verify HUID’ in the BIS Care App have been recorded as of date in the span of the last two years, it added.

Watch: 2.2 Million Litres Wine Flowed Through Portugal Town. Here's Why

Watch: 2.2 Million Litres Wine Flowed Through Portugal Town. Here's Why

Sao Lorenco de Bairro in Portugal was in for a surprise on Sunday when a river of red wine began flowing through the streets of the small town.

Residents watched stunned as millions of litres of wine flowed down from a steep hill in the town and gushed down the streets, reports said. Videos show a seemingly endless river of wine flowing down the town’s lanes.

The mysterious wine river originated from a town distillery where tanks carrying barrels with over 2 million litres of red wine unexpectedly burst, The New York Post said.

The massive spill, which could fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool, also raised an environmental alert as the river of wine was headed to an actual river nearby. The wine also reportedly flooded a basement at a home near the distillery before it made its way to the rest of the town.

The fire department swung into action to stop the wine flood before it turned the Certima River into a river of wine. The flood was redirected and made to flow into a nearby field, the New York Post report said.

Levira Distillery has apologised for the bizarre incident and assured that it has dredged up the wine-soaked land in the town. “We assume full responsibility for the costs associated with cleaning and repairing the damage, having teams do so immediately,” the distillery said in a statement.

Justin Trudeau Still In India, Backup Plane En Route After Jet Trouble

Justin Trudeau Still In India, Backup Plane En Route After Jet Trouble

The plane drama only adds to JustinTrudeau’s woes in his travels to India

New Delhi:

A backup plane and spare parts are en route to India for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is stranded along with his country’s delegation after the plane they arrived on broke down.

Trudeau will either fly home on the backup plane or wait for the original plane to be repaired, said a government official, speaking to Bloomberg on condition they weren’t named. The official declined to give details about what exactly needs replacing.

“The Canadian Armed Forces continue their best efforts to get the Canadian delegation home,” said a statement from Trudeau’s office. “Their latest update shows an earliest possible departure of Tuesday late afternoon. The situation remains fluid.”

The plane drama only adds to Trudeau’s woes in his travels to India. His first trip in 2018 became a diplomatic disaster after it emerged that a man who had been convicted of attempting to assassinate an Indian politician on Canadian soil somehow ended up on Canada’s guest list for an event.

On this trip, even before the plane breakdown, Trudeau had been publicly criticized by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly allowing the “anti-India activities of extremist elements in Canada,” a reference to Sikh groups that advocate for an independent homeland known as Khalistan.

Trudeau’s national security adviser, meanwhile, has said that India is a major source of foreign meddling in Canada’s affairs. The two prime ministers did not hold a formal bilateral meeting at the summit, but in a brief conversation on the sidelines, Trudeau said the pair discussed foreign interference and “respect for the rule of law.”

Back home, Trudeau’s travel delays also stirred debate about the crumbling nature of Canada’s state infrastructure.

The Airbus A310s that carry Trudeau and other top officials abroad date back to the 1980s and are badly showing their age. They are so old they require refueling stops for Trudeau’s trips to Asia, often with stopovers in Alaska and Japan before reaching their final destination.

Even so, the planes touched off a controversy in the early 1990s when the government of former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney bought and retrofitted them. Mulroney’s successor, Jean Chretien, famously derided one them as a “flying Taj Mahal” and refused to use it for official trips for fear of looking out of touch with ordinary Canadians.

The government is in the midst of replacing its fleet of government transports with Airbus 330s, but they are still being retrofitted for use.

Meanwhile, Trudeau’s official residence is also in such terrible shape that he and his family have never lived there since he was elected in 2015. The house, at 24 Sussex Drive in Ottawa, was filled with asbestos, faulty wiring, drafty windows and also has substandard security measures. The home has deteriorated to such a state because successive prime ministers have refused to spend the public money needed to restore it.

While a government agency has stripped out much of the problematic interior of the house, it’s an open question whether the residence will be restored and upgraded, at a cost that could top C$37 million ($27.2 million), or a new one is built instead. For now, Trudeau has been living in another government building on the grounds of Canada’s governor general.

North Korea's Kim Jong Un Arrives In Russia For Weapons Summit With Putin

North Korea's Kim Jong Un Arrives In Russia For Weapons Summit With Putin

North Korea has confirmed that its supreme leader Kim Jong Un left for Russia by Train on Sunday.

Seoul:

A train carrying North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has entered Russia, Russian state news agency Ria Novosti said Tuesday, ahead of a meeting with President Vladimir Putin.

The train crossed into Primorsky region from North Korea, the agency said, with images showing a train with dark green carriages being pulled along a track by a Russian Railways locomotive.

Meanwhile senior officials and Pyongyang residents gave him “a warm send-off”, according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Experts say Putin is seeking artillery shells and antitank missiles from North Korea for Moscow’s war in Ukraine, while Kim is reportedly in search of advanced technology for satellites and nuclear-powered submarines, as well as food aid for his impoverished nation.

Kim “left here by his train on Sunday afternoon to visit the Russian Federation,” KCNA said.

State media images showed Kim walking to his train on a red carpet with honour guard through the station.

Kim was accompanied by top North Korean military officials, including his defence chief, foreign minister and officials in charge of weapons production and space technology, state media said.

KCNA did not report on the location of Kim’s train Tuesday, including whether it had crossed the Russian border.

It would take at least 20 hours for Kim to reach Vladivostok from Pyongyang on a 1,200 kilometre (745 miles) journey, assuming that Kim’s special train — which is likely very heavy due to its armour — travels at around 60 kilometres per hour, South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo said.

On Monday KCNA had reported that “the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un will meet and have a talk with Comrade Putin during the visit.”

The Kremlin also confirmed that Kim would visit Russia.

Washington swiftly derided the upcoming summit as a sign that Putin was “begging” for help with his floundering invasion of Ukraine.

The confirmation from North Korea ends days of speculation after US and other officials said recently that Kim, who rarely leaves North Korea, was likely to head to Vladivostok for arms talks with Putin.

Kim has not travelled outside the North since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. His last proper overseas trip was in 2019, also to Russia to meet Putin.

South Korean broadcaster YTN said Seoul “expects that Chairman Kim will hold a meeting with President Putin of Russia around the day after tomorrow”, meaning Wednesday.

It is possible the pair will meet on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, the Far East city closest to the North Korea-Russia border. The forum runs until Wednesday.

Moscow, a historical ally of Pyongyang, was a crucial backer of the isolated country for decades and their ties go back to the founding of North Korea 75 years ago.

Kim has been steadfast in his support for Moscow’s Ukraine invasion, including, Washington says, supplying rockets and missiles.

In July, Putin hailed Pyongyang’s “firm support for special military operations against Ukraine”.

‘Pay a price’

The White House recently warned that Pyongyang would “pay a price” if it supplies Moscow with weaponry for its war in Ukraine.

On Monday the United States described Putin as desperate in seeking a meeting with Kim.

“Having to travel across the length of his own country to meet with an international pariah to ask for assistance in a war that he expected to win in the opening month, I would characterise it as him begging for assistance,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters.

Washington has said Russia could use weapons from North Korea to attack Ukrainian food supplies and heating infrastructure heading into winter to “try to conquer territory that belongs to another sovereign nation”.

Andrei Lankov, a North Korea expert at Kookmin University in Seoul, told AFP that a Putin-Kim summit was part of Moscow’s “gentle diplomatic blackmail” of Seoul because Russia did not want South Korea to supply weapons to Kyiv.

Seoul is a major arms exporter and has sold tanks to Kyiv’s ally Poland, but longstanding domestic policy bars it from selling weapons into active conflicts.

“The major worry of the Russian government now is a possible shipment of the South Korean ammunition to Ukraine, not just one shipment but a lot of shipments,” Lankov said.

Over 2,000 Feared Dead, Thousands Missing After Severe Floods In Libya

Over 2,000 Feared Dead, Thousands Missing After Severe Floods In Libya

Authorities in eastern Libya said at least 2,000 people were killed and thousands more were missing after a massive flood ripped through the city of Derna following a heavy storm and rain.

Ahmed Mismari, the spokesperson for the Libyan National Army (LNA) that controls eastern Libya, said in a televised news conference that the disaster came after dams above Derna had collapsed, “sweeping whole neighbourhoods with their residents into the sea”.

Mismari put the number of missing at 5,000-6,000.

Earlier on Monday, the head of the Red Crescent aid group in the region had said Derna’s death count was at 150 and expected to hit 250. Reuters could not immediately verify either figure.

Libya is politically divided between east and west and public services have crumbled since a 2011 NATO-backed uprising that prompted years of conflict. The internationally recognised government in Tripoli does not control eastern areas.

In Tripoli, the three-person Presidential Council which functions as head of state in the divided country asked the international community to help. “We call on brotherly and friendly countries and international organisations to provide assistance,” it said.

Osama Hamad, the head of a parallel eastern-based administration, told local television that more than 2,000 were dead and thousands more missing.

After pummelling Greece last week, Storm Daniel swept in over the Mediterranean on Sunday, swamping roads and destroying buildings in Derna, and hitting other settlements along the coast, including Libya’s second biggest city of Benghazi.

Videos of Derna showed a wide torrent running through the city centre where a far narrower waterway had previously flowed. Ruined buildings stood on either side.

Eastern Libya’s Almostkbal TV broadcast footage that showed people stranded on the roofs of their vehicles calling for help and waters washing away cars.

“The missing are in the thousands, and the dead exceed 2,000,” Osama Hamad told al-Masar TV. “Entire neighbourhoods in Derna have disappeared, along with their residents … swept away by water.”

Mismari said seven members of the LNA had died in the flood.

SURROUNDED BY WATER

Derna resident Saleh al-Obaidi said he had managed to flee with his family, though houses in a valley near the city had collapsed.

“People were asleep and woke up and found their homes surrounded by water,” he told Reuters.

Ahmed Mohamed, another resident, said: “We were asleep, and when we woke up, we found water besieging the house. We are inside and trying to get out.”

Witnesses said the water level had reached 10 feet.

West of Derna, visuals showed a collapsed road between the port town of Sousse and Shahat, home to the Greek-founded and UNESCO-listed archaeological site Cyrene.

Libya’s eastern-based parliament declared three days of mourning. Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah, prime minister of the interim government in Tripoli, also declared three days of mourning in all the affected cities, calling them “disaster areas”.

Four major oil ports in Libya – Ras Lanuf, Zueitina, Brega and Es Sidra – were closed from Saturday evening for three days, two oil engineers told Reuters.

Search-and-rescue operations were ongoing, witnesses said. Authorities declared a state of extreme emergency, closing schools and stores and imposing a curfew.

In Tripoli, the interim government directed all state agencies to “immediately deal” with the damage and floods in eastern cities, but the administration has no sway in the east.

However, Dbeibah’s government works closely with the Central Bank of Libya, which disburses funds to government departments across the country.

The United Nations in Libya said it was following the storm closely and would “provide urgent relief assistance in support of response efforts at local and national levels”.

Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani instructed the government to send aid to the affected area in eastern Libya, Qatar’s state news agency reported.

Asia Cup: Pakistan call up backups for injured Haris and Naseem

Colombo: Pakistan have called up pacers Shahnawaz Dahani and Zaman Khan as backups for Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah after the duo picked up niggles in the Super Four stage match of the Asia Cup against India on Monday.

Naseem and Rauf picked up niggles during Pakistan’s 228-run loss to India on Monday and are no certainty to recover in time for the final match of the Super Four stage against Sri Lanka on Thursday.

This is only a precautionary measure keeping in mind the fitness and well-being of the players ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup next month.

Haris and Naseem will continue to remain under the observation of the team’s medical panel. The team management will only request a replacement from the ACC technical committee if Naseem or Haris are ruled out for the next seven days.

“This is only a precautionary measure keeping in mind the fitness and well-being of the players ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup next month and the two will continue to remain under the observation of the team’s medical panel,” the Pakistan Cricket Board said in a statement.

“The team management will only request replacement from the ACC technical committee if Haris or Naseem are ruled out for the next seven days.” The magnitude of Pakistan’s loss to India saw Babar Azam’s side slip to third place on the current Super Four table, meaning a win is likely to be required in that match against Sri Lanka to book a place in this year’s final.

Dahani has played two ODIs for his country and a total of 11 T20I contests, while 22-year-old Zamar has featured just six times for Pakistan in the shortest format of the game and never seen any action in an international ODI.

Report: US set to approve supply of missiles packed with cluster bombs to Ukraine

The United States is reportedly set to approve arming Ukraine with longer-range missiles that are packed with cluster bombs, despite widespread concerns that they can cause indiscriminate casualties among civilians.

According to a Monday report, citing three unnamed US officials, Washington is “considering shipping either or both Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) that can fly up to 190 miles (306 kilometers), or Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) missiles with a 45-mile (72-kilometer) range packed with cluster bombs.”

Ukraine is currently equipped with 155-mm artillery with a maximum range of 18 miles carrying up to 48 bomblets. The ATACMS can fire around 300 or more bomblets, while the GMLRS rocket system is capable of dispersing up to 404 cluster munitions.

“If approved, either option would be available for rapid shipment to Kiev,” the report said.

The munitions are expected to be used against Russian forces present in those Ukrainian territories, which have voted to join Russia since the onset of the war.

Washington has allocated more than $40 billion worth of military aid to Kiev since last February when the war started.

In September 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree for the formal accession of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia to the Russian Federation, which came following respective referendums in each of those regions.

Kiev, however, views those referendums as “illegal,” and has been pressing its Western allies to outfit it with long-range weaponry, so it can strike deep within those territories.

Cluster munitions generally eject bomblets that can cover five times as much area as conventional bombs.

They are banned under the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) because unexploded bomblets can pose a risk to civilians for years after the fighting is over.

The CCM, which took effect in 2010, bans all use, production, transfer, and stockpiling of cluster bombs. More than 100 countries have signed the treaty, but the US, Russia, and Ukraine are yet to join.

Last month, Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov lashed out at the US over its support for Ukraine’s use of the globally-banned munitions, noting that the bombs have already killed a Russian journalist.

Antonov slammed Pentagon Press Secretary Pat Ryder for the latter’s earlier remarks claiming that the US has “all indications” that Ukraine is “properly” employing cluster munitions.

“Attempts by US officials to portray Ukraine’s use of controversial cluster munitions as appropriate and legitimate are shameless and outrageous,” Antonov said, adding, “I would like to know whether ‘the proper use’ of cluster bombs is also true for the assassination of Russian journalist Rostislav Zhuravlev.”

Pakistan Cricketer Left Bleeding After Injury. Rahul's Gesture Goes Viral

KL Rahul checks up on Agha Salman during Asia Cup 2023 match© AFP

Pakistan cricket team batter Agha Salman sustained an injury that left his face bloodied during the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match against India on Monday. The right-handed batter tried to sweep a delivery from Ravindra Jadeja but the ball bounced and took the top edge of his bat before hitting him straight on the face. He was visibly in pain after the incident and the wound started bleeding as the Pakistan physio rushed onto the field. KL Rahul was one of the first ones on the field to quickly check on him after the incident and his gesture has quickly gone viral on social media following the incident.

Virat Kohli‘s supreme fitness was evident in his 47th ODI century while comeback man KL Rahul produced an equally engaging ton on his comeback as India thrashed a listless Pakistan by a record 228-run margin in a rain-marred Super Four game of the Asia Cup.

This is India’s biggest win in terms of runs against the cross-border neighbours.

India posted an imposing 356 for 2, as Kohli (122 not out off 94 balls) and Rahul (111 not out off 106 balls), which was his sixth ODI hundred, pummeled a hapless Pakistan, whose chase ended at 128 for 8 as Kuldeep Yadav (5/25) scythed through them.

On the century count in ODIs, Kohli now stands just two behind Sachin Tendulkar‘s record 49.

Once India restarted the day from 147 for 2 in 24.1 overs, they needed Kohli and Rahul, the two overnight batters, to go big, and they did that in some style.

Along with Rahul, Kohli amassed 233 runs for the unbeaten third wicket stand – the highest ODI partnership for India against Pakistan.
