10,000 Missing After Deadly Floods In Eastern Libya: Red Cross

10,000 Missing After Deadly Floods In Eastern Libya: Red Cross

Floods in Libya: Search and rescue operations are ongoing in Libya after massive storm

Libya:

The death count from freak floods in eastern Libya is expected to soar dramatically, with 10,000 people reported missing, the Red Cross warned on Tuesday.

Officials in Libya have said at least 150 people were killed in the flooding in Libya after storm Daniel swept the Mediterranean, lashing Turkey, Bulgaria and Greece.

But Tamer Ramadan of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said the actual toll was likely many times higher.

“Our teams on the ground are still doing their assessment, (but) from what we see and from the news coming to us, the death count is huge,” he told reporters in Geneva via video link from Tunis.

“It might reach to the thousands.”

“We don’t have a definite number right now,” he said, stressing though that the organisation had independent sources saying “the number of missing people is hitting 10,000 persons so far.”

Speaking on the Libyan network Almasar, Oussama Hamad, Prime Minister of the east-based government, has reported “more than 2,000 dead and thousands missing” in the city of Derna alone, but no medical sources or emergency services have confirmed such figures.

But Ramadan said that judging from the figures he was seeing, “it’s very likely that the number declared (by the eastern official) could be close to the correct number”.

He said he hoped the IFRC would be able to provide a more precise toll of the disaster later Tuesday.

“The humanitarian needs are much more beyond the abilities of the Libyan Red Crescent and even the abilities of the government,” Ramadan said.

“That’s why the government in the east has issued an international appeal for support,” he said, adding that IFRC was also preparing to launch an emergency appeal for funds towards the response.

Entire World Can Emulate India's Law on Farmers' Rights: President Murmu

Entire World Can Emulate India's Law on Farmers' Rights: President Murmu

The President also inaugurated the Plant Authority Bhawan and an online portal.

New Delhi:

President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday said India’s law on protection of plant varieties and farmers’ rights can be emulated for the entire world as it gains importance amid the challenges of climate change.

Addressing the first ever global symposium on farmers’ rights in Delhi, the President said India has taken a lead in introducing the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Rights Act (PPVFR), which is aligned to the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for food and agriculture to protect farmers.

India provides a range of rights to farmers that include use, reuse, save, share and sell the unbranded seeds of a registered variety. Besides, farmers can register their own varieties which get protection, she said.

“Such an act can serve as an excellent model worthy of emulation for the entire world,” the President noted.

She further said this gains importance amid challenges posed by climate change and also to fulfill the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

The President also inaugurated the Plant Authority Bhawan and an online portal.

Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, Minister of State for agriculture Kailash Choudhary were among others present at the event.

Apple's iPhone 15 Launch Clouded By China Problems

Apple's iPhone 15 Launch Clouded By China Problems

Apple will also have to grapple with competition from Huawei Technologies in China

Cupertino, California:

Apple on Tuesday is expected to unveil a new iPhone 15 lineup as questions about market access in China and competition hang over the world’s most valuable listed company.

The iPhone made up more than half of Apple’s $394.3 billion in sales last year, but it faces new challenges with selling in China, the Cupertino, California firm’s third-largest market.

Apple’s latest phones are expected to have new charging ports, titanium cases, and cameras, but their debut at its Apple Park headquarters at 10 am PT (1700 GMT) will come as the Chinese government has expanded some restrictions on using iPhones.

Apple will also have to grapple with competition from Huawei Technologies, which was its top rival in China’s premium smartphone market until US export controls ruined Huawei’s phone business in 2019.

Last week, Huawei started selling the Mate 60 Pro, a high-end phone that uses Chinese-made chips that some US lawmakers believe were manufactured in violation of US trade curbs.

Huawei wants to gain an edge over Apple with add-on features like satellite calling that relies on China’s government-backed network. Apple’s current iPhone lineup includes satellite capabilities, though they are meant only for emergency situations.

Apple iphone 15 Launch

Apple on Tuesday is likely to focus on its new product lineup. By far the biggest change for most Apple customers will be a switch from Apple’s propriety “Lightning” charging cables to USB-C, a standard that Apple already uses on its laptops and some high-end iPads.

Apple was forced into the change by European regulations, but analysts believe that the company will position the change as an upgrade, taking advantage of faster data speeds that can transfer high-quality videos made with iPhones.

Analysts are also expecting a new “periscope” camera technology that could give phones better zoom capabilities and titanium cases, as well as upgraded chips. Such “periscope” lenses can use mirrors or prisms to get a longer lens without having to make the camera module much larger.

The biggest question of the day will be whether Apple reserves those features for a new top-end device and makes smaller upgrades to its cheaper models.

“Just like we saw people who aren’t Ultra athletes buy the Apple Watch Ultra, we’re going to see a bunch of people buy this even if they aren’t camera or photography enthusiasts, just because they like the latest and greatest,” said Ben Bajarin, chief executive and principal analyst of Creative Strategies.

“That by itself creates that buzz and momentum and allure to the top end.”

Apple To Increase Avg Price

Apple is expected to increase the average price per phone sold to boost its revenue, but the question is whether it does that by raising prices across the board or just on premium versions. The global smartphone market has slumped from shipping 294.5 million total phones to 268 million in the second quarter, but Apple’s shipments declined the least of any major smartphone maker, dropping from 46.5 million phones to 45.3 million, according to data from Counterpoint Research.

“The truth of the matter is, we’re in a very down smartphone market,” said Bob O’Donnell, head of TECHnalysis Research.

O’Donnell said he will also be on the lookout for any hints about Apple’s plans with what is known as generative artificial intelligence, the technology trend behind applications like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s “Copilot” assistant technologies for its Office software.

Analysts have repeatedly prodded Apple about its plans for such technology but the company has given few hints so far, other than Chief Executive Tim Cook’s comments in July that the company’s secret work on the technology is driving up its research spending.

“Will Apple tease an advanced form of Siri? That would be something that would generate some excitement,” O’Donnell said.

With his batting prowess and great consistency, Virat Kohli became the fastest player to score 10,000 runs in just 205 matches.

Following in his footsteps was Rohit Sharma, who accomplished the feat in 241 matches, showcasing his ability to dominate bowlers.

Likewise, Sachin Tendulkar, known as the ‘God of Cricket,’ took 259 matches to reach 10,000 runs.

Flooding leaves thousands dead, missing in eastern Libya after dams collapse

At least 2,000 people have been killed and thousands more are missing after a devastating flood hit the city of Derna in eastern Libya, resulting in the collapse of two dams, authorities say.

Ahmed Mismari, spokesperson for the eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA) that controls eastern Libya, said the disaster struck when the two dams above Derna collapsed following a heavy storm and rain.

The dams’ collapse swept the “whole neighborhoods with their residents into the sea,” he said.

Mismari put the number missing at 5000 to 6000, adding seven members of the LNA had also died in the flood.

He said the floods have affected many cities along the eastern coast running all the way to Benghazi, the second most populous city.

Libya plunged into deadly chaos after the overthrow and killing of its long-serving ruler Muammar Gaddafi following a bombing campaign by the US-led NATO military alliance in 2011.

Since then the country has been divided into a UN-recognized government in western Libya and a parallel institution in the east of the country.

Osama Hamad, the head of a parallel eastern-based administration said, “The missing are in the thousands, and the dead exceed 2,000.”

“Entire neighborhoods in Derna have disappeared, along with their residents … swept away by water,” he told al-Masar TV on Monday.

The head of Libya’s Emergency and Ambulance authority, Osama Aly, explained after the dam collapse “all of the water headed to an area near Derna, which is a mountainous coastal area.”

According to Aly, residences situated in valleys were swept away by forceful muddy currents that carried vehicles and debris.

The disruption of phone lines in the city has complicated rescue operations, rendering workers unable to access Derna due to the extensive damage.

Aly told the Al Hurra channel earlier that the authorities were not prepared for the magnitude of the calamity.

“Libya was not prepared for a catastrophe like that. It has not witnessed that level of catastrophe before. We are admitting there were shortcomings even though this is the first time we face that level of catastrophe,” he said.

Several countries have conveyed their condolences and extended assistance to Libya, as rescue teams work diligently to locate survivors amidst the debris and rubble.

“The United Nations in Libya is closely following the emergency caused by severe weather conditions in the eastern region of the country,” stated the United Nations Support Mission in Libya in a post on X.

The rain experienced over the weekend is attributed to the residual effects of a strong low-pressure system, officially named Storm Daniel by the national meteorological services in southeastern Europe.

This storm caused severe flooding in Greece before moving into a tropical cyclone causing dangerous conditions in the Mediterranean Sea and coastal regions.

The remnants of this storm are currently impacting northern Libya and are expected to move eastward towards northern Egypt gradually.

The anticipated rainfall for the next two days could exceed 50 mm, a significant increase from the average of less than 10 mm recorded in this region throughout September.

Oil Nears $90 For 1st Time In 2023, Fuel Price Unlikely To Change In India

Oil Nears $90 For First Time In 2023, Fuel Price Unlikely To Change In India

Oil prices hit a 10-month high of nearly USD 90 per barrel

New Delhi:

Oil prices hit a 10-month high of nearly USD 90 per barrel as Saudi Arabia and Russia extended their voluntary production and export cuts until the end of the year.

For a nation that is more than 85 per cent dependent on imports for its oil needs, the surge in prices means India will have to shell out more and the prospect of returning to market-driven petrol and diesel prices in the near future diminished further.

Brent crude prices surged around 6.5 per cent over the past week after Saudi Arabia, which leads the expanded OPEC cartel with Russia, decided to keep its one million barrels a day reduction in supplies to the global market until the end of December.

Russia has added its own voluntary export cuts in recent months.

The move has led to Brent rising above USD 90 a barrel for the first time this year on Tuesday. On Wednesday, it was trading at USD 89.67 per barrel.

The basket of crude oil that India imports has averaged USD 89.81 per barrel this month, up from USD 86.43 in August, according to oil ministry data.

The Indian basket was hovering in the range of USD 73-75 per barrel in May and June, rekindling hopes for a return to market-based pricing and a reduction in petrol and diesel prices.

But rates spurt to USD 80.37 per barrel in July and now to near USD 90.

“Public sector oil companies had been recouping losses they incurred for holding rates when crude oil prices shot through the roof last year. In May, international oil prices and retail pump rates had come at par.

“But now with the prices rising, the difference between cost and retail prices will reappear,” an industry official said.

India imports 85 per cent of its oil needs and its fuel pricing is indexed to international rates.

Petrol and diesel prices have been on a freeze for a record 17 months in a row. Petrol costs Rs 96.72 per litre in the national capital and diesel comes for Rs 89.62 a litre.

State-owned fuel retailers are supposed to revise petrol and diesel prices daily based on a 15-day rolling average of benchmark international fuel prices but they haven’t done that since April 6, 2022.

Prices were last changed on May 22 when the government cut excise duty to give relief to consumers from a spike in retail rates that followed a surge in international oil prices.

Sources said if international oil prices had stayed around USD 73-74 a barrel range, oil companies would have re-started daily price revision.

Higher prices would mean domestic producers like the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) get a higher price. However, the incremental revenues are likely to be ploughed by the government in the form of a windfall profit tax.

The tax, levied in the form of Special Additional Excise Duty (SAED), on domestically produced crude oil was reduced to Rs 6,700 per tonne starting September 2, from Rs 7,100 a tonne previously.

A windfall tax is levied on domestic crude oil if rates of the global benchmark rise above USD 75 per barrel.

Crude oil pumped out of the ground and from below the seabed is refined and converted into fuels like petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel.

Demand For Oil, Gas And Coal Will Peak This Decade, Warns Energy Agency

Demand For Oil, Gas And Coal Will Peak This Decade, Warns Energy Agency

Paris:

World demand for oil, gas and coal is forecast for the first time to peak this decade, the head of the International Energy Agency wrote in the Financial Times on Tuesday. The IEA’s annual World Energy Outlook, due out next month, will show that “the world is on the cusp of a historic turning point,” executive director Fatih Birol wrote in the FT.

The shift will have implications for the battle against climate change as it will bring forward the peak in greenhouse gas emissions, Birol said.

Based on government policies worldwide, demand for the three fossil fuels is “set to hit a peak in the coming years”, Birol said.

“This is the first time that a peak in demand is visible for each fuel this decade,” he wrote, adding that this was happening sooner than anticipated.

Oil demand is expected to peak before 2030 thanks to the growth of electric vehicles.

Gas demand will drop later this decade in advanced economies as heat pumps and renewable energy are increasingly used while Europe is shifting away from Russian supplies following the war in Ukraine.

Coal demand will peak in “the next few years”, he added, pointing to falling investments in the fossil fuel and the growth of renewable energy and nuclear power in top consumer China.
