Pune:

Three people were arrested for allegedly kidnapping 14-year-old boy and demanding a ransom of Rs 30 lakh from his family near here on Tuesday, said police.

The boy was also rescued by the police.

According to the police, the boy, the son of a scrap dealer, was kidnapped by three people on Tuesday morning from the Tathawade area of the adjoining Pimpri-Chinchwad township.

“On receiving a complaint from the family, a team were formed and during investigation, it was revealed the kidnappers had taken the boy to Saswad. The kidnappers had earlier called a relative of the boy and demanded Rs 30 lakh and threatened to kill him if the ransom money was not paid,” said an officer of the Pimpri-Chinchwad crime branch.

He said after tracing the location of the kidnappers, a police team was dispatched and they were arrested from Saswad and the boy was rescued from their clutches.

The accused were identified by the police as Tejan Lokhande, Arjun Rathod, and Vikas Mhaske.

The police said the trio knew that the boy’s father was financially well-off and targeted him for quick money.

“The accused wanted to open a hotel and for that they needed money. This led them to plan the kidnapping,” said another police officer.

Kota, Rajasthan:

Congress MLA Bharat Singh on Tuesday shaved his head as a mark of protest against Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot whom he accused of protecting a corrupt minister and ignoring his advice.

The incident took place four days after state Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Ashok Chandana staged a ‘dharna’ on electricity issues against his own government at Bundi district headquarters.

The Sangod MLA and his supporters also burned an effigy of Ravan on Tuesday outside his residence in the Gumanpura area in Kota city.

He shaved his head in the morning as the inaugural of Chambal Riverfront was underway with fanfare.

Bharat Singh also sent a letter to Ashok Gehlot earlier accusing him of protecting state Mining Minister Pramod Jain Bhaya, whom he referred to as ‘Bhaya.’ Bharat Singh in his letter accused Ashok Gehlot of trading off his integrity and principles to protect the minister as he “offered” him his hair to mark his capitulation.

“It is a mark of protest against the Chief Minister,” Bharat Singh told reporters.

2 Deaths In Kerala Due To Nipah Virus, Centre Sends Team For Assistance

Nipah Virus: The first death took place on August 30 and the second death on Monday. (Representational)

New Delhi:

Two people have died due to Nipah virus in Kerala’s Kozhikode district, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya confirmed today. The virus has also infected two others in the same district, The Kerala government informed.

The Centre’s  confirmation comes hours after a district-wide health alert was issued yesterday after two “unnatural” deaths were reported from a private hospital.

“A central team sent to Kerala to take stock of the situation and assist the state government in Nipah virus management,” Mr Mandaviya said.

The first death took place on August 30 and the second death on Monday, reported news agency PTI.

“Nipah virus infection has been confirmed in Kozhikode district. Two people died due to infections. Of the four people whose saliva was sent for testing, two were Nipah positive and two were Nipah negative,” Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in a Facebook post.

How Kerala Government Is Preparing

The Kerala government has set up a control room in Kozhikode and advised people to use masks as a precautionary measure.

Earlier in the day, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan advised people to exercise caution and said there was no reason to worry as those who were in close contact with the victims were under treatment.

“There is nothing to worry about. Those who were in contact with the two are being traced and treated. Being careful is the key to tackling the situation. Everyone is requested to cooperate with the action plan prepared by the health department,” the Chief Minister said.

Earlier Outbreaks In Kerala

There was a Nipah virus outbreak in the Kozhikode and Malappuram districts in 2018 and later in 2021, a case of Nipah virus was reported in Kozhikode.

Nipah Virus is caused by fruit bats and is potentially fatal to humans as well as animals, according to the World Health Organisation or WHO. Along with respiratory illness, it is also known to cause fever, muscular pain, headache, fever, dizziness, and nausea.

US-Mexico border 'is world’s deadliest’ migrant route

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has ranked the United States-Mexico border as the world’s most deadly route for asylum-seekers passing on land.

IOM reported on Tuesday that it had documented 686 deaths and disappearances of asylum-seekers on the US-Mexico border in 2022, making it the deadliest land route for migrants worldwide on record.

It said this figure represented nearly half of the 1,457 asylum-seekers’ deaths and disappearances recorded throughout the Americas in 2022, the deadliest year on record since IOM’s Missing Migrants Project (MMP) began in 2014.

IOM’s MMP annual report, which underscores the growing death toll and increasing risks that asylum-seekers face throughout the region, showed these figures represented the lowest estimates available as many more deaths were likely to go unrecorded due to lack of data from official sources about the deaths of illegal migrants.

According to the data in this report, the number of deaths and disappearances in the US-Mexico border had decreased by 8 percent from the previous year.

The report suggested that the 2022 figure is likely higher than the available information suggests, due to missing official data, including information from Texas border county coroner’s offices and the Mexican search and rescue agency.

Approximately half of the deaths on the US-Mexico border were linked to the perilous crossing of the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts, far more than other desert regions where irregular asylum-seekers’ passing is prevalent.

Some 212 people died in the Sahara Desert in 2022.

However, due to the remoteness of these areas, data in this regard is likely incomplete.

“These alarming figures are a stark reminder of the need for decisive action by States,” said Michele Klein Solomon, IOM Regional Director for Regional Director for Central and North America and the Caribbean.

“Enhancing data collection is crucial. Ultimately, what is needed is for countries to act on the data to ensure safe, regular migration routes are accessible.”

"No Impact On Price": India On Removing Additional Duties On US Products

'No Impact On Price': India On Removing Additional Duties On US Products

There is a regular duty of 50% and Rs 50 per kg minimum import price on apples.(Representational)

New Delhi:

The government on Tuesday said that the removal of additional retaliatory duties on imports of US apples, walnuts and almonds will not result in any negative impact on domestic producers.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that the opposition parties particularly Congress is politicizing the subject without having a complete understanding of the subject.

There is a regular duty of 50 per cent and Rs 50 per kg minimum import price on apples.

“We have just removed the retaliatory duty…the move would not have any impact on domestic apple producers. There will be no impact on prices also. Consumers will get more choices,” Goyal told reporters here.

Earlier in the day, Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce Peeyush Kumar said the Most Favoured Nation duty of 50 per cent and 100 per cent continues to be applicable on US apples and walnuts as only additional 20 per cent duty is removed.

There is no reduction on the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) duty on apples, walnuts and almonds, which still applies to all imported products, including US-origin products, he added.

“This measure will not result in any negative impact on domestic apple, walnut and almond producers. Rather, it will result in competition in the premium market segment of apples, walnuts and almonds, thereby ensuring better quality at competitive prices for our Indian consumers,” he told reporters here.

The market share of the US apples dwindled as other countries benefited from the imposition of additional retaliatory duties on the US apple and walnut imports.

He added that the removal of additional duties will now ensure fair competition among the countries which are exporting these products to India. The clarification has come amid the opposition Congress criticising the government’s decision to reduce import duty on apples.

The Centre has reduced the import duty on the Washington apple, which will also directly affect the horticulturalists of the State, thereby causing losses to them, the Congress said.

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on Monday appealed to the Centre to reconsider its decision to remove the additional duty on apples, walnuts and almonds imported from the US, saying the government should try to make its own people happy instead of pleasing foreigners.

French Watchdog Halts iPhone 12 Sales Over Too-High Radiation: Minister

French Watchdog Halts iPhone 12 Sales Over Too-High Radiation: Minister

Apple is expected to respond within two weeks related to the iPhone 12 issue.

Paris:

Apple must stop selling its iPhone 12 model in France due to above-threshold radiation levels, France’s junior minister for the digital economy told newspaper Le Parisien in an interview published on Tuesday.

France’s radiation watchdog ANFR notified Apple of its decision to ban iPhone 12 sales after it had carried out tests which showed the smartphone’s Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) was slightly higher than legally allowed, Jean-Noel Barrot told the paper.

Apple did not immediately reply to a Reuters request for comment.

Barrot said a software update would be sufficient to fix the radiation issues linked to the phone which the U.S. company has been selling since 2020.

“Apple is expected to respond within two weeks”, he said, adding: “If they fail to do so, I am prepared to order a recall of all iPhones 12 in circulation. The rule is the same for everyone, including the digital giants.”

The European Union has set safety limits for SAR values linked to exposure to mobile phones, which could increase the risk of some forms of cancer according to scientific studies.

The French watchdog will now pass on its findings to regulators in other EU member states. “In practical terms, this decision could have a snowball effect”, said Barrot.

In 2020, France widened regulations requiring retailers to display the radiation value of products on packaging beyond cell phones, including tablets and other electronic devices.

No Boats In Bhopal's Upper Lake, Orders Green Tribunal

No Boats In Bhopal's Upper Lake, Orders Green Tribunal

The Upper Lake is an important source of drinking water for Bhopal.

BHopal:

The National Green Tribunal has ordered that cruise boats and other motor propelled boats stop operating in the Upper lake in Bhopal. The order came after environmentalist Subhash Pandey approached the tribunal, highlighting that a cruise vessel has been permitted in the “Bhoj wetland” by the Madhya Pradesh government.

The wetland is also a Ramsar site with international importance and has two lakes — Upper lake, also called Bhojtal (Bada Talaab) and Lower Lake or Chhota Talaab.

Spread over about 31 km, the Upper Lake is an important source of drinking  water for the city. About 12 lakh people of Bhopal are dependent on this water body.

Upper Lake also has a great importance when it comes to local climate, vegetation, ground water depletion and ground water contamination of the surrounding area.

It has more than 15 kinds of fishes and several vulnerable species including turtles, amphibians and aquatic invertebrates.

More than 2,500 migratory birds from across the world used to come regularly to this wetland for breeding and dispersal of seeds, leading to maintenance of biodiversity along their routes.

The tribunal said no permanent construction will be allowed within the “Zone of Influence” of water bodies/wetlands and if any permanent construction has been raised, it be demolished.

Dr Subhash C Pandey, an environmentalist, had alleged serious damage and deterioration at the “Bhoj Wetland” and other water bodies due to operation of motorised boats and cruise boats.
He also said small cruise vessels with passengers act as floating colonies that pollute water bodies with sewage, waste water and other contaminants. A mid-sized cruise vessel can consume 150 tonnes of fuel each day and dump toxic waste in water.

In the Bhopal Master Plan, 2005, it was said that no recreational activities should be permitted in the water of Upper Lake since it is fundamentally used for drinking. Recreational activities may adversely affect the quality of water.

Even so, the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board has started organising cruises in rivers, lakes and water bodies, which mainly comprise river Narmada and its tributaries.

India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor Project Will Benefit Russia: Putin

India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor Project Will Benefit Russia: Putin

Putin said that the IMEC would help his country develop logistics. (FILE)

Moscow:

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday said he sees nothing in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) that can hinder Russia and that the project according to him benefits Russia, TASS reported.

The United States jumped into the “last car” by agreeing with the European Union, Saudi Arabia and India on the creation of a new economic corridor but the project itself is for the benefit of Russia, Putin said while speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) as cited by the Russian news agency TASS.

The Russian President said that the IMEC would help his country develop logistics and added that the project had been under discussion for several years.

His remarks came after India, the US, UAE, Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Italy and the European Union on Saturday on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in New Delhi signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.

Speaking at the 8th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in the Russian port town of Vladivostok, Putin said, “I believe that this will only benefit us. I believe that this will only help us develop logistics. Firstly, this project has been discussed for a long time, for several years.”

“True, the Americans jumped on this train at the last moment. But for them, I don’t see much point in being in this project. Only, perhaps, from the point of view of business interest. Meanwhile, the additional movement of goods along this corridor is, in fact, an addition to our North-South project. We have nothing here we see something that could somehow hinder us,” he added

Putin was referring to the International North-South Transport Corridor which seeks to link Russia to India’s western ports in the Arabian Sea via Iran.

Meanwhile speaking at the EEF Forum, Putin also said that the US prosecution of former President Donald Trump, who is seeking re-election, showcases the “rottenness” of the American system and constitutes an unfair political campaign, Russia-based TASS reported.

Addressing the plenary meeting of the Eastern Economic Forum, Putin said, “For us, what is happening [in the United States], in today’s conditions, in my opinion, is good,” Putin said.

Putin said “It shows the rottenness of the American political system, which cannot pretend to teach others about democracy,” TASS reported.

Putin said that everything that is happening with former US President Donald Trump is “persecution of his political reasons, that’s what it is.”

Putin said, “Everything that is happening with Trump is persecution of his political rival for political reasons, that’s what it is. And this is being done in front of the public of the United States and the whole world. They simply exposed their internal problems,” according to TASS report.

“In this sense, if they are trying to fight us in some way, it’s good, because it shows who is fighting us. It shows, as they said back in Soviet times, “the bestial appearance of American imperialism, the bestial grin,” he added, according to TASS.

Putin said that he believes that the elections in the US in 2024 will not impact Washington’s attitude towards Russia. He said that the US pressurises its allies and partners. He said that the US has no friends and has only its interests.

While speaking about the US policy at the plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum, “They crush their allies, their partners, they have no friends, they only have interests. This is a continuation of the well-known British formula.”

Earlier in August, a federal judge ruled that the federal criminal trial of former US President Donald Trump on charges he sought to subvert the result of the 2020 presidential election will begin on March 4, 2024, CNN reported.

Trump will go to trial on March 4, 2024, on charges alleging he worked to overturn the 2020 presidential election, federal Judge Tanya Chutkan announced. The set date for trial comes just a day before Tuesday, when voters in over a dozen states, including California and Texas will go to the polls.
