Wholesale Inflation Stays In Negative For Fifth Month At -0.52% In August

Wholesale Inflation Stays In Negative For Fifth Month At -0.52% In August

Inflation in food articles remained in double digit at 10.60 per cent in August.

New Delhi:

Wholesale price-based inflation remained in the negative territory for the fifth straight month in August at (-)0.52 per cent, but prices of food articles and fuel showed an uptick.

The wholesale price index (WPI) based inflation rate has been in the negative since April and was (-)1.36 per cent in July. In August last year it was 12.48 per cent.

Inflation in food articles remained in double digit at 10.60 per cent in August, lower than 14.25 per cent in July.

“The negative rate of inflation in August 2023 is primarily due to fall in prices of mineral oils, basic metals, chemical & chemical products, textiles and food products as compared to the corresponding month of previous year,” the commerce and industry ministry said on Thursday.

Fuel and power basket inflation was at (-)6.03 per cent in August, against (-) 12.79 per cent in July.

In manufactured products, inflation rate was (-)2.37 per cent, as against (-)2.51 per cent in July.

The RBI last month kept key interest rate unchanged at 6.5 per cent for the third straight meeting but signalled tighter policy if food prices drive inflation higher.

The central bank takes into account retail or consumer price index based inflation for formulating monetary policy. Retail inflation data for August came in at 6.83 per cent in August, lower than 7.44 per cent in July.

"Could Have Issued Warnings": UN Says Libya Flood Deaths Were Avoidable

'Could Have Issued Warnings': UN Says Libya Flood Deaths Were Avoidable

“The flooding events came and there was no evacuation taking place,” said UN.

Geneva, Switzerland:

The United Nations said Thursday that most of the thousands of deaths in Libya’s flood disaster could have been averted if early warning and emergency management systems had functioned properly.

With better functioning coordination in the crisis-wracked country, “they could have issued the warnings and the emergency management forces would have been able to carry out the evacuation of the people, and we could have avoided most of the human casualties,” Petteri Taalas, head of the UN’s World Meteorological Organization, told reporters in Geneva.

His comments came after a tsunami-sized flash flood hit eastern Libya at the weekend, killing at least 4,000 people, with thousands more missing and feared dead.

The enormous surge of water burst two upstream river dams and reduced the city of Derna to an apocalyptic wasteland where entire city blocks and untold numbers of people were washed into the Mediterranean Sea.

Taalas said lacking weather forecasting and dissemination and action on early warnings was a large contributor to the size of the disaster.

The years-long internal conflict wracking the country meant its meteorological “observing network has been very much destroyed, the IT systems have been destroyed”, he said.

“The flooding events came and there was no evacuation taking place, because there was not the proper early warning systems in place.”

If evacuations had taken place, the human toll would have been far lower, he said.

“Of course we cannot fully avoid economic losses, but we could have also minimised those losses by having proper services in place,” he said.

Libya’s National Meteorological Centre (NMC) did issue early warnings for the extreme weather coming 72 hours in advance and had notified governmental authorities by email, urging them to take preventative measures.

But WMO said it was “not clear whether (the warnings) were effectively disseminated”.

It said that while there had once been close cooperation between meteorological services and disaster management throughout Libya, this was no longer the case.

The Chandrayaan-3 lander is currently near the Moon’s South Pole since its successful soft landing last month.

India took a giant leap as the Chandrayaan-3 lander module successfully landed on the moon’s South Pole, making it the first country to have achieved the historic feat.

India became the fourth country – after the US, China, and Russia – to have successfully landed on the moon’s surface.

In days after landing, the Vikram lander and the Pragyan rover performed different sets of tasks on the lunar surface, including finding the presence of sulphur and other minor elements, recording relative temperature, and listening to movements around it.

The stated objectives of Chandrayaan-3, India’s third lunar mission was safe and soft landing, rover roving on the moon’s surface, and in-situ scientific experiments.

Flesh-Eating Bacteria From Raw Oysters Linked To Man's Death In US

Flesh-Eating Bacteria From Raw Oysters Linked To Man's Death In US

The man fell ill after consuming raw oysters at a restaurant.

A young man in Texas died after eating raw oysters that had dangerous bacteria in them. The Galveston County Local Health Authority said that the man, who was in his thirties, consumed several raw oysters while dining at a restaurant on Tuesday, August 29. The man’s identity has not been revealed, but health officials say he had underlying health conditions that made him more likely to get sick from the bacteria.

Health authorities have linked his death to a bacteria called Vibrio vulnificus, which is commonly found in warm coastal waters and can infect individuals when they ingest raw or undercooked shellfish, particularly oysters. Furthermore, infection can also occur through contact with an open wound. Vibrio vulnificus infections are rare, but they can be deadly. People with weakened immune systems, liver disease, or diabetes are at the highest risk.

According to Dr Philip Keiser from local health department, the man was admitted to the hospital on September 1 and died three days later.

“He had problems with his liver. He also had some other problems, and he had to take some medication that suppressed his immune system,” Doctor said.

“It just so happens that the conditions that he had really predisposed him to an overwhelming infection with Vibrio vulnificus.”

His death comes just days after the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a warning about recent reports of fatal Vibrio vulnificus infections, including wound and foodborne infections.

Officials issued a warning regarding swimming in the unusually warm Gulf of Mexico and the consumption of raw shellfish due to the high temperatures that promote the proliferation of Vibrio vulnificus.

US military resumes drone flights out of Niger bases after coup

A top US military commander says Washington has resumed flying drones and other aircraft out of Niger air bases, more than a month after a coup temporarily halted all those activities in the West African country.

General James Hecker, Air Force commander for Europe and Africa, made the remarks at the annual Air and Space Forces Association convention at National Harbor, Maryland, on Wednesday.

“For a while, we weren’t doing any missions on the bases, they pretty much closed down the airfields,” Hecker said. “Through the diplomatic process, we are now doing, I wouldn’t say 100 percent of the missions that we were doing before, but we’re doing a large amount of missions that we’re doing before.”

He went on to say that the US is flying both manned and unmanned missions in Niger, adding that some of those intelligence and surveillance flights resumed “within the last couple of weeks” due to Washington’s negotiations with the junta.

Pentagon’s chief spokesman General Pat Ryder also confirmed in a statement that the US was flying missions in Niger again but said they were confined to protecting American forces.

As of November 2019, the Americans operate Air Base 201, where about 1,100 soldiers are stationed and which is used for MQ-9 Reapers and manned aircraft.

After the successful July coup, the new authorities banned American drones from flying in Niger’s airspace and US forces deployed in the country have been confined inside their military bases.

Last week, the Pentagon said some military personnel and assets had been moved from the air base near the capital Niamey to another base in Agadez.

The US has made Niger its main regional outpost for wide-ranging patrols by armed drones and other counter-terror operations.

The official reason for the presence of US forces is the alleged fight against extremist rebels, although many analysts argue that the main motive is to control the African country’s massive energy resources as well as use them for the strategic surveillance of West Africa.

The landlocked West African country is rich in Uranium but remains deeply poor.

Why Ben Stokes Apologised To Jason Roy After Record-Breaking 182

Following his side’s win and record-breaking knock of 182 against New Zealand in the third ODI, England all-rounder Ben Stokes jokingly “apologised” to teammate Jason Roy for surpassing his highest individual score for England. Stokes surpassed Jason Roy’s 180 made against Australia at Melbourne in 2018 to guide England to register a mammoth 368 against the Kiwis in the third ODI of the four-match series at The Oval on Wednesday. A record-breaking knock by Ben Stokes coupled with solid performances by bowlers guided an all-round England to a 181-run win over New Zealand.

“Really pleased. Apologise to Jason (Jason Roy – for breaking his record of highest individual score for England). We spoke about putting New Zealand under pressure and getting to a good start and even after losing those early wickets, we wanted to be positive. Once we got going, we did not want them (bowlers) to settle. As experienced players, we need to guide the younger players.

“He (Malan) is a very consistent player, he is a very quality player, rotates the strike very well as well and missed out on the milestone after getting a strangle down leg. I am feeling much better (in terms of fitness), Test matches are a bit longer but ODIs surely are not that demanding,” said Stokes in a post-match presentation.

Coming to the match, England was put to bat first by the Kiwis and were struggling at 13/2 when Stokes came out. He had a 199-run partnership for the third wicket with Dawid Malan (96 in 95 balls, 12 fours and a six) and a 78-run stand for the fourth wicket with skipper Jos Buttler (38 in 24 balls, six fours and a six), which took England to 368 in 48.1 overs despite a lower-order collapse.

Trent Boult (5/51) and Ben Lister (3/69) were the pick of the bowlers for the Kiwis.

In the chase of 339, Kiwis were rocked by the pace trio of Chris Woakes, Reece Topley and Sam Curran and were struggling at 70/5. Glenn Phillips (72 in 76 balls, with five fours and two sixes) and Rachin Ravindra (28 in 22 balls, five fours) tried fighting back but NZ was bundled out for 187 in just 39 overs.

Woakes (3/31) and Livingstone (3/16) were the pick of the bowlers for NZ. Topley took two, Curran and Moeen Ali got one each.

Stokes took home the ‘Player of the Match’ award. England is leading the series 2-1 with a match to go.

Fitch Retains India's Growth Forecast For Current Fiscal At 6.3%

Fitch Retains India's Growth Forecast For Current Fiscal At 6.3%

New Delhi:

Fitch Ratings on Thursday retained India’s growth forecast for the current fiscal at 6.3 per cent saying the Indian economy continues to show resilience despite tighter monetary policy and weakness in exports, but upped year-end inflation projection on El Nino threat.

The Indian economy grew 7.8 per cent in the April-June quarter of current fiscal on strong services sector activity and robust demand.

“The Indian economy continues to show resilience despite tighter monetary policy and weakness in exports, with growth outpacing other countries in the region,” Fitch said, while projecting 6.3 per cent growth for current fiscal, and 6.5 per cent for next fiscal.

In its September update of the Global Economic Outlook Fitch, however, said that high-frequency indicators suggest that the pace of growth in the July-September quarter is likely to moderate.

Growth in the July-September quarter is likely to moderate as exports continue to weaken, credit growth flatlines and the Reserve Bank of India’s latest bimonthly consumer confidence survey shows consumers becoming a little more pessimistic on income and employment prospects, Fitch said.

On the price front, it said that the temporary increases in inflation, in particular rising food inflation, in coming months could curb households’ discretionary spending power.

“The inflation impact on consumers may be temporary but other more fundamental factors are weighing on the economy.

“India will not be immune to the global economic slowdown and the domestic economy will be affected by the lagged impact of the RBI’s 250bps of hikes in the past year, while a poor monsoon season could complicate the RBI’s control of inflation,” Fitch said.

Annual headline inflation was 6.8 per cent in August after 7.4 per cent in July and 4.9 per cent in June.

“The increase in inflation in recent months has been driven largely by a sharp increase in the price of tomatoes and other food products,” Fitch said.

Notwithstanding the risk of higher food prices, Fitch maintained its RBI’s benchmark interest rate forecast at 6.5 per cent for the end of this calendar year.

The government has reacted by importing greater quantities of food (especially tomatoes), temporarily scrapping the import duty on wheat and restricting sugar exports, it said.

The RBI expects annual CPI inflation to moderate in coming months given the short-term nature of vegetable price shocks.

“Nevertheless, the threat of El Niño means that inflation could exceed our forecasts, although the impact on consumers and the economy is likely to be temporary,” Fitch said, adding it expects 2023-end retail or CPI inflation at 5.5 per cent, higher than our previous forecast of 5 per cent.

Ahead Of Summit, Vladimir Putin Offers Kim Jong Un A Ride In His Limousine

Ahead Of Summit, Vladimir Putin Offers Kim Jong Un A Ride In His Limousine

The two leaders sat in Putin’s presidential Aurus limousine

Moscow:

Russian President Vladimir Putin invited North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to check out his Russian-made limousine on Wednesday ahead of their summit, ceding the spacious back seat to his guest.

Putin and Kim on Wednesday inspected the space launch facilities of the modern Vostochny Cosmodrome in the Russian Far East ahead of their summit, according to state television footage.

As they strolled to the main complex engaged in casual conversation, they came to Putin’s presidential Aurus limousine parked in the driveway, and the Russian president gestured to the vehicle as Kim stood seemingly curious.

Putin invited Kim to climb into the back seat and walked around to slide in next to the North Korean leader, who sat beaming.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

North Korea’s KCNA news agency said on Thursday “Putin showed his private car to Kim Jong Un before having a warm talk”.

The Aurus Senat limousine was developed by the Russian state automotive institute known by its acronym NAMI.

Putin drove in the Aurus for the first time at his fourth inauguration in 2018, ditching his old stretch Mercedes in a patriotic message of self sufficiency.

Kim drove to the space station on Wednesday in his personal Maybach limousine, brought onboard the special train he travelled in from Pyongyang with a large entourage.

Kim is believed to be an automobile enthusiast, having been seen in several luxury cars, including different Mercedes models, a Lexus sports utility vehicle and a Rolls-Royce Phantom.

Those vehicles fall under luxury goods that U.N. member countries are banned from exporting to North Korea and are believed to have been smuggled in.

German manufacturer Daimler, which makes the Maybach, has said it had no idea how the vehicle and other Mercedes cars have been taken into the North and that it had no formal dealings with Pyongyang.

North Korea has a feeble auto industry with a handful of home-grown brands that build sedans and passenger buses. The most prominent is Pyeonghwa Motors, founded as a joint venture with investment from the South Korean company of the same name.

In 2018, then U.S. President Donald Trump allowed Kim a peek inside the U.S. presidential limousine known as “The Beast” during a break in their first summit in Singapore.

That time Kim did not get to climb in.
