Abu Dhabi: Ireland after beating Afghanistan by six wickets in the only Test on Saturday became the sixth-fastest team to clinch their inaugural Test victory eclipsing the accomplishments of established Test-playing nations such as India, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and New Zealand.

Ireland’s route to this historic victory transpired quickly over just eight matches, spanning six years since their introduction into the red-ball format in 2018. This was despite their relative inexperience in Test cricket. Australia’s first Test victory, against bitter rivals England, came in 1877 in their inaugural match, setting the standard for quick success. England and Pakistan won their second Test match, however India had to go through a longer process until they won their first Test match against England in their 25th encounter.

The fact that South Africa won their first Test match after playing in 12 matches and New Zealand achieved their first victory in the 45th match highlights the different paths that cricketing nations have taken to succeed in the esteemed format. Facing a modest target of 111 runs for victory, Ireland stumbled early, finding themselves at a precarious 13 for 3 in their fourth innings.

However, led by captain Andy Balbirnie’s unbeaten 58, supported by Lorcan Tucker’s 27 not out, they weathered the storm and overcame the Afghan challenge, sparking tears of joy among the traveling Irish fans as Tucker struck the historic winning run. While Balbirnie’s masterful innings guided Ireland to victory on a challenging surface, it was their pace bowling trio of Barry McCarthy (3-48), Mark Adair (3-56), and Craig Young (3-24) that set the stage for the triumph.

Combining forces, they dismantled the Afghan batting lineup, sharing nine crucial wickets in the third innings, restricting Afghanistan to a modest total of 218. Adair’s pivotal breakthroughs, McCarthy’s precision, and Young’s incisive bowling laid the foundation for Ireland’s success, limiting Afghanistan’s lead to just 110 runs. Despite a stubborn lower-order resistance, Ireland’s disciplined bowling ensured they were tasked with a manageable target, one they pursued with determination and focus.

Bundesliga: Freiburg’s late equalizer stalls Bayern Munich 2-2 draw

Berlin: Bayern Munich suffered another setback in the Bundesliga title race as Lucas Holer’s late equalizer helped Freiburg snatch a 2-2 stalemate in the 24th round on Friday.

Freiburg started brightly on home soil and pressed Bayern into defense, as goalkeeper Manuel Neuer denied Roland Sallai twice in quick succession in the opening stages.

Freiburg broke the deadlock in the 12th minute when Christian Gunter drilled home Nicolas Hofler’s lay-up from 18 meters into the top right corner.

The German giants lacked in ideas but managed to level the scores after Mathys Tel collected a loose ball following a corner, before curling the ball into the far post corner with 35 minutes played.

After the restart, Bayern gained a foothold into the match as Harry Kane missed the target two minutes into the second half, with both of the England striker’s long-range efforts no challenge for Freiburg keeper Noah Atubolu.

Thomas Tuchel’s men turned the tides in the 75th minute when Jamal Musiala danced through Freiburg’s penalty area before slotting past Atubolu into the far post bottom corner.

Freiburg stunned Bayern with the equalizer in the closing stages as a throw-in from substitute Michael Gregoritsch found Holer, who tapped home from inside the box.

Second-placed Bayern reduced the arrears to leaders Leverkusen to seven points for the moment, while Freiburg stayed on ninth position.

“We played an undisciplined first half, but we showed a great reaction after falling behind. After the break we dominated but gave away our narrow lead because of a moment of distraction,” commented Tuchel.

“The boys did a great job. They played with a lot of passion and will. We deserved a draw,” said Freiburg coach Christian Streich.

BCCI to conduct women’s red-ball tournament from March: Reports

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has devised a plan to introduce women’s red-ball cricket within the country by organising a multi-day competition, say reports.

The tournament is set to take place soon after the conclusion of the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL), which will conclude on March 17.

It kickstarts on March 29 in Pune and will feature teams representing six zones – East, West, North, South, Central, and NorthEast – competing in a series of five matches, a Cricbuzz report said.

The tournament will commence with two quarterfinals set to take place simultaneously on March 29, 30, and 31. Following this stage, the championship will advance to two semifinals, expected to be held concurrently on April 5, 6, and 7. The tournament’s grand final is scheduled for April 9, 10, and 11. However wo teams directly seeded in the semifinals remained unknown at the time, the report added.

This three-day spectacle will act as a crucial evaluation to ascertain the BCCI’s ability to effectively motivate players to partake in domestic events, mirroring the board’s endeavours to ensure that male players accord the same significance to domestic competitions such as the Ranji Trophy as they do to the IPL and international cricket.
