ISL: Need to take our chances in set-pieces, says Hyderabad FC head coach

Hyderabad: Hyderabad FC’s approach with long throws to the penalty box in the last game against Punjab FC was a clear tactic for HFC head coach Thangboi Singto and relying to take advantage of the set-pieces when they lock horns against NorthEast United FC in the Indian Super League clash in GMC Balayogi Stadium in Hyderabad on Monday.

The Highlanders under head coach Juan Pedro Benali is certainly a team to watch in the league, with players such as Tomi Juric, Nestor Albiach, Michael Zabaco, Jithin MS, Parthib Gogoi making an impact on the club’s performance. HFC’s defence have to be on their toes against the visitors, especially with the incoming striker Juric, the team looks very threatening in offensive transitions as the number 9 has five goals in four games so far.

“NEUFC are a very organised team and counters at the right time, we don’t have a proven striker at our helm but our other offensive players need to take more responsibility to convert the chances and make sure we take full advantage of our set-piece chances,” Singto said.

The game at the Gachibowli will see the return of goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh, who until the game against East Bengal on February 17 was playing for the Nizams but is now part of NorthEast United having signed a long-term contract. “It was very strange of him to leave the club outside of the transfer window. I no longer want to talk about the players who have left and moving forward I want players at the club who are committed to playing for Hyderabad,” Singto asserted.

Hyderabad have the upper hand in the overall head-to-head stats winning on six occasions and losing just once in nine games played so far but it is the visitors who are in the eighth position in the league standings will start as the favourites against the bottom-placed Nizams, who still eyeing their first win of the season.

Singto wants Stimac to attend ISL matches

NorthEast United head coach Juan Pedro Benali last month lashed out to the Indian men’s senior team head coach Igor Stimac’s comment about the lack of quality players in the youth system and advised the Croat to attend club matches and to take young players to the national team.

After the disappointing show in the AFC Asian Cup in Qatar, the Indian team now prepares for the second round of fixtures of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Afghanistan on March 21 and 26.

The Indian football team head coach not coming to watch club games is no secret and has not gone well with the football fans. Hyderabad FC who are fielding young Indian players since the start of the second leg of the Indian Super League have some exciting talents, the team is still winless but certainly, these young players have the spark which is evident in the pitch. HFC head coach Thangboi Singto stated he would love to see Stimac in the stands, “The best way to identify talents is to watch the games live and the national team coach should visit the stadiums and watch the ISL games.”

England’s failure to win their last three Test series is due to their batting, says Michael Vaughan

With India taking an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series via a five-wicket win in Ranchi, it marked England’s first series loss under the captain-coach duo of Stokes and Brendon McCullum.

England’s failure to win their last three Test series is due to their batting, says Michael Vaughan

New Delhi: With England losing the ongoing Test series to India, former captain Michael Vaughan believes the Ben Stokes-led side haven’t been able to win their last three series in the format due to the failure of their batting department.

With India taking an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series via a five-wicket win in Ranchi, it marked England’s first series loss under the captain-coach duo of Stokes and Brendon McCullum.

Before the tour to India, England had drawn 2-2 with Australia at home and 1-1 with New Zealand in their backyard.

“It’s a huge week for several of England’s batsmen. When we think of this England team, we think of their wonderfully dynamic batting. But when you look at why they haven’t won any of their last three series, it’s down to the batting.’

“There never seems to be much scrutiny or noise around England’s batsmen. Even last week I chuckled. They lost in Ranchi in large part because they didn’t bat well enough, but there was lots of finger-pointing at Ollie Robinson, a bowler who scored an important half-century!

“He looked well short of a gallop with the ball and dropped a catch, but I thought it was ironic ‘batsmen v bowlers’ stuff,” wrote Vaughan in his column for The Telegraph. He also foresees England’s batting order may see a change after the Dharamshala Test is played from March 7-11.

“The whole batting lineup has known week in, week out on this tour that it will be playing the next game. That is about to change because after this tour Harry Brook will be back.”

“He has to bat at No. 5 because he should be the bedrock of their batting with Joe Root. Does that mean England’s statement moment is coming? Consistency of selection is such a fine balance in team sports.”

“Making people comfortable is right, and England have generally batted well over the last two years. There comes a point, though, where when it’s your batting that is costing you the biggest series you can’t keep sending the same guys out there every week.”

Vaughan then touched upon the cases of wicketkeeper-batters Jonny Bairstow, set to play his 100th Test match, and Ben Foakes, who has been a part of some gritty partnerships in the series, but both of them have failed to get a big individual total in India.

‘Jonny Bairstow plays his 100th Test in Dharamsala and I am delighted about that. It’s a great triumph of resilience and, even in terms of sentiment, I believe that if you get to 99 caps you deserve the moment of your 100th. However, you can’t escape that he could miss out on his 101st. He hasn’t played well enough across the 10 Tests he’s been back in the side, especially in India.”

“I also look at the keeper, Ben Foakes. He has kept magnificently in India, but I get the sense that he is not in the inner circle with this setup and that his batting still doesn’t suit them. The last Test was a good example: he is great in partnership with a batsman, but struggles kicking on with the tail.”

“Once again, his batting might not be enough however good his keeping is. England could give the gloves back to Bairstow at No. 7, where his batting is more dangerous, or they could look elsewhere. They’ve got a strong crop of young keeper-batsmen coming through, like (the other) Ollie Robinson, Jamie Smith and James Rew.

Overall, as a batting unit England have seemed in need of a reminder that Test cricket is a two-innings game. They have consistently been batting well in one, then screwing up the other.

“In times gone by, being ahead on first innings just about won you the game, but teams fear chasing less now and can turn games around more easily. Ultimately, the game is about winning and England are struggling to do that against the very best sides,” he said.

Seoul: Cristiano Ronaldo returns from suspension on Monday to try and save Al-Nassr’s season and guide the Saudi Arabian team closer to a first ever Asian Champions League title.

Last Thursday, the 39 year-old was banned for one game after making an alleged offensive gesture during a Saudi Arabian league match four days earlier.

At the end of a 3-2 win over Al-Shabab, video footage appeared to show Ronaldo cupping his ear and repeatedly thrusting his hand forward near his pelvis, in a gesture that seemed to be aimed at Al-Shabab fans.

The punishment meant that Ronaldo watched frustrated from the sidelines during Thursday’s domestic league game as Al-Nassr took the lead four times but ended with a 4-4 draw at home to bottom team Al-Hazm.

The result leaves the club in second in the Saudi Pro League and nine points behind leader Al-Hilal.

“Ronaldo strengthens the team and ensures that the opponent respects you more but his absence had nothing to do with the result,” said Al-Nassr coach Luis Castro.

“The fact is that we are conceding too many goals and the problem is not organizational but due to individual mistakes.” “The league result will not affect our game in the Asian Champions League as we will be fully focused on that.” The continental competition offers Al-Nassr the best chance of silverware this season and the team makes the short trip to take on Al-Ain of the United Arab Emirates, winner in 2003, in the first leg of the quarterfinal.

On Tuesday, there is an all-Saudi Arabia clash as Al-Hilal, with a record four continental titles, takes on Al-Ittihad, champion in 2004 and 2005.

Neymar is still missing for Al-Hilal, currently top of the Saudi Arabia league, while Al-Ittihad is waiting to see if star striker Karim Benzema recovers from a muscle injury.

The two teams met in the league on Friday. Former Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante put Ittihad ahead but Al-Hilal came back to win 3-1 to record a 25th straight win in all competitions.

“The players are playing with great confidence,” said Al-Hilal coach Jorge Jesus. “This is a good thing because we are facing important matches in a short period, starting with the Asian Champions League and a tough game against Al-Ittihad and we will have to be at our best.” Al-Ittihad, the defending Saudi Arabian champion is now in fifth in the league and out of the domestic title race.

“We are moving in the right direction and the Asian Champions League quarterfinal is now the most important game of the season for us,” said Ittihad defender Ahmed Hegazy. “We know that it will be tough against Al-Hilal but this is a different game and we are focused on this.” In the eastern zone, —the tournament is split into two geographic halves until the final — there is an all-South Korean clash as Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors takes on Ulsan HD. Both teams have won two titles each.

In the remaining fixture, Yokohama F. Marinos of Japan meets China’s Shandong Taishan on Wednesday.

The second legs are played the following week.

Prime Volleyball League: Calicut Heroes beat Hyderabad Black Hawks in straight sets

Hyderabad: Calicut Heroes returned to winning ways in a dominant fashion, defeating the Hyderabad Black Hawks 15-13, 18-16, 16-14 in the third season of the Prime Volleyball League at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Chennai on Saturday.

Chirag Yadav was named the player of the match. Sahil Kumar began well, justifying his selection in the starting line-up for Hyderabad. Jerome Vinith’s fiery attacks helped Calicut gain momentum. Mohan Ukkrapandian’s passing allowed Vikas Maan to attack from the middle, but strong blocks from Stefan Kovacevic, Sahil, and Prince kept things close. But Chirag Yadav’s involvement in attacking moves pushed Calicut ahead.

As Stefan began swinging from the middle to push Hyderabad, Calicut’s Vikas showed his swings from the region to help his side. Sahil’s threat from Zone 4 and a few unforced errors from Calicut allowed Hyderabad to make way back into the contest. But Danial Moatazedi made crucial blocks and Chirag’s incessant attacks gave Calicut control of the topsy-turvy battle.

Despite being on the back foot, Hyderabad’s defensive game remained strong, keeping them in the hunt. Sahil’s swings proved hard for Calicut’s two-man block to tackle. Hemanth’s consistent pipe attacks helped Hyderabad and the momentum shifted. But two massive blocks from Ukkra and Chirag helped Calicut find their way back and win the game in straight sets.

New Delhi Dale Steyn, the legendary South African fast bowler, has requested a break from his role as the bowling coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, even as the franchise may announce Pat Cummins as the captain for the upcoming season of the tournament starting on March 22.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, Steyn is said to have asked the franchise about a break from the coaching role he has at SRH for this year.It added that the franchise is now searching for a new bowling coach and the announcement in this regard could be made soon.

Apart from playing 93 Tests, 125 ODIs, and 47 T20Is in a glittering international career for South Africa, Steyn had played for the now-defunct Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad. and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL.

In 2022, Steyn joined the SRH franchise in a bowling coach role and has been credited with playing a huge role in the development of speedster Umran Malik, who went on to earn an India cap in T20Is and ODIs, and recently got a fast-bowling contract from the BCCI.

The report also said Steyn is expected to return to the franchise next season, pending all necessary arrangements and requirements.

After finishing at the bottom of the points table last year, SRH got a new head coach in former New Zealand left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori, currently an assistant coach with the Australian team.

Meanwhile, talking about the SRH captaincy for IPL 2024, the franchise is expected to announce Cummins as their new captain after acquiring him for INR 20.5 crore in the auction in Dubai last year. Cummins had won the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) and Men’s ODI World Cup as captain of Australia.

SRH were captained by Aiden Markram in the previous two seasons but didn’t gain any significant success. Markram, though, successfully led SunRisers Eastern Cape, a sister team of the SRH franchise to the trophy in the first two seasons of the SA20.

Sunrisers Hyderabad, the IPL 2016 winners, will open their 2024 campaign on March 23 against two-time winner Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, followed by their first home match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on March 27 against five-time champions Mumbai Indians

New Delhi: A few days ago, Shreyas Iyer along with Ishan Kishan had been omitted from the 2023/24 BCCI Central Contracts List, with the board saying that the duo were not recommended to be amongst the 30 players to get the annual retainership.

Regarding Iyer, who pulled out of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy quarterfinal against Baroda due to a back issue, a report in Revsportz says BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar was furious when he came to know about the right-handed batter being present at the Academy of his IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, who he captains in the tournament.

As the chief selector, Agarkar is in charge of finalising the central contracts and Iyer was dropped from the central contracts list.

Currently, Iyer is playing for Mumbai in their Ranji Trophy semifinal against Tamil Nadu at the BKC Ground in Mumbai.

Iyer was one of the key performers in India’s runners-up finish in the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup last year, making 530 runs in 11 matches, including a century in the semifinal against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium.

He had been in a race against time to be fit for the tournament due to a back injury needing surgery but got fit enough to play in the mega event.

But Iyer hadn’t left a mark in the first two Tests against England, making scores of 35 and 13 in Hyderabad, followed by 27 and 29 in Visakhapatnam.

He was then left out of India’s squad for the last three Tests against England. In his last seven Test matches, Iyer has amassed only 187 runs at an average of 17, with a top score of just 35.
