Elon Musk set to visit India, eager to meet PM Modi

New Delhi: Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has confirmed his visit to India, saying that he is looking forward to meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the country.

“Looking forward to meeting with Prime Minister @NarendraModi in India,” Musk confirmed on Wednesday in a post on X.

As per media reports, the tech billionaire is slated to meet PM Modi “in the week of April 22 in New Delhi”.

Musk, accompanied by other top Tesla executives, is likely to make an announcement about his investment plans and setting up of a potential $2-3 billion manufacturing plant in the country.

According to SpaceX CEO, the entry of Tesla in India, as the company scouts for factory land, will be a “natural progression”.

“All vehicles will go electric and it is just a matter of time,” Musk said.

As per reports, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu are on top of Tesla’s agenda to start EV manufacturing and export the vehicles as well.

During his visit to the US last year, PM Modi had invited the tech billionaire to explore opportunities in the country for investments in the e-mobility sector.

Property Tycoon Faces Death Penalty Over "Biggest Fraud" In Vietnam

The Billionaire Facing Death Penalty In Vietnam's 'Biggest Fraud'

Truong My Lan has denied the charges and blamed subordinates.

Hanoi, Vietnam:

A top Vietnamese property tycoon could face the death penalty when she and dozens of other co-accused face verdicts on Thursday in one of the country’s biggest fraud cases over the embezzlement of $12.5 billion.

Truong My Lan, chair of major developer Van Thinh Phat, is accused of swindling the cash from Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB) over a decade.

She and 85 others face verdicts and sentencing in southern business hub Ho Chi Minh City following a five-week trial. The list of co-accused includes former central bankers, ex-government officials and previous SCB executives.

The charges they face include bribery, abuse of power, appropriation and violations of banking law.

Lan has denied the charges and blamed subordinates.

Prosecutors have called for Lan to face the death sentence, an unusually severe punishment in such a case.

She and the 85 others were arrested as part of a national corruption crackdown that has swept up many officials and members of Vietnam’s business elite in recent years.

Lan appeared to say in final remarks to the court last week that she had thoughts of suicide.

“In my desperation, I thought of death,” she said, according to state media.

“I am so angry that I was stupid enough to get involved in this very fierce business environment — the banking sector — which I have little knowledge of.”

Heavy police presence

Hundreds of people began to stage protests in the capital Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, a relatively rare occurrence in the one-party communist state, after Lan’s arrest in October 2022.

There was a heavy police presence outside the State Bank of Vietnam in Hanoi on Wednesday, a site of previous demonstrations.

Police have identified around 42,000 victims of the scandal, which has shocked the Southeast Asian country.

Lan, who is married to a wealthy Hong Kong businessman also on trial, is accused of setting up fake loan applications to withdraw money from SCB, in which she owned a 90 percent stake.

Police say those caught up in the scam are all SCB bondholders who cannot withdraw their money and have not received interest or principal payments since Lan’s arrest.

The value of Lan’s alleged asset appropriation, which occurred between 2012 and 2022, was equivalent to around three percent of Vietnam’s GDP in 2022.

Prosecutors said during the trial they had seized more than 1,000 properties belonging to Lan.

Authorities have also said $5.2 million allegedly given by Lan and some SCB bankers to state officials to conceal the bank’s violations and poor financial situation was the largest bribe recorded in Vietnam.

The woman who was offered the bribe — Do Thi Nhan, the former head of the State Bank of Vietnam’s inspection team — said during the trial the cash was handed to her in Styrofoam boxes by the former CEO of SCB, Vo Tan Van.

After realising they contained money, Nhan refused the boxes but Van declined to take them back, state media reported.

More than 4,400 people have been indicted during Vietnam’s corruption crackdown, across more than 1,700 graft cases, since 2021.

A top Vietnamese luxury property tycoon — Do Anh Dung, head of the Tan Hoang Minh group — was sentenced to eight years in prison last month after he was found guilty of cheating thousands of investors in a $355 million bond scam.

Hyderabad Police Bust Online IPL Betting Racket, Recover Rs 40 Lakh

The arrested persons organised online cricket betting through apps on the matches of the ongoing IPL.

Hyderabad:

The Cyberabad police have busted an online cricket betting racket with the arrest of four bookies.

The police also seized Rs 40 lakh from the possession of the accused persons, besides freezing five bank accounts worth Rs 3.57 lakh.

Acting on a reliable tip-off, the special operations team (SOT) of Madhapur and Miyapur police jointly nabbed the bookies from an apartment at Mathrusri Nagar under the limits of the Miyapur police station.

The arrested persons have been identified as Aaluru Trinadh, Manam Rajesh, Bolle Swamy, and Marpenna Ganapathi Rao, who organised online cricket betting through the Cricket Live Guru and Lucky Online apps on the matches of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL).

The police investigation revealed that a London-based person named Shakamuri Venkateshwar Rao alias Chinnu, a native of Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh, was organising online cricket betting. The four arrested persons, all from Andhra Pradesh, acted as bookies on his behalf.

G. Vineeth, the DCP of Madhapur Zone, has requested citizens to inform the police regarding bookies and punters organising online cricket betting by dialing 100 or through the WhatsApp number 9490617444.

Ben Affleck-Jennifer Garner's Child Comes Out As Transgender

Ben Affleck-Jennifer Garner's Child Comes Out As Transgender

The 15-year-old, who wore a black tuxedo and a buzz cut, introduced themselves to the gathering.

Hollywood star Ben Affleck and his ex-wife actor Jennifer Garner’s 15-year-old child has come out as transgender on Wednesday. At a memorial service for Ms Garner’s father, they announced their new name, Fin Affleck.

The 15-year-old, who wore a black tuxedo and a buzz cut, introduced themselves to the gathering. “Hello, my name is Fin Affleck,” they said, before reciting a verse from the Bible at the memorial service.

While Fin was spotted with the new haircut earlier this year, they came out publicly as trans and revealed their new name only on Wednesday.

Mr Affleck and Ms Garner split in 2015 and the actors share custody of their three children: Violet Anne, 19 and Fin Affleck, 15 and Samuel Garner, 12.

Both Mr Affleck and Ms Garner have been outspoken about keeping their children out of the limelight, with Mr Affleck also calling for law that mandates media outlets to blur children’s faces in published photos on the lines of a similar legislation in the UK. “You can say what you want about me. You can yell at me with a video camera and be TMZ. You can follow me around and take pictures all you want. I don’t care. That’s part of the deal. But it’s wrong and disgusting to follow children around and take their picture and sell it for money. It makes the kids less safe,” he told a news outlet in 2013.

Ms Garner shared the news of her father’s death on Instagram along with several photos of her family over the years. “My dad passed peacefully Saturday afternoon. We were with him, singing Amazing Grace as he left us (did we carry him across or scare him away- valid question.) While there is no tragedy in the death of an 85 year old man who lived a healthy, wonderful life, I know grief is unavoidable, waiting around unexpected corners,” she wrote.

The 51-year-old star said the post was intended to share her memories with her father and show her “appreciation for the kind and brilliant man, father, and grandfather he was, as well as the loving legacy he left behind.”

3 Injured In Shooting At Eid Celebration In US' Philadelphia: Cops

3 Injured In Shooting At Eid Celebration In US' Philadelphia: Cops

Around 30 gunshots rang out when more than 10,000 people were in the park celebrating Eid on Wednesday.

Philadelphia:

A shooting between rival groups left three people wounded at a celebration marking the end of Ramadan, police in the US city of Philadelphia said.

Police gave no indication that the event itself, a party marking Eid al-Fitr, which celebrates the end of the Muslim holy month, was targeted.

“We are very, very fortunate today that we did not have more individuals shot and anyone killed,” Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel told reporters.

In mid-afternoon as around 1,000 people were in the park celebrating the end to their month of fasting, around 30 gunshots rang out, Bethel said.

“What we do know is there appear to be two factions within the park, who are now exchanging gunfire,” Bethel said.

Three people were wounded, including an armed 15-year-old who was shot by police. He was hit in the arm and leg.

Five people were arrested including the teen, and five guns were recovered, police said.

“Eid should always be a time of joy for our Muslim neighbors. And I grieve for every member of the Philadelphia Muslim community whose celebration was shattered by gun violence today,” Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

North Korea's Kim Jong Un Says Now Is Time To Be Ready For War

North Korea's Kim Jong Un Says Now Is Time To Be Ready For War

Kim Jong Un gave field guidance on Wednesday at Kim Jong Il University of Military and Politics.

Seoul:

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said unstable geopolitical situations surrounding his country mean now is the time to be more prepared for war than ever, as he inspected the country’s main military university, KCNA news agency said on Thursday.

Kim gave field guidance on Wednesday at Kim Jong Il University of Military and Politics, named after his father who died in 2011, which KCNA said is the “highest seat of military education” in the country.

North Korea has stepped up weapons development in recent years under Kim and has forged closer military and political ties with Russia, allegedly aiding Moscow in its war with Ukraine in return for help with strategic military projects.

Affirming that if the enemy opts for military confrontation with the DPRK, the DPRK will deal a death-blow to the enemy without hesitation by mobilizing all means in its possession,” KCNA quoted Kim as telling the university staff and students.

DPRK is short for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the North’s official name.

“Outlining the complicated international situation … and the uncertain and unstable military and political situation around the DPRK, he said that now is the time to be more thoroughly prepared for a war than ever before,” KCNA said.

Earlier this month, Kim supervised the test launch of a new hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile using solid fuel, which analysts said would bolster the North’s ability to deploy missiles more effectively than liquid-fuel variants.

North Korea has accused the United States and South Korea of provoking military tensions by conducting what it called “war maneuvers” as the allies have conducted military drills with greater intensity and scale in recent months.

South Korea's Liberal Opposition Wins Landslide Parliamentary Vote

South Korea's Liberal Opposition Wins Landslide Parliamentary Vote

Main opposition Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung speaks to reporters after exit polls.

Seoul:

South Korea’s liberal opposition parties scored a landslide victory in a parliamentary election held on Wednesday, dealing a resounding blow to President Yoon Suk Yeol and his conservative party but likely falling just short of a super majority.

The Democratic Party (DP) was projected to take more than 170 of the 300 seats in the new legislature, data by the National Election Commission and network broadcasters showed with more than 99% of the votes counted as of 5:55 a.m. on Thursday (2055 GMT Wednesday).

A splinter liberal party considered allied with the DP was expected to take at least 10 seats, projections showed.

The bitterly fought race was seen by some analysts as a referendum on Yoon, whose popularity has suffered amid a cost-of-living crisis and a spate of political scandals.

His People Power Party (PPP) was projected to win just over 100 seats, meaning Yoon would avoid the super-majority of a two-third opposition control that could break presidential vetoes and pass constitutional amendments.

But nearing the end of the first two years of his five-year single term allowed by the constitution, Yoon was likely to slip into a lame duck status, some analysts said.

The National Election Commission (NEC) was expected to announce the official results later on Thursday. Nearly 29.7 million people, or 67% of eligible voters, cast their ballots, according to the NEC, including 14 million who had cast their ballots in early voting last week.

It marked the highest ever turnout for a parliamentary election, though the numbers were down from the 2022 presidential vote that narrowly brought Yoon to power.

Yoon, who took office in May 2022, was not up for election this time but his ability to pass legislation is likely to be badly damaged by the poor showing by his PPP.

He has suffered low ratings for months, hamstrung in implementing his pledges to cut taxes, ease business regulations and expand family support in the world’s fastest ageing society.

Mason Richey, a professor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, said Yoon might focus more on his overseas agenda now, though those plans could also be at risk if the opposition seeks to cut budgets with its majority.

“Given his likely lame duck status, the temptation for Yoon will be to focus on foreign policy where he will still have statutory power,” Richey said.

From Arvind Kejriwal's Aide To Critic: All About Raaj Anand Who Quit AAP

From Arvind Kejriwal's Aide To Critic: All About Raaj Anand Who Quit AAP

He was fielded by the party from Patel Nagar reserved constituency in 2020 Assembly polls (File)

New Delhi:

Raaj Kumar Anand, who shocked an already beleaguered AAP on Wednesday by quitting the party and the government, was associated with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal since his anti-corruption movement days.

But as he quit the Cabinet, he said the Aam Aadmi Party which was born out of a crusade against corruption is “embroiled” in corruption now and it has “become difficult for me to stay in this party”.

The Patel Nagar MLA’s story is one of rags to riches though. According to his official bio on the Delhi government portal, his parents had to send him to his maternal grandparents in Aligarh “due to poverty”.

“His maternal grandfather was a ragman and whose financial condition was not that good so that he could educate his grandson,” the portal said.

The 57-year-old leader’s profile also describes him as a person whose life was “full of struggles”. Anand had to work as a “child labourer” in a padlock factory in Aligarh, it read.

But he later on succeeded as a businessman. “From making pillows by using discarded foam from factories to becoming a successful businessman in Rexine Leather, Anand’s journey may appear to be an easy and simple, but in reality it has gone through many difficulties and ups and downs,” it said.

In his Delhi Assembly poll affidavit in 2020, his assets were pegged at Rs 78.9 crore.

Speaking to reporters as he resigned from the party, he said, “I joined Arvind Kejriwal at a time when he said from the Ramlila Ground (the venue for the India Against Corruption movement) that country will change after its politics changes. Politics did not change but the politicians have now changed.”

“The Aam Aadmi Party is embroiled in corruption. Given the situation, it has become difficult for me to stay in this party. That is why through your medium I want to convey that I am resigning from this party and my minister’s post,” he told the reporters.

A masters of arts (political science) from Bundelkhand University, Anand actively participated in the ‘India Against Corruption’ in 2011 under the “influence” of Mr Kejriwal.

He joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) founded by Mr Kejriwal and other leaders of the anti-corruption movement in 2012. He was fielded by the party from Patel Nagar reserved constituency in 2020 Assembly polls that he won by defeating his nearest rival from the BJP.

In November 2022, he joined the Delhi cabinet and was holding the portfolios of Social Welfare, SC and ST, Gurdwara Elections and Cooperative.

Hamas Leader's Family Killed In Gaza Strike As Truce Talks Drag On

Hamas Leader's Family Killed In Gaza Strike As Truce Talks Drag On

Israel confirmed the killings, saying the sons were “Hamas operatives”.

Palestinian Territories:

An Israeli strike Wednesday killed three of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh’s sons in Gaza, the Palestinian leader and Israel’s military said, as war rages in the Palestinian territory despite ongoing truce negotiations.

Hamas said in a statement that three of Haniyeh’s sons and four of his grandchildren were killed in the air strike.

Israel confirmed the killings, saying the sons were “Hamas operatives” who were “on their way to carry out terrorist activities”.

The strike came as talks in Cairo aimed at a ceasefire and a hostage release deal dragged on without signs of a breakthrough.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Haniyeh, who is based in Qatar, suggested the strike was an attempt to shift Hamas’s negotiating stance, but insisted it would not work.

US President Joe Biden meanwhile said Hamas “needs to move” on the latest truce proposal, which the militant group has said it was considering.

The United States has also been ramping up pressure on Israel to agree to a truce, increase the amount of aid it allows into the besieged Gaza Strip and abandon plans to invade the southern city of Rafah.

Biden labelled Israel’s conduct of the war a “mistake” in an interview broadcast on Tuesday, before warning on Wednesday that it was not allowing enough aid into the territory.

As Israeli forces kept up combat operations and air strikes across the Gaza Strip, Muslims gathered to pray amid the devastation of the six-month war, to mark the first day of Eid al-Fitr which ends the fasting month of Ramadan.

The war broke out with Hamas’s October 7 attack against Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to Israeli figures.

Palestinian militants also took about 250 hostages, 129 of whom remain in Gaza, including 34 the Israeli army says are dead.

Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed at least 33,482 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry.

– ‘Disproportionate response’ –

Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz said that militarily “Hamas is defeated” but insisted that Israeli troops would nevertheless enter Rafah and return to Khan Yunis, from which they withdrew several days ago.

The army would have to fight for years to come, “in the Gaza Strip and in the West Bank and in the Lebanon front”, he added.

More than 1.5 million civilians are sheltering from the war in Rafah, the last Gazan city yet to face an Israeli ground invasion.

Israel’s close ally the United States has repeatedly warned against an invasion.

Biden, voicing his growing frustration with the hawkish Netanyahu, issued some of his sternest criticism yet of the war.

“I think what he’s doing is a mistake,” Biden told the US network Univision in an interview that aired on Tuesday night having been recorded last week.

He urged Netanyahu to “just call for a ceasefire, allow for the next six, eight weeks, total access to all food and medicine going into” Gaza.

Talks mediated by the United States, Egypt and Qatar have been ongoing since Sunday, with Hamas still considering the latest proposal.

Hamas spokesman in Doha Hossam Badran told AFP: “Hamas is studying the offer presented… It has not responded yet.”

A framework being circulated would halt fighting for six weeks and see the exchange of about 40 hostages for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

Biden, speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, said “It’s now up to Hamas, they need to move on the proposal that’s been made”.

Reacting to the strike that killed his sons and grandchildren, Haniyeh told Al Jazeera, “if they (Israel) think that targeting my children… at the peak of these talks and before the movement’s response, if they think that this will force Hamas to change its positions, they are delusional”.

Beyond Washington, there has been a growing chorus of international criticism aimed at Israel’s conduct of the war and the paucity of aid entering the territory.

On Wednesday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez warned that what he called Israel’s “disproportionate response” in Gaza risked “destabilising the Middle East, and as a consequence, the entire world”.

Spain is among several Western nations, including Ireland and Australia, to have suggested they would recognise a Palestinian state in the near future as a starting point for wider peace talks.

– ‘Sea change’ in aid supply –

In central Gaza — the only area where Israeli ground troops are actively deployed — a strike on a home in the Nuseirat camp killed 14 people, the health ministry said.

The Israeli military said on Wednesday that “Israeli troops are continuing to operate in the central Gaza Strip and killed a number of terrorists over the past day”.

The military added that aircraft had “struck dozens of terror targets in the Gaza Strip, including military sites, launchers, tunnel shafts and infrastructure”.

Washington’s tougher line on aid has brought some results, the US Agency for International Development said.

Recent days had seen a “sea change” in aid deliveries, said USAID administrator Samantha Power, although she insisted Israel needed to do more.

On Wednesday Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said Israel would “flood Gaza with aid”, using a new crossing point on its northern border, streamlined checks and two new routes organised with Jordan.

He said they expected to hit 500 aid trucks entering Gaza a day, which would match the average level of aid and commercial trucks reaching the territory before the war.

Regional tensions have surged amid the conflict.

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Israel that it “must be punished and will be punished” for a strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus last week that Tehran has blamed on Israel.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz replied with a Persian-language post saying “if Iran attacks from its territory, Israel will respond and attack Iran”.

Probe Agency Seeks Arrest Of AAP's Amanatullah Khan In Waqf Board Case

Probe Agency Seeks Arrest Of AAP's Amanatullah Khan In Waqf Board Case

Earlier, Court had issued summons to AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan in money laundering case.

New Delhi:

The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday moved a Delhi court seeking arrest warrant against AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan in a money laundering case related to alleged irregularities in appointments in the Delhi Waqf Board.

Special Judge for CBI and ED, Rakesh Syal, posted the matter for April 18 after the ED sought time to file certain documents in support of the application.

“Fresh application for issuance of open ended non-bailable warrant against Amanatullah Khan has been received from the Bail and Filing Section. It be checked and registered as per rules SPP (special public prosecutor) for ED seeks some time to file certain documents in support of the application. Heard. As requested, put up for consideration on April 18, 2024,” the judge said.

Mr Khan, the Okhla MLA of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was not named as an accused in a recent chargesheet filed by the ED.

The ED, however, moved a magisterial court recently seeking prosecution of Mr Khan for allegedly evading agency’s summons in the case case.

The federal probe agency also alleged before the ACMM that Mr Khan has elevated his role from witness to accused by filing anticipatory bail plea and running away from the investigation.

The ED had also stated that the agency was not able to conclude probe against Mr Khan because he was not presenting himself before it.

“All the other persons are the aides of this particular person. His role is much larger than the other accused persons who have been already arrested and chargesheeted,” the ED had said.

The agency has named five entities in its prosecution complaint (the ED’s equivalent of a chargesheet), including three suspected associates of Mr Khan — Zeeshan Haider, Daud Nasir and Jawed Imam Siddiqui.

The agency had, after conducting raids on premises linked to Mr Khan and some others in October last year, claimed that the AAP MLA had acquired “huge proceeds of crime” in cash through illegal recruitment of staff to the Delhi Waqf Board and invested those for purchasing immovable assets in the name of his associates.

The searches were conducted in the case related to the illegal recruitment of staff and illegitimate personal gains made by the accused by unfairly leasing out the Waqf Board properties from 2018 to 2022 when Mr Khan was its chairperson, the ED has alleged.

The money laundering case stems from an FIR lodged by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and three Delhi Police complaints.

Several “incriminating” material in the form of physical and digital evidence were seized during the raids, indicating Khan’s involvement in the offence of money laundering, as per the agency.
