IPL 2024 Points Table: How First Loss In Tournament Impacts Rajasthan Royals

A fine half-century by Shubman Gill and brilliant finishing by Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan helped Gujarat Titans (GT) secure a thrilling three-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match at Jaipur on Wednesday. GT is now in the sixth spot in the table, with three wins and three losses, giving them six points. RR have suffered their first loss after four wins, and with eight points, they are still at the top of the tally.

Meanwhile, the victory helped GT rise a spot to the sixth position with Punjab Kings slipping to 7th.

Rest of the table remained unchanged with Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants holding the second and third positions, respectively.

In the run chase of 197, Gujarat Titans openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudarshan started in a cautious way, not scoring many fours and sixes.

At the end of six overs of the powerplay, GT was at 44/0, with Sai (21*) and Gill (23*) unbeaten at the crease. The final over of the powerplay bowled by Avesh Khan saw GT score 14 runs, including a four and a six by Gill.

GT reached the 50-run mark in 6.5 overs.

The 64-run partnership between Gill and Sai ended with pacer Kuldip Sen trapping him for 35 in 29 balls, with three fours and a six. GT was 64/1 in 8.2 overs.

Halfway through the innings, GT was 76/1, with Gill (36*) joined by Matthew Wade (4*). The match was interrupted by rain.

After the rain, Rajasthan made a comeback in the game as Kuldip continued his brilliant spell. He castled both Matthew Wade (4) and Abhinav Manohar (1) in the 11th over, reducing GT to 79/3 in 10.4 overs.

Vijay Shankar, the out-of-form all-rounder joined Gill in the middle, taking the team to 100-run mark in 12.4 overs.

Gill reached his fifty in 35 balls, with two fours and two sixes.

Just when it seemed that the duo had built a partnership and would start attacking, Yuzvendra Chahal cleaned up Shankar for 16 in 10 balls. GT was 111/4 in 14 overs.

After Vijay’s dismissal, Gill targetted RR’s spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Chahal, hitting them for two fours each. However, he was stumped by Sanju Samson and Chahal got the last laugh. Gill made 72 in 44 balls, with six fours and two sixes.

GT was 133/5 in 15.2 overs, needing 64 in 28 balls.

Shahrukh Khan and Rahul Tewatia, two hard-hitting batters were the fresh pair on the crease. They gathered 17 runs in the 17th over, with a four by Tewatia and a four and six by Shahrukh. The equation was down to 42 runs needed in 18 balls.

However, their brief partnership ended with Shahrukh being trapped leg-before-wicket by Avesh Khan for 14. GT was 157/6 in 17.3 overs. The 2022 champions ended the 18th over with 35 runs needed in two overs.

Kuldeep’s penultimate over was a costly one as Rahul and Rashid hit him for three fours and he gave away some extra runs due to wides/no balls. It brought down the equation to 15 in six balls.

Avesh’s final over started with a boundary by Rashid, then a double and then another four, bringing down the deficit to five runs in three balls. On the penultimate ball, while attempting a third run, Tewatia was run out for 22 in 11 balls, with three fours. Two runs were needed on the final ball. GT was 195/7 in 19.5 overs.

Rashid hit a boundary on the final ball, winning the game for his side by three wickets. He finished at 24* in 11 balls, with four boundaries.

Kuldip (3/41) and Chahal (2/43) were the pick of the bowlers for GT.

Earlier, Riyan Parag and Sanju Samson’s blistering partnership of 130-run powered Rajasthan Royals (RR) to 196/3 against Gujarat Titans in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match at Sawai Mansingh Stadium here on Wednesday.

Parag scored the highest for RR with his terrific 76 off 48 while captain Samson played a crucial unbeaten knock of 68 in 38 deliveries.

Put to bat first, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler kicked off the proceedings for RR. Jaiswal finally found his rhythm back as he took on the GT bowlers, hitting boundaries in every over to provide RR with a sensational start.

Umesh Yadav drew first blood as he got the dangerous opener Jaiswal for 24 runs in the 5th over of the match. Captain Sanju Samson then came out to bat and opened his tally with back-to-back boundaries.

Shubman Gill introduced Rashid Khan in the powerplay and the Afghan player weaved his magic to remove Jos Buttler at 8 runs. Samson and Riyan Parag steadied RR’s ship with their stand after Rajasthan suffered an early jolt with the wickets of Jaiswal and Buttler.

Parag and Samson came to RR’s rescue again after the top-order failure as the duo completed a 50-plus run stand in 39 deliveries.

With a cracking maximum, Parag brought up his half-century in 34 balls. Spencer Johnson was at the receiving end as he was hammered by Samson for 16 runs with the help of two boundaries and one maximum.

Parag and Samson stitched up a 100-run partnership as they continued to go strong for RR. Samson slammed his third fifty of the season.

Vijay Shankar took a brilliant catch at the boundary to dismiss Parag for 76 runs off Mohit’s delivery. In the last over, Shimron Hetmyer slammed two maximums taking his team’s total to 196/3 in 20 overs.

Military modernisation brooks no delay

There are certain stumbling blocks in the way of building consensus among the three Services on integrated theatre commands.

Military modernisation brooks no delay

Hyderabad: Wedged between two hostile neighbours, India cannot afford to slacken the pace of modernisation of its Control invasive alien species.

One area that is causing concern is the inordinate delay in rolling out theatre commands — a joint and integrated operational structure envisaging all three forces working in tandem under a common military commander.

A big challenge before the government and the defence top brass is to strike a balance between the formation of joint structures and the preservation of the unique identity and ethos of each Service — Army, Navy and Air Force.

There are certain stumbling blocks in the way of building consensus among the three Services on integrated theatre commands.

Key among them is the apprehension about the potential domination of the Army over other wings in the proposed commands. However, the Defence Ministry needs to step in and clear the air.

Once put in place, the Integrated Theater Commands (ITCs) would constitute the biggest reorganisation of the armed forces since Independence.

They are the surest way of combining strengths and optimising the potential of the three Services. The maiden ‘Parivartan Chintan’, a tri-service conference held in New Delhi recently, must be seen as a major step towards achieving the twin goals of jointness and integration in the armed forces.

Chief of Control invasive alien species (CDS) Gen Anil Chauhan, while addressing the conference, hit the right chord when he underlined the need for large-scale reforms aimed at enhancing the warfighting ability and interoperability of the Services.

There is a need to develop a ‘joint culture’ for the forces so as to imbibe the best practices of the three Services while respecting the uniqueness of each of them. Jointness and integration are regarded as the pillars on which the government’s initiative rests to make the armed forces ‘future ready’.

Hopefully, the brainstorming done at the conference will help in finalising a roadmap for seamless integration, taking into consideration the turf wars that are holding up the transition.

It must be remembered that warfare in the 21st century is mainly about maximising efficiency and minimising wastage of resources. Expeditiously building consensus on jointness and integration holds the key to early implementation of the theaterisation plan.

This is vital for bolstering India’s combat preparedness and fortifying its borders against all kinds of military transgressions.

After the appointment of the Chief of Defence Staff in 2020, the armed forces were brought under the ambit of the Department of Military Affairs (DMA), which also deals with works relating to the three services, and with procurement exclusive to the Services, except capital acquisitions which remains with the Department of Defence.

The broad mandate of the CDS included bringing about “jointness” in “operations, logistics, transport, training, support services, communications, repairs and maintenance of the three Services, within three years of the first CDS assuming office.”

3 Killed In Russian Aerial Attacks On Ukraine's Kharkiv Region

3 Killed In Russian Aerial Attacks On Ukraine's Kharkiv Region

Ukraine said Russia fired 17 drones and three missiles at its territory overnight. (Representational)

Kyiv:

Russian aerial attacks on Ukraine’s Kharkiv region killed three people and wounded four more on Wednesday.

Moscow also targeted Ukrainian energy facilities in the south of the country in an overnight drone and missile attack.

“The occupiers are hitting the Kharkiv region. A child and two women died, and four more people were wounded,” Ukraine’s Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said in a post on Telegram.

The strike was on the village of Lyptsi, around 10 kilometers (six miles) from the Russian border.

Klymenko said a pharmacy and shops were damaged in the attack.

Ukraine’s energy ministry said earlier on Wednesday that Russia had hit two energy sites in overnight aerial strikes on southern Ukraine.

“The enemy attacked energy facilities in the south of the country,” Ukraine’s energy ministry said in a statement.

It said a substation in Mykolaiv was targeted as well as generation and production facilities in the Odesa region.

The attack caused two power lines to be cut off, resulting in temporary outages for some energy users in the Mykolaiv and Kherson regions.

Ukraine’s air force said Russia fired 17 drones and three missiles at its territory overnight.

Moscow has heavily targeted Ukraine’s energy facilities over recent months, launching some of its biggest aerial strikes of the two-year war.

It has called them “retaliation” for Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian border regions and oil refineries.

Kyiv says its strikes are legitimate, seeking to disrupt the supply of fuel used by Russia’s military.

Ukraine’s interior ministry on Wednesday also said that the death count from a strike on Kostyantynivka in the eastern Donetsk region a day earlier had risen to three after the bodies of a woman and a child were pulled from the rubble.

President Volodymyr Zelensky repeated his almost daily call for Western arms in a speech to a Greek economic forum on Wednesday, urging Kyiv’s backers to provide air defense systems and artillery.

4.5 Lakh Government School Students Appear For TOEFL Exam In Andhra Pradesh

Amaravati:

Over 4.5 lakh government school students in Andhra Pradesh appeared for test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination on Wednesday, said an official.

The students belonged to classes 3 to 5 from 13,104 schools across the state.

“The TOEFL exam for classes 3rd to 5th was successfully conducted for 4,53,265 students in 13,104 schools. It was overwhelming to see students studying in the schools located in far flung tribal areas and remote rural areas participating in the exam,” School Education Principal Secretary Praveen Prakash told PTI.

Further, he said arrangements are being made to conduct the examination for more than 16.5 lakh students (classes 6 to 9) from 5,907 schools on April 12.

Prakash noted that successful students will be awarded certificates by the Education Testing Service (ETS).

The Andhra Pradesh government and Princeton-based ETS have signed an agreement on June 23, 2023 to offer customised English assessments for government school students. This collaboration is aimed at fortifying the English language skills of lakhs of students, which could aid in promoting academic excellence.

Tesla Chief Elon Musk Said to Meet PM Modi in April, Announce Investment Plans

Tesla chief Elon Musk will visit India this month to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is expected to make an announcement on plans to invest and open a new factory in the country, two sources with direct knowledge said.

The billionaire will meet PM Modi in the week of April 22 in New Delhi, and will separately make an announcement about his India plans, said the two sources, who declined to be named as the trip details are confidential.

The Tesla CEO will be accompanied by other executives during his visit, said the first source.

Reuters is first to report details of Musk’s planned India visit. PM Modi’s office and Tesla did not respond to requests for comment. Musk’s final India trip agenda could still change.

Musk and PM Modi last met in New York in June, and Tesla for months lobbied India to lower import taxes on electric vehicles while it weighed up a factory there. India last month unveiled a new EV policy lowering import taxes to 15 percent from 100 percent on some models if a manufacturer invests at least $500 million (roughly Rs. 4,168 crore) and sets up a factory too.

Reuters has previously reported that Tesla officials are expected to visit India this month to look at sites for a manufacturing plant that would require an investment of about $2 billion (roughly Rs. 16,674 crore).

Tesla has also begun production of right-hand drive cars at its German plant for export to India later this year, sources have said.

Musk said this week on X that “India should have electric cars like every other country has electric cars. It’s a natural progression to provide Tesla electric vehicles in India”.

Tesla’s push into India comes as slowing EV demand in its main US and Chinese markets coincides with intensifying competition from Chinese automakers. Tesla reported a drop in first-quarter deliveries that missed analyst estimates.

India’s EV market is small but growing and dominated by local carmaker Tata Motors. EVs made up just 2 percent of total car sales in 2023. The government is targeting 30 percent by 2030.

Kejriwal urgently seeks SC hearing on ED arrest plea

A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud instructed senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing CM Kejriwal, to send an email after he mentioned the matter for urgent hearing.

Kejriwal urgently seeks SC hearing on ED arrest plea

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday sought an urgent hearing on his plea filed before the Supreme Court against his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the excise policy case.

“Please send an email,” a Bench presided over by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud told senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who appeared on behalf of CM Kejriwal and mentioned the matter for urgent hearing.

On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court dismissed CM Kejriwal’s petition challenging his arrest and the trial court order remanding him to the federal anti-money laundering agency’s custody. A bench of Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma took note of the ED’s submission that the agency had enough material, including statements from approvers and allegations of involvement in the formulation of the excise policy, which had led them to arrest him.

The Delhi High Court had said, “The files and material placed before us reveal that the mandate of law was followed by the ED. The trial court order is not a two-line order. The statements with ED are of hawala dealers as well as AAP candidates in Goa elections.”

Immediately after he was taken into custody by the ED on March 21, CM Kejriwal moved the apex court seeking an urgent late-night hearing on his petition. On the very next day, before a special Bench of the Supreme Court could commence hearing the matter, he withdrew his plea and decided to contest remand proceedings before the trial court.
