Samsung Galaxy AI Now Supports These Languages and Dialects

Samsung updated its native artificial intelligence (AI) suite of features for its smartphones, Galaxy AI, with support for new languages and dialects. The update has added three new languages and three dialects to the AI tool. The additions are part of the South Korean tech giant’s Spring 2024 update. The company has also revealed its plans to add four more languages and two more dialects later this year. Once those languages are added, it will bring the total number of supported languages to 20.

The announcement was made by Samsung US newsroom’s post. TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “Committed to democratizing mobile AI for all, Galaxy AI’s language expansion this year will allow even more Galaxy users to communicate beyond language barriers on a scale that is completely unique to Samsung. We will continue to innovate our technology and pioneer premium mobile AI experiences so that even more users are equipped with the right tools to unleash their unlimited potential.”

The three new languages which are being added to Galaxy AI are Arabic, Indonesian, and Russian. Alongside Australian English, Cantonese, and Canadian French dialects are also being added. Further, later this year, Samsung is planning to add four more languages including Romanian, Turkish, Dutch and, Swedish. Two more dialects — traditional Chinese and European Portuguese — will also be added.

Language support is important for several features in Galaxy AI. For instance, Live Translate which produces two-way, real-time voice and text translations of phone calls, requires the AI to understand the language and dialect in order to translate them. Similarly, the Interpreter feature can instantly translate live conversations through a split-screen view so that two people standing opposite each other can see each other’s translation. This also requires language support for the AI to analyse speech.

Galaxy AI was introduced by the tech giant with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series. However, recently, it was expanded to the Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and the Galaxy Tab S9 series through the One UI 6.1 update.

Russian Missiles Destroy Major Kyiv Power Plant, Damage Other Facilities

Russian Missiles Destroy Major Kyiv Power Plant, Damage Other Facilities

The attacks hammered thermal and hydroelectric power plants

Kyiv:

Russian missiles and drones destroyed a large electricity plant near Kyiv and hit power facilities in several regions on Thursday, officials said, ramping up pressure on the embattled energy system as Ukraine runs low on air defences.

The major attack more than two years since Russia’s full-scale invasion completely destroyed the Trypilska coal-powered thermal power plant near the capital, a senior official at the company that runs the facility told Reuters.

Unconfirmed footage shared on social media showed a fire raging at the large Soviet-era facility and black smoke belching out of it.

“We need air defence and other defence support, not eye-closing and long discussions,” President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on the Telegram messaging app, condemning the attacks as “terror”.

Kyiv’s appeals for urgent air defence supplies from the West have grown increasingly desperate since Russia renewed its long-range aerial assaults on the Ukrainian energy system last month.

The attacks, which hammered thermal and hydroelectric power plants, have sparked fears about the resilience of an energy system that was hobbled by a Russian air campaign in the war’s first winter.

Ukraine’s air force commander said air defences took down 18 of the incoming missiles and 39 drones. The attack used 82 missiles and drones in total, the military said.

The destroyed power plant outside Kyiv, a major power supplier for the Kyiv, Cherkasy and Zhytomyr regions, is the third and last facility owned by state-owned energy company Centrenergo.

“Everything is destroyed,” Andriy Gota, head of the supervisory board of the company, said when asked about the situation at Centrenergo.

The Ukrenergo grid operator said its substations and power generating facilities had been damaged in attacks on the regions of Odesa, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv and Kyiv.

Ukraine’s largest private electricity company DTEK, which lost 80% of its generating capacity during Russia’s March 22 and March 29 attacks, said Russia’s attacks hit two of its power stations, inflicting serious damage.

The strikes also attacked two underground storage facilities where Ukraine stores natural gas, including some owned by foreign companies, energy company Naftogaz said. The facilities continued to operate, it added.

“The situation in Ukraine is dire; there is not a moment to lose,” said U.S. ambassador Bridget Brink, adding that 10 missiles struck critical infrastructure in the Kharkiv area alone.

The region of Kharkiv, which borders Russia and already has long, rolling blackouts in place, was forced to cut electricity for 200,000 people, presidential aide Oleksiy Kuleba said.

Air Defence Pleas

Ukraine has warned it could run out of air defence munitions if Russia keeps up the intensity of its strikes and that it is already having to make difficult decisions about what to defend.

There has been a slowdown in vital Western assistance and a major U.S. aid package has been blocked by Republicans in Congress for many months, Ukraine has said.

Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Russia’s overnight attack used six ballistic missiles, which can hit targets within minutes and are much harder to shoot down. Kyiv says that is why it needs U.S.-made Patriot air defences.

“Ukraine remains the only country in the world facing ballistic strikes. There is currently no other place for ‘Patriots’ to be,” Kuleba wrote on social media platform X.

Meta Turns To AI To Protect Teens From "Sextortion" Scams On Instagram

Meta Turns To AI To Protect Teens From 'Sextortion' Scams On Instagram

Some 3,000 young people fell victim to sexploitation scams in 2022 in US

Washington:

Meta said on Thursday it was developing new tools to protect teenage users from “sextortion” scams on its Instagram platform, which has been accused by US politicians of damaging the mental health of youngsters.

Gangs run sextortion scams by persuading people to provide explicit images of themselves and then threatening to release them to the public unless they receive money.

Meta said it was testing an AI-driven “nudity protection” tool that would find and blur images containing nudity that were sent to minors on the app’s messaging system.

“This way, the recipient is not exposed to unwanted intimate content and has the choice to see the image or not,” Capucine Tuffier, who is in charge of child protection at Meta France, told AFP.

The US company said it would also offer advice and safety tips to anyone sending or receiving such messages.

Some 3,000 young people fell victim to sexploitation scams in 2022 in the United States, according to the authorities there.

Separately, more than 40 US states began suing Meta in October in a case that accuses the company of having “profited from children’s pain”.

The legal filing alleged Meta had exploited young users by creating a business model designed to maximise time they spend on the platform despite harm to their health.

‘On-device machine learning’

Meta announced in January it would roll out measures to protect under-18s that included tightening content restrictions and boosting parental supervision tools.

The firm said on Thursday that the latest tools were building on “our long-standing work to help protect young people from unwanted or potentially harmful contact”.

“We’re testing new features to help protect young people from sextortion and intimate image abuse, and to make it more difficult for potential scammers and criminals to find and interact with teens,” the company said.

It added that the “nudity protection” tool used “on-device machine learning”, a kind of Artificial Intelligence, to analyse images.

The firm, which is also constantly accused of violating the data privacy of its users, stressed that it would not have access to the images unless users reported them.

Meta said it would also use AI tools to identify accounts sending offending material and severely restrict their ability to interact with young users on the platform.

Whistle-blower Frances Haugen, a former Facebook engineer, publicised research in 2021 carried out internally by Meta — then known as Facebook — which showed the company had long been aware of the dangers its platforms posed for the mental health for young people.

Was Briefed On China's Interference After 2019 Elections: Ex-Canada Minister

Was Briefed On China's Interference After 2019 Elections: Ex-Canada Minister

Karina Gould said such attempts at foreign interference were not uncommon.

Ottawa:

Former minister for Democratic Institutions, Karina Gould, revealed that the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) briefed her after the 2019 federal elections on low-level interference by China, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported.

However, Gould clarified that despite these activities, the integrity of the vote remained intact.

Gould, who held the ministerial position from early 2017 to November 2019, testified before the foreign interference inquiry, noting that CSIS had informed her about Beijing’s involvement in the lead-up to the October 2019 elections. She added that such attempts at foreign interference were not uncommon, likening them to historical occurrences dating back to ancient Greece, CBC reported.

“Probably in every election that Canada has ever had, there have been attempts at foreign interference just like in probably every election in a democracy around the world — probably since ancient Greece — there have been attempts at foreign interference,” Gould said.

“Whether they are successful or not is another question,” she added.

On her involvement in addressing potential threats to the federal elections, Gould elaborated on the creation of the Panel of Five, a group of bureaucrats tasked with assessing such risks. She highlighted the panel’s decision not to issue a public alert despite attempts by China and other state actors to meddle with both the 2019 and 2021 elections, citing the panel’s determination that these attempts did not meet the threshold for public disclosure.

Significantly, both elections were won by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

In defence of the panel’s high threshold, Gould said, “The very act of making a decision to announce something publicly could be seen as interference itself.”

She added that she abstained from being briefed on foreign interference during the 2019 elections due to her vested interest in the electoral outcome, deeming it inappropriate to receive such intelligence briefings.

The inquiry, overseen by Commissioner Marie-Josee Hogue, aims to evaluate the dissemination of information within the government regarding alleged meddling in the previous two federal elections, according to CBC.

Triggered by media reports and opposition demands, the inquiry delves into various claims, including allegations concerning former Liberal candidate Han Dong’s purported involvement in a Chinese foreign interference network during the 2019 elections.

Jeremy Broadhurst, the Liberals’ national campaign director for the 2019 federal elections, however, refuted these claims, stating that security officials merely provided information without making recommendations or advising specific actions to be taken.

Ahead of her testimony, Gould engaged with commission staff in a classified setting, where she addressed concerns related to the Don Valley North riding and alleged foreign interference during the Toronto-area nomination contest. She clarified that she was not briefed on these matters during or after the election.

Prime Minister Trudeau is also scheduled to testify, marking a significant moment in the inquiry’s proceedings.

While Trudeau’s appearance was initially intended to conclude this stage of the inquiry, Commissioner Hogue agreed to recall CSIS Director David Vigneault to respond to further inquiries about certain documents. Hogue’s interim report is expected in early May, with the inquiry transitioning to broader policy discussions thereafter, aiming for a final report by year-end, CBC reported.
