Egypt’s Sisi sworn in for third term as president

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi

Egypt’s Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has been sworn in before parliament for the third term in office as president.

He won the December election with 89.6 percent of the vote against three unknown candidates.

The new six-year term will let him remain president until 2030.

Speaking before parliament on Tuesday, Sisi vowed to “remain faithful to my work, my eyes seeing only your interests and this country’s.”

He said he “renews his vow to continue on the course to build the nation.”

The president’s oath marked what should be his final six-year term as leader of Egypt, according to the constitution.

Sisi, the former army chief, came to power after the 2013 overthrow of Egypt’s first popularly elected president, Mohamed Morsi. He was elected president the following year and then again in 2018.

He extended the presidential mandate from four to six years and amended the constitution to raise the limit on consecutive terms in office from two to three.
