Fighting began on October 7 when Hamas launched an attack into the occupied territories, killing 1,200 people, and kidnapping about 240, according to Israeli officials. Israel’s subsequent air and ground campaign in Gaza has killed 15,000 people, mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, and reduced large parts of the north of the territory to rubble.
