As many as 37 congressional Democrats, including Representative Nancy Pelosi, former House speaker and a key ally of Joe Biden, have signed a letter, urging the US president to stop transfer of American weapons to the Israeli regime in light of the latter’s crimes in the Gaza Strip.
Representatives Barbara Lee, Rashida Tlaib, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez were also among the signatories of the letter that was addressed to Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday.
The letter also urged that the Biden administration conduct its own probe into an Israeli airstrike that killed seven staff of the World Central Kitchen (WCK) aid group last Monday.
“In light of the recent strike against aid workers and the ever-worsening humanitarian crisis, we believe it is unjustifiable to approve these weapons transfers,” the letter said.
More than 33,200 Palestinians, mostly women, children, and adolescents, have died since October 7, when the regime began a genocidal war against the Palestinian territory.
A report published by The Washington Post last month, revealed that the Biden administration had arranged “over 100” individual arms transfers to Israel since the start of the brutal military onslaught.
The previously unreported triple-digit figure includes thousands of precision-guided munitions, small-diameter bombs, bunker busters, small arms, and other lethal aid.
The war also enjoys political support on the part of Washington, which has struck down several United Nations Security Council resolutions calling for a ceasefire.
