Hyderabad: The Employees’ Union (EU) led alliance appears to have gained an advantage in the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) recognised union elections, with preliminary reports indicating support in the Greater Hyderabad region, even as the contest remains competitive in several districts.

The elections, held on Friday, after a gap of nearly a decade, recorded an impressive 98 per cent turnout, with 34,182 of the corporation’s 34,905 employees casting their votes. As many as 12 unions contested the polls across 115 polling centres covering 97 depots.

The EU-led alliance, comprising the Employees’ Union, Telangana Mazdoor Union (TMU) and National Mazdoor Union (NMU), is reported to have secured an estimated 4,500-vote lead in the state-level contest.

In Greater Hyderabad, the alliance reportedly led in 23 of the 26 depots, while the Telangana Workers’ Union (TWU)-led alliance registered gains in parts of the districts, including the Khammam region.

The workers’ unions campaigned on long-pending employee grievances, welfare measures and the demand for the merger of RTC employees with the state government.

Postal ballots for employees on duty outside the state are scheduled to be cast on October 14 and 15, and the official results are expected on October 17.
