Hyderabad: BRS MLC Dasoju Sravan on Monday demanded immediate measures to address what he described as a deepening crisis in Telangana’s school and higher education sectors, including a mega DSC recruitment drive, filling teacher vacancies and increasing the budgetary allocation for education.

In an open letter to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on World Teachers’ Day, Sravan criticised the Congress government over the closure of around 1,392 government schools in a single academic year between 2024-25 and 2025-26, citing UDISE data.

He expressed concern that around 2,245 schools had no students in 2024-25, while 4,793 schools had only one teacher for around 64,057 students, according to the 2024-25 records.

Sravan said more than 19,000 teacher posts remained vacant in government schools and questioned the delay in issuing the mega DSC notification promised under the Congress government’s job calendar.

He said the Chief Minister should take corrective measures to improve the government education sector and the working conditions of teachers and students instead of merely extending greetings to teachers on World Teachers’ Day.

Sravan demanded an annual DSC calendar, a white paper on school closures and mergers, and measures to ensure that every school had at least two teachers. He also sought an end to contractual teaching appointments and regular recruitment.

The BRS MLC sought immediate announcement of the Pay Revision Commission (PRC), release of pending dearness allowances (DAs), annual calendars for promotions and transfers, and filling of vacant District Education Officer (DEO) and Mandal Education Officer (MEO) posts.

He also sought measures to protect senior teachers affected by mandatory Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) requirements.

On higher education, Sravan demanded that university faculty vacancies be filled within one academic year, appointment of a full-time Education Minister and action against alleged exploitation in private educational institutions.

He demanded written replies to his questions and an all-party meeting to discuss measures to revive the education system.

On funding, Sravan said education should receive at least 15 per cent of the State budget, with a roadmap to increase the allocation to 18 per cent.
