More than 300,000 people have been forced to evacuate or take shelter in France and Spain as fast-moving wildfires race toward major cities.
The flames have devoured fields, forests and homes in the two countries, and caused at least one death in Spain’s Valencia area. The inferno is now inching toward the capital Madrid, where local officials say things are unlike anything they have seen before.
French authorities separately say the flames are at the gates of the Bordeaux metropolitan area. Around 30 fires are burning at the same time across France. The flames, however, are yet to be contained even with the deployment of thousands of firefighters and firefighting airplanes and helicopters.
The fires were triggered by an unusually-hot summer that has sent temperatures to record highs in most of Europe.
