Video: Dalit Woman Beaten By Cop In Public View In Bihar; Police Clarify

The cop was filmed in his uniform during the incident, triggering an outrage among the public.

Patna:

The visuals of a Dalit woman being beaten by a cop in public view in Bihar’s Sitamarhi has raised concerns over police brutality and prompted a public demand for action. But the police claim the cop was only trying to maintain order after a fight erupted between two sides in a kidnapping case.

Inspector Rajkishore Singh, in-charge of Surasand police station, was seen thrashing the woman on the street with a stick. He struck her multiple times in the Surasand market amid angry exchanges by a crowd, showed a video.

The cop was filmed in his uniform during the incident, triggering an outrage among the public.

Sitamarhi Police, in a statement, said a probe has been ordered into the incident.

The police action allegedly came in a bid to separate two women who were fighting on the street.

Vinod Kumar, Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO), said in a video statement that the incident is linked to the kidnapping of a girl.

“The girl was rescued, but the two sides visited the police station and engaged in a fight among themselves outside. This led to a traffic jam on the road and the cop used his baton to disperse the crowd,” he clarified.

Iran’s security chief meets senior Ansarullah official

Ahmadian met and held talks with Abdul-Salam in the Iranian capital city of Tehran on Sunday.

The two sides exchanged views over issues of mutual interest and regional security.

Praising the resistance of the Yemeni people and government during the difficult years, Ahmadian hailed their courageous actions in supporting the Palestinian people against the aggression and brutal attacks of the Zionist regime.

Yemenis have declared their open support for Palestine’s struggle against the Israeli occupation since the regime launched a devastating war on Gaza on October 7 after the territory’s Palestinian Resistance movements carried out a surprise retaliatory attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, against the occupying entity.

The Yemeni armed forces have in the past several weeks carried out missile and drone attacks on Israeli positions and stepped up attacks against Israeli-linked ships in the Red Sea. They say the attacks will continue until the war stops and Gazans receive the food and medicine they need.

The relentless Israeli military campaign against Gaza has killed over 21,500 people, most of them women and children. Another 55,660 individuals have been wounded.

ISRO Launches Mission To Study Black Holes, 2nd After NASA To Do So

New Delhi:
On New Year’s Day, India started a new mission to solve what is among the oldest mysteries of the universe – black holes. At 9.10 am, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched the XPoSAT or X-ray Polarimeter Satellite from Sriharikota

Here are 10 facts from this big story

  1. At 9.32 am, ISRO announced that the lift-off of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) was normal and XPoSAT was launched successfully. “PSLV-C58 vehicle placed the satellite precisely into the intended orbit of 650 km with 6-degree inclination. The POEM-3 is being scripted,” ISRO posted in X. Soon after, ISRO chief S Somanath announced the successful launch.

  2. Astrophysicist Dipankar Bhattacharya told NDTV that today’s launch was a “textbook launch”. “The expected orbit has been achieved. Now all the expected science is hopefully going to work as planned,” he said.

  3. The XPoSAT mission launch also marked the 60th flight of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). The 260-tonne rocket carries an advanced astronomy observatory meant to study black holes and neutron stars. With this, India is set to become only the second country after the US to have an ‘observatory’ to study black holes.

  4. Using X-ray photons and their polarisation, XPoSAT will help study the radiation from near black holes and neutron stars. It carries two payloads — POLIX (Polarimeter Instrument in X-rays) and XSPECT (X-ray Spectroscopy and Timing).

  5. The satellite will measure polarisation of X-rays in the energy band 8-30keV emanating from about 50 potential cosmic sources through Thomson Scattering by POLIX payload.

  6. It will carry out long term spectral and temporal studies of cosmic X-ray sources. It will also carry out polarisation and spectroscopic measurements of X-ray emissions from cosmic sources through POLIX and XSPECT payloads.

  7. When stars run out of fuel and ‘die’, they collapse under their own gravity and leave behind black holes or neutron stars. Black holes have the highest gravitational force in the universe, and neutron stars have the highest densities. Gathering more information on this, the mission will help unravel mysteries of ultra-extreme environments in space.

  8. The XPoSat satellite cost around Rs 250 crore (approximately $30 million). The NASA IXPE — which is on a similar mission since 2021 — cost $188 million. The Indian satellite is expected to last more than five years, compared to the two-year life span of the NASA IXPE.

  9. Former ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair has said the PSLV rocket system has evolved as the most reliable and cost-effective one in the global scenario. “When we look back in history, we started this journey in 1993 and since then, most of the missions have been successfully completed,” he told news agency ANI.

  10. 2023 was a great year for ISRO and the country. The success of the Chandrayaan mission put India into the elite space club, with the distinction of being the only country to achieve a soft landing near the South Pole of the moon. As 2024 begins, ISRO has its eyes focused on the Gaganyaan launch, India’s first human spaceflight programme.

ISRO successfully launches its maiden X-Ray polarimeter satellite

ISRO successfully launches its maiden X-Ray polarimeter satellite

Sriharikota: ISRO on Monday successfully launched its maiden X-Ray Polarimeter Satellite that would offer several insights into celestial objects like black holes.

ISRO’s ever reliable Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) in its C58 mission, placed the primary X-Ray Polarimeter satellite XPoSat into a 650 Km Low Earth Orbit as intended after lifting off at the pre-fixed time of 9.10 am from the first launch pad here.

As the 25-hour countdown concluded, the 44.4-metre tall rocket lifted off majestically with thunderous applause from spectators who had descended here in large numbers at this spaceport situated about 135 km east of Chennai.

The X-ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat) is aimed to investigate the polarisation of intense X-ray sources in space.

According to ISRO, it is the first dedicated scientific satellite from the space agency to carry out research in space-based polarisation measurements of X-ray emission from celestial sources.

The X-Ray polarisation serves as a crucial diagnostic tool for examining the radiation mechanism and geometry of celestial sources.

The primary payload of XPoSat is POLIX (Polarimeter Instrument in X-Rays) which is designed to measure polarimetry parameters by Raman Research Institute and XSPECT (X-ray Spectroscopy and Timing) built by the U R Rao Satellite Centre, Bengaluru. The Mission life is about five years.

'Franchise Cricket Has Surpassed Test Cricket': Ex-Ind Star's Blunt View

In the past decade or so, the franchise cricket has definitely impacted the international circuit with many players choosing to play the cash-rich tournaments rather than being on national duty. At times, players with a national team contract don’t hesitate from leaving their side’s game for playing in events like the Indian Premier League or the Big Bash League. Reacting to a user’s query regarding the comparison between franchise cricket and Test cricket, former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad came out with a blunt reply.

The user asked the question as South Africa named seven uncapped players in their Test squad for New Zealand. More and more newcomers have been included in the squad as the senior players will be missing the series due to SA20 — a T20 franchise cricket tournament in South Africa.

“What is your take on SA sending third grade teams to NZ tests? Have tests become luxury?” asked the user.

“Sets a very bad precedent. Sad that it has reached this state where Franchise cricket has surpassed Test cricket in priority . Hope this doesn’t become the way forward,” replied Prasad.

Only two of the players who were in South Africa’s Test win over India on Thursday are in a 14-man squad for the two Tests in New Zealand in February.

Cricket South Africa on Saturday named a squad which includes a new captain in left-handed opening batsman Neil Brand.

Batsman Keegan Petersen and David Bedingham are the only players who were part of South Africa’s innings win in the first Test against India in Centurion. Due to a ruling by Cricket South Africa, no players contracted to franchises in the SA20 competition, which overlaps with the Tests, were eligible for selection.

Despite having to travel with a makeshift squad, Test coach Shukri Conrad said he was confident that the team would be competitive.

The early announcement of the touring party appeared to end speculation that opening batsman Dean Elgar might be persuaded to delay his retirement from international cricket beyond the second Test at Newlands in Cape Town, starting on Wednesday.

Elgar was named man of the match in the first Test against India after scoring 185 in South Africa’s only innings. He will lead the team in the second Test following an injury to Temba Bavuma.

South African squad for New Zealand Tests: Neil Brand (captain), David Bedingham, Ruan de Swardt, Clyde Fortuin (wicketkeeper), Zubayr Hamza, Tshepo Moreki, Mihlali Mpongwana, Duanne Olivier, Dane Paterson, Keegan Petersen, Dane Piedt, Raynard van Tonder, Shaun von Berg, Khaya Zondo.

War With South Korea Becoming Reality Because Of US, Says Kim Jong Un

War With South Korea Becoming Reality Because Of US, Says Kim Jong Un

Kim said North Korea needs to “sharpen the sword” to protect itself.

Seoul:

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un told the country’s military commanders the most powerful means must be mobilized to destroy the United States and South Korea if they choose military confrontation, state media reported on Monday.

Kim said the danger of an armed confrontation on the Korean peninsula is fast becoming a reality because of hostile maneuvers by the enemies including the United States, requiring the country to “sharpen the sword” to protect itself.

“If they choose military confrontation and set the fire, we must mobilize all the most powerful means … to deal a crushing blow and completely destroy them,” KCNA state news agency quoted Kim as saying.

Kim hosted senior military leaders on Sunday at the ruling Workers’ Party headquarters to congratulate them on the accomplishments made in 2023, KCNA said.

In separate reports, KCNA said Kim hosted a reception for senior members of the ruling party and attended a late night concert celebrating the new year.

"Something Not Right…": Prasad On Fan's "Chokers" Query For Team India

Former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad recently summed up the Rohit Sharma-led side bitter-sweet 2023 in international cricket. Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Prasad pointed out how India dominated other team during the recently concluded World Cup on home soil, but fell on the final hurdle, losing the final to Australia. Prasad also rued India’s defeat in the World Test Championship (WTC) final to the same opponents. It’s been more than a decade since India last won an ICC trophy, and a fan asked Prasad whether the Indian team is the “new chokers of world cricket”.

While highlighting India’s back-to-back Test series wins in Australia, Prasad refused to give the team the “chokers” tag. However, with India’s ICC title drought extending for a further year, Prasad feels there is something wrong with Indian cricket.

“Sir Do You also Think That Team India Has become New CHOKERS of World Cricket ?? as we have Just Lost 10th Consecutive ICC Knockout in last 10 Years,” the fan asked Prasad.

Prasad replied, saying: “Chokers not, we have won 2 Test series against Australia in Australia, the last one in 2020-21 after 36 all ou, I consider as one of India’s greatest especially with more than half first choice players missing. But there is certainly something not right about not winning any major tournament in 11 years.”

India last won a major ICC tournament back in 2013 – the ICC Champions Trophy. In 2023, Rohit and his men reached the final of ICC Cricket World Cup at home.

They reached the finals of the 2019-21 and 2021-23 ICC World Test Championship, but have failed to win any of these tournaments.

They also lost the 2017 Champions Trophy final to Pakistan.

Vegetarian’s night out turns sour: Hanamkonda diner served chicken soup in a shocking mix-up

Hanamkonda: A night out with friends turned into a distressing experience for M Santhosh, a resident of Srinagar Colony, at a bar and restaurant in Naimnagar on Thursday. Expecting a vegetarian hot and sour soup, Santhosh was shocked when he received a bowl of chicken hot and sour soup instead.

The confusion arose when Santhosh, a pure vegetarian, questioned the stewards about the soup’s content. Initially, they claimed the pieces were soya, but a direct inquiry with the chef revealed the truth—a mix-up had occurred, and Santhosh had been served a non-vegetarian dish instead.

Expressing deep disappointment, Santhosh lamented the lackadaisical attitude of the restaurant’s management towards this grave error. “For a pure vegetarian person like me, it was very shocking for such bad treatment,” he shared, highlighting the distress caused by the incident.

Adding to his dismay, Santhosh discovered that many restaurants cook both vegetarian and non-vegetarian items in the same pans, raising concerns about cross-contamination for those with dietary restrictions.

Urging authorities to step in, Santhosh called for stringent action against such practices to safeguard the sentiments of vegetarians.

Santhosh took to social media to draw attention from the District Collector Sikta Patnaik to this issue, hoping to spark awareness and initiate changes in how restaurants handle vegetarian and non-vegetarian preparations. He said that he had lodged a complaint with the officials concerned on Friday.
